May 1st is the 6th Sunday of Easter and we continue with our readings from Acts and Revelation. This scripture gives us a glimpse of heaven. Communion is served at both services. May 8th is the 7th Sunday of Easter. Bring your mother to church (it’s Mother’s Day) and we’ll explore the common good.
May 15th is the celebration of Pentecost- the third major festival in the life of the church. Wear something red to recognize the gift of the Holy Spirit. We will also commission our Mission Team that is headed for Colorado in June.

Thank You, Nancy and Lynne! Northminster is blessed to have many members who graciously volunteer to run projects for the Church, particularly mission projects. Few, however, stick it out for ten years. We have two such dedicated members who have devoted that much time to heading up the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Nancy Flamme has been responsible for IHN the last ten years and will be passing the torch to someone else this year. Lynne Tobin preceded Nancy in the job for the first ten years — she’s the member who actually started IHN at Northminster. The mission of the Interfaith Hospitality Network is to mobilize faith communities to help low income families achieve and sustain independence. IHN unites religious congregations to assist homeless families by providing accommodations and meals for three to five families at their facility for one
week. Northminster hosts families three times a year. Organizing each IHN event at Northminster is not a small job by any means. Beds and meals must be arranged for the homeless families who will be staying at the Church, and volunteers from the congregation must be lined up to work at the event. Lynne and Nancy have made the event a success every time, help-
ing the homeless families have an enriching experience. On behalf of the entire congregation and staff, we want to thank Nancy and Lynne for their extraordinary service. Northminster will be forever indebted to them. If you happen to see them at Church, be sure to extend your own personal thanks.

Pentecost Offering - Sunday, May 15 May brings us spring flowers, spring showers, and of course, the annual PCUSA Pentecost Offering. This special gift allows the church to impact young people, especially the needs of at-risk children. Our congregation retains 40% of the Pentecost offering to make an impact in the lives of young people within our own community. In the past, we have directed our Pente-
cost offering to our mission partner, ate community, thank you for your generous contribution. Westminster Neighborhood Ministries. Walking For Dreams - May 22 On Sunday, May 22, our Mission Team partner, Westminster Neighborhood Services, is participating in a 5k family and pet walk to raise funds and awareness for their work with families on the Indianapolis east side. And they’re looking for a few good two-legged AND fourlegged “foot” soldiers to join them! Registration begins at 1:00 pm at Buggs Temple at the north end of the downtown Canal. The walk begins at 2:00 pm. If you haven’t walked the Canal, this is the perfect opportunity to soak in a lovely area of our city AND contribute to our local community at the same time.
Walking for Dreams has no registration or entry fee. All proceeds go directly to the families that WNS assists (except for the direct costs of printing signs.) Let’s show our support for WNS! Organize your team of fellow NPC members, friends, and family. Gather pledges. Get some exercise.
Back-to-School Extravaganza This year, BTS Xtravaganza organizers’ goal is to prepare 1,100 students in Washington Township to start the 2016 school year with new clothes, shoes, packed backpacks, and health exams. And Northminster, led by Jerry Gray, looks to step up again for some clothes collecting, laundering, sorting, and packing. Last year, 30% of our members participated. Let’s go for 50% this year! YOU can participate by taking a bag of clothes home to clean and fold, starting in June. Or, you can assist in collecting and sorting, packing, setting up and participat-
ing at the event, which is Sunday, July 31. Start collecting gently used clothing (coats, shirts, pants/slacks, dresses, sweaters, winter gear) for students grades 1-8. If you are unable to commit time and effort, consider a monetary contribution towards the purchase of new underwear and jeans. Denver Mission Trip – by Julie Shannon The Denver mission trip is approaching quickly. On May 15, our team will be commissioned during the 11am worship service. Our group will be working alongside Emma Moore, who is serving as a Presbyterian Church Young Adult Volunteer for the DOOR Program of Denver. DOOR is a gateway for encountering the city through the eyes, ears, and heart of God. They are dedicated to providing life-changing experiences for all participants, rooted in relationship and solidarity, with local communities and neighborhoods. All programming grows out of a commitment to mutual respect and thoughtful reflection. Our multi-age group of six adults and six youth will fly into Denver on June 2. We start with an orientation on Thursday night; work all day on Friday at Metro Caring. As Denver’s leading hunger-relief
organization, Metro Caring meets people’s immediate need for food while also addressing the root causes of hunger and poverty. On Saturday we will tour the city and have a gentrification, learning tour experience. We will be eating many of our meals and be lodged at a Mennonite Church, near to where we will be serving. Please keep the following participants in prayer: Ruth Moore, Julie Shannon, Katie Bulloff, Jody Yohn, Melissa Hopkins, Zach, Megan, Aidan, & Allison Yohn, Emma Longo, and Leah and Stella Shannon. Day of Caring – by Nancy Flamme On September 18, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, we will be serving our community by teaming up with five of our mission partners for service projects. These service projects will replace our usual Sunday services. We will be partnering with these five organizations:

What Do Deacons Do? The Deacons want to thank the congregation for their generous support of the spring plant sale, and t-shirt “spirit” wear purchases. With your help we have raised over $3,000 dollars for the Deacons Fund and their ministry programs – like the program descriptions below. School 55 Honors Banquet – the Deacons will be hosting an honors dinner for all the honor role students on June 2nd. The deacons provide the meal, certificates and prizes for all the children. Flowers for School 55 – the Deacons will be helping School 55 plant some flowers around the school on Garden Day on May 24. Community Picnic – the Deacons will be helping host the Community picnic on Saturday, May 21 (see article, front cover). The museum’s collection comes from the more modern miniature world and includes children’s doll houses that are not to scale (and have been well-loved), as well as small scale reproductions of items (many are quite exquisite) that become the contents of dollhouses, room boxes, vignettes, or any setting that the ingenious miniaturist chooses to create, often with painstaking attention to detail. Christian Education / Family Ministries Happenings - by Debbie Bulloff All School age children (K-5th gr) will attend worship with their parents and celebrate communion with the congregation on the first Sunday of the month, May 1. Look for the children’s bulletin which will be available along with the regular Sunday worship bulletin.
After Time with Children, toddlers and preschoolers will proceed to their classrooms on the 1st floor of the C.E. wing for Church School and care. Children’s Church, for K-5th graders, will be offered at both services
after the Time with Children on Sundays, May 8, 15, and 22. All school age children will attend worship on Sunday, May 29, with their families. Nursery, Toddler, and Preschool Church School and Care, will be offered every Sunday.
Vacation Bible School/Arts Camp - June 6 - 9, 5:45 - 8:00 pm “Who is my Neighbor?” is our theme. Choose a class you wish to pursue all week: Painting, Music (possible drum circle), Yoga/ Meditation with Tracey Hart, Drama, Journalism (creative writing, editing, photography). We will have storytelling, music, snacks and games for all with the classes embedded in each evening’s schedule! Preschoolers

Copies of all of the Bible Stories for Lent through Eastertide from the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum are available in your child’s classroom. We are following the Lectionary for Year C. May 1 Focus Scripture Acts 16: 9-15 The Holy Spirit carries us in directions we may not have chosen and to margins where we may not have gone. The first convert to the early church in Europe was Lydia, an Asian woman (from Asia Minor). Lydia and Paul serve as disciples together; they minister to

May Youth Fellowship – by Julie Shannon May 1 The Youth Group will volunteer for Interfaith Hospitality Network and serve as activity hosts from 6-8 pm. May 8 No Youth Group. Celebrate Mom. May 15 Regular Youth Group, 6-8 pm. May 21 Community Picnic. We need youth and families to help at this Community Picnic. We will have kid games (corn hole and such), face painting and mural painting. May 22 Graduate Recognition during the 9 and 11 am worship services. At 10 am in Calvin Hall, there will be a special breakfast in their honor, along with cake and a picture display slide show. Come at 10 am and support our grads!
May 22 & May 29 No Youth Group. We will start our summer schedule. VBS/Arts Camp will be June 6-9. We will plan a breakout night, go-carts, and maybe day trip to an amusement park. Stay tuned! Our summer is full of trips! Gifts for Grads For almost a decade, Jackie Schmidt, in honor of her late husband Marvin, has been granting college scholarships to students who attend Indiana colleges and universities (private or state). This “Teri Thomas Scholarship” began around 2006. In the beginning, one name was drawn out of a bowl and that student received the scholarship. Jackie changed that after a couple of years and began granting scholarships to every graduate who attends an Indiana School – up to five last year! This is approaching almost $20,000 of financial support for Northminster graduates. This money is very appreciated by the families, as college is an increasingly costly endeavor. Jackie and her family are very generous and view this is as a way to honor the memories and lives of her late husband Marvin, and late daughter Anne. What an amazing gift of love and support to provide these young people. Amen, and thank you, Schmidt family! Our 2016 NPC graduates are: Andrew Schmahl, Juliette Hardesty, Katherine Ruegger, Bradley Hill, William Boris and Logan Smithers. -8-

Foundation Minute – by Robert Rothrock
When supervising the rebuilding of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London (which took about 50 years to complete) architect Christopher Wren asked three different laborers what they were doing. One said he was cutting stone. The second said he was earning six shillings. The third said, “I’m helping Sir Christopher Wren build a great cathedral!” How are you helping build something great for the future? Making a bequest is easy and costs you nothing during your lifetime. Your assets remain in your control. After you make provisions for your family, you can give a gift to your church by including a bequest statement in your will. There is a quick, simple way to make a bequest. I will cover that next time.

You are invited to wear your floral shirts. This free concert is The Last Queen of Hawaii: Music from the Soul of the Hawaiian Saga. Founded in 1996 by Artistic Director Jordan Sramek, The Rose Ensemble has achieved an international reputation as a premiere American early music ensemble. Each performance illuminates centuries of rarely heard repertoire, bringing to modern audiences research from the world’s manuscript libraries and fresh perspectives on history, culture, politics and spirituality from around the globe. With ten critically acclaimed recordings and a diverse selection of concert programs, the group has thrilled audiences across the United States and Europe with repertoire spanning 1,000 years and over 25 languages. Unique for Sound & Spirit, the concert will take us on a journey through Hawaii’s musical heritage
