Keynote: Delivering WorldClass Customer Service – Lessons from the Mouse
Snow began his Disney career in 1979 as a front-line attractions operator. As he advanced through the company, Dennis managed various operating areas throughout the park, learning and applying the skills it takes to run a world-class, service-driven organization.
Dennis Snow, Snow & Associates, Inc. Customers have more choices than ever, and the result is that most products and services are increasingly seen as commodities. So, in today’s market, what can an organization do to stand out from the crowd? Differentiating your service is the key to attracting and retaining customers – while driving bottom line results. More than ever, customers are focused on value - what you can do that other organizations cannot or will not do. Customers want to know that you are focused on earning their ongoing loyalty. Based on his 20 years with the Walt Disney KEYNOTE World Company, along with many years of consulting with organizations around the WITH ANY ION REGISTRAT world, Dennis Snow will provide a “how-to” program for delivering world-class customer service. This program will provide you with strategic tools that can be used to raise the bar of service throughout your organization, resulting in “walk-through-fire” customer loyalty.

Participants will learn:
• Approaches for ensuring that service is delivered with an experience mindset instead of a task mindset.
• A process for ensuring that your organization’s “backstage”
environment never impacts the “onstage” customer experience.
• Four specific strategies for wowing customers every time. • A mechanism for ensuring that your organization’s processes
Snow launched a division of the Disney Institute responsible for consulting with some of the world’s largest companies including ExxonMobil, AT&T, General Motors and Coca-Cola. During this time, he presented to audiences in diverse locations around the world, such as South Africa, Australia, Mexico, England and Argentina. This division quickly became the fastest-growing venture of the Disney Institute and experienced repeat business of nearly 100%. He also spent several years with the Disney University, teaching corporate philosophy and business practices to cast members and the leadership team. While there, he coordinated the Disney Traditions program, which is universally recognized as a benchmark in corporate training. In his last year with Walt Disney World, Dennis’ leadership performance was ranked in the top 3% of the company’s leadership team. Today, Snow is a full-time speaker, trainer and consultant who helps organizations achieve goals related to customer service, employee development and leadership. Some of his clients include American Express, Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Nationwide Insurance. His articles appear in a number of industry publications, and he is a featured guest “expert” of customer service on several business news-talk radio shows. He is the author of the book, “Unleashing Excellence: The Complete Guide to Ultimate Customer Service,” which has been used in organizations around the world as a blueprint for organizational excellence. His newest book has just been released, titled, “Lessons From the Mouse: A Guide for Applying Disney World’s Secrets of Success to Your Organization, Your Career, and Your Life.”
are designed through the “lens of the customer.”
Dennis Snow’s customer service abilities were honed over 20 years with the Walt Disney World Company. While there, he developed his passion for service excellence and the experience he brings to the worldwide speaking and consulting he does today.
Keynote Presentation Supported by:
7:30 A.M. - 8:20 A.M. | 101 CDE The (New) Fundamentals of Turfgrass Nutrition Micah Woods, Asian Turfgrass Center
8:20 A.M. - 9:20 A.M. | 101 ABIJ Benchmarking and Profit Management: Reach Your True Potential
Most seminars, presentations, articles, and even semesterlong courses about turfgrass nutrition discuss the functions of different elements. Potassium is involved in stomatal regulation, phosphorus is essential for root development, calcium for cell wall strength, and so on. All true, but largely irrelevant for the turfgrass manager. What the turfgrass manager must know is not the function of each element, but the quantities – is enough of this element present to meet the grass requirements, or is it not? If it isn't present in adequate quantities, how much must be added to ensure the grass has enough? In this seminar, the fundamentals of turfgrass nutrition will be explained, with a focus on an understanding of the amount of each nutrient that is required.
Are you reaching your true potential? Most contractors think they are doing well (or bad) but don’t know for sure. It’s just a guess – and it gets them in trouble and keeps them stuck by not understanding the true potential of their business. Jeffrey Scott will share with you industry benchmarks he has accumulated on pricing, mark ups, gross profit, net to owner, pay, and many other areas of your business. You will be able to use his insights to strengthen and grow your business and maximize your profit potential. You will achieve your true profit potential by learning how to: make decisions with more confidence, scale your business more profitably, and optimize your business model.

