Chairman’s Report On behalf of the Board of Northern Territory Cricket I am pleased to report on the activities of NT Cricket Ltd for the year 2022-2023, our second full year as a Company Limited by Guarantee and our 44th year of operation. This year the Board has been focused on adopting and implementing the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, consolidating and growing the Cricket 365 initiative, progressing the next 4-year funding agreement with Cricket Australia (CA) and succession planning. NTC Strategic Plan Our strategic plan identified three pillars of activity: Thriving cricket communities Strong Cricket pathways and teams Grow investment in Cricket I am pleased to report that, despite a disrupted year in having to recruit a new CEO and a delay in CA’s forward financial model, we have thriving cricket communities. Registrations have increased across a number of competitions, and importantly we have seen an increase in our key target markets in 5-12 year olds (+34%) and Women & Girls (+85%).

9

In our Pathways it was pleasing to see our Senior Men’s NT Strike Team take out the CDU

Top End T20 Series against the Pakistan Shaheens in a competition which included Papua New Guinea, ACT and two BBL Franchise Academies. Tom Menzies’ selection in the Australian Under 19 Team as a 17-year old is also a highpoint, and great recognition for so many people who have invested significant time in junior cricket in the Territory over the years. Our sustainability is linked to our engagement with Australian Cricket and the contribution we can make to the game nationally. Cricket 365 is our chosen vehicle for this growth and this year we exceeded all expectations with the coverage and recognition of Cricket 365 in only its third year. The CEO’s report will provide more on this exciting aspect of our strategy and it was good to see cricket back at TIO Stadium.

CA Funding Agreement Many of you would have seen in the media that early in 2023 CA resolved a new media rights sponsorship and agreed a new 4-year Memorandum of Assocation (MoU) with the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA). COVID-19 had already taken a big slice of CA’s reserves and so when it came time to resolve the 4-year funding agreement with the States and Territories (S&T) CA had little left to distribute to the S&T to grow the game.

New CEO We were delighted that Gavin Dovey, Carly and their family chose Darwin as home when Gavin accepted the role of CEO of NTC Ltd. Gavin has worked incredibly hard over the past 10 months to engage with local stakeholders and at the same time review our structure and deliver through his wide networks a very successful third edition of Cricket 365.

As a consequence, the new Chair of CA Mike Baird AO suggested a 1-year funding agreement to give CA and the States an opportunity to explore a list of identified investment opportunities and undertake an effectiveness and efficiency review of Australian Cricket in order to secure increased revenue. Whilst these actions may well see an increase in funding available to S&T, the actions did cause us to delay the appointment of some new staff roles until we had clarity on our financial position.

We are truly fortunate to have a cricket personality of his character and experience living and working in the NT.

It is now anticipated that S&T funding agreements will be resolved in the first half of 2024.

From left: Greg Rowell (CA Director), Bruce Walker (NTC Chair), Hon Natasha Fyles (NT Chief Minister), Stuart Kenny (NTC Director), Annie Andrews (NTC Director), Andrew Moo (NTC Director), Mike Baird (CA Chair), David Maddocks (CA Director), Richard Freudenstein (CA Director), Sarah Adam-Gedge (CA Director), Hon Nicole Manison (NT Deputy Chief Minister), Tony Edmonstone (ADG CEO), Jo Fitzpatrick (NTC Director), Vanessa Guthrie (CA Director), Nick Hockley (CA CEO), Rick Fletcher (NTC Director), Gavin Dovey (NTC CEO), Michael Bridge (NTMEC Chair) and Suzana Bishop (NTMEC CEO)

CA Board Visit In August 2023 the Board of Cricket Australia held a Board Meeting in Darwin where we were able to present the vision of NT Cricket and how it contributes to the national cricket business. This followed a meeting of S&T CEOs in Darwin in August 2022. CA have acknowledged that the Territories have been chronically underfunded in past years, and in addition to confirming this years’ budget, provided a small uplift to support the continued development of Cricket 365. In addition to the critical funding issues, the Board of NTC have focused on guiding an organisational re-structure of NTC, pursuing a 7-Year international content strategy in collaboration with NT Government, NT Major Events and CA, as well as progressing key projects such as a cricket specific Facilities Audit.

