Northern Plains Dance offers a distinguished recreational and pre-professional program in dance, combined with opportunities to perform in full scale productions. As a nonprofit organization, it is our mission to inspire the appreciation of dance through artistic excellence and to enrich the cultural landscape of our community. Our goal is to prepare students for futures as artists, engaged citizens, audience members, and responsible young men and women. Our curriculum focuses on strong technique that is rooted in the traditions of classical ballet and inspired by a contemporary vision of the future. This curriculum is designed to serve dancers of all ages by supporting the continuing quest for greater athleticism, artistry, grace, and musicality. Annual performances of classical and contemporary works are also an important part of the training model, allowing students to develop discipline, endurance, choreographic memory, and stage presence. Providing exceptional dance education, nurturing our students’ developing skills and lifelong love for dance extends far beyond the syllabus. We strive to challenge each student, whether he or she dances for enjoyment or pre-professional training, to explore his or her own potential as a performing artist. Our faculty members take great care to instruct students with proper technique and great discipline in an encouraging and supportive environment. In this packet you will find dates to remember, dress codes, tuition policies, production policies, and many other helpful pieces of information. Please read this packet fully, even if you are a returning student, as there have been some changes especially in the areas of tuition and class card policies. We rely on the generosity of our community to help us provide the most dance opportunities to the largest audience. Through monthly in-kind donations and fundraising activities in the academy we are able to continue to broaden our reach in our area and beyond. We greatly appreciate your participation in these efforts. We thank you for choosing Northern Plains Dance as the place to recieve the finest in dance training. Sincerely,

22.....................Snow White Hollis Mackintosh Heid, Director

Fundraising

NPD holds four Academy-based fundraisers per year. All students are asked to participate in the fundraisers to support the various programs that take place outside of the regular class schedule like outreach efforts and scholarship funds. Participation is strongly ENCOURAGED but not mandatory. At the close of each fundraiser (see Calendar on Page 1 for details) the student who has raised the most money will win a $100 Northern Plains Dance gift card. All students that participate will be entered into a drawing to win 1 of 4 $25 NPD gift cards. In addition, NPD hosts a number of public special event fundraisers throughout the year. If you would like more information on how to get involved please contact Northern Plains Dance at 701-530-0986 or dance@northernplainsdance.org.

Make an In-Kind Donation Did you know that Northern Plains Dance is a nonprofit organization and tuition only covers about 80% of our day-to-day operating costs. We depend on the generosity of our families and our community, to fill the gap and allow us to continue to bring the highest quality dance education to North Dakota. Of course, monetary donations are not the only way to support our dancers. Keep in mind that any donations to NPD are tax deductible. For a complete list of creative ways that you can do your part to support NPD visit www.northernplainsdance.org/support. In-Kind Donation If you have any of the following items lying around, consider donating them to NPD and take a tax deduction. NPD cannot assign a value to the donation, but we will issue you a tax receipt detailing the gift you made, then you can find the fair market value. Here are some basics we can always use: Sewing needles Black & white thread Garbage bags White copy paper Toilet paper Paper towels Band-Aids Stamps Painting Supplies If you love to shop online, our Amazon wish list can be found by searching “Northern Plains Dance Wish List.” (remember to use smile.amazon.com)

Amazon Smile This is how you set it up: 1. Go to smile.amazon.com 2. You can use your existing amazon account or create a new account if you aren’t an amazon member. 3. Choose the charity of your choice – search for Northern Plains Ballet, or use this link: http://smile.amazon.com/ ch/45-045013 4. Change your amazon bookmark to smile. amazon.com so your purchases will always help your chosen charity. Don’t worry if you miss this step your first time. Amazon will remind you!