WEDNESDAY (continued) 8:20 A.M. - 9:20 A.M. | 211 ABCD Conifer Diagnostics: Insect and Mite Conditions Kent Honl, Rainbow Treecare
The list of conifer pests seems to be increasing with each season. This session will discuss a systematic approach to diagnosing, understanding and treating the main insect and mite-related conditions in conifers in the Twin Cities area.
8:20 A.M. - 9:20 A.M. | 102 ABC Controlling Ticks on the Landscape Patrick Parker, SavATree
This presentation will examine the life cycle of the blacklegged tick (deer tick) which is the primary vector for Lyme disease in the United States. Control measures will be explored, including optimal stages of the tick life cycle in which to achieve control to prevent transmission of Lyme disease. Cultural practices as well as organic and traditional products available for tick control will be discussed, along with the best application methods and proper expectations for control.
8:20 A.M. - 9:20 A.M. | 102 DEF Cultural Practices and Guides for Low Budget Athletic Fields Brad Jakubowski, Doane College
This session is intended to identify cultural practices (aerating, overseeding, topdressing, composting, etc.) that will reduce the need for inputs (fertilizer, pesticides, water, etc.). Most sports turf managers, whether they work for a city, county, K12 school system, college/university, are continually asked to do more with less. Their budget restraints get tighter and they seem to fight harder every year for the resources ($) that they need to deliver a premium playing surface. Many turf managers don’t have a lot of money to follow the conventional turf maintenance path of using fertilizer and pesticides to maintain safe, healthy, high-performing turf. Creating the optimum growing conditions via cultural practices can potentially minimize the dependence on these inputs.

8:20 A.M. - 9:20 A.M. | 101 FGH Growing, Marketing, and Selecting Great Vegetable Varieties
Josh Kirschenbaum, Panamerican Seed Company/Ball Horticultural As vegetable gardening continues to rise in popularity, there are plenty of opportunities to profit from it. In this discussion, we will examine different ways to incorporate vegetables into your business plan. Specific topics will include: choosing the right varieties, innovative ways to market edibles, and enticing new gardeners to “grow their own.”
8:20 A.M. - 9:20 A.M. | 208 ABCD Hiring and Firing: What You Need To Know from a Legal Perspective
Patrick McGuiness, Zlimen & McGuiness PLLC In this amusing session, join attorney Patrick McGuiness to discover the important legal aspects of hiring new employees, and how to terminate an employee if things don't work out. The session will cover job postings, applications, interviews, employee counseling, discipline and termination rights.
8:20 A.M. - 9:20 A.M. | 101 CDE Nutrient Use by the Grass and Nutrient Supply by the Soil Micah Woods, Asian Turfgrass Center
Grass grows in soil, and nutrients used by the grass come either from the soil or from fertilizer. When the soil contains enough of an element to meet all of the grass requirements, none of that element is required as fertilizer. When the grass can use more of an element than can be supplied by the soil, that element must be applied as fertilizer. This seminar will explain how to estimate the maximum amount of an element the grass can use, how to identify the quantity that can be supplied by the soil, and how to use those two amounts to get an estimate of the amount that may be required as fertilizer.

8:20 A.M. - 9:20 A.M. | 103 BC Stormwater Abstraction: Harvest & Reuse and Other Stormwater BMPs from a WMO and Nursery & Landscape Point of View Jim Calkins, Sustainable Horticultural Solutions
It is well known that the natural environment has been significantly impacted by the activities of human beings. Water is one of the many resources that have been negatively impacted by people and society appears to be increasingly interested in mitigating these impacts. Not surprisingly, government, at all levels, is involved in these efforts. In Minnesota, water management organizations (WMOs) are ultimately the local government entities charged with protecting water resources. To achieve their water management goals, promoting stormwater best management practices (SWBMPs) that focus on managing stormwater runoff and reducing its effects on flooding and water quality is typically a high priority for WMOs, and abstraction (retaining stormwater on site through infiltration, evapotranspiration, or capture and reuse) is generally considered the most efficient and cost-effective method of managing stormwater runoff. It is also increasingly recognized that the nursery and landscape industry, alone and in partnership with WMOs, can play a leadership role in protecting the earth’s water resources by endorsing and embracing improved production practices and landscape design, implementation, and management strategies that are focused on minimizing water use and managing stormwater runoff. This session will explore these issues from a WMO and nursery and landscape perspective.

