Teresa Bird Gazette staff Eulachon, an oily smelt-like fish prized by First Nations, has been designated an endangered species after a 98 per cent decline in its numbers over the past decade. The listing was made by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), which warns the outlook is “grim” for the small iconic fish that may be nearing extinction. Coastal First Nations render eulachon down into a grease that was carried vast distances along historic “grease trails” – pre-contact trade routes that connected coastal and inland villages. The grease is still produced and traded today by some Kwakwaka’wakw people. “There are a number of families that still make grease,” said Verna Ambers, assistant administrator for the ‘Namgis Band. “The Beans family has been going up to Knight Inlet for 70 years. They go up and stay for a month.” Ambers said the families have reported very low returns of the fish in recent years, causing concern for many. “It has been really hard for people in the last few years. They could hardly get any,” said Ambers. “But this year there was a huge run. They made about 300 gallons of grease.” The First Nations people use the pungent oil for dipping other foods such as potatoes or bread. Because harvesting the fish, rendering them and collecting and bottling the oil is so labour intensive, eulachon oil is often referred to as gold. Alert Bay resident Barb Cranmer has even produced a film about the sought-after grease called Rendering of Wealth. COSEWIC cites a mix of culprits for the decade of dropping numbers in eulachon stocks, including changing environmental conditions, predators and fishing. COSEWIC’s decision will go to the federal environment minister, who will consider whether to also designate eulachon under Canada’s Species at Risk Act (SARA). Crey said a listing under SARA would force the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to take a hard look at fisheries that threaten eulachon, as well as sources of habitat damage, and potentially force corrective action. With files from Jeff Nagel.

Emergency drill tests local responders responders were graded by evaluators wielding clipboards and a videocamera. The exercise will be fully evaluated in the coming weeks, said Chuck Lok, the North Island’s Emergency Program Coordinator. “Overall, it was
my observation that it was very efficient and everything flowed together well,” Lok said. “There are always issues with communications when you’ve got people from different departments using radios set on different
frequencies, and that’s something we’re going to have to take a look at. “It’s one of these advantages of living in a small community; we work well together. Overall, the whole thing progressed very well and smoothly.”

J.R. Rardon Gazette staff The North Island’s emergency services providers were put to the test Sunday with a mock disaster that brought in resources from Port Alice, Port Hardy and Port McNeill and utilized hospital staff in both Port Hardy and Port McNeill. The emergency response exercise started with the “crash” of a school bus carrying 24 students, played by members of Port McNeill’s Junior Rangers program. The decommissioned bus was placed on its side on the road behind the old Keogh Generating Station, between Firefighters treat “victims” of Sunday’s mock bus rollover as part located Port McNeill and of an emergency response exercise near Highway 19. They were then taken for further treatment to both Port Hardy and Port McNeill hospitals. The actions of all

Conservative leader addresses issues Teresa Bird Gazette staff John Cummins, soon-to-be leader of the resurrected BC Conservative Party, visited the North Island last week as part of a province-wide tour. The provincial Conservative party was the first political party in B.C., but fell into obscurity during the last four decades, registering only about 200 members last year, said Cummins. During the furor over the HST, that changed and now more than 2,000 British Columbians have joined the party. Despite the source of their new-found popularity, Cummins said their stand on the HST is not wholly against. “It is under considerable discussion within the party,” said Cummins in an interview with the Gazette. “Many people came to the party during the HST debate, but it was more about how it
came in. It was necessary to bring it in to get the $1.6 billion from the federal government. They (provincial government) needed the extra from HST to balance the books.” Cummins recognizes
John Cummins there are big problems if the public votes against the tax in June. “What happens now if the public says no?” Said Cummins. “How do we pay back the feds? What is the cost to business? It would cause a huge turmoil in the economy.” Cummins didn’t
have simple answers to other issues affecting North Islanders. On aquaculture Cummins recognized the importance of jobs but has concerns about the environment. “The natural resources, wild fish, have to be protected,” said Cummins, blaming Fisheries and Oceans Canada for being “promoters instead of protecters” of wild fish. “Fish farming may have to be down another way.” But when it comes to oil tankers traversing the B.C. coast Cummins was less concerned about environmental impacts. “A huge number of tankers are going in and out of Vancouver every year,” said Cummins. ‘And in and out of Washington State every day. The question is, can it be done safely?” But safety isn’t the only factor in the decision. “If we start shipping

