Master Inventory

Sigurd F. and Elizabeth Olson Personal Library

1995 Donation

In 1995, Robert and Yvonne Olson and Sigurt T. Olson donated a collection of Sigurd F. Olson's personal effects to the Sigurd Olson Environmental Instiute. This donation included the majority of Olson's personal library, approximately 700 books. Many of these books are personally inscribed by the authors to Sigurd Olson. In addition, many of the books are dog-eared, underlined, or annotated with marginal notes. In some volumes, notes, correspondence, photographs, and other ephemera are inserted between the pages.

A 42-page, handwritten inventory of the books donated in 1995 is extant and available in the files of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, the Northland College Advancement Office, and the Northland College Archives. There is also a typed inventory of Sigurd Olson's books extant. This inventory is labeld "Sigurd Olson Environmenal Institute Book Catalog" and is included as an appendix to the document titled "Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute Collections Plan," wich was prepared by Alan Craig. The second tab of this spreadsheet, labeled "1995 donation," documents books recorded in both inventories. Most, but not all, books appear on both inventories.

Later, Undated Donation

Sometime after 1995 and prior to the Fall of 2018, Robert Olson made a second donation of books to Nortland College and the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute. These books were collected from Robert Olson at his home in Seeley, Wisconsin, by the College's librarian (Julia Wagner), Mark Peterson, and Alan Craig, and they were initially stored in the Nothland College liberary. In the fall of 2018, the books were transferred to the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, and an inventory of the books was completed at this time.

This donation included approximately 100 volumes that were part of Sigurd F. and Elizabeth Olson's personal collection. Many of these volumes include inscriptions to Sigurd Olson, Elizabeth Olson, or both Sigurd and Elizabeth Olson. The third tab in this spreadsheet, labeled "Undated Donation," documents these books.

Robert Olson's undated donation also included books that appear to have been part of Robert and Yvonne Olson's personal collection, as indicated by inscriptions to one or both of them or by copyright dates that are subsequent to the deaths of both Sigurd F. and Elizabeth Olson. These books have been separated into a separate collection, and are documented elsewhere.

Long-Term Loan of Olson Library to Listening Point Foundation

In 2018 and 2019, pursuant to a memorandum of understanding between the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute and the the Listening Point Foundation, most of the volumes from Sigurd F. and Elizabeth Olson's personal library were transfered to the Listenting Point Foundation's main offices in Ely, Minnesota, at 106 E. Wilson Street the house where Sigurd and Elizabeth lived while they resided in Ely. The volumes will remain at this location for the foreseeable future.

The information above was prepared and documented by Alan Brew, the Executive Director of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute.