2:40 P.M. - 3:30 P.M. | 101 FGH New Plant Forum, Part I
State legislation banning the use of turf pesticides was first adopted by New York and Connecticut in the spring of 2011. Other states with laws pending have followed suit while others are just beginning to talk about it. Cosmetic use of turf pesticides have already been banned in Canada. This presentation will focus on turf management practices that can be applied to ball fields and school grounds to minimize or even eliminate the use of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. First and foremost, a shift in mindset must take place followed by close communication among managers, coaches, participants and parents during the process. After that, it’s just fundamental turf management incorporating “cause and effect” principles and a lot of common sense! The day is coming when these decisions will be made for you. Why not address them now and stay ahead of the curve?!
This exciting session has returned to the 2016 Northern Green Expo and is for those of you who are all about the plants! The New Plant Forum is a 2-hour, information packed session highlighting new plants for our industry – including herbaceous perennials and annuals, as well as trees, shrubs and evergreens. The best of the newest will be presented by MNLA members and affiliated education institution breeders who are on top of the newest plants on the market! Come prepared to hear all about cutting edge new plants that you can use in your business.

2:40 P.M. - 3:30 P.M. | 102 ABC Small Engine Maintenance Steve Hagen, Midwest Stihl Inc.
Small gas engine maintenance is a very important process needed to keep your equipment running and to get the anticipated life out of the equipment. Also, when equipment is maintained properly, it can keep your crews working and you have less down time. Some small gas equipment, especially hand-held equipment, is often neglected because it is not used every day and sometimes may be used only once or twice a year. We will go over the general maintenance of small gas powered equipment and discuss why we need to select the proper fuels and storage of your equipment. We will allow enough time to answer questions during this session.
2:40 P.M. - 3:30 P.M. | 103 BC The New MN Plumbing Code and the Future of Landscaping in Minnesota
Richard Hauffe, International Code Council; Tim Malooly, Water in Motion; Tim Power, Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association The Minnesota legislature created an authoritative Minnesota State Plumbing Board (MSPB) in 2007, dominated by members of the plumbing industry. In 2015, the MSPB adopted a national model plumbing code with Minnesota amendments, choosing the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) as their base document, without giving serious consideration to a competing code (IPC) that is preferred by building officials, cities and many other organizations including MNLA. An appeal to this decision is ongoing. This session will explore the history of this issue and the impacts that will be felt by landscape and landscape irrigation contractors if/when the UPC goes into effect in Minnesota. 10 | 2016 Northern Green Expo Advance Program

2:40 P.M. - 3:30 P.M. | 211 ABCD Winners and Losers: Trees for a Changing Climate Dave Hanson, Minnesota Department of Transportation
Change is inevitable, change can have positive and negative consequences. Evidence suggests Minnesota's climate is changing and will continue to change. This presents difficulties for Minnesota's trees, but it may also present opportunities to utilize different species. We will look at the effects on trees, a need to proceed with caution and species - future winners and losers.
3:40 P.M. - 4:40 P.M. | 101 CDE Calculating the Fertilizer Requirement for Any Turfgrass, Anywhere Micah Woods, Asian Turfgrass Center
This presentation builds on the fundamentals of the turfgrass nutrition talk, and the nutrient use and nutrient supply talk, by explaining a system by which a turfgrass manager can calculate the amount of any element required by any turfgrass, under any growing condition, anywhere in the world. Some common misapprehensions about turfgrass nutrition and soil testing will also be discussed. The minimum levels for sustainable nutrition (MLSN) guidelines for interpreting soil test results, and the temperature-based turfgrass growth potential (GP), which were introduced in the two previous seminars, will be discussed in even more detail.