Cricket 365 Potential The other unforeseen impact of Cricket 365 was the sponsorship obtained for this year’s event. NTC achieved the largest single sponsorship in our history, and from a company who is currently not even based or operating in Australia. This is just one small illustration of the untapped potential of the cricket in north Australia concept. In response CA have listed ‘cricket in the north‘ as one of their shortlist Strategic Revenue and Investment opportunities. As I indicated last year, we have pursued these opportunities to align the NT with the Australian Cricket Network because it is clear to the Board that unless we are working towards the national interest, cricket and cricket investment in the north will struggle to grow and thrive over the long term.

The cricket landscape is changing rapidly, both nationally and internationally, as we move towards more individually contracted players linked to global franchises rather than the old jurisdictional model of S&T. The Board is attempting to position opportunities for the NT within this changing environment. The Board’s role is to find the balance between the external pressures on cricket and the local aspirations of members in their clubs. Community Cricket It has been fantastic to see grassroots participation increase, and the standard of competition continue to rise. Congratulations to Southern Districts Cricket Club (SDCC) who took out the 2023 Darwin and Districts Cricket Competition (DDCC) Men’s Carlton Mid Premier Grade Competition, and Tracy Village 10

Cricket Club for winning the Quality People Women’s Competition. Nightcliff Cricket Club claimed the Casuarina All Sports Club One Day Final, while Waratah Cricket Club won the Carlton Mid T20 League. Congratulations to Complete Construction Cricket Club (CCCC) in Alice Springs who claimed the One Day Carlton Mid A-Grade title. Congratulations to Federal CC who claimed the Carlton Mid A Grade T20 competition. Rovers Cricket Club (RCC) took out the Yeperenye Shopping Centre Women’s Competition. NTC Directors I thank all Directors for their support in maintaining cricket’s leadership as a professional sporting business in the NT. Lachlan Baird has continued an exceptional job leading the Darwin Cricket Management Committee (DCMC) this past season under challenging circumstances. We look forward to the appointment of the new Head of Clubs and Competitions role to drive forward the DDCC under a more modern delivery model. Michael Trull has led Alice Springs Cricket Association (ASCA) with distinction and kept a watchful eye on our financial position through his participation in the Australian Cricket Finance Working Group.

11

I would like to acknowledge the contribution of Dr Richard Johnson who is stepping down from the Board due to his professional commitments as a Director at Alice Springs Hospital. Since 2018 Richard‘s skills, experience and voice was invaluable to the Board in the evolution of our governance,

and more broadly in the progress and growth of the women’s game, This year the Board welcomed Stuart Kenny as a Board appointed Director for a threeyear term and we re-appointed Rick Fletcher for a further year to enable us to explore establishing a different delivery model in remote communities. NT Cricket Staff I commend Gavin Dovey as incoming CEO and all of our NT Cricket staff for their dedication to the game and thank them for their tireless, and often thankless, work that goes on behind the scenes. I would particularly like to recognise their efforts this dry season where in addition to their normal expected duties, they managed to facilitate and deliver an unprecedented level of winter cricket content, including a massive 287 fixtures across a 183-day period. The Future I commend this annual report to you and trust you will be inspired by the direction and growth of NT Cricket. We now have platform for the next 5 years as we seek to unite and inspire the community in the NT to love and play cricket. I trust the forthcoming season presents you all with an opportunity to enjoy Australia’s favourite sport – a sport for all that makes Territorians proud.

Dr Bruce Walker AM Chair NT Cricket Ltd

CEO message i believe we have a genuine opportunity to elevate the role the northern territory is currently playing in Australian Cricket. Gratitude Cricket has been very good to my family and I over a long period of time, and it is with great gratitude and excitement that this journey continues in leading our great game here in the Territory. I have a strong appreciation for history and take great pride in following in the footsteps of Jim Ford OAM, Neil Dalrymple, Andrew Ramsay, John Stock, Troy Watson and more recently Joel Morrison as the 7th Chief Executive Officer of Northern Territory Cricket since 1978. I’m fortunate to succeed Joel Morrison who did a simply outstanding job during his time as CEO. Born and bred in Darwin, Joel cared deeply about cricket in the Territory and laid many of the foundations from which we will now seek to capitalise. Congratulations to Joel, who beyond his invaluable contribution as NTC CEO, will continue to play an important role in the future of cricket here the Territory through his new position at Cricket Australia (CA). I would like to thank Dr Bruce Walker and the Board for the opportunity, I hope to serve our sport and community well. Priorities From the moment I walked in the front door at DXC Arena the focus has been on two immediate 13 priorities and opportunities:

