Towns get in forest biz Gazette staff North Island communities have collaborated to establish a new community forest on three separate tracts of land in the Alice Lake, Marble River and Quatse River Areas. The area includes secondgrowth hemlock and Douglas fir, and old-growth cedar, including many stands regenerated after a hurricane in 1908, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson recently announced. “North Vancouver Island has abundant forests, and it’s great to see the three Ports working together on a community forest that will support North Island families,” he said. The North Island community forest has an allowable annual cut of 10,400 cubic metres and covers 2,400 hectares and is just one of more than 50 B.C. community

forests that are operating or are in the planning stages. But Community Forest Director Gordon Glover said the local project wouldn’t have been realized without the collaboration between al local governments, community organizations and the province. “This agreement will help provide direct benefits to the local communities while allowing for local management of our forests,” he said. Community forest agreements are a form of legal tenure that enable communities to more fully participate in the stewardship of local Crown forest resources. Community forests are areabased and give communities exclusive rights to harvest timber, as well as the opportunity to manage and profit from other forest resources such as botanical products, recreation, wildlife, water and scenic viewscapes.

National surveys headed for homes Gazette staff Nearly five million Canadians are being asked to participate in the National Household Survey. The information collected is vital to communities for planning services, such as child care, schooling, family services, housing, roads and public transportation and skills training for employment. Households can fill in the easy and secure NHS questionnaire online by using their secure access code, or they can complete a paper questionnaire. Yellow packages, containing

a questionnaire, information on how to complete the NHS and the secure access code are being delivered to each of the 4.5 million selected households. Respondents who need more information can call the Help Line at 1-877-308-2777. TTY users may call 1-866-753-7083. Statistics Canada strongly encourages selected households to complete the NHS so communities will have the information they need to make decisions. Killer dog attack prompts new bylaw J.R. Rardon Gazette staff PORT McNEILL — A new animal-control bylaw, spurred by a recent dog-on-dog attack that left a local woman’s pet dead, passed first and second reading during council’s regular meeting. But the bylaw also drew some criticism and will face additional scrutiny before it can be approved. “If this bylaw was in place for me, that would be a life-changer,” said Shilo Desrosiers, whose Rottweilers, Diesel and Jade, escaped their enclosure and attacked and killed a Yorkshire Terrier belonging to Teena Slater in early May. “I would probably leave Port McNeill,” she said. “Right now, it’s like a victim’s bylaw.” In particular, Desrosiers took issue with an amendment to

the current bylaw which would prohibit keeping within town limits “any dog which has killed or injured a person or domestic animal.” Speaking during public comment period at the end of the June 6 meeting, Desrosiers said the bylaw should allow for circumstances of each case to be taken into consideration. She said her dogs have always been kept in a closed run on her property when outside, and other, unaccompanied dogs have regularly entered her property to run alongside the enclosure and bark and provoke her animals. Desrosiers said she’s still unsure how her dogs escaped during the incident in May. But whatever the reason, the dog owner insists her pets were provoked into the attack. “When my dogs got loose, they chased the

other dog out of the yard,” she said. “It’s horrible for her and it’s horrible for me. It’s horrible, because she’s my neighbour.” Coucillors commiserated with Desrosiers on some parts of the bylaw, and have already identified clauses that will or may need to be altered, including the definition of dangerous animals. Coun. Gaby Wickstrom also pointed out apparent contradictions contained in different clauses of the bylaw, which would replace the existing animal-control bylaw. An amended version of the new bylaw is expected to be presented for third reading at council’s next meeting, Monday.