3:40 P.M. - 4:40 P.M. | 208 ABCD How Much Water Can the Soil Absorb? Fred Rozumalski, Barr Engineering
Green space is considered to be a sponge absorbing precipitation. But in urban areas where construction has occurred, our green spaces often contain compacted soils that support turf only with supplemental water and fertilizer. This session discusses the natural capacity of different soil types to accept and hold stormwater. It also discusses methods for restoring compacted and depleted soils to function hydrologically as best they can.
3:40 P.M. - 4:40 P.M. | 101 ABIJ Incorporating Design Technology for Efficient and Accurate Landscape Design/Build Workflows
Eric Gilbey, Vectorworks, Inc.; Bryan Goff, Grey Leaf Design, Inc. Many companies struggle adopting design technology, fearing the transition would be more costly then beneficial. However, design/ build professionals are finding advantages when integrating innovative technology, be it digital site survey equipment, design software, or online resources that aid in client satisfaction, material selection, and successful installations. This session will show how design/build professionals have sped up their processes by integrating technology from site inventories, selling projects, and planning for installs, all while improving productivity and accuracy.
3:40 P.M. - 4:40 P.M. | 211 ABCD Managing Tree Diseases in a Changing Climate
Michelle Grabowski, University of Minnesota Extension All plant diseases require a susceptible host, a pathogen and the right environmental conditions. As climate change shifts the third side of the plant disease triangle, disease management strategies will need to change as well. Come learn how to adapt existing tree disease management strategies to Minnesota's changing climate, including adjusting timing of pruning and pesticide applications. Learn about stress related tree diseases.

3:40 P.M. - 4:40 P.M. | 103 BC Weather and Climate Trends in Minnesota: Impacts on the Landscape Mark Seeley, University of Minnesota
In recent decades, there has been increasing recognition that the climate is showing several distinct changes in both quantity and character. In our own Great Lakes region there are measurable changes going on. Among these are: (1) warmer temperatures (with seasonal and diurnal disparity); (2) higher frequency of tropicallike dew points, especially in the summer months; (3) and an overall increase in variability of precipitation and other hydrologic features, as well as a change in the character of extremes. These climate trends are clearly linked to visible consequences in the landscape. We are already adapting the management of natural resources (soil, water, and plants) to accommodate our changing climate. Some examples will be discussed.

7:30 A.M. - 8:20 A.M. | 101 CDE Soil Water Management: Timing, Amount and Syringing
8:30 A.M. - 9:30 A.M. | 101 FGH Perennial Plant Communities
Fifteen years ago, it was rare to use a soil moisture meter. Today, it seems that almost every turfgrass manager has some idea of the soil moisture content. In this presentation, Micah Woods will show that daily irrigation can use less water than infrequent irrigation, while maintaining a lower soil moisture content than deep and infrequent irrigation. Woods will explain how soil moisture meters can be used to prove that, how they can be used to measure the real evapotranspiration rate, and why syringing turf for the purpose of cooling the surface is a waste of time, water, and energy.
The discussion will cover many perennial plants that can live well together, not dominating each other or in need of special cultural conditions or treatment. They live well in close knit communities and understand the health and beauty of intimacy. We will consider their youthful nurturing, adult care and overall gardening needs through time.
Micah Woods, Asian Turfgrass Center
8:30 A.M. - 9:30 A.M. | 103 BC How California is Moving to Minnesota Brent Mecham, Irrigation Association
Water budgeting has historically been used as an irrigation management tool, but now water budgeting is used as a design tool that will describe the types of plants and turfgrasses used in the landscape. This session will provide an overview of changes in the California Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance and how that could influence what you do in Minnesota.
8:30 A.M. - 9:30 A.M. | 101 CDE Instead of Shade, Let's Talk About Light Micah Woods, Asian Turfgrass Center
Shade from trees, buildings, clouds or mountains affects a lot of turfgrass areas, and shade can make it impossible to produce the desired turfgrass conditions. Rather than talk about the impossible, in this presentation Woods will talk about light. Specifically, he'll discuss photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), and the daily light integral (DLI). These sound complicated but are quite simple and can be easily measured or estimated. With an understanding and ability to measure and communicate about PAR, PPFD, and DLI, it makes it a lot easier to manage those previously impossible shade problems.