There are also some items that we may accept: Sound equipment Lumber Office furniture (desks, swivel chairs, etc.) Computers or printers If we cannot accept your in-kind donation, please don’t take offense. We have limited storage space, so check with us first. Frequent Flyer Miles Use your frequent flyer miles to purchase a plane ticket for a guest dancer or teacher! It takes about 50,000 miles to fly a guest artist to and from Bismarck. Unfortunately, on many airlines we can’t combine miles. However, some airlines allow you to use leftover miles to purchase other items. If you don’t have enough miles to donate a plane ticket, why not get a gift card, rent a car, or buy office supplies for NPD? Credit Card Reward Points Would you consider redeeming reward points for gift cards that we can use for office supplies? Housing We often need housing for out-of-town artists, ranging from a guest room for a few days to a separate apartment for up to four weeks. Amazon Do you frequently shop on amazon.com? Type “smile.amazon. com” and donate a portion of your purchase towards NPD.

Drop Off/Pick Up & Parking

We appreciate your cooperation in these procedures. It can get very busy at NPD and we expect full compliance from all students, parents, siblings, and guests in this matter. NPD appreciates your cooperation in helping us get along with our neighbors. If there are any questions, please speak directly with an NPD staff member. Parking for NPD is available on the west side and at the back of the building. When parking on the west side of the building, please use angled parking against the NPD building or the Sanford Health warehouse. DO NOT PARALLEL PARK AGAINST EITHER BUILDING. The property to the east of NPD is owned by Turitto’s Dry-Cleaning, not by NPD, and is for Turitto’s customers only. The parking lot is posted and unauthorized vehicles will be towed. For the safety of students who are entering and exiting the building, do not use the alley to the east of NPD as a thoroughfare. DO NOT PARK OR DROP OFF IN THE ALLEY BETWEEN NPD AND TURITTO’S DRY-CLEANING. After 5:00 PM and on weekends, Great Plains Rehabilitation Services has generously allowed NPD families to use their parking lot located on the Northeast corner of 12th Street and Main Ave. Parents are responsible for ensuring their children’s safety when crossing the street. Do not park in the Great Plains Rehabilitation parking lot before 5:00 p.m. Your vehicle will be ticketed by the St. Alexius Security Office. NPD is not responsible for any fees acquired if parking rules are not followed. If you are concerned about your child walking through the parking lot alone, you may pull to the south side of the alley by the dumpsters where you can see your child walk up to the front door. Again, please do not drive through the alleyway between NPD and Turitto’s.

Tuition Policies Students at NPD register for the entire dance year, August through May. Registration will be accepted throughout the year for classes with openings and tuition will be prorated based on late start dates. No tuition reductions or refunds are made due to absences. Registration is accepted on a first come, first served basis as class sizes are limited. Registration may be completed online, by mail, or in person. Full payment is required to reserve a spot in a class. There is an annual registration fee of $15 per family. All students enrolled at NPD must provide a valid credit card/ debit card number to be kept on file. The first tuition payment is due at the time of enrollment, on or before the first day of the student’s class. Remaining tuition installments are due prior to the due dates listed on the right. If payment is not received according to this policy, late fees will be applied as outlined (See Late Tuition Penalty, page 7). NPD will not accept late payment requests. Tuition is non-refundable, but may be credited to the student’s account to be used within 90 days from the date that the proper paperwork is completed (see Withdrawal Policy, page 6). This credit may be used for class tuition only. Tuition Assistance applications are available upon request (see Etudes Fund: Tuition Assistance, page 7). Students receiving this assistance commit to a strict attendance policy and agree to complete volunteer hours.

Payment Methods

All students enrolled at NPD must provide a valid credit card/ debit card to be kept securely on file. If changes are made to the customers’ credit card over the course of the year, it is the responsibility of the customer to update the information through the Customer Portal. Upon registration, customers will select either automatic and standard billing. NPD encourages enrollment in the automatic payment plan. The credit card on file is run automatically two business days prior to the due set forth, unless written notice is received by the office two business days prior to the due date. Customers who select this plan will be invoiced one week prior to due dates. Customers who opt for standard payments will be invoiced one week prior to due dates. If payment is not received by 1:00 PM on the due dates listed, late fees will be added to the currently due invoice (See Late Tuition Penalty, page 7) and will be run on the card on file. Direct-pay checks sent from your bank must include student’s full name.

Quarterly tuition bears a 5% discount from the base amount that is billed throughout the academic year. The quarterly tuition amount on the registration form already reflects this discount.