Deepening Relationships Elevating the role we play in Australian Cricket In addition, my energy has been directed towards lobbying and advocating for an appropriate and sustainable CA funding base, as well as re-structuring the organisation to enhance our ability to achieve the strategic objectives. In particular I am pleased to have created the following new roles: Participation and Growth Leads to drive increased participation in 5-12 year olds, women and girls, and our Indigenous communities. Communications and Digital Coordinator to tell our story better, and promote and amplify the great things happening in our cricket community. Head of Clubs and Competitions to have leadership and oversight of clubs and competitions across the Territory, including taking ownership of leading, running and administering the Darwin and Districts Cricket Competitions (DDCC). I hope to be in a position to implement further positive organisational changes during the next 12 months in line with gaining clarity from CA regarding our funding agreement.

Building Bridges As a leader it really has been a gift to walk into such a diverse and welcoming community. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to listen to and spend time with the many passionate and dedicated people that work tirelessly for the betterment of our sport. Our cricket community has a cross-section of people with incredible history, experience, and enormous value to add. There is no joy or satisfaction in achieving things alone, so I look forward to continuing to find ways to build bridges, work together, and seek out those that want to engage in a positive and collaborative manner as we pursue progress and continuous improvement. Elevate the role we play Cricket in the Territory continues to offer enormous growth and potential. Not only to the sport here in Australia and overseas, but to the Territory more broadly through the commercial, tourism, education, political and economic opportunities that come from 20% of the world’s population being absolutely fanatical about the sport. It is now my drive and vision to see that potential reached, and to ‘elevate the role we currently play in Australian Cricket’ for the broader benefit of the game and our cricket communities. A former National Security Advisor to George W. Bush was once asked about the role Australia played in global affairs, to which he replied:

“Australia is in some sense punching above its weight, but way below its potential“

This is cricket in the Northern Territory, ‘above our weight but below our potential‘, and this is the challenge and opportunity that offers us the greatest prosperity. There is a limit to what is possible if we are disconnected, inward or isolationist. We should seek to and want to be part of something bigger, and realise to the fullest extent possible the benefits of our unique meteorology, geography and demography. We can be confident and ambitious in what we can offer a broader market and bigger audience, and what we seek in return. Cricket 365 The third edition of Cricket 365 offered more than a glimpse of the possibilities. It not only illustrated what we can offer nationally and globally, but it showcased cricket’s immense power and scale in comparison to our more localised competitors. In addition to obtaining increased support from the NT Government, NT Major Events and NT Tourism...

Cricket 365 attracted the single biggest commercial partnership in NT Cricket’s history and achieved a total broadcast viewership of over 16.5 million To put this into context, the 2021 Cricket 365 total viewership was 1 million, and in 2022 it was 4 million. This year’s event represents a 400% increase in total viewers. This year’s event also received record commercial backing from a wonderful portfolio of partners. It was terrific to have the significant ongoing support of Charles Darwin University (CDU), Airport Development Group (ADG), Real Estate Central (RE) and Territory

14

Sports Medicine (TSM), while expanding our partnerships with Dukes Cricket Balls and Quality People Recruitment. We also welcomed new event partners in Dafabet, a leading global sports betting agency, and territory owned and operated Thrifty. The CDU Men’s Strike League attracted, for the first-time, elite international and professional franchise Head Coaches in Shane Jurgensen (NZ BlackCaps), Simon Helmot (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Darren Berry (Hobart Hurricanes) and Mark Cosgrove (SACA Redbacks). While also welcoming outstanding young players from across S&T High Performance Programs with more than 8 ODIs, 17 T20Is, 138 First Class, 123 List-A and 250 Big Bash games of experience competing with and against local Territory players. True to its purpose, the combination of high-level coaching, playing talent and firstclass facilities offered the best opportunity in the country for players to compete and improve during the Australian winter, and a higher level of competition for our best young talent. The CDU Men’s Top End T20 Series expanded to 6 Teams, with the return of the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades surpassed only by the presence of the Pakistan Shaheens (Pakistan ‘A’) and the undefeated series winning efforts of our own NT Strike who claimed the Top End title in style.

