Category A and E - By attending the Pesticide Recertification workshop at the Northern Green Expo on Friday, January 16, you are completing the recertification requirements in Categories A - Core and E - Turf and Ornamentals. This workshop has been approved by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). Licensed applicators with Categories A and E who last attended a recertification workshop in 2013, and newlicensed pesticide applicators in 2014, must attend an MDA-approved workshop by 12/31/2015. By attending the Pesticide Recertification track and completing the on-site attendance documentation, applicators will obtain recertification credit. The morning and afternoon start with general sessions that are required for all recertifying applicators. There are also breakout sessions where participants can choose sessions of interest. Applicators must attend the entire Pesticide Recertification track (4 general sessions plus 2 break-out sessions) to obtain MDA recertification credit. Attendance will be monitored. The MDA reserves the right to deny recertification credit to participants who arrive late or who are absent during substantial portions of the program. Workshop participants should bring license and photo identification cards to the workshop. Category F (Aquatics) - The Northern Green Expo is again offering a Category F session at the 2015 Northern Green Expo on Thursday, January 15 from 2:00pm – 3:50pm. In order for licensed applicators to get credit for Category F - Aquatics, they must attend both Thursday afternoon Aquatics Pesticide Recertification and the Friday Pesticide Recertification. ATTENTION: Everyone seeking Pesticide Recertification must report to the MDA General Session by 7:30 a.m. All sessions are also open to attendees who are not seeking Pesticide Recertification, as space allows.

Bring your own job posting (no larger than a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper) to place on the boards any time after 7 am on Wednesday, January 14th. • Please list only one job description per posting to ensure that your posting can be put under the correct category heading. • Expo staff will place empty acrylic holders on the boards along with category headings at the beginning of the show. Feel free to bring several copies of the posting which will allow potential employees to take a copy of your posting with them for response after the Expo. Acrylic holders will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once they are full, a single posting can be tacked up to the board, but multiple copies cannot be left. • It is your responsibility to keep tabs on the job posting. Plant hobbyists and professionals have been breeding and selecting for improved traits of ornamental plants for hundreds of years. Many of these new plant selections are not only more attractive, but many also host increased hardiness and better resistance to pests and diseases. Managing turf for lawns, parks, sod production, golf, and sports involves using measured amounts of resource inputs (e.g, water, fertilizer nutrients, plant protectants). Inputs are applied according to turf need and within industry standard agronomic rates to measured turfgrass areas with minimum risk for negative environmental impact. If calculations, calibration, and application are correct the turf responds to our management. With errors in calculation, calibration, and technique, applications may be ineffective, wasteful or potentially harmful. Since its humble beginnings, the nursery and landscape industry has benefited from research efforts designed to increase our basic understanding of plant science and how the application of that knowledge can be used to enhance the success and profitability of the green industry. Clearly green industry professionals have a vested interest in nursery and landscape research and continue to benefit from such efforts. With this relationship in mind, the MNLA Foundation included a focus on research in its new, strategic work plan adopted in 2011 and has been sharing nursery and landscape research activities and findings since January of 2012 under the heading "Research for the Real World." This session will highlight some of these reports and outline the current trends in green industry research. It will also provide an opportunity for MNLA members to comment and provide input related to this MNLA Foundation initiative.

New Elms for American Cities Kris Bachtell

Once a major landscape tree, the American elm (Ulmus americana) was the dominant tree in most street tree and park plantings in northern regions of the United States. Due to its broad range of environmental tolerances, classic cathedral-like form, and other attributes, it was viewed as the “perfect” tree. Unfortunately, it was extremely vulnerable to Dutch Elm Disease (DED), and millions of mature specimens were lost in the 1930s. Today, as a result of a number of selecting and breeding programs, a completely new generation of elms is becoming available to beautify and green American cities.

With today’s changing life styles and life cycles, both urban and suburban outdoor spaces are trending toward downsizing. Often, the smaller the site, the more complex the design solutions. The winter of 2013/2014 broke records for cold temperatures and snowfall at numerous locations throughout the upper midwest. Golf courses in the Chicago to Detroit corridor that possess playing surfaces dominated by Poa annua experienced severe winterkill to greens and fairways. A number of courses decided to rebuild or regrass greens to creeping bentgrass in response to the extensive turf injury and slow recovery of turf during an unseasonably cool spring. Golf course maintenance and the rules of golf should work hand-in-hand with each other. However, they can be at odds with each other if not handled properly. Can Pesticides and Pollinators Co-Exist? Marla Spivak

Every load of pollen a honey bee collects has an average of six detectable pesticide residues. Are all of these harmful? How do multiple pesticides affect bee health? Ways to protect bees from acute pesticide poisonings will be outlined, including preventing drift of insecticides onto flowering plants. Effects of chronic, sublethal doses of systemic insecticides will be illustrated. Pesticides and pollinators can co-exist, but will require thinking twice about the importance of crop protection and the importance of protecting the insect pollinators responsible for onethird of our nation's food supply.

Honey bees and our native bees, such as bumble bees, pollinate 30% of the plants that produce the vegetables, fruits, and nuts that we consume. Bees pollinate native plants that require seed to sustain future populations. These seeds and fruits from native plants are fed on by many animals, from birds to bears. Both native bees and managed honey bees are in decline.
