3. DESIGNING PLANT COMMUNITIES WORKSHOP with Claudia West

3

Our planet is rapidly losing the ecosystems and plants that sustain us and life on earth. Creating more ecological and functional landscapes in our cities and suburbs is urgently needed. However, many plantings that focus on ecological benefits suffer for aesthetic and functional challenges and fail to inspire the public. Great design that follows successful planting strategies is an essential part of the solution. Join us as we dig deep into inspiring design principles derived from wild plant communities and learn to create successful planting systems that provide essential ecosystem functions and contribute to our quality of life. Known for her passionate advocacy of plant-driven design, Claudia West is a leading voice in the emerging field of ecological planting design. She will introduce you to an innovative form of planting design that works with natural principles and marries horticulture with ecology. Moderate to advanced planting design and plant management skills are required for this workshop.

4. A PLANT OUT OF PLACE with Gary Johnson, Dave Hanson, Sam Bauer, & Mary Meyer If you are working in the green industry you have likely heard the term “a plant out of place” or in layman’s terms, a weed. This can mean many things to many people, but for plants, it can just be wrong place, wrong setting, wrong choice. Are you using the best plant for the situation? This interesting and educational workshop will take a look at the landscapes that green industry professionals encounter, including true weeds, and also the plants you may be using correctly or incorrectly. We will discuss the many different versions of the term “plant out of place,” from trees, to herbaceous plants, to turfgrass, to an invasive buckthorn mass. Learn from the following green industry experts and educators:

The only predictable thing about the future is change. All of us have a fear of the unknown. But to be successful, every individual and company will need to embrace change. Experts estimate half of all current jobs may be disrupted by an inevitable tsunami of change: automation, outsourcing, robotics and artificial intelligence. We’re just now witnessing the tip of the iceberg of what promises to be a fundamental restructuring of the U.S. economy – and all of us need to pay attention. Today’s graduate may have to navigate as many as four different careers and S KEYNOTE two dozen jobs. Like it or not, we are all members of the “Gig Economy.” WITH ALL This calls for a mindset of lifelong PASSES learning and retraining; to be ready (in some cases) for jobs that don’t even exist today. We are all entrepreneurs now, but tools are becoming available to ease this rocky transition into the near future. A willingness to fail, iterate and reinvent is no longer optional. How do we get to a place of embracing change and building flexibility into our career plans as well as business plans? One thing seems certain: what worked in 1995 probably won’t work in 2025. Paul explores the challenges and potential solutions as America charges headlong into a new Information Economy.

Works in Stone: Building with Integrity and Mindful of Our Cultural Legacy

Daniel Arabella, Arabella Stone Co. Stonework has become the pinnacle of the greatest landscape work, but that is a misleading stereotype. It is what is on the inside that counts. How are your techniques in building helping

create a cultural legacy that we can look back on? No matter what material you choose to use in your construction techniques, there needs to be a greater emphasis on the depth of character the design or installation has, keeping in mind things like longevity, culture, effects of the labor, and even how it can create pride in your local area. 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM | Aud 2

Bulbs as Companion Plants

Brent Heath, Brent & Becky’s Bulbs Whether you are planning to plant bulbs in a fresh, newly prepared empty garden, or whether you are adding them to an already existing one, this seminar will have the answers for you! With exquisite slides illustrating the seminar, you will be introduced to the best of the best... the right bulbs for the right spots. You’ll learn how to combine bulbs, perennials, annuals, ground covers and flowering shrubs that will create just the feeling you want to generate for four seasons in the garden. You’ll leave with information and inspiration to produce a garden that your customers will enjoy all year. 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM | Aud 1

the choices? Some people live with a patchwork of colors in the landscape for years knowing that it doesn’t feel cohesive, while others “play it safe” with neutral everything (and wonder why their garden lacks personality). How do we address this in a retail setting when we’re supposed to not only be making sales but also be giving design advice in a fast-paced environment with little to no accurate information from customers? Learn how to take cues from your customers and turn them into sales by understanding how color effects people and their unconscious choices to use this information quickly and efficiently. 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM | 101 CDE

