Things to know about motor oil When it comes to taking care of their vehicles, many motorists prefer to be overly cautious. While that's not necessarily a bad thing, there are times when being too cautious can unnecessarily cost you money. Motor oil, and when to change that oil, has long been a point of contention. Many drivers grew up being told that motor oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. However, that myth has been debunked for many of today's vehicles, which should come with suggested intervals between oil changes. According to Edmunds.com, in 2010 the average interval for oil changes was 7,800 miles. In addition to changing a car's motor oil less frequently, there are other things drivers should know about motor oil. * Oil does not necessarily need to be changed before a long trip. Taking a trip? While it's good to have your car examined before embarking, if the recommended oil change interval is not up, then you do not need to

preemptively change your oil. Such a change is likely unnecessary and will not improve the performance of your vehicle during the trip. * Black oil does not necessitate a change. Conventional wisdom once suggested if the oil on the dipstick is black then it needs to be changed. But nowadays automotive professionals are noting that black oil is doing its job and different additives might be changing the oil's color, which means the oil doesn't need to be changed. * You can use petroleum-based oil after using synthetic. Another longstanding myth regarding motor oil was that once you use a synthetic motor oil instead of a petroleumbased oil you have to continue using synthetic oil, which is often more expensive than more traditional motor oil, in order to avoid harming the vehicle. However, automotive professionals have noted that these two types of oils are now often blended, meaning switching back and forth from one to the

other is not likely to cause any damage to your vehicle. Just be sure to use motor oil that meets the standards set forth in your vehicle's owner's manual. * Consider an earlier oil change after buying a new vehicle. Sometimes a new vehicle will need an oil change after its first 3,000 miles. However, this does not mean your vehicle will need one every 3,000 miles. According to Blackstone Laboratories, who study motor oil, oil samples taken from engines during their initial 3,000 miles of driving had elevated metal levels from the camshafts and pistons. These elevated levels will not necessarily be harmful, but some auto manufacturers recommend a shorter initial interval just to be safe. Honda, however, includes an anti-wear additive in their breakin oil and advises against changing their oil early. Consult your owner's manual to determine if it's best to change your oil after the initial 3,000 miles or to let it go until the recommended interval.

BECAUSE ANYONE WHO OWNS A CAR NEEDS A LAUGH ONCE A WEEK.

15-YEAR-OLD IS CHARGING PARENTS TOO MUCH FOR SMALL REPAIR Dear Car Talk: My 15-year-old son replaced the bulb for my rear turn signal on my 2011 Buick Enclave. He researched it on the Internet, completed it in a timely manner and cleaned up after himself. He wants to be paid $35 for this work. His father, an economist, thinks he needs to justify this fee. I think this is a good question for you. And by the way, what would you charge to replace this bulb? Anne Well, we have two prices, Anne. If it’s a regular customer of ours, we’ll do it for nothing; it’s just a service we provide to our regulars. They can stop in and get little things like that taken care of. We figure we’ll have a chance to make it up when we gouge them for a transmission rebuild someday. I guess your son doesn’t see you as a potential long-term customer, Anne! If someone comes in and they’re not a regular customer, we’d probably charge $35 or $40. The bulb itself probably is five or six bucks, and it’s a 10-minute job for someone who’s done it a thousand times. But we have to pay for rent, tools, salaries and benefits, not to mention the bad coffee in the waiting room. But your kid is a freelancer. He has no expenses. He probably used your tools. And your Internet service to do the research. So his rate should be lower. And he’s charging you for his education, too. You’re paying him to learn how to do this. Remind him that in about three years, he may be looking to you to contribute a very large sum toward his educational expenses. So he may want to cut you a “good customer” break this time. Tell him you’ll give him 20 bucks. And mention that if he doesn’t moan and groan too much, you’ll also throw in his continued free room and board for now. And Internet. *** Wait! Don’t buy another car without the mechanic’s checklist that’s included in Car Talk’s pamphlet “How to Buy a Great Used Car: Secrets Only Your Mechanic Knows.” It will help you get a good used car and avoid the clunkers. Send $4.75 (check or money order) to Used Car, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. *** Got a question about cars? SEATTLE (AP) — A 30-foot gray whale has turned up dead under the Washington state ferry terminal in downtown Seattle, where its stench is wafting into the noses of thousands of daily commuters. A Washington State Ferries spokeswoman, Susan Harris-Huether, says the whale was found just before 11 p.m. Wednesday. She says people are reporting that the smell is “not good.” Harris says it’s under a dock, but ferry service Thursday wasn’t affected. A spokesman with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday that officials believe the whale may have been there for about a week. Michael Milstein says it’s not known yet why the animal died, how it got there or other details. He says NOAA will work with ferry officials and others to move the animal so a necropsy can be conducted.