IMPORTANT COUNT YOURSELF IN!
Local Government relies on per capita grants from the provincial government to help pay for the services that you our citizens expect. These per capita grants are paid each year to your local municipal council which relies on them to help cover the costs of these services. The amount received is based on the number of people that are counted in the Census. The more people, the more dollars that Local Government receives. That is why it is so important that every man, woman and child be included in the Census. The Census is now underway. If you have already sent in your form, thank you. If you have not yet filled out the form, please do so now. This Census total will be used to calculate our annual per capita grants for the next five years until the next Census is taken in 2016. If you need assistance or have any questions, please bring your form into your Municipal or Regional District office, or phone any of these numbers. Stand up, be counted That yellow envelope that was delivered to your door recently is an important document that will determine the future of the North Island. It is the census survey conducted in Canada every five years to paint a picture of our country and the people who live here. But the census is more than a simple survey. The census has far-reaching implications that affect the quality of life in North Island communities. That’s because census statistics are used in many of the decisions made by politicians, government, non-profit agencies and business. The numbers can determine the amount of grant money allocated to vital projects in our communities. The stats are used by business to determine if the North Island is a good place to build a new franchise or otherwise invest. The count is one part of all the factors considered in providing services such as health care, education, policing and transportation. And that’s why all North Islanders should make sure they fill out a census form. It can be done online in just a few minutes at www.census2011. gc.ca or just fill out that form in the yellow envelope and stick it in the mailbox before the end of the month. The few minutes spent answering the questions could make a long-term difference to the future of North Island communities.

Stick men, straw men debate HST VICTORIA – By now you’ve probably been exposed to the B.C. government’s “stick man” ad campaign to raise awareness of the harmonized sales tax. Stick men, or rather stick persons, sort out conflicting claims about the tax by going to the B.C. government’s website to get an accurate summary of what is and isn’t costing them more. Later versions will no doubt feature stick persons checking their mail for brochures offering arguments for and against the HST, and of course, those allimportant mail-in ballots that will arrive in June. This is an urgent prerequisite to an informed vote. Anyone who listens in to a telephone town hall or phone-in show, or gets reader feedback such as I receive, knows that the basic facts are still widely misunderstood. So what does the NDP opposition focus on? The ads cost $5 million, grumbles
B.C. Views Tom Fletcher
with
NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston. Add that to town halls and mailers and the referendum funding boils down to $7 million for proHST and a mere $250,000 for the FightHST effort. This is a classic “straw man” argument, where one sets up a false premise and then knocks it down. The ads do not advocate, they merely inform. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson propped up the NDP’s oldest scarecrow, that big “Liberal donor