Sibling Discount: For families with more than one child enrolled, a 10% discount will be applied to the sibling(s) of equal or lower tuition and will be calculated at the time of registration.

Tuition Due Dates: August 29* September 23 October 21* November 18 January 6* February 3 March 10* April 7

* Denotes Quarter Tuition due dates.

NPD accepts cash, check, Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Credit card payments can be made online, in person or on the phone. Again, please note that NPD requires a $15 minimum when using a credit/debit card. All returned checks will be routed to Check Control and assessed a $30 fee in addition to any fees assessed by Check Control. If a check for tuition payment is returned, the student will not be allowed to attend classes until tuition is paid in full, including late fees and returned check fees.

Customer Portal

NPD customers can manage their classes and account information online using the Customer Portal. Upon registration, customers will be sent a link and instructions to login for the first time. Customers can update their contact information, view their fees and payments, enroll into additional classes and events, and send online payments. If you have questions or need assistance with the Customer Portal, please contact us via phone or email.

Withdrawal Policy

Northern Plains Dance’s academic year runs August 29, 2016 through May 6, 2017. Parents are responsible for all tuition payments throughout the year. Although it is possible to add a class through the Customer Portal, any withdrawal of classes, even in the event of a class change must be initiated via the NPD office. If it becomes necessary to withdraw the student from classes, you must notify the office in writing via the Withdrawal Form. This form is available in the office or via e-mail. Please request this form as needed. Withdrawal cannot be completed by phone call, email notification or through a third party.

Withdrawal for any reason requires a Drop Form; please request this form as needed.

Students who withdraw from class prior to the end of the academic year with the proper paperwork are not obligated to pay remaining tuition but will not be refunded any tuition paid, unless withdrawing for injury or illness as supported by a doctor’s letter of inability to participate. Refunds are at the discretion of the Director. All Drop Forms require 2 business days of processing time. This means that if withdrawing from a class mid-session, Drop Forms must be received two business days prior to a class date in order to receive tuition credit for that class. In order to avoid charges on the tuition due dates listed above, all Drop Forms must be submitted two business days prior to payment processing. Notification of withdrawal two business days prior to the upcoming tuition due date will release you from any of your future tuition commitment. Tuition will not be refunded if drop notice is received after this deadline but may be applied to the student’s account at the discretion of the Director. Tuition will continue to be charged until the Drop Form is processed by the office. Funds remaining after the date will be held on student’s account as a tuition credit for up to three months (see Tuition Policies, page 5). Once students have withdrawn, they must re-register in order to resume classes and pay all applicable fees including the registration fee. If a student stops attending classes without adhering to this policy, the student must re-register and pay all applicable fees including the registration fee in addition to all past unpaid invoices in order to resume classes.

2016-2017

PAGE 6

Late Tuition Penalty

If tuition is not received according to policies outlined above, late fees will begin to accrue on the currently due invoice. Any account that is not paid by 12:00 noon on the due date will be assessd a penalty of $10.00. An additional penalty of $5.00 will be assessed at 1:00pm on each following business day until payment is received. After 5 late fees have been assessed to an account, the student will be dropped from all classes. In order to resume classes, the student must re-register and pay all applicable fees including the registration fee in addition to all past unpaid invoices.

Etudes Fund: Tuition Assistance Northern Plains Dance wants to share the joy of dance with students from the entire region. Based on funding and financial need, a limited number of Tuition Assistance Scholarships are available to students for each quarter during the school year.

Applications for Tuition Assistance Scholarships are due prior to the start of each quarter.

Applications for tuition assistance are available in the office and will be accepted at the beginning of each quarter and reviewed for renewal at the end of each month. Recipients will be asked to sign a letter of agreement that states they will complete volunteer hours at NPD for a minimum number of hours that corresponds to the amount of scholarship award. Parents of these students may also assist in carrying out responsibilities for the scholarship. If volunteer hours are not completed, students will automatically lose their Tuition Assistance and will be invoiced for the full amount due.