illegal cargo far from the view of border authorities in the United States. One motorist spotted the containers while pumping gas after crossing into Southern California this month, and thought it might be a bomb. His call to police prompted an emergency response and then a shocker: 13 pounds of heroin were packed inside. There have been four such incidents in San Diego since Jan. 12, all involving drivers enrolled in the federal “trusted traveler” program, which enables hundreds of thousands of people who pass extensive background checks to whiz past inspectors with less scrutiny.

Obama will not meet with Israeli Prime Minister WASHINGTON (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned trip to Washington in March is kicking up a diplomatic dust storm in the nation’s capital. On Thursday, the White House said President Barack Obama would not meet the prime minister when he comes to the U.S. to address a joint session of Congress. The official White House explanation was that Netanyahu’s visit fell too close to the Israeli election and the Obama administration wanted to avoid the appearance of taking sides. “As a matter of longstanding practice and principle, we do not see heads of state or candidates in close proximity to their elections, so as to avoid the appearance of influencing a democratic election in a foreign country,” National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said. But the timing of Netanyahu’s visit also gave the White House a convenient means of retaliating against the prime minister for his decision to accept an invitation from Republican leaders to address Congress. GOP lawmakers and

Man pleads not guilty in plot to kill at US Capitol CINCINNATI (AP) — An Ohio man has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of plotting to kill officials and workers at the U.S. Capitol. Twenty-year-old Christopher Lee Cornell entered the pleas Thursday during a brief arraignment in federal court. He will continue to be held without bond. Cornell was indicted Wednesday on charges that carry possible sentences of up to 20 years each. They allege attempted murder of U.S. officials and employees and solicitation to commit a crime of violence. He also faces a firearms-related charge.

The Associated Press

In this October 2014 file photo, President Barack Obama meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington. President Barack Obama will not meet with Netanyahu when he travels to Washington in March, the White House said Thursday, one day after being caught off-guard by Republicans’ invitation for the Israeli leader to address a joint session of Congress. Netanyahu worked out the arrangement without consulting with the White House or State Department, only alerting the Obama administration a few hours before the Israeli leader’s trip was made public. The White House appeared stunned by what it saw as a breach of diplomatic decorum by Netanyahu, a leader with whom Obama has a history of tension. “The typical protocol would suggest that the leader of a country would contact the leader of another country when he’s traveling there,”

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. “That certainly is how President Obama’s trips are planned when we travel overseas. So this particular event seems to be a departure from that protocol.” At the center of the maneuvering around Netanyahu’s visit are the high-stakes, U.S.led nuclear negotiations with Iran, a nation Israel views as an existential threat. Netanyahu and Republican lawmakers, along with some Democrats, are united in their belief that Congress should

pass legislation threatening Iran with new economic sanctions if the talks break down. Obama has vigorously warned that a sanctions bill could upend the negotiations and has vowed to veto any measure that lands on his desk. House Speaker John Boehner, who helped orchestrate Netanyahu’s visit along with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, told a private meeting of GOP lawmakers Wednesday that Congress would proceed on further penalties against Iran despite Obama’s warning.

You are South in each of the following three hands. What would you bid at the point where the question mark appears? 1. ♠ KQ2 ♥ AKJ974 ♦ AQ43 ♣ — North East South West 1♦ Pass 2♥ Pass 3♦ Pass ? 2. ♠ AKJ52 ♥ AKJ94 ♦ 10 ♣ Q6 South West North East 1♠ Pass 2♣ Pass 2♥ Pass 3♣ Pass ? 3. ♠ AK83 ♥ KQ ♦ 10 ♣ AJ9852 South West North East 1♣ Pass 1♥ 2♦ 2♠ Pass 3♥ Pass ? *** 1. Four diamonds. Once partner rebids diamonds opposite your jump-shift, you should feel confident about making a small slam in diamonds, and possibly a grand slam. About all you need from partner for the grand slam is the king of diamonds and ace of spades. By far the best strategy at this point is to raise partner to four diamonds, hoping he will next bid four spades to show the ace. If he does, you plan to leap to seven diamonds. It would

