Het is tijd voor North Sea Jazz 2011!

Beste festivalbezoeker, Eerst even een terugblik. 2010 was een bijzonder jaar voor het North Sea Jazz-team. Allereerst was daar natuurlijk de historische 35e editie in Rotterdam. De hitte, de wolkbreuk op zaterdag en vooral de veelbesproken WK-finale op zondag liggen ons nog vers in het geheugen. En nog geen twee maanden later stond het volgende avontuur op de agenda: de eerste editie van Curaçao North Sea Jazz. Maanden van intensieve voorbereidingen werden beloond met een daverend succes, wat dit jaar weer een spectaculair vervolg gaat krijgen. Kortom; zeker niet het makkelijkste, maar wel een van meest memorabele jaren. Met natuurlijk ook vooral heel veel mooie muziek - en daar gaat het natuurlijk uiteindelijk om! En mooie muziek hebben we ook in overvloed op North Sea Jazz 2011. Dat zult u na het lezen van deze brochure ongetwijfeld kunnen beamen. Om alvast een voorschot te nemen: een van de meest spraakmakende tournees van deze zomer is ongetwijfeld

Tribute to Miles van het supertrio Hancock, Miller en Shorter. Ook BB, Blues Boy, King is gelukkig weer van de partij. Zolang zijn hoge leeftijd (85!) het toelaat blijft het voor ons een grote eer om hem te mogen presenteren. Nog een greep uit de vele grote namen : Chick Corea’s Return to Forever, Paul Simon, hiphop-icoon Snoop Dogg, soullegende Mavis Staples… te veel om op te noemen. Naast deze legends dit jaar veel ruimte voor de jongere generatie. Van Esperanza Spalding tot Selah Sue, van Ben l’Oncle Soul tot Jonathan Jeremiah, van Raphael Saadiq tot James Blake; alle grote talenten van de jongere lichting zijn erbij dit jaar. Deze meer dan ooit eclectische generatie zal u laten zien dat muzikale grenzen steeds meer vervagen en alle genres moeiteloos versmelten in een ongetwijfeld prachtig North Sea Jazz 2011. Jazz is meer dan muziek, het is storytelling Rotterdam is een stad met veel gezichten. Een prachtige skyline, bruisende evenementen, een levendig uitgaansleven en veel verschillende culturen. Een van de belangrijkste smaakmakers is North Sea Jazz, een begrip voor iedere muziekliefhebber. Dit jaar op 8, 9 en 10 juli in een compleet vernieuwd sportpaleis Ahoy. Jazz is muziek met vele gezichten en eigenlijk meer dan muziek. Het is storytelling. Ruim een eeuw geleden smolten Afrikaanse en Europese verhalen in Amerika samen tot een muziekstroming waarin het diepste leed en de grootste inspiratie tot uitdrukking werden gebracht. Jazz werd en is nog steeds een voedingsbodem voor vele andere musici en muziekstijlen. Die muzikale diversiteit ziet u uiteraard terug in de programmering van de 36e editie van North Sea Jazz.

De Britse rapper M.A. Fraser zei eens: “Eigenlijk is muziek de manier waarop religie zou moeten functioneren: zeventienduizend volslagen vreemden troepen samen in het sportpaleis, en de vonk slaat meteen over. Ze herkennen elkaars geluk.” Zo’n sportpaleis heeft Rotterdam; het vernieuwde Ahoy geeft ruim baan aan het muzikale geluk van duizenden liefhebbers. Een nieuwe constructie geeft het complex meer draagkracht: ‘het dak kan er af ’. Er kunnen meer bezoekers in, de stoelen zijn comfortabeler en last but not least: de akoestiek is beter. Niet onbelangrijk voor een locatie die het meest toonaangevende muziekfestival in huis heeft, met de grootste diversiteit aan gezichten en dus met het leukste publiek. Ahmed Aboutaleb,

Welkom bij North Sea Jazz!