International Cricket Elevating the role we play also means securing the return of senior international cricket to the Northern Territory for the first time in over 15 years. Both the Men’s and Women’s games have changed and evolved dramatically in this time, and today cricket offers the Territory major sporting events with economic, tourism and diplomacy benefits without peer. Cricket is now the second most popular sport in the world, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is now the second most valuable sporting league in the world, and the recent re-inclusion of cricket into the Olympics (LA28) is evidence of its global appeal.

In recent years the Australian Football League (AFL), National Rugby League (NRL), V8 Super Cars and National Basketball League (NBL) have all grown their major event presence here in the Territory. We need to ensure elite cricket is part of this picture, and that our competitors are not dominating the annual calendar. We took a significant first step towards turning this opportunity into a reality by both hosting the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s U19s East Asia Pacific World Cup Qualifiers in June, and more importantly working with the NT Government to install a drop-in wicket back into TIO Stadium (our only ICC Accredited Venue) for the first time since 2008.

We have an opportunity to break a long standing ‘boom’ or ‘bust’ cycle and secure a consistent body of international content over the course of the next 7 years. This opportunity has the potential to make a significant and lasting contribution to all aspects of the game here in the Territory, particularly in infrastructure, sponsorship and participation.

Building confidence in our ability to host international events and in our key sporting infrastructure is a critical component of this longterm strategic objective. Congratulations to Matthew Sandery (Head of Facilities) and his team for the successful execution of a highly complex and difficult drop-in wicket project.

I have seen first-hand the power of young kids being able to get up close to their sporting heroes

TIO Stadium is a fantastic venue in which to watch cricket, and it was wonderful to see ICC U19s World Cup Qualifiers, CDU Men’s Strike League and CDU Top End T20 Series fixtures played at the venue.

The support and backing of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the first ICC Full-Member Association to participate in Cricket 365, is a compelling endorsement. Pakistan is the 5th largest country in the world (240 million people) and a powerhouse of world cricket. The success of Cricket 365 has seen the event make a short list of new Australian Cricket Strategic Revenue and Investment (SRI) opportunities which we hope will position the event for further 15 growth and development.

Gavin Dovey (NT Cricket CEO) with Hon Kate Worden (NT Sports Minister) at the announcement of the installation of a drop-in wicket back into TIO Stadium on 6 June 2023

Census 2022/23 Cricket Australia recently released the 2022/23 Census figures, covering the period of 15 April 2022 to 15 April 2023. I want to acknowledge and congratulate our wonderful staff and the many volunteers throughout our game who have worked tirelessly to positively impact our participation figures and trends across the Territory. It has been particularly encouraging to see substantial growth in: Registered Kids 5-12 Year Olds (21/22) = 473 (22/23) = 746 (+58%) Junior Cricketers 12 & Younger (21/22) = 412 (22/23) = 658 (+60%) Junior Cricket All Ages (21/22) = 652 (22/23) = 1,130 (+73%) Women & Girls Registered (21/22) = 349 (22/23) = 645 (+85%) I’m confident that with dedicated and focused Participation and Growth Leads now in place in Darwin and Alice Springs, we will see further growth again over the course of the next 12 months. NT Cricket Staff I would like to make special mention of the incredible efforts of NT Cricket Staff over the course of the past year. Unlike many of our fellow S&T Associations who have staffing resources in excess of 50 to 200 people, we have a very small but incredibly dedicated group of people who wear ‘multiple hats’ and are stretched across a large amount of roles, functions and Territory. We are exceptionally lucky to have such good people who chose to work in cricket, and chose to do so for no other reason than they are driven to make a difference in a sport and community they are very passionate about.