Families, fishing and fun The Family Fishing Society of BC and the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC are inviting everyone to come out rain or shine to enjoy a day of angling this weekend with free fishing licenses as part of a plan to get more British Columbians hooked on fishing. BC’s Family Fishing Weekend is a great opportunity to attend an organized community event, or create your own family fishing adventure at one of the province’s thousands of lakes with a free three-day licence, compliments of the province. Free licences This year, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is also offering free saltwater fishing licenses. Events will be held on Vancouver Island at the Government Pier in Port Hardy, Discovery Pier in Campbell River, Fuller Lake in Chemanius, the Courtenay Fish and Game Club, Mayo Lake in Duncan, Star Lake in Gold River, O’Conner Lake and Village Bay Lake on Quadra Island, as well as Shawnigan Lake and the Malahat Outdoor Sports Centre north of Victoria. Organizers say Family Fishing Weekend has introduced thousands of people to the sport and this weekend is a perfect time to become a “Fishing Buddy and pledge to introduce at least one friend to fishing. Both the Family Fishing Weekend and the Fishing Buddies Program share the goal

of encouraging British Columbians to enjoy B.C.’s world class sport fishing opportunities. “For many B.C. families, Family Fishing Weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, said Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson. “A free weekend of fishing is a great way to encourage families to get out and enjoy sport fishing in lakes and rivers across British Columbia. Added Owen Bird, executive director of the Family Fishing Society of BC: “These events offer a great opportunity to learn how to fish and provide lots of useful educational information in a fun and supervised environment. “The hundreds of volunteers who organize and participate in these events are passionate about fishing and even more passionate about passing on their love of the sport — they really are the heart of Family Fishing Weekend. Family Fishing Weekend is also a great opportunity to take advantage of the warm weather and combine fishing adventures with a weekend of camping. There are many easily accessible, public and private campsites in close proximity to fishing destinations on Vancouver Island and more information on camping destinations can be found at www. gofishbc.com.

Calling on all Pablo Petcassos, your art can help B.C. animals With the deadline less than three weeks away, the BC SPCA urges all artists to get their creative juices fired up to help animals across the province. Young artists — up to 13-years-old — have until midnight June 26 to submit original artwork for the 2011 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause Kid’s T-shirt contest. The winner’s artwork will be featured on the front of all 10,000-plus Paws for a Cause participant T-shirts. “Everyone who participates in Paws for a Cause all across the province will be wearing these T-shirts,” said Denise Meade, the BC SPCA’s director of development.

“Alone, that’s pretty special, but the winning young artist of this contest will also be helping homeless and abandoned animals.” Contestants are invited to submit their original artwork online, then customize a fundraising page with details about why their artwork should win. The artist will then be guided through a stepby-step process emailing friends and family members and asking them to vote for their masterpiece. One dollar will equal one vote. The artist who collects the most online donations will be declared the winner on June 27. This contest is open to all youth in B.C. 13 and

New guy on the block Please allow me to introduce myself — my name is Mike D’Amour and I’m the new editor here at the North Island Gazette. I’m a native British Columbian, but left at the age of 15 when my career navy dad was posted to serve the mighty Manitoba fleet in Winnipeg. I’ve worked as a line welder, a house framer and as a cook on the DEW Line in Canada’s high-artic, to name a few, before becoming a reporter in the late 80s. Since then I’ve worked at several daily papers, mostly as an investigative crime reporter. I’ve covered events including exposing an international sex slave ring and the Mayerthorpe, Alberta madman who killed four young Mounties. I spent time with Winston Blackmore, the selfproclaimed Bishop of Bountiful B.C. and broke a story about a nine-year-old crack dealer. After spending a few years at another Black Press weekly, I started my own in small town Alberta. Let’s just say as a businessman, it turned out I’m a pretty good journalist. I’m more than pleased to be here and am looking forward to help provide news you can use, interesting stories about our people and places and all the great photos and features you’ve come to expect from your North Island Gazette.

Community forests is a cooperation between municipal governments and the province. More agreements like that would be nice.

MLA John Duncan has yet to return calls from this paper asking why he closed his North Island office. We are waiting, sir.

Tax my car, not my income VICTORIA – The first car I ever bought was a private sale. A young man showed off the old car he had painted himself, while his mother smiled and offered homemade lemonade. Sold for $600. The choice of drink proved appropriate when the engine clattered to a final halt a week later. I discovered that the crankcase contained mostly STP Oil Treatment, to conceal the engine’s true state. At the dealership this spring, the harmonized sales tax was not a hot topic. Like most goods, new and used vehicles were subject to 12 per cent PST and GST before, and they are subject to 12 per cent HST now. When I mentioned this in a news report last week, an astute reader in Nanaimo reminded me that it’s not quite that simple. Vehicles, boats and aircraft sold by private individuals are exempt from GST.