Het North Sea Jazz festival is het grootste indoor festival ter wereld. Net als voorgaande jaren belooft ook deze 36e editie weer een groot feest te worden, met namen als Natalie Cole, Ahmad Jamal, The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra en speciale samenwerkingen tussen Al Jarreau, Jon Hendricks en Kurt Elling met het Metropole Orkest en het ‘Tribute to Miles’ van Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock en Wayne Shorter. North Sea Jazz staat wereldwijd bekend als het festival waar in drie dagen het verleden, heden én de toekomst van de jazz langskomen. Stijlen die worden vertoond lopen uiteen van traditionele New Orleans jazz, bop, fusion, free jazz, en swing tot avant-garde en electronic jazz. Aangevuld met blues, soul, funk, gospel, R&B, hiphop, world beat, latin en pop betekent dat vooral dat iedereen op het festival iets van z’n gading vindt. Vroeger en nu

Het North Sea Jazz festival begon in 1976 in het Nederlands Congresgebouw in Den Haag. Destijds traden driehonderd muzikanten op in zes zalen. De eerste editie trok negenduizend bezoekers, die konden genieten van optredens van grootheden als Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie, Stan Getz en Dizzy Gillespie. Door de jaren heen zijn de jazzlegendes blijven komen, en breidde het festival zich steeds meer uit. In 2006 verhuisde North Sea Jazz naar de huidige locatie: het Rotterdamse Ahoy. Daar verwacht de organisatie dit jaar ruim duizend muzikanten, verdeeld over bijna 150 optredens en dertien podia. Ook de bezoekersaantallen zijn flink gestegen en lagen de laatste jaren tussen de 65.000 en 70.000 mensen. Toch blijft het festival zijn intieme en gezellige karakter houden.

North Sea Jazz op radio, televisie en online De omroep NTR * is zoals elk jaar op North Sea Jazz aanwezig met een radio- en TVstudio van waaruit live uitzendingen worden verzorgd en opnames worden gemaakt. NTR radio zendt dagelijks live uit op Radio 6, van 14.00 tot 01.00 uur. Talloze live concerten worden afgewisseld met sfeerverslagen, specials en interviews met de artiesten. Op Nederland 2 en 3 doet de NTR in drie rechtstreekse TV-uitzendingen verslag van het festival. Korte reportages, informatie over musici, interviews en veel muziekfragmenten geven een overzicht van de oude helden, de nieuwkomers en de bonte verzameling van stijlen en publiek. De website www.radio6.nl biedt een ruim aanbod van live concertopnamen, sfeerreportages en achtergronden. Het digitale themakanaal Cultura zendt op alle dagen uit.

Eten, drinken, winkelen

Op het festival is het niet alleen genieten van prachtige muziek, maar ook van heerlijk eten en drinken. Van Thaise curry’s tot pizza en alle wereldgerechten er tussenin, van bier tot tropische cocktails; u vindt talloze lekkernijen bij de vele horecagelegenheden. Daar kunt u betalen met speciale festivalmunten, die te verkrijgen zijn bij de balie in de entreehal en bij uitgiftemachines op verschillende locaties (betaling met pin). De munten kunnen tot het einde van het festival geretourneerd worden aan de kassa bij de uitgang. Winkelen kan naar hartelust op North Sea Jazz. U vindt winkels en stands op verschillende locaties. Bijna alles is hier te vinden: elpees en cd’s, boeken en tijdschriften, muziekinstrumenten, sieraden, kleding en kunst. De populaire NSJ merchandise zoals T-shirts, tassen, posters en nog veel meer is te koop op verschillende punten. Ook zijn daar de meeste recente tijdsschema’s en de Who’s Who Festival Guide te verkrijgen.

2011: focus op nieuw talent!

We leven in een vitale periode voor de jazz in al zijn verschijningsvormen: er zijn veel interessante artiesten die de stroming nieuwe impulsen geven. Vandaar dat North Sea Jazz dit jaar veel ruimte schenkt aan jong talent. Met die gedachte is er dit jaar geen Artist In Residence, maar krijgen twee jonge muzikanten een Carte Blanche en zullen op elke festivaldag acte de présence geven.