Punch Cards

Class punch cards can be used by NPD students who are 18 years of age or older. Please see the Academy brochure regarding the classes for which the cards may be used. Present punch cards to the instructor at the beginning of each class. The cost for a 6-class card is $80.00 and can be purchased at the front desk or online. All punch cards will expire 6 months after the purchase date. New for the 2016-2017 season, children ages 8-12 can attend the Yoga and Pilates class free with one adult using a class punch card. Limit one child per adult. Class card holders must visit northernplainsdance.org/classcard to confirm attendance. If a class doesn’t reach the required minimum of 3 students, NPD will email on the day of class letting students know it has been canceled. Please note that if you sign up for a class that is not canceled and you do not attend, you will forfeit a punch.

Dress Code

Northern Plains Dance enforces a dress code for a variety of reasons: it is part of the tradition and etiquette of dance, it instills discipline, it builds self-esteem within the dancer and class unit, it makes it easier for the teacher to see and correct mistakes, and lastly, it makes NPD students presentable to outside observers.

Check out our video on how to make a ballet bun at http://www.northernplainsdance.org/Academy

All students must wear the proper dance attire for each class. Dance clothes, including shoes, are not available to borrow from NPD. If students are not dressed in the proper attire, they will be given one written warning and be allowed to participate in that class. If they attend again without proper attire, they will sit out and observe class rather than actively participate. NPD may buy back gently used leotards and dance shoes at the discretion of the staff. Purchase price is dependent on the condition of the apparel.

Dancewear Basics

Dancewear is to be kept laundered and in good repair. Mark all dancewear and the inside of shoes with student’s full name. When outside, wear street clothes over your leotard and tights. Do not wear your dance shoes outside. Do not wear underwear with your leotard and tights.

Flesh-tone leotards are to be worn solely under costumes during performances. They are not permitted during class or rehearsal.

Flesh-tone leotards purchased for performances are not permitted in class or rehearsals.

Appearance in the Studio

A professional appearance should be maintained throughout all levels. Dressing rooms are provided; do not use the lobby for changing or storing clothing items. This is a public space. Do not enter the studio in your street clothes. Warm-ups and street clothes are not to be worn during class or rehearsal unless approved by the instructor. Hair must be neat and fixed securely out of the face. No large ornate hair decorations are permitted. Visit NPD’s website for video instructions on how to do a ballet bun.

Do not use the lobby for changing or storing clothing items.

Jewelry is not permitted in class. Do not use bathrooms to change or do your hair.

Where to Purchase Dancewear

Dancewear can be purchased through NPD. Note that a $15 minimum purchase is required for credit card transactions. Northern Plains Dance stocks everything required by the dress code. If you need to purchase something that is not in stock or as a special order, all orders must be made through the Dancewear Order form available by asking any staff member. “House Shoes” purchased at Wal-Mart or Target are not permitted for NPD’s classes.

Student Charge Permission

In order for students to charge items to the card on file, NPD must have a Charge Permission form on file. This form will be available in the lobby or via email.

Class Placement

Great care is taken in the placement process as well as the construction of class schedules and the assignment of teachers. Each level is tailored to include students within a range of development, so there will be a range of ability in each level. Students are placed according to their current stage of ability, physical and psychological development, and age. Students progress faster by spending the time necessary to master fundamentals, rather than rushing ahead to a more advanced level.

NPD requires a $15 minimum on all credit card purchases.

All class placements are at the sole discretion of the NPD faculty. It is common for a student to remain in a particular level for two or more years. Placement of returning students is always a collective faculty decision. NPD faculty reserves the right to re-evaluate a student’s placement at any time, based on factors, including but not limited to performance and attitude. Questions regarding placement should be addressed to the Director. NPD reserves the right to place students in a different level than age dictates. Such placement is based solely on the recommendation of the faculty.

It is common for a student to remain in a particular level for two or more years.

Summer dance experience, as well as mental and physical maturation over the summer, can result in dramatic changes in a student’s progress.

