2 Pesticide Recertification (Categories A,E,F, and P available) This workshop meets MDA’s Commercial Pesticide Applicator requirements for categories A (Core) & E (Turf and Ornamentals). New in 2017! Recertification for optional Categories F (Aquatics) or P (Vertebrate Pest) will also be offered on the same day. These workshops have been approved by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). Licensed applicators with Categories A and E who last attended a recertification workshop in 2015, and new-licensed pesticide applicators in 2016 must attend an MDA-approved workshop by 12/31/2017. By attending the Pesticide Recertification track and completing the on-site attendance documentation, applicators will obtain recertification credit. In order for licensed applicators to receive credit for Category F (Aquatics) or Category P (Vertebrate Pest), they must also attend the Pesticide Recertification track from 10 a.m.– 4 p.m. and complete on-site attendance documentation. 3 NCMA Segmental Retaining Walls Installer Course – Level I/Basic Presented by Dave Klein, Amcon Block and Precast, an NCMA Certified Instructor This one-day Segmental Retaining Wall (SRW) Installer Course teaches installers fundamental SRW installation guidelines, material and system component properties, soils and compaction, the effect of water, and site practices. Those who successfully complete the classroom training and pass a written examination become certified as a Certified SRW Installer (CSRWI). This credential is highly valued by consumers and the program includes a wealth of valuable course information and reference material that attendees take back to work for implementation as money-saving and profit-making ideas. The biophilia hypothesis suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems. We need nature in a deep and fundamental fashion, but we have often designed our cities and suburbs in ways that both degrade the environment and alienate us from nature. Biophilic design is an innovative way of designing the places where we live, work, and learn. In this session, Hall will explore the linkages between the built environment and elements of nature and how this translates to a bolstering of the long-term demand for plants and landscape architectural services. Eric Chester, a trusted source in the global dialogue on employee engagement, workplace culture, and the emerging generation will provide a “can’t miss session.”

This has opened the doors for new applications for drones in the green industry which empower small businesses and operators to have a much greater impact in the landscape. This session will provide an introduction to the legal and technical requirements for successfully operating drones as a commercial entity as well as the emerging applications for mapping, analysis, documentation, and presentation within the landscape industry.

Containers are my go-to solution for tropicals, succulents, veggies, fruits, herbs, annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. In other words, if it has roots, it can grow in a container. I usually come up with some strange combos, but I do learn a lot about what a plant requires. This is one of my favorite ways to work with deep plugs of perennials and small shrubs. Sometimes I take all the leftover plants I am growing and make a container and usually people tell me it's their favorite. Of course, they want to know where I got the idea. I say it came to me in a dream which is a pretty good fib. We will talk about some design principles and then we can break them. When you do containers, your only limit is your imagination!

One of the many challenges of the horticulture industry is the perplexing -- and often paralyzing -- question "What's next?" But that's where we can begin asking "What if?" The SHIFT initiative began with that exact question. "What if we understood tomorrow's consumers?" The effects of urbanization severely impact the quality of our lives and the environment. In a world deprived of wild places, every piece of urban and suburban land becomes an opportunity to bring the beauty and function of what we have lost back into our lives and balance the effects we have on the planet. But just using native plants alone won’t automatically create the thriving landscapes we envision and depend on for our future. Planting that focuses solely on ecology and environmental function often fails to wow the public and simply doesn’t survive in today’s low budget maintenance environment. Solving this challenge requires a new form of planting design and land management that works with natural principles and marries horticulture with ecology. This new theater with a 40-foot wide by 20-foot high screen in the center of the action will host a variety of live events, including the Green Industry Awards Celebration, as well as sessions focusing on photography, the Ryder Cup, presentations from Landscape Award recipients, and a plant fashion show! Plus, featured interviews, video highlights and educational content all tailored specifically for green industry professionals.

Energetic and accessible, acclaimed standup John Heffron shares an array of relatable experiences from childhood through life as a married father. He’s learned a thing or two about relationships with family, friends, and even himself along his journeys, gaining an astute, uniquely honest perspective widely praised among his comedy peers. Audiences of all ages relate to his enthusiastic, hard-won wisdom, recognizing how often the path to maturity is marked by universal triumphs and failures. Rather than mock differences, the Detroit native aims to engage, connect, and enlighten. Long before emerging victorious in the second season of NBC’s hit reality competition Last Comic Standing, Heffron first took the stage at the University of Michigan campus’ Main Street Comedy Showcase. He soon found himself skipping night classes to pursue his passion and branching into FM radio, serving as Danny Bonaduce’s wingman on Detroit’s number one morning show, Danny Bonaduce and the Q Crew. Along with appearances on The Tonight Show, The Late Late Show, HBO, FX, VH1, A&E, and CMT, Heffron remains one of a small handful of veteran performers to tape two separate Comedy Central specials and has an hour special, Middle Class Funny, on Netflix.

John Heffron

In the podcasting realm, Heffron has guested on WTF with Marc Maron, The Joe Rogan Experience, and Ari Shaffir’s Skeptic Tank. He launched his own The State I’m In on the All Things Comedy network in August 2014. Much like his self-effacing live material, Heffron’s podcast invites guests and listeners alike to explore the ever-fluctuating position they find themselves in both physically and mentally. In addition to headlining clubs and appearing at festivals around the world, Heffron remains in high demand as a performer at events for numerous Fortune 50 companies including Mercedes, Frito Lay, Sonic, Johnson & Johnson, Ernst and Young, and the FBI, just to name a few.