Binnen het thema Infused presenteert North Sea Jazz een aantal groepen die op een frisse manier jazz, rock en funk met elkaar mengen. Was men in de jaren zeventig geïnspireerd door de destijds nieuwe sound van elektrisch versterkte instrumenten, die ook erg ‘clean’ gespeeld konden worden, nu is de sound vuiger en stoerder. Daarbij komt vernieuwing door gebruik van laptop en electronica enerzijds, en improvisatiekenmerken uit de free jazz anderzijds. Vanavond te bewonderen bij onder meer Kneebody, Mona Lisa Overdrive & FullDuplexx en Mostly Other People Do The Killing. New Free Bop

Highlights Vrijdag 8 juli Tijd voor Een nieuwe generatie

We leven in een vitale periode voor de jazz in al zijn verschijningsvormen: er zijn veel interessante artiesten die de stroming artistiek nieuwe impulsen geven. In de mainstream jazz vonden sterke namen in korte tijd een groot publiek, en in genres die tegen jazz aanleunen geldt dezelfde tendens. De Engelse zangeres Rumer beleeft een bliksemcarrière en ook soul/pop-zangeres Janelle Monáe kan meteen een grote zaal aan. Een mooie nieuwe jazznaam is Esperanza Spalding, die optreedt met haar Chamber Music Society. Onlangs won ze een begeerde Grammy als Beste Nieuwkomer, waarmee ze veel mainstream artiesten achter zich liet. Daarom schenkt North Sea Jazz dit jaar veel ruimte aan jong talent. Met die gedachte is ook gekozen geen Artist In Residence te benoemen zoals in vorige jaren. In plaats daarvan krijgen twee jonge muzikanten een Carte Blanche; te weten Colin Benders alias Kyteman en Rudresh Mahanthappa. Zij zullen op elke festivaldag acte de présence geven.

Carte Blanche: Kyteman

Colin Benders (ook bekend onder de naam Kyteman) kwam, zag en overwon. Hij was de afgelopen jaren Nederland’s meest spraakmakende jonge artiest op het raakvlak van jazz en popmuziek. Binnen een jaar maakte hij met zijn Hiphop Orkest een vlucht van een cluboptreden in Utrecht tot een uitverkochte Heineken Music Hall. Gezien zijn enorme veelzijdigheid verdient hij het om uit te mogen pakken op North Sea Jazz. Vanavond heeft Colin Benders speciaal voor het festival zijn oom Jacky Terrasson uitgenodigd. Terrasson is een oude bekende van North Sea Jazz en staat met zijn trio in de Madeira-zaal. Carte Blanche: Rudresh Mahanthappa

Rudresh Mahanthappa werd door toonaangevende jazzbladen als Downbeat en Jazz Journalist afgelopen jaar uitgeroepen tot Altsaxofonist van het Jaar. Zijn geluid wordt omschreven als een mix tussen het ritmisch onderzoek van Steve Coleman en de introspectieve zoektocht naar de lyriek van John Coltrane. Voor zijn optreden vanavond ontmoet Rudresh, in een akoestisch kwintet, altsaxofonist Bunky Green. Dit in het kader van Apex; de titel van hun gezamenlijke album uit 2010.

Een stijl met referenties naar de free bop uit de vroege jaren zestig, die tussen hard-bop, modale jazz en free jazz in lag. Na de strikte regels van de neo-bop en de generatie musici die zich op de free jazz concentreerden, onderzoeken jonge muzikanten nu de lyriek en de soul in de jazz met de bagage van vijftig jaar muziekgeschiedenis. Ze vinden die op dit snijvlak tussen modale jazz en free jazz. Dit tonen onder meer Francesco Bearzatti, Tony Malaby met o.a. William Parker, en Liam Sillery. Verder een jamsessie die geleid wordt door Arjen Gorter en de veelbelovende trompettist Peter Evans, waarin aandacht voor het memorabele free bop-album Live At the Five Spot van het Eric Dolphy Quintet met trompetfenomeen Booker Little. Speciale projecten

Terje Isungset speelt op speciaal voor dit optreden vervaardigde ijsinstrumenten met de Nederlandse Bram Stadhouders op ijsgitaar. De Cubaanse pianist Chucho Valdes en zangeres Omara Portuondo staan voor het eerst samen op het podium. Daarnaast aandacht voor het project Return To Forever IV, waarmee Chick Corea oude tijden doet herleven (in nagenoeg de originele bezetting!). Het internationaal gerenommeerde Metropole Orkest dat het afgelopen jaar nog een Grammy won, speelt met de jonge talenten Rumer en Jonathan Jeremiah. Het befaamde Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra speelt prachtig materiaal van Sinatra met gitarist en vocalist John Pizzarelli. Jazz legends

