In order to make training available throughout our service region and beyond, we offer face-to-face offerings in many locations, and utilize technology to offer NLC LIVE Online™ and Anytime, Anywhere training. DELIVERY METHODS We offer various delivery methods to make our training convenient and accessible for you. We offer face-to-face, NLC LIVE Online™, and NLC Anytime, Anywhere deliveries. Face-to-face The traditional mode of course delivery, face-to-face courses allow you to participate in the same room as your classmates.

NLC LIVE Online™ You can be anywhere (e.g., at work, at home, in camp, on vacation) and still take training with others at the same time. All you need is: • Desktop or laptop computer • High speed Internet • Speakers and microphone, preferably a headset (if you do not have a microphone you can still use the chat function to ask questions or make comments). Important Information about NLC LIVE Online™ training: • All courses take place during Canadian Mountain Standard Time. • Courses are recorded and are made available to participants for 180 days or more. • Course attendance verification or course certification is only granted for those who participate as individuals. If you miss the class and view the recording, attendance verification and/or certification will not be granted (there are exceptions, contact CE&CT for more information). • If you are travelling outside of North America during your course and need access to course materials you will need to supply information about your travel locations and dates. AMP/MMP Information Session (MM01) This free course provides an informational overview of the Asset Maintenance Management Professional and Maintenance Management Professional certificates to help you decide if the program is for you. Course Hours: 1

Course 1: Asset Management Principles and Strategic Development (AMP001) In this course, you will gain an overview of the essentials of asset management in the context of ISO 5500x and identify opportunities for application of asset management concepts in your organization to realize value. Begin to discover asset management decision-making tools. Course Length: 10 weeks

Course 2: Asset Management Capabilities Development (AMP002) In this course, you will learn how to develop the organizational capability for engaging the workforce to achieve excellent asset management performance. Topics include organizational structure analysis to identify changes needed for a holistic asset management approach, change management, project management, systems thinking, training needs assessment, customer supplier relationships, adaptive organizations, and cultural discipline.

Course Length: 10 weeks Prerequisite: AMP Course 1: Asset Management Principles and Strategic Development

Course 3: Risk Management and Performance Improvement (AMP003)

In this course, you will obtain an overview of risk management tools and techniques and how these techniques can be used to drive performance improvement through the planning, decisionmaking, and operational phases of any corporate objective. See risk management in the context of holistic asset management in which all classes of assets are included: physical assets/equipment, knowledge/information assets, human resources, and strategy assets.

Course Length: 10 weeks Prerequisite: AMP Course 1: Asset Management Principles and Strategic Development

Course 4: Developing and Implementing Asset Lifecycle Delivery Activities (AMP004) In this course, you will gain an understanding of different characteristics and requirements for managing assets through the asset life cycle delivery stages from asset acquisition, through asset operations and maintenance, to asset disposal. Learn when to use various strategies and tactics and practice applying them to real-world examples. Course Length: 10 weeks Prerequisite: AMP Course 1: Asset Management Principles and Strategic Development

Course 5: Asset Knowledge Management (AMP005)

In this course, you will study asset information and knowledge management across the full asset lifecycle from the front-end engineering design through to the “operate and maintain� phase and eventually to asset retirement. Referring to ISO 14224, the course provides a strategic-level view of the important role that information and knowledge management play in an asset dependent organization. Course 6: Asset Management Capstone (AMP006)

Module 5: Developing and Implementing Maintenance Tactics

In this course, you will review the elements of the previous courses and take the opportunity to bring the concepts together in an applied project. The project requires the development of an Asset Management Policy and Strategy for an organization as well as the development and implementation of an Asset Management Plan for a particular class of assets.

(MMP005) This module focuses on maintenance efforts with the goal to ensure that physical assets safely, capably, reliably, and repeatedly perform to their designed specifications. The focus is on techniques to develop maintenance tactics that will address how the assets are used, how they are likely to fail, the consequence of failure, and identify maintenance tactics that are both feasible and worth doing.

Module 1: An Integrated Strategy for Maintenance Management (MMP001) This course introduces students to an integrated and holistic approach to maintenance and asset management. Course Hours: 15

Module 2: Production and Operations Management for the Maintenance Manager (MMP002) In this course, learn how maintenance strategies are linked with operational needs.

