WISCONSIN OVERLAND LENDS A HAND
BY CINDY POPE
Please do not think I am being disrespectful when I say the first time i saw the Bishop Baraga shrine statue, I thought it looked like something out of a comic book. The monument sits atop a striking red rock bluff overlooking L'Anse & Keweenaw Bay. Large arches of wood clad in metal reach skyward like Doctor Octo tentacles. Resting on a stainless steel cloud, the Bishop holds a 26' pair of snowshoes in one hand and a 7' crucifix in the other. Maybe my impression is due to an overactive imagination and the fact that I have not been exposed to much Catholic religious imagery, being raised in a Swedish Covenant church, but the shrine is impressive and the views from the bluff are amazing.

A local resident, Nancy Haun, is involved with the Barga Foundation and care taking of the grounds. She mentioned that they had acquired land adjacent to the shrine and needed volunteers to clear some campsites for drop-in, by donation camping, and Wisconsin Overland members set a date to help out and do a little PR for the overland cause.
We arrived at the shrine after camping at the Sturgeon River Gorge. Many hands made quick work of the two campsites and we spent the rest of the weekend chasing waterfalls, roaming the wilds of the Huron Mountains and camping on the shore of Lake Superior. Thanks to all who came to help!