Gavin Dovey (NT Cricket CEO) with CDU Men’s Strike League Player of the Final, Jack Wood, at TIO Stadium on 28 July 2023

Against the backdrop of significant leadership and organisational change this year, I commend their character, resilience, work ethic, and spirit, and I would like to acknowledge the significant contribution they have made to the sport and others in 2023. I would also like to recognise the contribution of departed staff Megan White (Pathways Manager), Michael Gill (Cricket and Schools Officer), Andrew Richards (Apprentice Curator), and Matthew Sandery made during their time at NT Cricket. In particular I would like to highlight the significant contribution of Matthew Sandery during his time as Head of Facilities, and congratulate him on taking another big step in his career by being appointed Head Curator at ICC Academy and Dubai International Cricket Stadium. I suspect it will not be long before Matthew is speaking before a Test Match at a major Australian venue.

society, a game with unrivalled reach and appeal, and a game that will play an increasingly important role in uniting and inspiring our diverse community. I would like to thank everyone. right across the Territory - our Associations, Committees, Clubs, Volunteers, Coaches, Players, Officials and Partners - who have at some point this year, and likely on more than one occasion, gone above and beyond in your generosity, time, passion and commitment to represent, serve and grow our great game.

Gavin Dovey Chief Executive Officer NT Cricket Ltd

Thank You Our achievements over the past year have demonstrated once again that cricket truly is a game for all, a game that occupies a special place within Australian

Community Cricket

“Cricket in the NT never stops and that’s how we like it” Darren Treumer, Head of Cricket & Pathways 17

Cricket Clinic in Borroloola, NT

Community Cricket, our Associations and grassroots Clubs, Coaches, Match Officials, Committees and Volunteers are the heartbeat of our cricket community, and we are continually endeavouring to better support and grow this critical part of the game. There is so much more to do in this vital area of the game, from improving our community infrastructure, to volunteer recruitment and recoginition, or club governance and inclusivity. We are committed to building the capability to drive improvement in all facets of community cricket however an immediate focus of our limited resources has very much been on driving an increase in participation, in particular in that key target market of 5-12 year olds. We have been heavily engaging primary schools throughout the Territory, positioning ourselves to make a big run at more Woolworths Cricket Blast participants in 2024 and ultimately driving those kids into registered club cricket.

Junior Participation While it was pleasing to see a small bounce back in Blast registrations over the past 12 months (+49%), we still have a lot of work to do. Blast registrations in the Territory are still down -82% from where we were in 2019/20 and pre-COVID, and this will be a key focus area for us in 2024. On a more positive note and as has been referenced earlier in the Annual Report, it has been fantastic to see Registered 512 year olds up 58%, Junior Cricket of all ages up 73% and Women & Girls up 85%.

Masters Indoor Championships Postponed twice due to COVID-19, the Masters Indoor Championships finally made their way to the Territory for the first time in 20 years. Palmerston Indoor Sports Centre did an outstanding job hosting the event, with 26 teams from across Australia enjoying a week in the Top End in May. Congratulations to Amanda Challen, Jo Posgate and the NT Women’s Over 30s who were great ambassadors for indoor cricket in the Territory.

Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund In 2022-23 NT Cricket, via the ACIF and Grassroots Cricket Fund (GCF), was able to make $120,000 in funding available to clubs, associations and schools for cricket infrastructure projects. We were delighted to approve 4 applications from: Alice Springs Cricket Association (Flynn Drive Lighting Project); Nightcliff Cricket Club (Turf wicket extension); Tracy Village Cricket Club (Shade Structure Project - #2 Oval); and the Darwin Districts Cricket Competition (2x synthetic pitches).

Victorious Darwin Desert Rose Team

DESERT ROSE After a 10-year hiatus, the Desert Rose Cup returned with a bang in September 2022 with Alice Springs claiming the 3-match competition against Darwin at DXC Arena.

MULTICUTURAL CUP Previously known as the ‘Asia Cup’, this year saw the tournament re-branded as the ‘Top End Multicultural Cup’ with aim of promoting unity through cricket.

Fastforward 12 months and the Desert Rose returned to Alice Springs in September 2023. Taking place at the beautiful Albrecht Oval, the series was again played with a mix of T20 and 40over fixtures. The series was played in great spirit with Darwin emerging victorious 2-1.