corporations” are the main beneficiaries of the HST. In fact the entire ‘big business benefits most from HST’ narrative is false. Vancouver tax lawyer David Robertson points out that this is one of the “myths and misrepresentations” propagated by Bill Vander Zalm. In 24 pages, Robertson has written the clearest analysis I’ve seen so far, including a thorough demolition of Vander Zalm’s crude scare campaign known as FightHST, which has singled out banks and large resource companies. Robertson notes that banks are actually worse off. “…unlike most businesses, banks, financial institutions and insurance companies cannot recover GST/HST they pay on expenses,” he writes. They actually pay more under HST than they did under the old provincial sales tax (PST). As for FightHST’s other specified villains, “large
corporations” and “large resource companies,” their machinery and production equipment were long ago exempted from sales tax. No change there. “What the PST legislation did not contain were PST exemptions aimed specifically at small, independent businesses,” Robertson writes. The NDP-Vander Zalm axis of nonsense wants to deprive the poor of a modest tax shift in their favour, paid for by voluntary purchases of more affluent consumers. I’ve talked about the trend towards self-employment and small business as the Canadian economy adapts in a fast-changing world. You may not like that trend, and you may wish that everyone could have a union job with an employer-subsidized pension. That’s not what is happening today. Dear editor I read with interest Mark Allan’s guest column on our recent federal election. His dissatisfaction over the results is quite evident. He writes that we have elected a “Harperized” Conservative government but he says what Canada needs is a government to reflect “modern Canadian values”. This is just the sort of elitist crap that has turned the electorate away from the federal Liberal party. Liberal philosophy goes something like this: “We know what is good for you. You do not. So, we will pass laws to make sure you do what we know is good for you.” It is this “superior” attitude that has brought these pompous Liberals down, with Mr. Ignatieff leading the pack. And that is what has brought us the useless long run registry, conditional (get to stay at home) sentences for convicted criminals, day passes for convicted murderers, and a callous disregard for the rights of crime victims. Hopefully, with a strong Conservative mandate, the wishes of the majority of Canadians will finally be realized. Brian Thurber Port Hardy
Anti-hunter writer off-target Dear editor; In regards to the bear hunting article last issue, I found it to be lacking insight into guide outfitting and proper hunting ethics and legality. No hunting guide, nor a true hunter for food or sport would shoot a female with cubs. True hunters will first and foremost identify sex and size of a bear before ever getting into a shooting position. A food hunter will try for a younger male, while a hunting guide will put their client on a large boar. Bigger the bear, the bigger the guide’s tip, and if a female was taken, a guide would surely lose his job. This I know, for I was a hunting guide specializing in taking people to trophy hunt black and grizzly bears during the 1990’s. Since then I have been
"If there's a moratorium on bear hunting, we would end up like the University of Victoria with its infestation of rabbits." Tom Sewid
an eco-tour guide and captain using my hunting knowledge to take people to view our bear populations, on and off Vancouver Island. I no longer guide trophy hunters, but I do exercise my aboriginal hunting rights. More so in the coming years, for my son of 10 is named Gala’dzi (Kwakwala for Big Grizzly Bear) Hunter, and he fully intends to be a hunter, and I as his father constantly teach Hunter to hunt properly. He’s too young to grasp the importance to our communities
of the revenue that’s generated via bear viewing and what’s generated by the guide outfitting industry and resident hunters — as are most non-hunters. If there’s a moratorium on bear hunting, we would end up like the University of Victoria with its infestation of rabbits, in regards to bears. The hunting regulations at present are outdated and allow conflict between the hunter and the nonhunter. The use of boats to kill bears must be stopped a.s.a.p. I use the word kill, for shooting a bear off a
boat, there’s absolutely no hunt in the equation whatsoever. It’s far too easy to get close to the bear and, besides, a true hunter wants challenge. To keep bear populations up in ecotour operating areas and to ensure no interaction of the two user groups, intertidal zones (beaches), estuaries, river banks and lake shores need to be no-shoot zones. There should also be a halfkilometre no-shoot zone in the forest off fresh and saltwater beaches (riverbanks). Many hunters may scoff at this, but for goodness sakes, with trucks, quads, and motor bikes it’s a new era in hunting, where it’s far too easy to hunt bears. The true hunter knows it’s no biggy to land on a beach and journey inland and hunt without being seen or bothered by the non-hunt-
ers. It also ensures the hunt is placed back into bear hunting, and what better way to help keep bear numbers up? Besides, we must be very conscientious to respect others that may be out on the water or enjoying the woods where one hunts. This is the rationale I came to being a hunter, hunting guide and eco-tour operator. Right now we are destined for conflict if we dig our heels in and defend one end of the spectrum, in regards to bear hunting in British Columbia. If we work together to see better regulations come about to protect our interests of the bear resource, then we all win, but most of all the bears win by our cooperation. Bear-hunting claims boggle the mind Dear editor; Re U.S. hunters not welcome (letters, May 12): I can’t believe you would even publish this far fetched agenda-driven trash! #1. Hunters from Montana cannot legally hunt here on their own without the services of a guide outfitter, who would be providing accommodations for them as part of their service.
Letters to the editor
So it’s safe to say these guys (if they even exist) are poachers. NOT hunters. #2. By her version of the story they killed 54 bears in 4 days? That equates to 1.7 bears every hour. It is physically impossible to stalk, shoot, field dress and cape that many bears in such short time. #3. Let’s say they were just removing paws and galls. They probably still