This was one of the populist concessions the Mulroney government made in an effort to placate angry voters 20 years ago. In B.C., prior to July 2010, private sales were subject to seven-per-cent PST only. During the hubbub over the implementation of the HST in its 2010 budget, the B.C. Liberal government also increased tax on private vehicle sales by five per cent, from seven to 12 per cent. The stated reason

zoning rules and hog services for personal benefit. And if you think they pay income or other taxes on their home businesses, I have a 1973 Pinto you might want to test-drive. The subject of used cars came up last week when NDP leader Adrian Dix belatedly launched his own anti-HST tour. Dix’s first media event was staged in a Burnaby kitchen. The homeowner dismissed the $350 HST rebate he has been offered to offset costs such as summer camp for his two kids, saying that will be gone several times over if he buys a used car. was to provide “comparable treatment” for private and commercial sales of used vehicles. This provoked an exchange of partisan accusations that typically passes for debate in the B.C. legislature. It’s a payoff to car dealers, the NDP screamed. You guys opposed all our income tax cuts and now you’re pretending to support lower taxes, the B.C. Liberals yelled back. Out in the real world, one can observe the effect of a structure that gives advantage to private sellers. They use their garage, driveway and street to repair and market an endless series of used cars. Whether they’re crooks or not, their efforts are every bit as appealing to the neighbourhood as the guy with multiple illegal suites whose tenants plug up the parking for the whole block. Food bank volunteers taken for granted Dear Editor, I’m just writing this because I am getting quite irked with people’s attitudes about the food bank. We are all volunteers there that put time in to make money for the food bank. People have the misconception that Overwaitea supplies us with all the food we hand out on Fridays (except the last Friday of the month). This is not the fact! We pay a fee to the Mustard Seed Foundation — they phone and say when to come down to get

food, then we have to buy foods that are not donated by Overwaitea, SuperValu and IGA. Some days are really great when Pastor Randy shows up with a truck full of fresh fruit and veggies, but this is not always the case! We have to make money in the store to buy the food not donated. It consists of a lot more then people believe! We are not there to make money for ourselves; every penny we make goes to paying for the building, hydro, lights, etc. Then we try to make sure

"We do all we can to help, but don't appreciate the abuse when we do not have the stock."

that we have enough food for hampers. People seem to think that it is their God-given right to get food from us. We work to make sure there is food for them, and it really bothers me, as a volunteer three days a week, that people can still be rude and try to

demand that we give them what they want. Our manager, Cheryl, tries, but it isn’t always feasible. We do all we can to help, but don’t appreciate the abuse when we do not have the stock! Things can be bad enough in the store that people come in and change

their clothes, then leave their dirty stuff behind, or a DVD finds its way out of its case and disappears. We deal with this stuff daily and don’t appreciate unappreciative people hollering at us or anyone connected to us. We do all we can, and do give a lot away when someone needs it. Our belief is that we do everything we can to help people in need. We always stress ourselves when it is time to hand out hampers, hoping there is enough. So we really appreciate everyone that donates to

the store, whether food, clothes, furniture, etc. It makes our goal of making sure no one goes hungry that much closer! Thank you! I just had to state some of the facts because I personally am tired of people coming in and wanting things for next to free — we need to make money to feed people; we’re not lining our pockets. Once again, thanks to all who do support us and who we help. Louise Pryce-Reay Port Hardy