Attendance

Regular attendance is essential to the development of students and also plays a key role in issues such as level placement, performance casting, and scholarships. We cannot overstress the importance of regular attendance in class. If you know ahead of time that your child will be missing class, please notify NPD so his/her absence can be considered excused. Excused absences will permit the student to attend a make-up class. Unexcused absences cannot be made-up in other classes and will count against the student’s attendance record. Students in classes that meet once a week are allowed to miss 2 classes per quarter (or 1 a month). Students in classes that meet two or more times a week are allowed to miss 5 per quarter (or 3 per month) classes. If a student misses more than the allotted number of absences, they will not be allowed to make up the missed classes. All requests for makeup classes must be made online. There will be no tuition credit or reduction granted for absences. Missed classes may be a factor in casting choices and class placement.

Important Terms: Excused Absence: an absence from class reported to the office prior to class beginning. This is eligible for an appropriate make-up class. Unexcused Absence: an absence that is not reported before the start of class. This is not eligible for a make-up class and will count against the student’s attendance record.

Make-Up Classes

Making up missed classes is an option, not a requirement. Makeup classes are available to students who have an excused absence or for classes cancelled by NPD. Tuition will not be reimbursed for any absence or cancellation. All requests for makeup classes must be made online at www.northernplainsdance.org/absence. A make-up slip can be picked up in the office after an absence has been reported or after a class has been cancelled. This slip is required to attend the appropriate make-up class. You may make up a class up to 30 days following the absence.

All requests for makeup classes must be made online at northernplainsdance. org/absence

Missed classes must be made up in a similar class. You will be prompted to pick the appropriate make-up class time at the time of reporting online.

Cancellations

Any class with an enrollment of less than four after the first month of classes will be cancelled by NPD and students will be transferred to a class of equal level and value. If a suitable alternative cannot be found, NPD will refund the tuition for the unused classes minus the registration fee. Should a class drop below four students anytime during the academic year, NPD will work with the parents to find a suitable class within the same level. No refunds will be given if a student withdraws from a class that is not cancelled by NPD. A teacher may cancel a class session if only one student is present with no refunds or credits given to the student. In the event that Bismarck Public Schools cancels school or after school activities, NPD will also be closed. Notification of cancellation will be on Facebook, Customer Portal, and KFYR updates. NPD will not e-mail cancellation notifications. If NPD cancels a class session for any reason including weather, students will be allowed to make up the class in a similar class of the same level within 30 days (see Make-up Classes, page 11).

Lobby Rules:

Etiquette & Behavior

Part of the tradition of dance is an emphasis on etiquette that is passed down from generation to generation. NPD expects its students to be a part of this tradition. The first element of this tradition is respect for the study of dance, the studio, teachers, and fellow students. It is essential that students display a professional attitude every time they enter the building. A good working relationship based on mutual respect between students and instructors, as well as between students, is necessary for the well-being and progress of the students. Students, parents, and guests are to be polite and courteous at all times. We expect these rules to be followed by all of our instructors, students, and their families, including anyone that is picking up or dropping off a student. These rules should serve as guidelines for proper behavior of not only students, but of parents and other guests. Courtesy and good manners are always expected and encouraged. We provide seating in the lobby as a courtesy to the families of our students to wait while their student is in class. We require that everything in our lobby is treated with respect. Parents are expected to wait only in the lobby and to meet their children there after the class. Students, parents, siblings, and all guests in NPD are to be quiet when waiting. Older dancers are role models and must place high value on this responsibility to help model good behavior for those who follow. Younger students make it their business to know everything about their role models. Please behave maturely.

Be quiet and respectful of classes already in session No climbing on furniture No running or roughhousing Stay out of lobby desk area Do not take items from the counter or refrigerator. Do not use the lobby for changing or storing clothing items. This is a public space. All student, siblings, parents, and guest are expected to follow these rules or will be asked to leave.

Any violation of etiquette will be addressed by the Director in a telephone call or email to the parents of the student. Repeated or extreme violations could result in expulsion from NPD with no refund of tuition.