Highlights Zaterdag 9 juli Tijd voor een nieuwe generatie

North Sea Jazz biedt dit jaar ruimte aan jong talent in verschillende genres. In de grootste zalen staan daar ineens de Franse soulzanger Ben L’Oncle Soul en Selah Sue. Ben is bekend om zijn soulversie van Seven Nation Army; zonnige retrosoul. Nog een bijzonder talent uit Europa: de Belgische zangeres Selah Sue. Met haar aanstekelijke mix van soul, reggae en pop is ze inmiddels een grote naam in het Nederlandse clubcircuit. In Brazilië is zangeres Adriana Calcanhotto een belangrijke artiest en ook in Nederland, waar ze nu voor het eerst met band speelt, is haar faam rijzende. Het Portico Quartet brengt een bijzonder eigenzinnig geluid. Dit kwartet slaat een brug tussen minimal music en moderne jazz en gebruikt daarvoor onder meer een hang; een percussieinstrument dat het midden houdt tussen een gamalan en een steeldrum. Carte Blanche: Kyteman

Vanavond brengt Kyteman het populaire project Kytecrash naar North Sea Jazz. Het is de bijzondere samenwerking tussen Eric Vloeimans, de grootste Nederlandse jazztrompettist van het moment, en Colin Benders, de grootste pop/crossover trompettist. Vloeimans was in het verleden de leraar van Colin. Die tijd is voorbij; de twee zijn inmiddels danig aan elkaar gewaagd en wisten van hun Kytecrash al een succesvol project te maken. Rudresh Mahantappa is Amerikaan, maar een zoon van Indiase immigranten, en die roots zijn veelvuldig te vinden in zijn werk. Zo treedt hij vanavond op met zijn groep

Indo-Pak Coalition, met onder meer de Pakistaanse gitarist Rez Abassi. Het geheel vormt een mix van verschillende muzikale invloeden en culturen, wat zo kenmerkend is voor de jazz van nu. Impulse & John Coltrane

Het befaamde jazzlabel Impulse viert dit jaar met een tentoonstelling zijn 50e verjaardag. De belangrijkste artiest van het label was John Coltrane, en zijn spirit is op het hele festival waarneembaar. Zo is er dit jaar speciale aandacht voor het genre free jazz, waarvan Coltrane één van de grondleggers was. Carte Blanche-artiest Rudresh Mahanthappa geeft aan op zoek te zijn naar de ziel en lyriek zoals Coltrane die in zijn spel had en John McLaughlin liet zich op zijn laatste album inspireren door de geest van Coltrane in A Love Supreme. Verder geeft jazzcriticus Ashley Khan vandaag een lezing over de periode waarin Coltrane opnam voor Impulse. Op zondag is Coltrane’s neef Flying Lotus op het festival aanwezig om te laten horen hoe zijn oom in deze tijd zou hebben geklonken. Net als Coltrane is hij vooruitstrevend en gefascineerd door mystieke klanken en speelt een zeer hedendaagse mix van jazz en elektronica.

Jarreau en Kurt Elling, ontmoeten elkaar vanavond in een programma met het Metropole Orkest. Dat wordt bedreigd in haar voortbestaan door de bezuinigingsplannen van de overheid. Met drie projecten (zie ook de highlights van vrijdag) brengt het festival de kwaliteit van dit orkest onder de aandacht. Sowieso is het een avond voor orkesten, want ook het jazzorkest van het Concertgebouw is te bewonderen en speelt de muziek van Peter Beets. De Deense Klüvers Big Band begeleidt vocalist Kurt Elling, die momenteel hoge ogen gooit met zijn nieuwe album The Gate en daarmee internationaal de covers van nagenoeg alle jazzmagazines siert. Hij geldt als de beste mannelijke vocalist van de afgelopen twee decennia. Vibrafoonlegende Roy Ayers, die al meerdere generaties hip is, staat op één podium met rapper Pete Rock en de jonge jazzpianist Robert Glasper. Glasper speelde met jazzgrootheden als Terence Blanchard en Roy Hargrove, maar wordt ook op handen gedragen in de hiphopscene, waar hij onder meer werkte met Bilal, Erykah Badu en Q-Tip. Highlights Zondag 10 juli Carte Blanche: Kyteman

