Revolution in Planting Design Presented by Thomas Rainer, Phyto Studio and Larry Weaner, Larry Weaner Landscape Associates Thomas Rainer | The Social Networks of Plants: Creating Designed Plant Communities This groundbreaking talk presents a powerful alternative to traditional horticulture—designed plantings that function like naturally-occurring plant communities. Join Thomas Rainer, a leading voice in ecological landscape design, to learn how plants fit together in nature and how to use this knowledge to create landscapes that are resilient, beautiful, and diverse. As practical as it is inspiring, this talk explores a new synthesis of ecology and horticulture--resulting in an intentionally designed and managed community where population dynamics are encouraged within an aesthetic framework. Larry Weaner | The Liberated Landscape: Integrating Ecological Processes into Landscape Design All too often we treat our gardens and landscapes as static compositions of carefully placed and managed plants. But our approach can be more dynamic—and arguably more rewarding—by working with ecological processes and patterns of change over time. Learn how Larry Weaner combines basic design principles and practical management techniques with an understanding of ecological patterns and processes to create ever-evolving landscapes that bring new meaning to the idea of partnering with nature. Using examples from diverse meadow, shrubland, and woodland projects, Weaner will share how this give-and-take approach can result in low-maintenance, aesthetically compelling landscapes. Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The discussion will include topics of: • Sustainable Turfgrass Systems • Choosing Turfgrasses for Urban Sites • Water Mangement • Urban Turfgrass Nutrition and Fate • 21st Century Mowing • Turfgrass Physiology for the Practitioner • Pesticide Management and Environmental Issues Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Great Game of Business & The Great Game of Landscaping Presented by Dave Scholten, The Great Game of Business; and Jason Rathe, Field Outdoor Spaces The Great Game of Business was developed to help close one of the biggest gaps in business: the gap between managers and employees. What lies at the heart of The Game is a very simple proposition: The best, most efficient, most profitable way to operate a business is to give everybody in the company a voice in saying how the company is run and a stake in the financial outcome, good or bad. Dave Scholten, Great Game of Business (GGOB) coach and practitioner, will spend the morning providing attendees with a basic understanding of the origins of The Game, and application of open-book management. In the afternoon, attendees will get a detailed description of how one company, Field Outdoor Spaces, has implemented the concepts for a 25-employee seasonal landscape design-build company in Minneapolis. Field has been implementing and evolving the concepts of the Great Game of Business for six years. This session is intended to openly share challenges, failures, missteps and ultimate successes in their journey to be a Great Game company. As part of the Q&A session, Field will have employees from multiple levels of the company talk about their experiences with The Game so far. Time: 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Keynote: Emotional Intelligence: Learn How to Interact, Communicate, and Collaborate Successfully with All Types of People Dave Durham, Mindshift Zone There’s a lot of buzz centered around emotional intelligence in the workplace right now, and with good reason. Wicked Worms: New Approaches to Managing Difficult Earthworms Benjamin McGraw, Ph.D, Pennsylvania State University Earthworms have been issues on golf courses across the country for over one hundred years. Despite being beneficial in most cropping systems for their ability to break down organic matter and improve soil aeration and water infiltration, these European invasives create castings on turf sites that dull mower blades, muddy the turf, and cause secondary pest issues (e.g. moles). Several turfgrass insecticides have negative impacts on earthworm populations, though unfortunately these are not legal. Therefore, superintendents either use these products in an off-label manner or must rely on cultural controls (e.g. acidifying fertilizers, sand topdressing, etc.) to reduce populations. In this session, McGraw will present current research at Penn State aimed at reducing earthworm populations through the use of cultural practices (e.g. saponin-based fertilizers). He will also cover the emergence of a new invasive earthworm species from Asia that is appearing in landscapes and forests across the Eastern and Midwestern U.S.

Beekeeping for Golf Courses Benjamin McGraw, Ph.D, Pennsylvania State University For the last 50 years, pollinator populations have been experiencing a global decline. However, within the last decade the public has become increasingly aware of the severity and extent of the problem. Although scientists agree that many factors are involved in bee declines globally, pesticides and in particular, common turfgrass insecticides, have been implicated as a major driver of losses. While the green industry and its members’ management practices stand in the crosshairs of environmental regulations, a movement is taking place to have golf courses become havens for managed and native bee populations. Beekeeping has become one method where superintendents can proactively assist in the promotion of pollinators and golf course environmental stewardship efforts, as well as forge relationships with the non-golfing public. The process is involved and requires some basic understanding of honey bee biology and population dynamics, beekeeping management practices and equipment, and pest control within the hive. This session will provide attendees the basic information on getting started with beekeeping (including equipment, time, and costs) as well as the common problems one may encounter.

Closing Keynote Fun Is Good

Creating Joy & Passion in Your Workplace and Career Mike Veeck

THURSDAY, 3:20–4:00 PM | INNOVATION THEATER

Join us for a humorous and inspirational closing keynote by Mike Veeck, a nationally renowned speaker, entrepreneur, college professor, marketing, promotions and customer care expert, and owner of multiple minor Mike league baseball teams across Veeck the country. Veeck has been inspiring organizations and fans for decades with his funny and thought-provoking stories, and has been featured on the NBC Nightly News, 60 Minutes, The Late Show with David Letterman and many other national media outlets. This track is all about soils, water and irrigation – and is directed at green industry professionals interacting with property owners.