Module 3: Human Resource Management for the Maintenance Manager (MMP003) In this course, you will look at how human resources practices relate to the maintenance environment.

Module 4: Financial Management for the Maintenance Manager (MMP004) In this course, you will focus on the application of accounting and finance principles as it pertains to the maintenance management role.

Module 6: Maintenance Work Management (MMP006) In this course, you will study the fundamentals of the work management processes, look at the key steps in the process, and get a more detailed overview of the basics of planning, scheduling, and work coordination methods. Module 7: Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) (MMP007) In this course you will study the features, benefits, and effective use of a computerized maintenance management system or Enterprise Asset Management computerized maintenance work management process.

Module 8: Maintenance Management Capstone Project (MMP008) In this course, you will select a project that you will audit, assess, and improve your current maintenance department or develop a new maintenance strategy in your company. Course Hours: 30 Prerequisite: MMP Modules 1-7

Creating a Positive Learning Environment (ESI001)

In this course, you will get an overview of policies and procedures related to accommodating students. You will see how to identify potential issues and address them before they affect your students. Using Universal Design for Learning concepts and strategies, you will practice adapting your course to make it more accessible for all learners.

In this course, you will identify strategies to create and maintain an inclusive classroom climate and to maintain and reinforce rapport throughout the learning situation.

Basic Security Guard Training (SA211-OL) NEW! In this online course you will master the basics of becoming a licensed security guard. You will also learn advanced patrol techniques, how to handle difficult people, and situations and crisis management. Course Hours: 40

Certified Asset Management Assessor (CAMA) Preparation (CAMA01) The Certified Asset Management Assessor certification establishes an individual’s credentials in asset management knowledge and comprehension globally. Developed and authorized by PEMAC, this course prepares asset management professionals who are considering writing the CAMA exam.

Emergency Medical Responder: Naloxone Administration (EMRN1000) In this course, you will gain the competencies to administer naloxone. The theory portion of the course is self-paced and includes coursework and a final exam. A practical component is scheduled upon successful completion of the coursework and final exam. Welding - B Pressure or CWB Exam Preparation (TT055) This workshop will provide you with seven hours per registered day of instructional support and testing of completed coupons by bend testing. Training will be set up specific to desired welding process and test positions. All materials and tools will be provided. Students can choose from one to five days. (FS003) This course will appeal to a broad range of forest workers at all education levels. The goal of this course is to increase understanding of the broader environmental, social, and economic impacts of resource development in Alberta, and the manner in which the Government of Alberta and industrial partners are addressing those impacts.

Introduction to Forest Management

(WOLF0076) This course aims to introduce the key elements of forest management in Alberta to forest workers at all education levels. It will introduce the concepts of forestry management (including a historical context), the importance of the forest industry in Alberta, and forest management trends. Course Hours: 6

Plant Identification and Introduction to Site Classification (AFS001)

In this course, you will learn to identify a variety of Boreal plants through knowledge of the plants, characteristic parts, life cycles, site, soils and moisture preferences, and associations with other plant types, in a variety of seasonal life stages. These plant associations are the basis for an understanding of boreal ecosystems. Course Hours: 6

Water and Wastewater Operator Preparation Level 1 (WTR01)

In this course, you will become proficient in the support systems and technical aspects of water and wastewater treatment, water distribution, and wastewater collection. This training is designed to prepare existing operators or new incumbents to learn more about the roles and responsibilities of water and wastewater operators, and to write the Level 1 Water and Wastewater Operator provincial certification exam with Alberta Environment and Parks. Course Hours: 52 Prerequisite: Grade 10 reading level and grade 10 math level (basic algebra) is strongly recommended. Additional requirements must be met for certification. The participant will be able to understand the factors affecting the forestry equipment profitability, identify the components of ownership costs, define and list overhead costs associated with forestry equipment, identify and describe the components of operating costs, and demonstrate the impacts of four operating scenarios using a cost structure worksheet.

(WOLF0090) This course is designed for operators and woodland field personnel using a wide variety of maps for different forest activities.

(WOLF0023) This course aims to increase the prevention and detection of wildfires and reduce the cost and extent of damage from wildfires occurring in Alberta. This increases workplace safety by reducing the number of machine fires, improving response to fire, and limiting resulting property value losses.