8:30 A.M. - 9:30 A.M. | 211 ABCD Pollinator Update: Where Are We Now? Marla Spivak, University of Minnesota
The plight of bees and other pollinators gained public attention beginning in 2006. Now, 10 years later, we are experiencing nothing short of a cultural revolution in how we landscape our homes, parks, golf courses, roadsides and other green spaces. We want to plant flowers that provide food for bees, monarchs and other beneficial insects. We want more native flowers, less lawn, and a wilder looking aesthetic. We are paying attention to pesticides, and learning that indiscriminate use, and products with long-lasting residues do more harm than good. We are experiencing a new kind of flower-power. Join us.

THURSDAY (continued) 8:30 A.M. - 9:30 A.M. | 102 ABC Retailers—Understanding Labeling Laws Regarding Pollinators and Hardiness
John Daniels, Bachman's Wholesale Nursery and Hardscapes; Geir Friisoe, Minnesota Department of Agriculture; Karen O'Connor, Mother Earth Gardens Moderator: Tim Power, Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association Minnesota’s Nursery Law was changed in 2012 by adding hardiness labeling requirements and again in 2014 by adding pollinator labeling requirements for retail plant tags. Both of these requirements were modified by our legislature in 2015. The change to hardiness labeling is non-controversial and will simplify the process of labeling plants that are non-hardy in a sales location. The pollinator labeling change definitely is controversial, and requires retail plant sellers to make choices on advertising and labeling. This panel will explain current law, these recent changes and two different and legal approaches to working with the pollinator labeling law, one which eliminates all reference to pollinators in advertising and labeling, and another which embraces “beneficial to pollinators” labeling while complying with the law.
8:30 A.M. - 9:30 A.M. | 208 ABCD Succession Ready: Building Your Bench Terri Wilcox, Resultants for Business, Inc.
In today’s business world, the buzz is all about “exit planning,” “succession planning.” and “transition planning.” And you thought all you needed was strategic planning! This presentation will discuss how these terms inter-relate and describe how being succession-ready is an ongoing mindset of continuous improvement. It’s all about bench strength; right people in the right seats. Can this actually be planned? Who leads it? And can we keep it simple? Based on experiences as an owner, as well as a business advisor, the presenter will challenge the audience to think about their own companies in terms of succession readiness.
LEARN HOW POLICY IS AFFECTING LANDSCAPES
8:30 A.M. - 9:30 A.M. | 101 ABIJ The Design of Living Landscapes, Part I: Looking at the Layers Rick Darke, Rick Darke LLC
The richness of life in any landscape is linked to the richness of its layers, and this is true for both people and wildlife. Rick Darke will begin with an illustrated discussion of the living layers in local and regional landscapes, as they occur naturally and as they are modified by human activity. This will provide the basis for understanding the characteristics of healthy layers and why they should be conserved and enhanced in home gardens and shared landscapes. Part II will continue in the same room immediately following this session.
9:40 A.M. - 10:30 A.M. | 103 BC A New Way to Characterize Sprinkler Performance Brent Mecham, Irrigation Association
There are many influences on how well sprinklers apply water to the landscape. Distribution uniformity has been used for many years, but there are other considerations about evaluating where the water is going and how that influences irrigation scheduling.
9:40 A.M. - 10:30 A.M. | 102 ABC Alternatives to Traditional Garden Center Products/Offerings
Karen Bachman Thull, Bachman's Inc.; Lee Nesbitt, Nesbitt's Nursery, Inc.; Jack Pahl, Pahl's Market; Randy Schmitz, Rolling Ridge Wedding & Event Center; Glenn Switzer, Switzer’s Nursery & Landscaping, Inc. This session will cover the following topics related to LED lighting: Items to consider when quoting the lighting job; selling the maintenance contract with the job - not after; what maintenance is there if you’re not changing the lamps?; how and why you should test a transformer for load; and documentation - yes, you have to have it!
One of the most important tools in managing a business is good data. Leadership teams know the importance of good data and the tracking of data on scorecards. These scorecards give our work teams a current pulse on the business, identify issues before they become big problems and help them in predicting future activity. Good data and good scorecards take the subjectivity out of an issue so the team can focus on solving the issue with facts and not be distracted by personalities. Scorecards are not just for leadership teams but are a vital tool for managers and supervisors at all levels of the organization.