Organised by Udara Weerasinghe (Cricket Academy NT), 12 teams and 200 players participated in 32 fixtures across 4 weeks in Darwin. Players embraced the searing October heat and humidity to play some fantastic cricket. The event culminating in a close-fought Final between Kings XI Punjab and United. Kings XI Punjab claiming the inaugural title by 9 runs.

The attendance of former Australian cricketer Delissa Kimmince, as part of the Australian Cricketers’ Association’s Game Development Program, was a highlight for many players as she shared her knowledge of the game.

Congratulations to all players and everyone involved for a wonderful celebration of diverse cultures and a shared passion for cricket,

Since the COVID-19 Pandemic, cricket in Tennant Creek has become disconnected. NT Cricket has begun discussions with the NT Government, Sport and Recreation and Council to create a road map back for the sport in the cattle and mining town. A key part of this is a $9m commitment by the NT Government which will see Purkiss Reserve receive substantial upgrades including a 3-lane cricket net facility. The project is due for completion in December 2023.

Pathways 25

2022/23 Under 17 National Championships NT team The NT Cricket Strategy (2022-27) has a core pillar of ‘Strong Cricket Pathways and Teams‘ who play to win, compete with integrity and make Territorians proud. This year can be largely considered a transition year on that journey as we welcomed a new CEO with his own experience and vision and we said goodbye to our passionate Pathways Manager, Megan White. Despite the organisational change I‘m proud to say there were a number of success stories, punctuated by the selection of Tom Menzies in the Australian U19 Team for a Tour of the United Kingdom, and fielding an U12s NT Girls side in a National Championships for the first time ever. I would like to thank our male and female players and coaches for their time, effort, hard work and commitment to improvement this year, as well as our wonderful clubs, committees and the many volunteers who supported the development of our next generation of talented cricketers.

SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA (SSA) UNDER 12 CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS The SSA Cricket Championships brings together the top Under 12 school teams from across the country to compete in a week-long tournament. The Championships provide an opportunity for young players to showcase their developing skills and represent their schools and states on a national level. This year was particularly exciting for the Territory. We not only hosted the tournament in Darwin, but it was the first time that the Territory fielded an Under 12 Girls team in the competition which is a great sign for the future of women’s cricket in the Territory. I’m also pleased to report that the Under 12 Boys team finished in equal 3rd place with WA! Congratulations to all our aspiring cricketers and to all the coaches and parents who helped created a positive, encouraging and enjoyable experience for the players and teams. CRICKET 365 - JUNIOR STRIKE LEAGUE Junior Strike League is fast becoming one of the premier winter cricket underage tournaments across Australia. The events provide our best young NT players with further higher competition development opportunities and the chance to test their current skills against good young players from across the country and overseas.

The 2023 Junior Women’s Strike League (U19 T20 and One Day Tournament) saw the NT and ACT combine to create a ‘Territories Team’ and compete against Papua New Guinea’s Under 19 side and a Victorian team. The 2023 Junior Boys Strike League was the largest iteration to date. A total of eight teams, including two Northern Territory teams, played a round robin competition with Caulfield Grammar being crowned the 2023 winners. Also making the trip to the Top End was an ACT Representative team, Upskill Cricket, Cricket for All, Richmond, and Victorian Big Cats from Gippsland. CHALLENGE SERIES 2023 was the third year of the Challenge Series concept which is designed to provide Darwin cricketers with the opportunity to play against quality Interstate opposition ahead of the annual Under 17 National Championships. This year we played Scotch College (Adelaide) in 6 highly competitive matches in Darwin. The sporting relationship developed between Scotch College and NT Cricket has proven immensely valuable for both teams. The Challenge Series has proven to be highly valued preparation for our U17s and U19s players, and we look forward to growing the concept in future years.

TOM MENZIES

TABITHA SAVILLE

In July, Tom Menzies joined an elite list of Territorian cricketers selected in an Australia U19s Squad following in the footsteps of the likes of Tom Andrews, Kane Richardson, Ken Skewes and Ken Vowles.

In May, the Tasmania Tigers announced they had signed Alice Springs very own Tabitha Saville to their contract list for the 2022-23 Season.