PAGE 12

Punctuality

Just as attendance is very important, so is being timely. All students should arrive a minimum of five minutes early for each class. Class will start at the designated time. If students arrive 15 minutes late to class, they must sit out and observe. This is for the physical safety of the students. Students may not enter class late or leave class early without the teacher’s permission. If you are having difficulty getting your child to class on time, please notify NPD and another class will be suggested for you.

NPD Bullying Policy

Definition: Unwanted, aggressive behavior among individuals that involves a real or perceived power imbalance and is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose. Policy: Bullying is not tolerated at NPD. We expect mutual respect between our students, staff, and families. Any concerns should be directly reported to the Director. Any incidents of bullying will be brought before our Board of Directors for disciplinary action.

Complaint Policy

Written complaints may be sent to Northern Plains Dance at 1125 E Main Avenue Bismarck, ND 58501 or by e-mail at dance@ northernplainsdance.org. Verbal complaints may be made by phone to (701) 530-0986 or in person to any of Northern Plains Dance’s staff.

Lobby, Hallway, & Dressing Rooms

We provide seating in the lobby for the families of our students to wait while their student is in class. We require that the furniture and anything else in our lobby is treated with the same level of respect that you would treat materials in a house in which you are a guest. This includes replacing any dancewear you may browse through and ensuring that younger siblings are supervised and not climbing or jumping on the furniture. We ask that you also do not enter the lobby desk area. We appreciate your cooperation in this, as furniture is expensive to replace and we want to continue to offer this comfortable space for our families.

Lost & Found: The lost and found is located next to the front door in the lobby.

Parents who wish to stay at NPD during their child’s class must wait in the lobby and are asked to meet their children there after class. Students may wait for class to begin in the lobby, dressing room areas, or hallways. Students, parents, siblings, and all guests in NPD are to be quiet when waiting for their class to begin, showing respect to those classes already in session. Siblings of students and other small children should never be left unattended.

Do not take items on the counter or in the refrigerator. The dressing rooms are for the use of all NPD students. Dressing rooms are to be kept clean. If students wish to keep dance clothes at the studio, they must provide a plastic container labeled with the student’s name in which to keep them. Uncontained items will be placed in the lost and found. Items left in the studios will be collected at the end of the day and placed in the lost and found bin located in the lobby by the front door, which will be emptied and donated at the end of each month. We require all students to label their dancewear and shoes to ensure that personal items are recovered.

The best way to keep track of your belongings is to keep everything in a dance bag. Everything you need travels from home, to the studio, and into the classroom with you in an organized manner.

Students are responsible for the disposal of their garbage and are expected to treat the facilities, furniture, and equipment with respect. Please check the space you use for debris when leaving the studio. Trash cans and recycling bins are located in the lobby, dressing rooms, bathrooms, and studios.

Personal Belongings

Do not bring valuables into the building. NPD assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen property. Dance bags should be brought into the studio, leaving space to enter and exit the room. Never leave dance bags or belongings in the hallway. Always keep wallets and purses in the studio, not in the dressing room. Theft of property by an NPD student will result in immediate expulsion with no refund of tuition given.

Studios

Come to class prepared to learn. Do not enter a studio without being invited by an instructor. There are barres and mirrors in each of the studios. Barres are not to be pulled or sat on. Mirrors are breakable and easily smudged; they are not to be touched. Students must ask permission before leaving the classroom. Raise a hand to ask questions during class. Students are encouraged to ask questions pertaining to what they are learning. Students are asked to devote their concentration to their personal performance; thus, side conversations are not permitted during any class or rehearsal. Parties or events that are not official NPD events are not to be discussed at the studio.

Studio Etiquette Overview: Be on time. Come to class prepared and dressed appropriately. Ask instructor for permission to enter and leave. No sitting during class unless instructed to do so. Raise your hand to ask questions. Treat all others, students and instructors, with courtesy and respect.

Students may not sit during class. This causes the muscles to cool down and may result in injury by resuming exercise when cold. Food and beverages may be consumed in the lobby only. No gum, candy, cough drops, etc. in class. Only bottles of water are permitted in the studios; no cups will be allowed. Cell phones are not permitted in the studios. Students are expected to pay attention to the instructor and maintain suitable composure for their age. If a student continually disrupts class, NPD may call for parental involvement. NPD will not tolerate emotional outbursts or swearing in the studio. If there is a problem, please make an appointment with the Director to resolve any conflict that may arise.

