Necker Island

02 British Virgin Islands

Spread across 74 acres off the coast of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, Necker Island has long been considered one of the most stunning private islands in the world. Having undergone major renovations after its near-total destruction by Hurricane Irma in 2017, the island reopened in 2021. Along with the completion of a new Balinese-style house, the rebuild included the addition of three new wind turbines, which, with the help of over 1,200 solar panels, allow the resort to run on 90 percent renewable energy. Added to this, Necker Island has been working hard to recultivate the mangroves in the British Virgin Islands, a great majority of which were wiped out by Hurricane Irma. Their ability to act as a carbon sink means that mangrove forests are considered one of the most important habitats and are critical in the protection of coastlines from erosion and are a vital habitat for sea life.