couldn’t accomplish that feat, hence why conservation officers found her story pretty far-fetched.
#4. The amount of bears Bonnie sees is in no way related to the amount of bears killed by hunters. It’s
entirely related to where Bonnie goes and how hard she looks. Sounds to me like she is driving a road and expecting to see a pile of bears... Pretty hit and miss. Go where the bears ARE and you generally find them. I think you should retract that story from your publication as it’s total crap. Carl Sorenson Qualicum Beach

Mud bogging damaging and illegal Gazette staff VICTORIA - Ripping around in the bush on Crown land on an ORV (Offroad Vehicle) might seem like recreation to some people, but in B.C. it is a crime. “Everyone is encouraged to enjoy public forests and range lands but to stay safe and tread lightly. In a small bowl, using a stick blender, puree all ingredients together, withholding the small chopped mango, until mixture is smooth and well incorporated. Add in small chopped mango and pulse to desired texture. I pulsed the chopped mango only a couple of times as I preferred to have more texture to the aioli. You can pulse it to your desired consistency. Pour the aioli over the meat of your choice and cook the meat as usual. Kellie Dukes is a chef who lives in Port Hardy.

Bear rage cools during overnight vigil There are certain behaviours many of us share. One, is acting extremely grumpy when abruptly awoken; two, is being very possessive and not allowing anyone to touch, let’s say, a classic canoe. You touch such a cedar strip canoe without gloves and the owner will be upon you like a rabid beast. Now imagine tossing the two together and adding a bear into the fray. It was a few years back; we had just finished our interior hiking and set up a base camp for short day trips. Our choice was Kathleen Lake, a circular facility with trails radiating toward the centre where pit toilets were located. No matter where you set your tent, there were bear berries. My fellow hikers were having difficulty sleeping due to a slobbering bear, slurping on berries only a few feet from the head of the tent. To me, it’s like the soft sound of a flowing river; it puts me to sleep like a sputtering politician. The following evening it was decided to place MY homemade cedar strip canoe at the head of the tent to give my tentmates a sense of perceived safety from the scary midnight marauder. With the temperature down to -3C, we were abruptly awakened around 3 a.m. when a foolish bruin manhandled my canoe, tossing
it onto the tent. Not knowing the bruin’s intentions, one grumpy camper gathered hatchet and knife. It didn’t matter how mean or big the bear was, I was one grumpy, crazed camper who was going to have its hide before the night was out. It’s all about attitude.
I was out of the tent in seconds to confront our adversary in my full-length long johns, weapons at the ready. Much to my displeasure the bear had already moved off. I’m sure he sensed bear rage and knew to leave the vicinity. It was the next action
Our Backyard with Lawrence Woodall that befuddled my mates. Stepping back into the tent I quickly picked up my sleeping bag and exited. I muttered, “Remember Custer’s last stand” and “Is your

insurance paid up?” Inflicted with bear rage, my sleeping bag wrapped around my head, I wandered to the pit toilets where I had a good view of the campsite. If my bruin was in the vicinity, I was going to have a chat with him. For three hours I stood guard in sub-zero

weather before reason finally returned. With the evaporation of bear rage, I fell asleep. About 9 that morning the park interpreter, approached our campsite and advised us that three campers had noted a grizzly standing by the toilets that morning.