Speaking with an Instructor

If you need to talk to an instructor, contact NPD via email or phone prior to 4:00 PM on weekdays. Do not try to speak with an instructor between classes.

Do not try to speak with an instructor between classes, it makes them late for their next class!

Parents are asked to direct any comments, problems, or questions to the Director via email or phone. The staff is not permitted to give out student or teacher phone numbers. Faculty and staff members should not be contacted on their personal phones or emails under any circumstance. Contact through these means will be considered harassment and treated as such.

Communication

It is imperative that NPD has your current email address so we can send you important notices. If there are changes to your email address or service providers, it is your responsibility to notify NPD. This handbook is your best source for NPD’s policies and rules. Bulletin boards located on the wall outside of the restrooms areanother source of current information. It is your responsibility to check your eamil and these bulletin boards on a regular basis for updates and changes in rehearsals, activities, fundraisers, and events.

Peek Weeks:

Class Observation

Observation of classes held by NPD is not permitted, as students are easily distracted and intimidated by adults that they do not know. However, NPD welcomes family and friends to watch class twice per year, during Peek Week. No observation is permitted during any production rehearsal at the studio.

Peek Week 1: October 17-22

Peek Week 2: May 1-6

October 17-22 May 1-6

Banned Substances

Alcohol, drugs, smoking, and tobacco use is prohibited for all NPD students on school property. Students disregarding this policy will face suspension and/or expulsion from NPD. Any student, parent or guest who is suspected of being under the influence of any substance or is suspected of providing any substance to another party will be asked to leave the property immediately and the authorities will be contacted.

Cameras & Videotaping

In respect of the privacy of the students, NPD does not allow photography or videography of classes, rehearsals or performances. Performance photos and videos may be purchased through NPD when available.

Production Policies

NPD strives for professional standards in performance. The below polices pertain to all three performances in our performance season.

Auditions

There is no charge for the audition process. Attendance at auditions is required for consideration for a role; however, attendance does not guarantee a role. At the time of audition, students will be required to list any specific dates they will not be available for rehearsals during the production period. Only dates listed at the time of audition will be considered an excused absence. Unexcused absence from rehearsal is grounds for removal from the production. Rehearsals are held on Saturdays between 12:30 PM and 6:00 PM and Thursdays between 5:30 PM and 8:00 PM. Daily mandatory rehearsals are held during production weeks. If students have more than two Saturday conflicts in a rehearsal period, they will not be cast in the production. Missing any mandatory rehearsals will result in dismissal from the production. All dates that the cast member will be missing rehearsals must be provided at the time of audition. These specific dates are used for detailed scheduling for rehearsals and costume fittings.

Important Terms to Know: Excused Absence: rehearsal absences must be reported at the time of auditions. Only dates listed at the time of audition will be considered excused. Unexcused Absence: any absence not reported at the time of audition. These are grounds for removal from the production. Mandatory: any meeting or rehearsal that must be attended. Missing these will result in a dismissal from the production.

Understudy:

Casting

Casting is determined by the NPD faculty to facilitate the best possible production. Casting decisions are not up for discussion or negotiation. Students may or may not be cast in the same roles as their classmates. Once cast, students are expected to attend all rehearsals. Understudies are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals and know the parts in which they are cast. When the cast list is posted, all deadlines must be met in order to maintain participation in the production.

Person who learns another’s role in order to be able to act as a replacement at short notice. The understudy is required to be at all rehearsals for this role.

Why Warm-Up?

Pointe Roles Dancers receiving roles on pointe will be required to take warmup class each Saturday prior to rehearsal as well as prior to all Production Week rehearsals and performances. Dancers receiving pointe roles who are not members of the Student Company will be required to pay for these classes in addition to other Production Fees. The Nutcracker 2016 pointe role fee: $100 Dance+ 2016 pointe role fee: $100 Snow White 2017 pointe role fee: $100

2016-2017

All dancers should make sure their muscles are supple and ready before dancing especially when dancing en pointe. There is an increased risk of injury when dancing en pointe when your body isn’t properly warmed up.