Monitoring and Managing Organic Matter in Putting Greens

Douglas Linde, Delaware Valley University Despite significant changes in sand topdressing and injection practices over the past 10 years, putting greens are still vulnerable to excessive levels of organic matter which can lead to catastrophic turf loss. Less extreme consequences of excessive organic matter include poor playability and undesired water retention that leads to higher disease potential. Attendees will learn what enhances organic matter accumulation, how to monitor and manage it, and the results of a recent 4-year study. The presentation should give attendees more confidence in maintaining their putting greens. 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM | 102 ABC

Research for the Real World – The Year in Review

Jim Calkins, Sustainable Horticultural Solutions Since its beginnings, the nursery and landscape industry has benefited from research designed to increase our understanding of plant science and how the application of that knowledge can be used to enhance the success and profitability of the industry. Research on more effective propagation techniques, more efficient container fertility management, consumer preferences and associated marketing strategies,

and new plant selections resulting from plant breeding and selection programs are all examples of how our industry has benefitted. With this in mind, the MNLA Foundation supports the sharing of this research-based information with its “Research for the Real World” initiative. This Northern Green campfire session highlights the current trends in green industry research, and some of the findings reported during the past year. It will also provide an opportunity for MNLA members to comment on industry research needs, and to provide input on this initiative. 10:40 AM - 11:10 AM | Lakeshore Campfire

WEDNESDAY SESSIONS (continued) 11:20 AM - 11:50 AM | Theater

100 Years of Daffodils and More!

Brent Heath, Brent & Becky’s Bulbs Back around 1900, Brent’s grandfather, Charles Heath, ate a cantaloupe that caused him to discover daffodils in tidewater Virginia. Heath, a Yankee, was soon accepted by the local, southern farmers for his instrumental development of a daffodil flower industry, that would later help with cash flow during the depression. Brent’s father and mother, ‘Pappy George’ and Katie Heath, developed a mail order business that once catalogued over 1500 cultivars of daffodils. Brent, who grew up in the business, fell in love with the flower and bought the business from his mother in 1972. He married Becky in 1979 and the rest is history… hold on to your seats while this slide seminar tells the story! 11:20 AM - 11:50 AM | Backyard Campfire

Mycorrhizae: Why Four Species Are Better Than One

Michael Hull, Mycorrhizal Applications Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic relationship with plants, aiding them in their times of stress and need. This relationship is controlled by the plant and can be turned off and on depending what factors are affecting the plant. The plants can make a connection with multiple species of mycorrhizae at the same time, each with their own benefits. This talk is geared towards what these different benefits are and how giving the plant multiple species of mycorrhizae to choose from ultimately helps the grower.

Invasive Species/Noxious Weed Status Update

Jim Calkins, Sustainable Horticultural Solutions The continuing spread of Oriental bittersweet and Japanese hops in southeastern Minnesota, the ongoing damage caused by garlic mustard and common and glossy buckthorn as these species continue to spread within the state, the recent finds of Palmer amaranth in west-central and southern Minnesota, the widespread outbreaks of wild parsnips over the past few years, the potential impacts of the brown marmorated stink bug and other damaging insects that have not yet found their way to Minnesota, and growing concerns about Asian earthworms and the impact they may have on native ecosystems and green industry commerce are just a few examples of the growing threat of invasive species in Minnesota. Take a few minutes to learn how plants, including a number of important landscape species, and other organisms are assessed for possible inclusion on the Minnesota Noxious Weed List or otherwise regulated in Minnesota, gain a better understanding of how invasive species are regulated in the state, and learn how noxious weeds are managed in Minnesota including information about the development of a statewide, speciesspecific weed management plan for Minnesota. This is also an opportunity for green industry professionals to learn which landscape species are currently under review as potential noxious weeds in the state and the species that have been identified for future review and potential listing and regulation as invasive species (non-native species that harm native ecosystems, agricultural systems, or human health) in Minnesota. For example, winged euonymus (Euonymus alatus) is a popular landscape species that may soon become regulated as a noxious weed in Minnesota. Obviously, such listings and regulatory activities have important implications for the environment and for

the nursery and landscape industry so be engaged and stop by to participate in this campfire session to get the latest information about invasive species management in Minnesota and share your thoughts on this important topic. 12:15 PM - 12:45 PM | Lakeshore Campfire