Woodland Operations Spill Response (WOLF0013) This course is designed to prepare the workforce to reduce the chances of a spill occurring and, if a spill does occur, to reduce the size and extent of damage that results. Course Hours: 6

This course presents what is currently the most widely accepted system of monitoring stream crossings in Alberta. As inspectors become more highly skilled at identifying problems with bridges and culverts, they will be better prepared to generate solutions and reduce liability. The course will provide the industrial user with a standard approach to crossing inspection and risk assessment.

This course will provide the industrial user with an understanding of hydrological factors that affect the crossing design. This will improve communication between the engineers and reduce crossing failures. Course Hours: 6

Woodland Water Legislation

(WOLF0098) Watercourse crossings in Alberta are regulated mainly by five pieces of legislation. This course presents the intent of these standards and their key features. As people learn what the requirements are for specific watercourse types, they will be better prepared to choose the correct crossings, install them competently, and ultimately reduce legal liability. Woodland Water Quality, Erosion Control, and Crossing Construction

(FS005) This course is intended to provide information about the fundamentals of water quality and develop competency in watercourse crossing construction. By learning the fundamentals, industrial construction personnel will create less sedimentation, reduce losses to aquatic habitats, and reduce construction and maintenance costs. The company will also be exposed to less risk of contravening existing provincial and federal legislation. Course Hours: 6

Woodland Wildfire Awareness

(AFS002) This course will show the severity of the risk to ecosystems, infrastructure, and to human life. The course will describe the contributing factors and identify trends in risk. There will be a discussion of some mitigation strategies to reduce risks. Course Hours: 6

This course is designed for forest managers in Alberta who apply wildlife conservation principles in all phases of harvest planning. This course provides information aimed at owners, managers, and safety personnel, as it relates to Power Mobile Equipment (PME). Topics include what is PME, the worker’s rights, and details occupational health and safety offences and penalties. Professional Driver Improvement Course (DT004-OL)

Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) (SA001-OL) Online

This course is specifically for drivers involved in the transportation field, including buses and vehicles designated for Class 3 and Class 1. Completers are eligible for a three demerit reduction on their Alberta driving record.

This online course includes a thorough exam and printable certificate to meet Transport Canada’s training requirements for all employees involved in the transportation of dangerous goods.

Utility-Terrain Vehicle (UTV) Safety

(SA070) This course will help you become a safer and more competent snowmobile operator. Topics covered include safety, operations, and basic maintenance. Attendees must provide their own snowmobile and appropriate cold-weather attire is required. Course Hours: 7

Standard First Aid - Level C CPR/AED (FA001) This course includes treatment for choking, control of bleeding, treatment and prevention of shock, child and infant resuscitation, and one adult and two-rescuer CPR and AED use. Fractures of the limbs, head and spinal injuries, eye injuries, burns, medical conditions, environmental injuries, wound care, and secondary survey are also covered. This course requires that you be physically fit for the practical exercises. Course Hours: 16

Standard First Aid - Level C CPR/AED Recertification (FA012) This course is intended for those who have a current Standard First Aid – Level C certificate and includes a review of essential skills with a focus on theoretical and practical skills testing. Includes Level C CPR recertification and AED recertification.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) (SA001)

(SA1102) This course will certify you as an Utility-Terrain Vehicle (UTV) rider by the Alberta Safety Council. Students must supply their own registered and insured UTV, safety gear, and weather appropriate clothing. Two riders may share one machine. All machines will undergo a pre-trip safety inspection. Course Hours: 6

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) (SA002) This industry recognized course deals with the proper labeling and the understanding of those labels for controlled products used in the industry. Also, the rights of the worker and employees when dealing with controlled substances will be covered along with what a Material Safety Data Sheet is and how it is used. This is an Alberta Construction Safety Association certified course.

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) (SA002-OL) Online This online course provides initial or recertification training on the revised Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. Life Skills

Pre-Employment Trades

Assist your clients to develop the skills, characteristics, and attitudes necessary to succeed in the workplace or in further schooling. The Life Skills program contains 15 core lessons which are presented in the classroom. The Life Skills coach follows the “Saskatchewan NewStart” life management training method.