The best way to avoid sun-damage to your skin is to not go out in the sun. Not too practical. However, avoiding those peak times of day between 11 am and 4 pm and using proper clothing and sunscreen, can go a long way to keeping your skin more youthful-looking. Speaking of sun-damage, think of eye-protection, too. Choose sunglasses that have a sticker on them saying they provide at least 99% protection from UV light. For better protection, choose sunglasses with big lenses not tiny ones. If your current pair is scratched, get new ones. At this time of year, we also start thinking about insect repellants. Products contain “DEET” work by far the best. Other products like soybean oil, citronella oil and thiamine (vitamin B-1) have also been tried but give less than adequate protection. The oils have to be reapplied often while the vitamin B-1 does not show any evidence that it works. If you do get bitten by a mosquito, treat the bite with a bit of hydrocortisone cream (available without a prescription). You can also take an oral antihistamine to reduce the itching and reddening. However, if you are really sensitive to the bite, it is best to take an antihistamine before going into a mosquito-filled area. We are never too busy to give you advice on the choice of medications. Whether it be an antihistamine for allergic reactions or the choice of a laxative, you can always count on us for the best of advice. w w w . p e o p l e s d r u g m a r t . c o m * ÀÌÊ >À`ÞÊ Ê/ Õ `iÀL À`Ê > ÊUÊÓxä { xÓÓ * ÀÌÊ V i Ê Ê À Õ} Ì Ê* >â>ÊUÊÓxä xÈ Î£ÓÈ

Welcome visitors year round
Pain free in 2 weeks!

This is what happened to me personally. After suffering for years I desperately tried everything, drugs, natural products, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnets and nothing was of any real help. Finally I had relief in 2 weeks by taking shark cartilage that was specially processed to preserve the natural active ingredients. This is the kind we are now promoting. I realized then that there are over 50 million men and women that are battling the same illness and getting treatments that are not working well, otherwise we would not have this ongoing huge health problem. In the last 10 years we have helped tens of thousands of men and women to have less pain or no pain at all. This is a by-product of the food industry. No sharks are caught because of their bones/cartilage. Don’t let anybody confuse you. Nick A. Jerch, President

We have real EVIDENCE that it works. On our web site you find over 100 testimonials with full names and towns. All 100% true. Skeptics may call them. Here are some examples: Doctor suggested knee replacement after all his options failed with drugs and cortisone shots in knee and lower back. I recommend Bell Shark Cartilage to those millions suffering needlessly like I did for 40 years with arthritis in my knees. It's a shame that I was given drugs and injections all these years when a natural medicine could have spared me the endless torture day and night. Pat Laughlin, #1 Coldwater, ON My hip is 95% pain free. Pain killing drugs mask and Bell Shark Cartilage heals. Rebecca Hite, Oroville, CA I tried another brand and pain came back. 2 weeks on Bell and pain is gone again. Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ON Cancelled knee replacement. I was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK. For 32 years I cried barrels of tears. Was in and out of hospitals costing society tens of thousands of dollars. I have taken many thousands of pills that nearly killed me. Finally 3 bottles of Bell Shark Cartilage costing less than $100 stopped a lifetime of suffering without side effects. Eleanor Sauson, Shigawake, QC Others write: Can walk again for hours‌Climb stairs without hanging on to railing‌First time in 15 years can sleep at night‌Rheumatoid pain in joints down 90%, same for my sister.

Jordyn Wear of Lake Cowichan secondary and Kaitlyn Lasota of North Island Secondary battle for control of the ball during their semifinal contest in the Island A girls soccer tournament last week at Keserich Field in Duncan. Andrew Leong, Cowichan News Leader Pictorial
Gazette staff The senior girls soccer teams from both North Island Secondary School and Port Hardy Secondary School have qualified to compete in the Provincial A Championship Tournament June 2-4 at Glenlyon Norfolk School in Victoria. The NISS girls placed second in last week’s Island A Championships in Duncan and the PHSS girls finished third, with the top four teams advancing to the provincial finals. NISS opened with an 11-0 romp over Gold River to earn its spot into the final four. The Norsemen then blanked Lake Cowichan 4-0 to reach the championship final. In a rematch of last year’s provincial championship game, defending champion Glenlyon Norfolk shut down NISS 5-0 to take