Tom was the youngest player selected for the 2023 Australian U19 Tour of the United Kingdom, after impressing national selectors and Australian U19 Head Coach Anthony Clark with his performances at National Championship level in Adelaide and Hobart.

This was followed up in October when the Hobart Hurricanes added Saville to their list for the W/BBL | 09 campaign, capping a fantastic return to elite professional women’s cricket for the 25-year-old who had stepped away from the game for a brief period.

Tom performed strongly on the UK Tour, helping Australia win the Youth ODI Series 3-1 and the Youth Test Series 1-0. Tom represented himself, his family and the Darwin Cricket Club well and made the wider Northern Territory very proud.

“Tom has some serious skills with the ball, particularly for white ball cricket. He has a dangerous yorker and good back of hand slower ball ... his spell in the Strike League Final changed the game!”

Saville eventually went on to make her State debut in 2017-18 for the South Australian Redbacks, later becoming the recipient of the 13th Karen Rolton Medal awarded to the best player in the South Australian Statewide Super First Grade competition.

INDIGENOUS CRICKET

The Northern Territory has a rich history of Indigenous cricket with Indigenous Territorians such as Ken Vowles and D’Arcy Short representing Australia on an International stage. In recent years engagement and representation has stagnated due to an inability to invest sufficient resources, however this will be a strategic priority and a focus point over the course of the next 12 months. We are driven to make the game more accessible to our Indigenous communities, make a positive and lasting social impact, and to inspire a new generation of Indigenous kids to love the game. The Imparja Cup was again the highlight of the Indigenous Cricket calendar with 18 teams coming together in Alice Springs to celebrate cricket, community and culture in the 30th year of the event.

The return of the National Indigenous Cricket Championships (NICC) to Alice Springs for the first time since 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic allowed State and Territory representative teams to showcase their skills in the spiritual home of Indigenous cricket. The Northern Territory combined with South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT to field a men’s and women’s team.

We made a concerted effort this year to invest more time, planning and resources in an effort to revive our incredible remote cricket carnivals. The Dingo Cup (Timber Creek), Barra Cup (Borroloola), Nitmiluk Cup (Katherine) and Rossy Williams Shield (Tennant Creek) are an awesome part of cricket’s story in the Territory. These events and incredible remote locations provide a great opportunity to showcase our indigenous communities love of the game.

match officials association

The Northern Territory Cricket Match Officials Association (NTCMOA) entered its second year in 2023. We are driven to increase the number of umpires and scorers throughout the Territory, and develop and support those individuals that wish to progress through the pathway and officiate at the higher levels of the game. The officiating group have worked hard this year to gain an understanding of the needs of the cricketing community, and as a result have implemented numerous umpire and scorer education opportunities throughout Darwin and Alice Springs. We were also thrilled to welcome a number of ICC and CA elite and National Panel umpires to the Territory this year, providing the opportunity for our local umpires to observe, stand with and learn from the best in the game. Thank you to Paul ‘Blocker’ Wilson and Donovan Koch who officiated in the CDU Men’s Strike League, and to Shaun Craig and Peter George who officiated in the CDU Men’s Top End T20 Series.

FACILITIES

“We delivered 287 games of cricket in a 183-day dry season” 35

Matt Sandery, Head of Facilities

The 2022/23 Cricket Season was a hallmark year for the NTC Facilities Team who under the guidance of Matthew Sandery (Head of Facilities) delivered an unprecedented volume of cricket content and several major turf and infrastructure projects in Darwin and Alice Springs. From the installation of a drop-in pitch in TIO Stadium for the first time in over a decade, or the hosting of international teams and events; to taking over the curating of turf wickets in Alice Springs or providing accelerated development opportunities for interstate secondees, to mentoring club curators or supporting our growing local competitions, it really was a year of ambition and achievement. These accomplishments not only enriched the cricketing landscape in the Northern Territory but repositioned the region as a genuine option for further international content in the years to come.

ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifiers We successfully hosted the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifiers in June. New Zealand successfully winning the event and claiming the final place in the 2024 U19 World Cup in Sri Lanka. The Facilities Team worked tirelessly to ensure DXC Arena, Cazaly’s Arena and TIO Stadium provided high quality first-class venues for the 7 International teams playing 21 fixtures across 10 days,

Inter-State Secondments It was wonderful to partner with Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) and Adelaide Oval (AO) to provide accelerated learning and development opportunities to two aspiring curators. Nick Lindley (MCG) and Caleb Hearne (AO) were based at DXC Arena for 4 months and 1 month respectively, gaining valuable experience in turf management in different conditions, while also making a significant contribution to the delivery of the game here in the Territory from April- August.

Cricket Indonesia NT Cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket Indonesia collaborated to establish Indonesia's first turf wicket facility. It was a great opportunity for NT Cricket to support and assist a neighbouring Associate Member in their efforts to grow and develop the game. The initiative involved careful site selection, considering factors like soil quality and climate. The hope is Bali's new cricket ground will soon be ready to host World Cup Qualifiers in the East Asia Pacific region in the near future.

Drop in wicket being lifted into TIO Stadium on 6 June 2023 37

Drop-In Wicket Project The re-installation of a drop-in wicket back into TIO Stadium for the first time in 15 years was a significant and complex project that required careful skill and collaboration from multiple stakeholders. We were very fortunate to receive incredible funding and support from the Northern Territory Government (NTG) to make the project possible, and to be able to call on the expertise of arguably Australia’s #1 curator in Damian Hough (Adelaide Oval) who travelled to Darwin to oversee the installation. The project rekindled tradition, with the sight and experience of cricket once again being played at TIO Stadium a wonderful addition to a huge year of cricket in the Territory. The wicket held up remarkably well considering it was subject to vandalism shortly after installation, had a bare minimum settling in period prior to the first fixture, and had 13 matches played on it over the course of 6 weeks. We have begun discussions with the NTG regarding building and installing 2 drop-in wickets in 2024 as we continue to build confidence with Cricket Australia that our key sporting infrastructure is ready and capable of hosting international cricket on a consistent basis moving forward. It is wonderful to see AFL and NRL fixtures played at TIO Stadium each year. We hope in the future that elite cricket will also be part of that annual calendar of events at the venue.

2023 CDU Top End T20 Series Winners - NT Strike

The 3rd edition of Cricket 365 smashed all key on-field and offfield key metrics and success measures. The CDU Men’s Strike League and CDU Men’s Top End T20 Series, both powered by Dafabet, again demonstrated Australia’s unique competitive advantage as the only international cricket nation with the ability to play cricket 365 days a year in our own backyard. The CDU Top End T20 Series attracted record interest from teams, with the Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades and Papua New Guinea all returning, while the ACT and Pakistan Shaheens participated for the first time. The event enjoyed record levels of Government and Commercial support, and the broadcast figures exceeded all expectations. The already first-class venues and facilities were further enhanced by the addition of TIO Stadium. On-Field the Top End T20 Series provided players like Jack Wood the chance to showcase his skills (he has since been signed by Brisbane Heat) and local players like Michael Kudra, Matt Hamond, Hamish Martin, Harsh Brimbal, Coby Edmonstone and Tom Menzies the chance to play at a higher level here in the Territory.

We smashed Broadcast numbers! The Top End T20 Series attracted significant interest from Australian and overseas broadcasters. We were delighted to sell the rights in India, Pakistan, USA, Canada, New Zealand and the Pacific. The Top End T20 Series attracted a unique audience of over 600,000 people with 90% of that audience coming from India and Pakistan, demonstrating the enormous potential of the event and its global reach and appeal.

16.5 Million total viewers

We welcomed a cricket powerhouse! The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) saw great value in sending their ‘A’ Team, the Pakistan Shaheens, to Darwin to participate in the event and get further experience and exposure to different conditions and opposition. Pakistan is the first ICC Full-Member Association to play in the Top End T20 Series, providing NT Cricket an incredible opportunity to promote ourselves to a cricket loving country of 240 million people.

We won the title undefeated! The NT Strike Team shocked all by claiming the Top End T20 Series undefeated. Winning their 5 pool games before beating Pakistan Shaheens by 46 runs in the Final. The event was the highest standard of cricket played in the Territory all year, and proved a great opportunity for local NT players and coaches to test themselves against elite first class Australian and international opposition.