Prepare your clients to challenge their first period apprenticeship exam through training that combines apprenticeship theory instruction with hands-on trade skills development. Clients successfully challenging the apprenticeship exam will be able to carry on with apprenticeship once they are signed on with an appropriate employer.

General Education Development (GED) Preparation

The Job Readiness program is a three-month program designed to assist students to improve their employability skills. The program helps students to build the skills necessary to successfully take control of the direction of their lives and improve personal awareness. Students will develop valuable skills to succeed in education, work, and life.

Prepare your clients to successfully write the General Educational Development (GED) examinations in order to obtain their Alberta High School Equivalency Diploma.

Trades Preparation Prepare your clients to pursue trades-related training opportunities by upgrading academics and exploring hands-on trades skills. Students will be prepared to write the trades entrance exam for their trade of choice. This program includes: effective study skills, safe work practices, and the basic knowledge and skills required to work as a labourer or apprentice in a variety of trades and industries.

Job Readiness

Forest Operations Metrics and Management Prepare your clients to participate in the forest industry. Students will be prepared for a wide variety of entry-level positions in forest operations or to participate in a logging training program. Topics covered may include woodland navigation using GPS and compass, woodland stewardship, woodland wildlife and biodiversity, and safety training.

Northern Lakes College has established Community Adult Learning Programs in eight communities within the NLC service region. Students are able to take their online courses at the local NLC campus, or even at home. Students have access to many supports including counselling, tutoring, and other student success services. For CALP students, the cost of tuition and books is covered.

Registering for CE&CT courses is easy! Three ways to register!

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for all Continuing Education & Corporate Training courses. Some courses fill quickly. In most cases you can be added to a waiting list and contacted if a space becomes available or if there are enough students for a second class. There is no application process required just find your courses and add them to your shopping cart to register online. From there you can create an account if you are a new student. If you are a returning student all you have to do is enter your student ID and password, and update your contact information if necessary. Register! It’s easy as 1-2-3!

Continuing Education Portal: The online Continuing Education portal is a secure portal where you can register and make payment online for your Continuing Education & Corporate Training course. www.northernlakescollege.ca/online-registration 1. Log in using your student ID and password if you are a returning student. 2. Create an account if you are a new student or if you have forgotten your student ID and password. 3. Employers who wish to sponsor individuals can provide them with a Purchase Order or Sponsor Letter that lists the following: course name, date, location, person you wish to sponsor, and the company address for invoicing purposes. The employee can register by selecting Purchase Order /Sponsor Letter as the form of payment and upload the document. 4. Cancellation Northern Lakes College reserves the right to reschedule or cancel a course that lacks sufficient registrations to provide a satisfactory learning atmosphere. In this event, your registration will be refunded in full or applied to the rescheduled course. You will be notified by email if changes or cancellations are made.

Payments and Fees Fees are due at the time of registration. We accept the following methods of payment: Cash, MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Cheque, Money Order, Debit, Purchase Order, or Gift Card.

Prerequisites All course prerequisites are listed on our website if applicable. If you register without the required courses, you will receive an email requesting proof of completion. If this is not submitted by the deadline, you will be withdrawn from the course.

Books, Materials, and Shipping Fees Books, materials, and shipping fees are nonrefundable.

Refunds, Withdrawals, and Transfers Refund, withdrawal, and transfer policies are listed with each course. Visit our website for complete details. They are also outlined on the Confirmation of Registration you receive by email after enrolling in your course. Exceptions to the policies can be arranged by contacting our office for approval. If a refund or transfer is approved, reimbursement will be made via the original payment method. Fees paid by credit card will be refunded to the same credit card with proof of payment. Cheques will be issued for all other forms of payment and may take up to two weeks or more to process. Cheques will be sent to the address on the student’s account unless payment was made by a company. Failure to attend does not constitute a withdrawal. It is the student’s responsibility to take note of the Continuing Education Refund, Withdrawal, and Transfer policy. To withdraw or transfer from a course, the student enrolled in the course must contact our office via email work@northernlakescollege.ca or phone the Continuing Education office 780849-8623 during regular business hours 8:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The effective date of the withdrawal is the date you contact our office by phone or email and the email or call is received by the Continuing Education office.