B.C. can lead way in clean energy Grad car Dear Editor, Considering the reassessment of nuclear energy that has taken place globally following the Fukushima disaster in Japan, it comes as little surprise that Germany has announced plans to shut down all 17 of its nuclear reactors by 2022. In fact, Germany temporarily shut down 7 of its oldest reactors in March immediately after the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan. Fortunately for people of Germany, their country is a recognized leader in clean energy with a substantial amount of installed solar and wind energy, and more on the way. Germany is well-positioned to eliminate nuclear power while also reducing its dependence on coal power. Other countries, of course, are not as fortunate, and many of them are literally scrambling to find cleaner sources of energy. For some, nuclear power may even be the only viable clean ener-

gy source available to replace coal. Looking at the difficult energy choices faced by so many other countries, it makes one realize how fortunate we are here in B.C. to have such an incredible wealth of renewable clean energy resources. Roughly 93 percent of the electricity generated in this province comes from clean hydroelectric sources. And thanks to a growing number of wind energy projects, clean B.C. wind energy is now contributing to our electricity grid as well. In fact, as

a research report released by our group (B.C. Citizens for Green Energy) in March 2010 found, B.C.’s untapped potential for generating clean, renewable electricity could easily be equal to the current generating capacity of BC Hydro‘s existing hydroelectric dams, and potentially two to three times as much or more. Clearly, with that much untapped clean energy potential, B.C. is not going to have to face any difficult nuclear energy questions any time soon. However, it also means we

have the potential to export a considerable amount of clean energy to nearby jurisdictions which need it; for example, provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan and states like California. Exporting clean energy from our untapped abundance would generate substantial revenue for the people of B.C. through fees, licences and taxes, and we therefore invite everyone to consider the environmental and economic possibilities inherent in becoming a major clean energy exporter. For those who are interested, copies of our March 2010 research report, entitled “A Triple Legacy for Future Generations: British Columbia’s Potential as a Renewable Green Energy Powerhouse,” are available on our website at www. greenenergybc.ca. Bruce Sanderson, B.C. Citizens for Green Energy

Natural gas not needed for electricity Dear Editor: I am one of many Fraser Valley residents who was very grateful when the provincial government took steps to permanently shut down the natural gas-fired Burrard Thermal generating plant in Port Moody. Burning non-renewable fossil fuels in a confined airspace like the Lower Mainland is not

good for anyone’s lungs let alone for our children’s lungs or for those of people who suffer from asthma. But now that a new technology has been developed that can extract natural gas locked in massive shale rock deposits (providing an abundant new supply of relatively cheap natural gas), I fear natural gas-

Letters to the editor

fired power plants similar to Burrard Thermal and Sumas II could resurface in this province and reverse the progress we’ve made in cleaning up our air. I would therefore like our elected officials to recommit to clean energy development, because burning natural gas to generate electricity is simply not necessary when we have

so many alternative energy resources in this province that can do the job better and do it cleanly and renewably. Staying on the clean energy path is something our children and grandchildren will thank us for someday. Marney Hogan Langley

was under control Dear editor; As the driver of the car mentioned in the letter of complaint in the June 8 North Island Gazette (Driver puts nice car in harm’s way), I would like to clarify a few matters. First of all, I’d like to apologized for any discomfort that the letter-writer suffered. However, I’d like to share my own views about what happened, as I believe there are some misconceptions about the matter. To begin with, there is no stop sign at the turnout by The Bargain Shop, as he stated. Secondly, I did slow down (as he indicated) and I was fully aware of the driver in the truck (Mr. Gibson). However, I believe, and so does my passenger, that I had plenty of room and time to navigate the turn, and she was not upset. We did not see Mr. Gibson brake hard, nor did we hear any screeching of tires from his vehicle. Two other people driving ahead of me saw his truck also, and believe it was reasonably far enough away for me to turn. I would also like to make it clear that I was laughing, not at him, but because it was my graduation day and I was in a great mood, as any grad would be. I had, indeed, borrowed a friend’s car and I was very aware I had to be careful with it. I hope he has not suffered any discomfort because of Mr. Gibson’s letter. I have written this letter so that the situation would be made clear from my point of view. Cody Hamilton Sointula

The goal is to publish every letter, so keep them brief, clear and to the point. Be hard on the problem, not the person; skip quotes except where readily confirmable; accept editing for length and legality. Include full name and home community (plus phone number to confirm authorship). Mail, fax, email or drop off c/o the editor by 4:00 pm Friday.