Bigar Horoscope Aries (March 21-April 19) HHHH You could be facing a decision that will force you to go within. You might resist the process at first, but you will warm up to it eventually. Don’t fight it, and you will have an easier time. Make time to have a discussion with a key confidant. Tonight: Try not to be so visible. Taurus (April 20-May 20) HHHHH Zero in on what you want. Information you are receiving could be subject to dramatic change, even if you don’t see it yet. Emphasize your goals and priorities. A get-together with friends will be highlighted. Make a note of what is not being said. Tonight: TGIF! Gemini (May 21-June 20) HHHH You could be startled by how someone else takes a stand before you can even verbalize what you feel needs to be done. Try not to hold a grudge. This person might want control at any cost. The only way to win a power struggle here is not to play. Tonight: Leader of the gang. Cancer (June 21-July 22) HHHH Reach out for more information and/or to an expert if you are not satisfied with what you are hearing. You could be questioning what works for you. Distance yourself from the issue as much as possible; only then can you make a good decision. Tonight: Follow the music. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) HHHH You’ll want to cut back and relax more, yet you might resist letting go of certain responsibilities. Figure out what you really want to do, and you won’t have a problem. A loved one will let you know where he or she is coming from. Tonight: Munchies with a friend. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) HHHH You seem to be unusually resourceful when dealing with someone who can be very controlling. Be aware of your objective, and

be unwise to bid four notrump over three diamonds. Partner might respond five diamonds, indicating one ace, and you would not know whether he had the ace of clubs or ace of spades. It would also be wrong to bid three hearts over three diamonds. Your hearts are rebiddable, but after partner’s three-diamond bid, you should strongly favor his suit. 2. Five clubs. You’d like to have a third trump, of course, but two is all you were dealt. North is virtually certain to have six (possibly seven) clubs, and your Q-6 are therefore adequate support. You should not persist with either spades or hearts, which could easily lead to the wrong contract. The leap to five clubs implies significant extra values and pinpoints your singleton diamond, enabling partner to carry on to slam with a hand such as: ♠ 76 ♥ Q3 ♦ J75 ♣ AKJ1064. 3. Four hearts. Here also you should have no compunctions about raising partner with only two trumps (which are of much better quality this time). As in the previous example, your heart raise might do much more than get you to the best game contract; it might also get you to a good slam, with the key being your singleton diamond. It might bother you to bid clubs, spades and hearts in that order, without once rebidding your six-card suit. But that is a very small price to pay for making the bid that is almost certain to produce the best result. don’t play into this person’s control games. The results will be a lot better than you might have expected. Tonight: Accept a special invitation. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) HHHH You could be at your wits’ end when dealing with a difficult, controlling person. Avoid getting into a conflict by backing away carefully. The only way to be effective is to be nonreactive. Listen to others’ feedback. Tonight: Accept a colleague’s invitation. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) HHHHH You might have to handle a task, but your mind will be on a loved one. Break free from the shackles of your schedule, and go be with this person. Remember that life is for living. Sometimes you get too caught up with work and responsibilities. Tonight: As you like it. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) HHHH Perhaps you don’t realize how much you enjoy staying close to home. However, given the opportunity, you might consider having a home-based business, if you don’t already. Make a call to someone. Tonight: Kick back. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) HHHH Express what you feel, and remember to be diplomatic. You will get better results than if you were to proceed in your usual way. Someone might be trying to win a power play, but this person doesn’t know how strong and willful you are. Tonight: Head out with friends. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) HHHH You could have the best intentions, but you might unknowingly trigger others. Do some soul searching or have a discussion with a trusted friend. You will want to root out this problem in order to have better communication. Tonight: Treat a friend. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) HHHH You might feel as if you’re on top of the world, yet a problem could be brewing within a friendship. This issue will need to be addressed. Ask yourself how important this person is to you, and then proceed accordingly. Tonight: You are noticed wherever you are.