the title. “We’ve got very few senior players, because grad will be held the same weekend — again (as the provincial tournament),” NISS coach Kathy Mitchell said. “It’s a young team, a rebuilding team, but the girls have a lot of talent and they’ll be a force in the coming seasons.” The PHSS girls, who last traveled to provincials in 2009, also won big in their opening game of the Island tourney, defeating Duncan Christian School to reach the semifinals. After a loss to Glenlyon Norfolk in the semis, the Whalers
topped Lake Cowichan to claim third place. “We were told we were extremely sportsmanlike by the referees there,” PHSS coach Sam McMunnigle said. “They were quite impressed by the girls. We’ve got quite a few players who have been at it since Grade 8, so they’ve been working quite hard for this.” The provincial championships will feature 16 teams, with games beginning at 9 a.m. each day. Each school will play three pool games Thursday and Friday, followed by a crossover semifinal Friday and a final placing game Saturday. The tourney will use three fields at the University of Victoria soccer complex as well as the school field at Glenlyon Norfolk. Players from all the schools will be feted with a banquet Friday evening, June 3.
Rosback skates for top U17 BC Cup team Gazette staff Port McNeill defenseman Thor Rosback helped Team Stars skate to the title Sunday in the Male U17 BC Cup hockey tournament at Salmon Arm. Team Stars rolled to a 6-2 win over Team Flyers in the final to take the trophy in the elite tournament for B.C.’s top age-group players. Robert Cahill of Port Hardy also competed in the tournament. His Team Canucks squad claimed bronze with a 3-0 win over Team Sabres in the third-place game. The two players, teammates for the North Island Eagles midget program last season, earned berths during district tryouts in Lake Cowichan in early April. They were matched on teams
with players from other areas in the province in the jamboree-style tournament format. In addition to playing with the Eagles in the recently completed season, Rosback was affiliated with the Campbell River Storm and played several games for the junior B team during the season. BC Hockey’s HighPerformance U17 program is specifically designed for players completing their first season of midget eligibility and playing midget or junior hockey. Earlier, Port Hardy’s Curtis McCarrick competed in the Male U16 BC Cup and Port McNeill’s Samantha Dutcyvich skated in the Female U18 BC Cup tourney.

Rangers rally past Hillbillies for 4-3 win J.R. Rardon Gazette staff HYDE CREEK — The satellite dish and television were back at Hyde Creek Ballpark Sunday. So was Arron Harper’s timely bat. Harper laced an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a tie and lift the Port McNeill Rangers to a 4-3 win over the Hyde Creek Hillbillies in North Vancouver Island Baseball League play. The hit came one week after Harper drilled a two-out, tworun double in an extrainning victory over the Hillbillies. It also came one week after the Hillbillies’ Keith Balcke installed a satellite dish and high-definition TV in his team’s thirdbase dugout for the Vancouver Canucks’ NHL playoff game against Nashville. On Sunday, the satellite rig was back in place for the Canucks’

Western Conference Finals opener against San Jose. Henrik Sedin’s game-winning goal came moments after the teams shook hands at the end of the baseball game and resulted in a whoop
from the Hillbillies’ dugout. Moments later, Rangers players crowded in, the teams watched the final, tense minutes of the hockey game in postgame camaraderie.
The Rangers (2-1) trailed 3-2 entering the fifth inning, but Ed James evened the score by driving in a run while reaching on an error, and Harper followed with his gamewinner off Hillbillies
reliever Ryan Rushton. Nick Russell threw three innings of onehit ball to pick up the win in relief for the Rangers. The Hillbillies (0-3) scored all three of their runs in the top of the first inning. Curtis Carmen hit a leadoff double, Ivan Hall walked, and both runners came around to score on a hit by Balcke, who finished 2-for-4. Balcke later scored on Adam Dmetrichuk’s ground ball. The Rangers got single runs back in the first and second innings, with Jordan Altmiks driving an RBI double and Dustin Carmen adding a sacrifice fly. Cubs 6, Hillbillies 2 On Saturday in Hyde Creek, a single swing by Brayden Demoe provided the difference as the Port Hardy Cubs (2-0) downed the Hillbillies. Demoe’s wood-bat, grand slam homer in the fifth inning plated
Lukas Jones, Chris Ranger and Brian Texmo, who reached base in front of him in a game that otherwise played as a pitcher’s duel. Dmetrichuk added an RBI single, and Hall and Glenn Moore
scored for Hyde Creek. The league will take a break for the upcoming long weekend for the annual Sointula Baseball Tournament, scheduled for Saturday through Monday.