Anderson belts Rumblefest J.R. Rardon Gazette staff PORT ALICE — Brent Anderson can have his belt and wear it, too. Anderson, a Comox Valley mountain-bike racer, constructed a boxing-style champion’s belt for the winner of the annual Vancouver Island Mountain Bike Association downhill series points champion. On Sunday, he blitzed the field of advanced riders by eight seconds at the annual Rumblefest Rumble Tumble Downhill to clinch his fourth straight championship. “I’ve been coming here for eight years, and this was the fastest course yet,” said Anderson, one of dozens of riders who came from as far away as the Lower Mainland for the final in the Island points series. “There’s talk this was a record for the downhill.” Anderson posted rides of 3 minutes, 57 seconds and 3:59 in two runs down the steep, root- and rockstudded course. They were the only two sub4:00 runs of the day on the expert course. Jeff Beeston followed with a best ride of 4:05 and Mitchell Thacker was one second back in third, in 4:06. Anderson accepted his Rumblefest trophy — featuring a used bike part mounted on a slab of wood — and proclaimed it was the

the “buckle”. Tucked inside the sprocket is a golden cyclist — oriented downhill, of course — from a cheap, prefabricated trophy he dismantled for parts.

Anderson said the quality of the Rumble Tumble race course and the volunteers who put on the event will keep him coming back in the future.

“Every year, I bring another recruit or two,” he said with a laugh. “You can easily say this is one of the best courses in B.C. It encompasses all the

best things in a downhill course, and so do the volunteers. The salmon barbecue, the shuttle drivers, it’s just an excellent weekend.” Marine Harvest donated salmon for the annual Saturday barbecue following that day’s cross-country race. In Sunday’s downhill, Danice Uyesugi won the women’s advance title uncontested, in 4:54. In the intermediate division, Richard Abernetay and James Herriot shared the men’s title with matching 2:52 clockings. Emily Tay was the top women’s finisher with a second run of 3:50 that shaved more than a half-minute off her first run (4:22). The beginner class produced another tie among the men, with Mark Bickford and Riley Varkonja posting identical 2:31 times. Janine Lansdowne took the women’s trophy with a 6:03 time. In the cross-country event Saturday, which encompasses the lower portion of the downhill, Craig Gillett won the men’s advanced, Nathan Krein won the men’s beginner, Fraser Ullstrom won the men’s intermediate. Doug Goodman won the senior race, Isabella Hlavon of Port Alice won the women’s beginner race and Elizabeth Fraser won the women’s intermediate race.

With traces of pharmaceuticals being detected in our environment (soil and water), the disposing of unused medication must be seriously considered. Flushing down the toilet is not the way to do it nor is throwing medication into the garbage. Talk to your pharmacist for the most environmentally friendly way to do this. Vaccines have benefited the citizens of the world immensely. Diphtheria has been cut by 100%, mumps by 96%, tetanus by 93%, whooping cough by 92%, hepatitis A by 87%, chickenpox by 85% and acute hepatitis B by 80%. Vaccines have proven their worth and continue to do so. Just a quick reminder about the term “SPF” on sunscreen labels. If you have the type of skin that burns in 10 minutes in the sun with no protection, then applying a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 means that you’ll be protected 15 times longer (150 minutes). An SPF of 30 gives protection 30 times as long. There is not much more advantage using sunscreens with SPF of 50 or more. While we are on the subject of sun, some medications can cause a photosensitivity reaction when we are out in the sun. Our pharmacists are familiar with these interactions and will bring it to your attention with an auxiliary label and in-store counselling if it could affect you. Good communication between our pharmacists and our customers is a cornerstone of our service. Medications can be confusing and it’s our job to make it clear.

In loving memory of Dustin D.W. Engel Aug. 23, 1984 - June 20, 2004 The moment you were taken away our hearts had split in two. The one side ďŹ lled with memories the other died with you. We think of you in silence, we often speak your name. We feel again the bitter blow that never should have came. Each morning when we awake, we know that you are gone. No one knows the heartache as we try to carry on. Our hearts still ache in sadness, secret tears still ow. What it’s meant to lose you no one will ever know. Our thoughts are always with you, your place no one can ďŹ ll. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. They say time heals everything but we know this isn’t so because it hurts as much today as it did seven years ago. Loving you forever and always... We miss you so much. Your Dad, Dustin P., Danielle & Dara.

