Welcome! Petoskey
Petoskey sits on slopes overlooking the brilliant and alluring
water of Little Traverse Bay. More than just a collection of sweet, boutique shops (although it has those in numbers), Petoskey is the center of the area’s strong arts community, is a mecca for foodies, lovers of artisan microbrews, regional wine aficionados, nature buffs, sportsmen and entertainment seekers summer after enduring summer.
Area planners offer locals and tourists alike a cornucopia of
events, restaurants and attractions to visit after they have enjoyed the miles of lovely beaches stretching from luxurious Bay Harbor through Petoskey and past the historic Victorian homes of Bay View. More than just the state stone of fossilized coral from what was
once a warm, saltwater sea, the Petoskey area hosts a Summer Open House on June 7, followed by parades and celebrations with fireworks on July 4. There will be Art in the Park on July 20, and the much-awaited sidewalk sales July 26-27. August will remind visitors that it is still summer with the Festival on the Bay Aug. 15-17 followed closely by the Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair Aug. 20-25. Close by, Bay Harbor makes room for Fourth of July fun, the
annual Arts Festival July 26-27 and events such as the Vintage Car and Boat Festival June 20-22, In-Water Boat Show June 14-16 and a popular home tour in September. Explore an area full of fabulous yachts, golfing and sunny beaches at www.bayharbor.com. A little world in itself, Bay Harbor offers a slice of beautiful beside the water.
Bay View
Just north of Petoskey, Bay View found its origins as a camp
of tents filled with individuals sporting religious and moral fervor. Now, a collection of Victorian homes with all of the charm of a grande dame, Bay View is home to a summer music festival with national acclaim. Summer activities in Bay View also include a variety of recreational activities and classes, films and documentaries, weekly worship services, lectures and speakers. More information is available online at www.bayviewassociation. org or call 231-347-6225.

North of Petoskey, U.S. 31 pushes through landscapes hewn by lumberjacks and carved by glaciers. Travelers should watch for deer as they journey from Alanson to Brutus to Pellston to Levering to Carp Lake and then on to Mackinaw City where the Mighty Mac links the Lower Peninsula across the swift Straits of Mackinac to Michigan’s scenic Upper Peninsula. Along the black ribbon are pleasant surprises. In Alanson, float along the Inland Waterway with Crooked Lake and Crooked River, and drop in this year for the Alanson Riverfest Aug. 8-11. Pellston has been dubbed the “Icebox of the North” and although the temperatures can be frigid citizens still have their patriotic fervor to keep them warm as can be seen at the Veterans Memorial Project. Stop in Indian River and fish for sturgeon before visiting Cross in the Woods, a national shrine at 7078 M-68 for a view of the 28-foot-tall Man on the Cross which weighs in at 7 tons. And, don’t miss the annual Summerfest celebration in Indian River July 19-21. Turn off the lights at The Headlands International Dark Sky Park near Mackinaw City. To avoid light pollution organizers have designated this an official dark sky area to better see the night sky and perhaps catch a glimpse of Northern Lights. In its own little corner of the world on the shores of Lake Michigan, it is what the world felt like on evenings in centuries past. Stargazers on Beaver Island are even able to enjoy the park’s effects. The northernmost point in lower Michigan is Mackinaw City, a top tourist draw for decades. The
interesting re-enactments. Colonial Michilimackinac archaeological dig in North America. Although there are several events throughout the season of notable interest like the Zoo-de-Mack bicycle race May 17-19, and the Aug. 9-11 Ironworkers Festival, Mackinaw City shines as a holiday destination with Fourth of July events including fireworks and other pastimes coinciding with the annual Strawberry Social. Don’t forget the annual Labor Day walk across the Mackinac Bridge on Sept. 2.
Charlevoix The petunia-lined streets of Charlevoix are etched in the mind of anyone suffering from winter blues. Charlevoix commands summertime traffic to slow to a crawl along U.S. 31 whether from fantastic views of Round Lake harbor, the wondrous trendy cuisine or the double-leaf bascule bridge that provides easy access to both the Great Lakes and inland lakes. A haven for boaters of all types, golfers, beach goers and discerning boutique shoppers, Charlevoix is a bridge between north and south, between waters, between the physical world and that ambrosial piece of heaven that is too tempting to just drive by. There is entertainment aplenty and some events of note include the Run Charlevoix Marathon on June 22. The Charlevoix Summer Art Show is on June 29-30; the Apple Festival Oct. 11-13; and, without a doubt, the highlight of every summer, the Venetian Festival July 20-27, with fireworks, carnival, art, music, car show, decorated boat show and, of course, the annual Aquapalooza. Wineries
In restaurants, along winding country roads and in boutique shops, wine enthusiasts of every level are welcome to enjoy the bounties of the vines of Northern Michigan. A great way to entertain guests or spend a Saturday afternoon, the region is growing as a hot spot of tasting for reds, whites and everything in between.
Many of the wineries have won awards for their wines especially the rosés and marquettes. No matter if your journey takes you to downtown Petoskey or to the smaller boutiques, the one thing that will be

The highlight of the North is the natural beauty. Get out to see it firsthand on one of the many hiking trails in the area. Take your favorite furry companion but look online to make sure dogs are welcome. HARBOR SPRINGS The Offield Family Preserve is between Harbor Springs and nearby ski resorts, a gift to the Little Traverse Conservancy several years ago. It offers several miles of trails across 390 acres. Goodhart Farms Preserve features 7.5 miles of trails ideal for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The whole preserve is 665 acres. North of Harbor Springs is the Stutsmanville Bog, a natural area likely formed by a glacial feature called an ice block depression. The bog features a short, fern-lined trail, with benches and interpretive signs for environmental education. Visitors should park on the east side of State Road, just before Stutsmanville Road.

Visitors to Boyne Highlands Resort also have 24 miles of wide and wooded trails that allow for easy bicycling, as well as more challenging routes from the top of the hills and Boyne Highlands Bike Park. The park includes banked turns, jumps and narrow passages. Thorne Swift Nature Preserve offers a total of 1 1/2 miles of trails, dune-observation platform, pondobservation platform, gazebo, amphitheater and Elizabeth Kennedy Nature Center. The preserve and nature center are open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day 10 a.m. to one-half hour after sunset.Â

Island
Ferries from Mackinaw City and St. Ignace bring visitors from all over the world to Mackinac Island so they can take a step back in time, where no motorized vehicles are permitted. Horses and bicycles fill in as the preferred mode of transportation, and it’s not uncommon to see people in period dress, such as women in 18th century clothing or soldiers from the same period standing guard at Fort Mackinac. The island offers a variety of festivals and events throughout the warmer months including the annual Lilac Festival June 7-16, the Mackinac Island Fudge Festival from Aug. 23 and the Grand Hotel’s swanky Somewhere in Time Weekend Oct. 25-27. Golf Golf is more than a pastime, it’s a way of life for many. In fact, plenty believe the scent of a freshly cut fairway, the sight of a perfectly struck and airborne golf ball and the sweet sound when the ball drops in the hole are best experienced in Northern Michigan. It’s where the courses not only provide a range from easy to challenging links, but also views of the region’s alluring lakes, streams, woodlands and lakeside bluffs. It’s world-class golf and it’s all around. Most golf clubs and public courses open during spring and extend the playing season through the perfect summer weather, gorgeous autumn colors and right up until the snow flies. And there’s a place for all players: The beginner and weekend duffer, both low- andhigh-handicappers, social players and afterwork nine-holers, plus everyone in between who swings the clubs.