Climate Change and Hardiness Zones Lee Frelich, University of Minnesota A warming climate means that hardiness zones are shifting northwards. However, warmer mean temperatures during winter are also associated with increasing variability. Also, Minnesota will still have shorter winter daylengths and lower sun angle than areas further south, so that extreme winter minimum temperatures will not warm up as fast mean winter temperatures. Caution is needed in decisions regarding planting of new long-lived woody species that originate from areas south of Minnesota. We will review potential neonative trees species that are likely to be successful in Minnesota with a warmer climate. 1:00 PM - 1:30 PM | Lakeshore Campfire

Exploiting Turf Physiological Strategies to Enhance Summer Stress Tolerance

Michelle DaCosta, University of Massachusetts Summer stress is a major problem in the management of cool-season turfgrasses, particularly for species such as annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass. Summer stress can result in significant weakening of turf, while enhancing susceptibility to additional stresses such as traffic, disease, insect, and/or weed infestation. Utilizing appropriate management practices as an integral part of an IPM program prior to and during summer stress periods can promote the health and persistence of turfgrasses, and thus reduce reliance on pesticides. The effects of various agronomic practices on basic turfgrass physiology and stress preconditioning will be discussed. 8:00 AM - 8:50 AM | 102 DEF

Measuring Retail Financial Success: Do You Have What It Takes?

Steve Bailey, Steve Bailey Consulting, Inc. All businesses want to achieve financial success, but standing in their way is having the ability to measure success. First, you need to know that success begins far before the bottom line. It is measured in how profitable your garden center is in buying and selling a product. Your center’s ability to measure those ratios lies in the degree of accountability you have in your POS and accounting system. Your ability to measure those ratios is based on not burying yourself in numbers, but rather the ability to measure the numbers you actually need. Together we can devise a plan to get your garden center to that point. 8:00 AM - 8:50 AM | 101 CDE

Physiology and Management for Minimizing Winter Injury of Turf

How Safe Is Glyphosate?

Hannah Mathers, Mathers Environmental Science Services, LLC Today, one big question is on everyone’s mind - How safe is glyphosate? To be discussed are the different kinds of glyphosate products, ex. terrestrial and aquatic. What is different about these two in terms of carcinogenetic potential? What different kind of cancers are potentially related to glyphosate? Is personal health the only worry? What is “fake news,” and what is “real science with real studies?” 9:05 AM - 10:05 AM | 101 CDE

Collaborative Work and Tools to Reduce Woody Invasive Plant Impacts in the Great Lakes Basin

Clair Ryan, Midwest Invasive Plant Network Come learn about the new Woody Invasives of the Great Lakes (WIGL) Collaborative, funded through the federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative! The project focuses on 28 species of trees, shrubs and woody vines that are showing invasive behavior in all or part of the Great Lakes Basin. Some of these species, like Oriental bittersweet, the Asian bush honeysuckles, tree-of-heaven, and porcelain berry are “known enemies” in Minnesota and are regulated as noxious weeds, while others are not. We’ll focus on green industry contributions to the collaborative project and resulting information and tools that can help green industry professionals

navigate invasive plant issues with clients and highlight the qualities on noninvasive alternatives. Attendees will: • Learn how to access online visualization tools showing where woody species of concern are distributed outside of cultivation how they regulated by Great Lakes States. • Learn about updates and improvements to the Midwest Invasive Plant Networks Landscape Alternatives – a mobile device app and print brochure that help a lay audience understand the problems surrounding invasive plants and identify attractive and functional non-invasive alternatives. • Discuss opportunities for future cooperative work to keep our green landscapes and natural environment healthy and thriving. 9:10 AM - 9:40 AM | Backyard Campfire