A small pleasure craft departs Beaver Cove as participants in the Telus Van Isle 360 International sailboat race queue for the start J.R.Rardon photo of Leg 6 last week.

Van Isle 360 visits Gazette staff A lack of wind and unexpected marine traffic slowed but could not keep competitors in the Telus Van Isle 360 International boat race from their bi-annual visits to North Island

communities. Leg 6 from Telegraph Cove to Port Hardy was abandonded due to lack of wind. Several boats took more than an hour just to cross the starting line in Beaver Cove.

On Friday, the Leg 7 start in Port Hardy Bay was delayed for 10 minutes when a tug and log boom entered the bay across the path. On Friday night, the crews disembarked at Winter Harbour.

Rare glimpse of stealthy killers seen off our shores Two more unique whale events have been documented in the ocean corridor between Port McNeill, Sointula and Alert Bay. Following the remarkable visit of offshore killer whales* at the end of March, what is likely the largest group of marine mammal-eating killer whales ** ever documented swam past our communities May 16. It’s possible there were

up to 37 different animals in this group. These hunters of marine mammal prey need to have a culture of stealth and unpredictability and therefore usually travel in small groups. The work of the Orca Lab (http://www. orcalab.org) aided in documenting this extraordinary encounter. Then, this last week, we had frequent sightings of a little grey whale in front of our communities.

Grey whales are already a rarity in our specific area but what makes this whale really unique is it’s potentially the first grey whale known to become a summer resident here. Jared Towers and Christie McMillan, of the Marine Marine Education and Research Detective Society, confirmed it’s the with Jackie same grey whale they kept Hildering an eye on last year. From June to early October Island and the east end 2010, the whale was more of Malcolm Island and often around Cormorant became known as Dusty

If we are so lucky that Dusty is able to make a living by feeding here, we’ll be able to whale watch from land with some predictability. We’ll also need to be good marine neighbours, since Dusty has been sighted very near the harbours of our communities and can surface unexpectedly. * Most often near the continental shelf and their diet includes sharks. ** Known as transients

and Bigg’s killer whales. Research found these to be the most genetically divergent type of killer whale and may be recognized as a different species. Jackie Hildering is a biologist, avid scuba diver, and marine educator who lives in Port McNeill.www.themarinedetective.ca. For more information and pictures of Dusty, see www.mersociety.org.

and Little Grey Whale. Dusty is relatively easy to identify as an individual because its tail bears the evidence of having survived an attack by killer whales. Christie and Jared confirmed May 31 that Dusty returned to the area and was indeed the whale many of us in Port McNeill, Sointula and Alert Bay had the great privilege of seeing while it fed near our shores.

Versatile South Asian condiment a tasty mix There are several different types of chutney, a versatile condiment which is used in many cultures. I’ve always enjoyed the sweet, sour and salty aspect of chutney — some are mustard based, some are fruit based and others are tomato based. The following recipe is fruit-based and I serve it with pork roast, but it would also be lovely with chicken or in a sandwich. Apple Raisin Chutney 2 medium apples, cored and diced small 1 medium sweet onion, diced small 1 cup Sultana raisins ¼ tsp fresh minced ginger

Appetite’s Delight with Kellie Dukes 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar ½ cup balsamic vinegar ¼ tsp minced garlic 1 cup water Combine all ingredients in a small pot. Heat over high heat —

stirring to ensure the sugar has melted completely —and bring to a boil. Turn element down to medium high heat and simmer for 35 to 40 minutes. Stir chutney occasionally and scrape down the sides of the pot so the small pieces that stick to the sides won’t burn and will get a chance to break down. Take out half of the chutney and place in a blender and puree until smooth. Place pureed mixture back into the pot with the chutney and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, or longer or until the chutney is nice and thick. Kellie is a chef who lives in Port Hardy.