Paul Burke, Resultants for Business, Inc.
2:00 P.M. - 2:50 P.M. | 103 BC Aquatics Recertification, Part I
John Barten; James Johnson, Freshwater Scientific Services, LLC Aquatics Recertification, parts I and II, will cover critical components of aquatic pesticide applicator use including the following: plant identification, problem identification, alternatives to pesticides, dose calculations, and nuisance growth factors. Understanding herbicide behavior in lakes will also be covered. Herbicides are tested in controlled lab studies to determine the dose and contact time that will provide the optimal control of target plants. However, when herbicides are added to lakes, it is often much more difficult to control the dose and contact time. This unpredictability can lead to failed treatments or undesirable damage to native plants. Either of these outcomes can be a headache for applicators, but with a solid understanding of herbicide behavior in lakes and careful consideration of treatment site conditions, you can plan treatments that will maximize the chances for success.
Part I begins at 8:30 a.m. in the same room.
Part II will continue in the same room immediately following this session.

Lloyd Traven, Peace Tree Farm
We have 10 seconds to make an impression on the customer when she looks at our stores - and she has plenty of other places to spend her money. Is there a compelling reason your garden center is earning her business? We must wrap our heads around this retail reality - the customer is seeking success, solutions, and emotional satisfaction and functionality. We need to inspire her with ideas, designs and options. She wishes she could do what we do every day with plants and outdoor rooms - leverage that! Traven shows us how to capture the younger generation by engaging with them in the ways they are expecting to be engaged, and become that go-to place you want to be - the one store they have to go to, the “awesome” garden center everyone looks to for the “coolest” shopping experience. The world has changed and it is no longer about pretty flowers!
2:00 P.M. - 2:50 P.M. | 101 CDE Maximizing Microclimate Turf Management, Part I Steve Keeley, Kansas State University
Microclimates across your golf course alter the turf environment and affect turfgrass performance. In part 1, microclimatic factors affecting plant health will be examined, and simple, relatively inexpensive tools to measure these factors will be discussed. Part II will continue in the same room immediately following this session.
2:00 P.M. - 2:50 P.M. | 102 ABC Research for the Real World: The Year in Review Jim Calkins, Sustainable Horticultural Solutions
Since its humble beginnings, the nursery and landscape industry has benefited from research efforts designed to increase our basic understanding of plant science and how the application of that knowledge can be used to enhance the success and profitability of the green industry. Clearly green industry professionals have a vested interest in nursery and landscape research and continue to benefit from such efforts. With this relationship in mind, the MNLA Foundation included a focus on research in its strategic work plan adopted in 2011 and has been sharing nursery and landscape research activities and findings since January of 2012 under the heading "Research for the Real World." This session will highlight some of these reports and outline the current trends in green industry research. It will also provide an opportunity for MNLA members to comment and provide input related to this MNLA Foundation initiative.

2:00 P.M. - 2:50 P.M. | 211 ABCD Structural Pruning Young and Old Trees to Enhance Customer Service Ed Gilman, University of Florida
Pruning can have a dramatic impact on how trees respond to gravity, wind, and ice storms. Combined with practical experience, our data generated from a wind machine producing up to 120 mph winds shows that structural pruning designed to reduce growth rate and weight on codominant limbs is the most effective method of minimizing damage from storms. We will show details on how trees fail and why and how to reduce or prevent it. We will teach you what to look for when evaluating trees for potential failure and how to treat these trees. You will leave with a new understanding of how and why we prune trees, and how to apply it to most real life preservation situations.