PAGE 17

Production Fees

Each cast member is required to pay a $75 Production Fee that covers the cost of costuming the dancers as well as the overhead costs of production. For each Production Fee paid, the family will receive two Level D tickets for a specific performance. The Production Fee is non-refundable. Each family will be required to make a Volunteer Deposit of $75. NPD will hold this check until the conclusion of the production to guarantee that each family participates in volunteer activities for a minimum of 3 hours and the cast members’ costumes are well maintained.

Each performance also has optional add-ons, such as: T-shirts Photos DVDs Cast Party

If a family does not participate in a minimum of 3 hours of volunteer activities or a costume is mistreated, NPD will not return the Volunteer Deposit at the conclusion of the performances. If a family does participate in a minimum of 3 hours of volunteer activities and costumes are well maintained, NPD will return the Volunteer Deposit at the conclusion of the performances. If at any time, a family feels that the fees associated with productions are not feasible, NPD will work with the family to ensure that they are able to participate. In addition to Production Fees and Volunteer Deposits, cast members will be required to purchase undergarments and shoes as outlined by NPD for their specific role. All performance dancewear is to be pristine at the time of performance: no holes, runs, un-sewn shoes, or shoes missing drawstrings will be allowed on stage. More information will be provided in the casting packet after auditions take place.

Rehearsals

Rehearsal schedules will be posted on the production website and on the production bulletin board one week prior to rehearsals. Rehearsals fall on Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons and, close to performance, may also occur on Sundays. Rehearsals will be held on the Wednesday of each production week. NPD understands that Wednesday is typically “church night” for many families but requires that students attend this Wednesday night rehearsal during production weeks. The same etiquette that is expected during studio class time is required during rehearsal or performance (see Etiquette & Behavior, pages 12-15). Each cast member is expected to sign in and out of each rehearsal. Cast members will not be considered present if they do not sign in.

PAGE 18

Mandatory Dates

Next to each performance, mandatory dates are listed. Cast members must be present at all of these dates in order to perform in the production. Once auditions are complete, additional mandatory dates (such as costume fittings) will be determined based on excused absences listed on audition forms. The cast meeting is held on a Saturday at 12:30 PM, with the exception of Dance+, held on a Thursday. It will give you pertinent information regarding production week, costumes, make-up, and general housekeeping. This meeting is mandatory for a parent and the cast member. It is the responsibility of the parent in attendance to communicate the rules with any person involved in getting the student to and from rehearsals. The date of the cast meeting is also a day of mandatory rehearsals for all cast members. Studio Dress is mandatory for all cast members in order to go through the performance in costume as well as take cast photos. The Final Run-Through is the last time that the production will be rehearsed at the studio. Often, this is when the lighting designer and other production staff see the performance as a whole for the first time. Production Week rehearsals will be scheduled every day. Cast members are to be available to attend all scheduled rehearsals during production week.

Theater Rules

The theater atmosphere is comparable to that expected in a library. Cast members are expected to behave accordingly. Cast members are expected to respect others and obey all adults and theater personnel. All cast members are expected to respect their costumes and to place them on hangers after each use. This is the cast member’s job not that of the parents or room monitors. Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of your Volunteer Deposit. Cast members may not eat, drink, or sit in their costumes. All costume guidelines are to be followed, no exceptions. Makeup guidelines will be provided before performances and must be followed. Do not bring valuables to the theater. NPD takes no responsibility for lost or stolen items. Additional rules that apply to the theater include: • Absolutely no food or beverages in the theater. • No running, jumping, or rough play. • Come to the theater prepared and dressed appropriately or be ready to change into the appropriate dress. • Be quiet and respectful of any rehearsals already taking place. • Treat all students, instructors, guest choreographers, room attendants, theater employees, and door guards with courtesy and respect. • The staff does work during theater week and are available via e-mail or phone for questions. Please do not approach staff with questions during rehearsal times.
