Design Excellence

Imagine a creative force led by original ideas, in a place where traditional design seems like a thing of the past. Where contemporary artefacts find new friends, and award-winning classics are remade with state-of-the-art materials. Where the good times are just beginning, and the creative flow never ends. Where all the products are fun to use and easy to enjoy, and bridge the gap between everyday functionality and ideals of luxury, efficiency and style. Look no further than Northern Lighting, a heady hotspot of creative cool. From our base in Oslo, we are guided by Scandinavian simplicity as we seek new expressions for interior lighting. Our inspirations come from the northern light as we revel in the rays of the summer sun and watch the subtle illuminations of the winter sky. Whether crafted into pendant lights, floor lamps, wall lights or table lamps, each product we make enhances the quality of ambient light. We create soft lighting that makes surroundings seem soothing and relaxing, or use diffused glows to create moody tones. Our brighter lights charge the atmosphere with energy that uplifts and invigorates, while brilliant spots highlight individual objects, or floodlight specific areas. Since the studio was established in 2005, our designs have found homes in lighting showrooms and retail outlets around the globe. We work closely with architects and interior designers to create new dialogues about lighting and find solutions for a wide variety of sites. As Northern Lighting’s products illuminate interiors throughout the world, our commitment to quality, sustainability and design excellence travels with them.

Resembling cult objects more than conventional lighting, the designs developed by Northern Lighting are not light fixtures as you once knew them. Individually assembled and finished by hand, the products combine creative expression with quality craftsmanship. Each design is conceived as a gesture of simplicity, yet we make space for brilliant colours, funky details and witty inspirations too.

Crash Course Birger Dahl Words by Urda Blichfeldt

The award-winning designer Birger Dahl (1916-1998) carved his place in Scandinavian design history by creating a number of iconic lamps that forged a new vision of lighting design. His design philosophy was founded upon the belief that design should appeal to ordinary people and not be aimed towards a limited, wealthy elite—an ideal formed by the social democratic ideology that emerged during the post-war period. This meant that the design objects should be both functional, logical and honest, as well as accessible and affordable. The designers task was no longer limited to the aesthetic aspects of the object, but included the functional, ergonomic and economic, in the way that the object could be manufactured through techniques of mass production. His signature style reflects what we have come to think of as classic Scandinavian design—clean forms and strict geometric shapes, such as circles, cones and cylinders. Rather than focusing on decorative details or layers of ornamentation, he highlighted the shape of the design object. The main goal was for the object to be in complete harmony with its surrounding humans and architecture. His iconic lamps are a result of this philosophy. Designed in 1954 and manufactured by the electronics company Sønnico, the pendant lamp Dokka together with Birdy (1952) was the first lamps from Norway to receive a Golden Medal award at the prestigious Triennale di Milano. With it’s smooth contours, precise proportions and sleek enameled metal Dokka became one of the best-selling pendant lamps ever produced in Norway. During his formative years Dahl produced several more design icons, among them the lamp collection Birdy from 1952. Dahl’s simplistic design approach is probably one of the reasons why his work still appears modern today, and why his designs are so compatible with the interiors of modern time. In addition of being an acclaimed lighting designer, Birger Dahl is also considered to be one of Norway’s leading post-war interior architects. From 1945 he was central in the creation of what today is the Norwegian Interior Vol. 9

Architects and Furniture Association (NIL). He was also one of the founders of the Norwegian Industrial Designers Society in 1955, whose mission was to «spread knowledge of good industrial design and promote the cultural and commercial importance of the use of new design to the general public». This mission clearly defines the mindset that characterized the Post-war industrial designers, and is reflected in the Scandinavian design movement that emerged in the 1950s. The idea that beautiful and functional everyday objects should be affordable to all, was made possible by the increased availability of new low-cost materials and methods for mass production. Scandinavian design, including Birger Dahl’s work, often makes use of these low-cost materials, such as form-pressed wood, plastics, anodized or enameled aluminum or pressed steel. The term “Scandinavian design” originates from a design show that traveled the US and Canada under that name from 1954 to 1957. Birger Dahl was one of the designers that created the exhibit, with a goal to promote the «Scandinavian way of living» through showcasing various works by Scandinavian designers. Through this they also hoped to communicate the countries’ egalitarian values—the design objects were meant to convey the Scandinavian socialdemocratic tradition. They did not want Scandinavian design to be reduced to style, and so they emphasized how the objects displayed were based on ideology, and not style. (One might argue that this was partly because of the need for an identity that separated them from the American formalism.) Nevertheless, it became an important part of the Scandinavian design movement’s identity, and many of the democratic design ideals that characterized the movement survived, and are still affecting contemporary Scandinavian design. From a design history point of view, it’s interesting to notice how «indistinctive» Birger Dahl’s designs are, in their pure, simplistic minimalism, yet still they have become well known icons of Norwegian design. Rather than being designed as a decorative element of their surroundings, the products seem to be a logical result of how they are intended to be used and produced. The function is what creates the form of the design object. Even in today’s modern society, many of our needs for functionality remain the same. Over 50 years after their creation, several of Birger Dahl’s design classics are being relaunched and exhibited at modern design fairs—which only proves how he continues to be a pioneer of Scandinavian lighting today.

Birdy A Classic Light With a Colourful New Future.

This understated mid-century design was originally launched in 1952, but its classic proportions and sleek shape give it a timeless character. Created by award-winning Norwegian designer Birger Dahl, Birdy was created in response to modernist architecture, and its legacy continues today. This year, Northern Lighting launched a new version of Birdy to commemorate the centenary of Dahl’s birth in 1916. The new version is still the same stylish light source for tables, sideboards and desks, but will be produced in a numbered series. Made with the same shape and proportions as the original version, the shade, base and counterweight are coated in matt-finish Marsala developed by Pantone. Marsala is a blend of earthy, terracotta tones and subtle, wine-coloured tints. The striking new colour, combined with matt brass components, makes Birdy a stylish addition to any interior.