THURSDAY (continued) 2:00 P.M. - 2:50 P.M. | 102 DEF Why, What, How! Playground Safety and Maintenance Paul Edwardson, City of Bloomington This session will cover: Why we need to talk about playground safety and maintenance; What it is we need to know about playground safety and maintenance; and How we accomplish our playground-related goals.
3:00 P.M. - 3:50 P.M. | 103 BC Aquatics Recertification, Part II
John Barten; James Johnson, Freshwater Scientific Services, LLC Aquatics Recertification, part I and II will cover critical components of aquatic pesticide applicator use including the following: plant identification, problem identification, alternatives to pesticides, dose calculations, and nuisance growth factors. Part I begins at 2:00 p.m. in the same room.
3:00 P.M. - 3:50 P.M. | 211 ABCD Developing the Highest Quality Trees in a Wholesale Tree Nursery
Ed Gilman, University of Florida See advanced, detailed, modern tree production strategies based on the experience of many growers and research in the last 15 years. Topics include liner and container selection, planting strategies, production pruning protocols, and root pruning and field harvesting. The emphasis on practical, hands-on strategies based on techniques proven to work will allow participants to begin producing quality shade trees tomorrow. Increase your efficiency in producing quality trees and reduce the time required to grow trees. Examples from around North America will be used to show how this can dramatically improve nursery stock quality available for urban planting projects.
3:00 P.M. - 3:50 P.M. | 102 DEF Infield Skin Construction and Topdressings for Baseball and Softball Fields
Larry DiVito, Minnesota Twins Baseball Club This talk will look at ways to build and renovate infield skin areas to enhance drainage and playability. Types of infield dirt material will be discussed. We will also look at various types of topdressings for infield dirt areas, and consider their role in managing a quality infield surface.

As a greater percent of the worldwide population continues to move from rural areas to urban, our responsibilities to the environment are changing. Gain positive insight into the many ecological and sustainable ways we can incorporate green into our urban lifestyles and environments. Learn how to make urban spaces not only green and beautiful, but also livable, and the many benefits to doing so.
3:00 P.M. - 3:50 P.M. | 101 FGH That Plant is Phenomenal! So What? NOW What? Lloyd Traven, Peace Tree Farm
Finding or breeding the next great plant is just a small part of the puzzle, marketing and positioning is AT LEAST as critical! Whatever the latest/greatest is, it still has to be brought to market in a very crowded playing field and stand out from everything else, or it quickly fades into a bad memory. All the effort to convince a consumer to pull out the credit card is wasted, and EVERYONE loses! PROVING the difference through trialing worldwide is a beginning, but there is simply NO EXCUSE for offering an inferior or unproven product. Follow Traven and see how he brought one of the hottest and best plants to market, and had to end up creating his own marketing, develop new avenues, and continue to expand the uses and worldwide sales. Development and ASSURANCE of a secure and efficient supply chain is paramount, because nothing ticks off consumers more than having an awardwinning and heavily promoted plant be unavailable when they swarm into YOUR stores. Retailer awareness and involvement is also crucial---you can’t sell a winner you don’t know exists. When the product TRULY is phenomenal, everyone wins!
3:00 P.M. - 3:50 P.M. | 208 ABCD Customer Experiences: How to Use Social Media to Differentiate Your Business Jeff Korhan, Media First Marketing
Differentiation used to be the result of product or service excellence, but that is now expected. What your media does or does not do throughout the customer experience is the engine that drives success or failure, and that experience today starts online. Learn how to map out the ideal customer experience, and use digital and social media to favorably affect how buyers are thinking, seeing, doing and feeling about your products and services. Learn how to proactively solve problems before, during and after the sale to create memorable customer experiences that get talked about. Finally, learn how to sell more by collaborating with customers to provide solutions that are better then they had imagined possible.