PART I. UNDERSTANDING SOILS (8:00 AM – 10:00 AM) Dan Wheeler, University of Minnesota, Department of Soil, Water and Climate, will provide information on soils and the soil/water relationship. Through a combination of interactive stations and discussion, attendees will learn that accurate and quick determination of the soil particle size, soil color and soil structure all play important roles in the success of growing just about any vegetation on a site. Attendees will get their hands dirty by investigating these important soil properties, as well as discuss other soil interpretations that can be made from their proper analysis.

PART II. UNDERSTANDING IRRIGATION (1:30 PM – 2:30 PM) The afternoon will provide opportunity for more hands-on learning. Attendees will assemble sprinkler heads, and learn about important trends in irrigation equipment and technology, including smart controllers and rain sensors.

PART III. HOW TO EDUCATE YOUR CUSTOMERS AND HOMEOWNERS (2:30 PM – 3:20 PM) Sam Bauer, Extension Educator in Turfgrass Science, University of Minnesota, will discuss how to educate your customers about water, and the best way to answer questions about important soil/water/irrigation topics: • Water Conservation – How to Reduce Water Use • The Soil/Water Relationship • Using SMART Irrigation Controllers • Rain Sensors, soil moisture sensors, and weather stations Bauer will also share information on irrigation research that is currently taking place at the University of Minnesota.

Veeck’s philosophy is Fun is Good. • Fun is good for business because it creates a more engaged workforce. S KEYNOTE • Fun is good for customers because a more engaged WITH ALL PASSES workforce creates a better customer experience. • And fun is good for employees because more satisfied customers and more engaged employees create a happier, healthier, and more profitable employee environment. When we can find our joy and passion, great things happen in both our work world and in our personal lives. It makes perfect sense, yet it’s so hard to put into practice. Mike Veeck will show us how to take our work, but not ourselves, seriously. How to discover what brings us joy and then apply it to what we do. Veeck will make us think and laugh in the same minute – and provide great advice that we can put into practice immediately. Plan to leave Northern Green inspired and re-energized!

The Workforce, Labor and Health Care Reform: Update and Outlook

Gary Johnson, University of Minnesota

Craig Regelbrugge, AmericanHort

What was the soil pH on the site where you planted that last tree of the season? How about the percolation rate? Organic matter content? I’m not judging. We all overlook what’s below ground too often, but not on January 4 at the 2018 Northern Green. For 50 minutes, we’ll obsess about volumes and depths and organic matter, dig into soil flora and fauna, and dream of high oxygen diffusion rates.

Horticulture is a “human capital intensive” industry. Employers are struggling mightily to source and retain the people needed to get the job done. Health care is another key employee benefit and compliance challenge for the industry. Regelbrugge will bring us up to date on the latest state of play, and potential opportunities and threats ahead as employers struggle to manage these key challenges.

Managing Japanese Beetles in Residential Turf

Invasive Species/Noxious Weed Status Update

Jeff Hahn, University of Minnesota Extension

Jim Calkins, MNLA

In this session, we will talk about Japanese beetles as pests of turf. Jeff Hahn will discuss how to identify them and provide an understanding of their biology, including factors impacting their abundance. Hahn will describe their injury to turf and provide you with the best management options.

The spread of Oriental bittersweet and Japanese hops in southeastern Minnesota, the ongoing damage caused by garlic mustard and common and glossy buckthorn, and the recent discovery of Palmer amaranth in the state are examples of the growing threat of invasive species in Minnesota. Take a few minutes to learn how plants are assessed for possible inclusion on the Minnesota Noxious Weed List, gain a better understanding of how invasive species are regulated under the Minnesota Noxious Weed Law, and learn how noxious weeds are managed in the state including information about the development of a statewide, species-specific invasive species management plan for Minnesota. This is also an opportunity to learn which species are currently under review as potential noxious weeds in the state; Norway maple, winged burning bush, and Siberian peashrub are a few examples. These regulatory activities have implications for the environment and for the nursery and landscape industry, so stop by to get the latest information and share your thoughts on this important topic.

Reduced Risk Disease Control: How to Do It and Why It’s Important

Keynote: Fun Is Good – Creating Joy & Passion in Your Workplace and Career

Paul Koch, University of Wisconsin - Madison

Mike Veeck, Fun is Good

Pesticide use on turfgrass continues to be a target for increased regulation, and many superintendents are looking for ways to reduce the non-target impact of their pest management program while still providing high quality playing conditions. In this session, we will define risk in toxicological terms and discuss strategies for reducing the risk posed by turfgrass fungicide applications, focusing on the results from a 3-year study performed at the University of Wisconsin.

Join us for a humorous and inspirational closing keynote by Mike Veeck, a nationally renowned speaker, entrepreneur, college professor, marketing, promotions, and customer care expert and owner of multiple minor league baseball teams across the country. Veeck’s philosophy is that Fun is Good. • Fun is good for business because it creates a more engaged workforce. • Fun is good for customers because a more engaged workforce creates a better customer experience. • And fun is good for employees because more satisfied customers and more engaged employees create a happier, healthier, and more profitable employee environment. When we can find our joy and passion, great things happen, in both our work world and in our personal lives. It makes perfect sense, yet it’s so hard to put into practice. Mike Veeck shows us how to take our work seriously, but not ourselves. How to discover what brings us joy and then put it to practice in what we do. Veeck will make us think and laugh in the same minute – and provide great advice we can put into practice immediately. Leave Northern Green inspired and re-energized in your career and life!