Reducing Wear and Soil Compaction on Athletic Fields

Kristina Walker, University of Minnesota - Crookston Athletic fields play an important role in recreational and competitive outdoor sports therefore a quality playing surface is expected. The intensity of use leads to the thinning of the turf canopy and increased soil compaction, which must be properly managed to maintain sustained use of the field. This campfire session will introduce various management strategies to reduce overall turfgrass wear and soil compaction caused by player traffic while improving overall turfgrass density, uniformity, color, quality, and the general aesthetics of athletic fields. 9:10 AM - 9:40 AM | Theater

Let’s Drift Apart: The Issues of Herbicide Drift and Prevention

Hannah Mathers, Mathers Environmental Science Services, LLC Herbicide drift has become big news in recent years due to Roundup® and dicamba-ready crops. However, drift in landscapes and nurseries is nothing new. Applications occurring during wind speeds higher than labelled, wind blowing towards the non-target crop, operating at boom or nozzle heights that will increase drift, and the high sensitivity of trees to herbicides are four common mistakes. Come and hear about ways to prevent drift and the conditions, methods, and products that help your neighbor and you to “drift apart.”

THURSDAY SESSIONS (continued) physiological and developmental aspects of aging in trees and the practical implications in terms of forestry, arboriculture and conservation. In particular, the lecture will address the topic of sprouting in trees which results in the production of secondary trunks following some form of traumatic injury. Sprouting is a universal attribute of temperate angiosperm trees through the sapling stage of development, but is much less common among gymnosperms. Four basic types of sprout morphologies are described: collar sprouts from the base of the trunk, sprouts from specialized underground stems, sprouts from roots, and opportunistic sprouts from layered branches. All these modes of vegetative rejuvenation not only extend the life spans of trees but also allow them to circumvent the ravages of catastrophic disturbance.

Biodiversity of the Minnesota Big Woods and How Native Plants Might be Incorporated into Golf Courses

Lee Frelich, University of Minnesota Minnesota’s Big Woods are temperate deciduous forests dominated by oaks, maples and basswood. These forests contain hundreds of native plant species, many of which are in danger of extinction because of the tiny area of Big Woods forest that remains. One conservation strategy is to restore native plants in as many areas as possible, and areas between golf course fairways can be suitable locations for native plant restorations. Such restorations can contribute to the regional plant-pollinator network, since many of our native pollinators are forest dwelling species. We will discuss advantages and problems associated with restoring native plants on golf courses. 2:30 PM - 3:20 PM | Aud 3

Tongva Park in Santa Monica, and other prominent examples of this trend. Meadows are an important emerging trend, but complicated to design, install and manage, and will be explained as a designed element in the rural, suburban and urban landscape. The dynamic block-plant styles pioneered by Roberto Burle Marx, Thomas Church and Garret Eckbo will also be discussed, along with sustainable matrixes of naturalistic and non-native plants. Planting design is again being embraced by distinguished practitioners as an integral part of any successful garden or landscape architecture project. The presentation will promote and celebrate the talents of many notable people and firms in the United States. This lecture will be beautifully presented with stunning images, will be inspirational, and include practical information for the professional. A wide geographic range of projects will make the lecture appealing to everyone. 2:30 PM - 3:20 PM | 102 ABC

Pre-Game Agronomic Field Safety Assessment for Football and Soccer Fields to Reduce Player Injury Kristina Walker, University of Minnesota - Crookston One of the most difficult turfgrass areas to manage is sports fields due to the intense traffic they receive by players on a regular basis. Sports played on turfgrass athletic fields can easily result in injury to players, and there have been many cases where these injuries could be blamed on turf field conditions. In this seminar, we will explore the agronomic properties that should be included in pre-game field safety and maintenance checklists to assess turf field conditions to reduce the risk of player injuries. 3:20 PM - 4:00 PM | Theater