1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M. | 102 DEF Science and Uses of Growth Managers/Regulators Joel Spies, Rainbow Treecare
Growth regulators can be effective tools to help you manage your clients’ trees and shrubs. They slow down the growth of the plant to give your production crews more time between pruning cycles and increase your flexibility in scheduling pruning jobs. Additionally, they reduce overall costs by reducing the labor and biomass disposal costs per site visit. This session will provide an overview of: science and uses of growth regulators; benefits of growth regulators to the plant and to the business; how to apply Cambistat and Trimtect – keys to success; and application timing.
1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M. | 103 BC Managing a Landscape Irrigation Service Business, Part IV John Eggleston, Federal Irrigation Supply

This workshop has been approved by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). Licensed applicators with Categories A and E who last attended a recertification workshop in 2014, and newly-licensed pesticide applicators in 2015, must attend an MDA-approved workshop by 12/31/2016. By attending the Pesticide Recertification track and completing the on-site attendance documentation, applicators will obtain recertification credit. The morning and afternoon start with general sessions that are required for all recertifying applicators. There are also breakout sessions where participants can choose sessions of interest. Applicators must attend the entire Pesticide Recertification track (four general sessions plus two break-out sessions) to obtain MDA recertification credit. Attendance will be monitored. The MDA reserves the right to deny recertification credit to participants who arrive late or who are absent during substantial portions of the program. Workshop participants should bring license and photo identification cards to the workshop. Category F (Aquatics) - The 2016 Northern Green Expo is again offering a Category F session on Thursday, January 14 from 2:00 p.m. – 3:50 p.m. In order for licensed applicators to get credit for Category F - Aquatics, they must attend both Thursday afternoon Aquatics Pesticide Recertification and the Friday Pesticide Recertification. 8:40 A.M. - 9:35 A.M. | 101 ABIJ The Mock Spill Program Fred Whitford, Purdue University
The absolute worst time to "learn" how to deal with a pesticide spill from a truck is at the time of the accident. Equipping your truck to deal with a spill, educating your employees on what steps to take, and knowing who to call in the event of a pesticide spill are essential when trying to reduce the negative impacts associated with these types of accidents. And lastly, when was the last time you asked your insurance agent whether these types of accidents are covered by the policy? Common sense preventative and reactive approaches will be discussed during the program.
10:35 A.M. - 11:30 A.M. | 101 ABIJ Greenhouse: IPM Programs for Greenhouse, Turf and Landscape that Reduce Neonicotinoid Use Vera Krischik, University of Minnesota
IPM uses multiple tactics such as monitoring, scouting, damage thresholds, biocontrol agents, biorational insecticides, and conventional insecticides. We will discuss IPM program for major pests in GH (thrips), turf (Japanese beetle), and landscape (aphids) that will support beneficial insects such as pollinators, butterflies, and lady beetles.

FRIDAY PESTICIDE SESSIONS (continued) or pushed beyond their design specifications, will break down quicker. The trick is to know when a tank needs to be replaced before it ruptures. This program will talk about tank designs, provide management strategies that can extend the tank’s longevity, offer inspection techniques to pinpoint tanks needing replacement, and offer disposal options for unwanted tanks.
2:00 P.M. - 2:30 P.M. | 101 ABIJ Deciphering Pesticide Labels
Dean Herzfeld, University of Minnesota Extension ‘Read and Follow the Pesticide Label – The Label is the Law’ is one of the most often stated phrases heard by anyone using pesticides. But what ARE labels and how should you use them? Labels have become longer and more complex, and sometimes confusing. And they contain a lot of information that are not legal requirements. We will look at what labels are and examine some statements found on labels to help you tell the difference between mandatory statements (legally required to do), advisory statements (optional to do) or factual statements about the pesticide product.
2:35 P.M. - 3:35 P.M. | 101 ABIJ Bee's Role in Pollination and How to Protect Them Gary Reuter, University of Minnesota
This talk will discuss the role of bees and beekeeping in pollinating our food supply. It will also discuss ways to protect the bees while protecting plants with pesticides.