Kyteman presenteert vanavond The Jamsessions, een project dat speciaal voor North Sea Jazz is opgezet en waarin Colin Benders belooft om alles uit de kast te halen om het begrip muzikale vrijheid nieuwe inhoud te geven. Carte Blanche: Rudresh Mahanthappa

Rudresh is altijd op zoek naar nieuwe uitdrukkingsmogelijkheden voor zijn improvisaties en composities. Hij put uit hedendaagse gecomponeerde muziek, Indiase klassieke muziek, en zowel John Coltrane als Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker. Vandaag speelt hij met zijn new fusion-groep Samdhi, met onder meer David Gilmore op electrische gitaar en Anand Ananthakrishnan op mridangam (een Indiase trommel). Indiase invloeden zijn ook in deze groep te vinden. Electronic jazz

Een muzikaal gebied dat al vele jaren voor interessante geluiden zorgt. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan Flying Lotus met zijn gelaagde

elektronische muziek, die hij brengt met liveband. De Duitse dance-producer en dj Henrik Schwarz werkt samen met Bugge Wesseltoft, de Noorse pianist die dance maakt vanuit een jazz-benadering. Ook zijn hier interessante nieuwe namen toe te voegen. Zoals Hidden Orchestra; als Kruder & Dorfmeister een jazzband zouden formeren, zou die klinken als zij. James Blake is een subtiele geluidstovenaar die een geheel nieuwe mix maakt tussen dance en singersongwriter elementen. Introducing

In het thema Introducing vinden we de vrije spelers; het nieuwe geluid van een generatie in opkomst. Zoals Chris Lightcap, die zorgt voor een eigen frisse fusion-sound met elektronica. Tyshawn Sorey Quartet brengt een compositorisch geluid waarbij in plaats van drums, de sax het ritmisch houvast in de band is. Mary Halvorson is een gitariste die met haar band prachtige nieuwe muziek instant componeert. Haar muziek is volledig geïmproviseerd. The Ambush Party gebruikt de impro uit de jaren zeventig van grondleggers ICP Orchestra, maar brengen die op een hedendaagse manier en met veel humor. Daarmee zetten ze de Nederlandse traditie voort. Speciale projecten

Vanavond wordt een avond van bijzondere

combinaties en samenwerkingen. Jazzlegendes Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter en Marcus Miller, die allen speelden bij Miles Davis, brengen gezamenlijk een tribute aan het jazzfenomeen dat twintig jaar geleden overleed. Drie bijzondere projecten hebben een Mediterraan tintje: Mujeres De Agua is het project van producer Javier Limón, met daarin een aantal van de grootste vocalisten uit de landen rondom de Middellandse zee, waaronder Buika, Eletheria Arvanitaki en Aynur. Het trio van de Tunesische oudspeler Anouar Brahem is een prachtige ontmoeting met de Engelse meesterbassist Dave Holland en saxofonist John Surman. Tea for 3 is een samenwerking tussen drie progressieve trompettisten uit diverse delen van de wereld, die allen de jazztraditie zeer goed kennen: Dave Douglas (VS), Avishai Cohen (Israël), en Enrico Rava (Italië). Snoop Dogg komt met z’n oude maten van Doggystyle, Raul Midón bundelt zijn krachten met die van Richard Bona. Tenslotte delen de twee bekendste balkanorkesten Koc˘ani Orkestar en Taraf de Haïdouks samen een podium. Jazzlegendes

PAUL ACKET AWARD

North Sea Jazz reikt jaarlijks de Paul Acket Award uit aan een artiest die meer aandacht verdient voor zijn of haar uitzonderlijke muzikantschap. De organisatie van North Sea Jazz wil met deze prijs aandacht geven aan getalenteerde jazzmuzikanten die aan het begin van hun carrière staan. Deze muzikanten zijn al bekend en bijzonder gewaardeerd binnen de jazzscene, maar nog niet tot het grote publiek doorgedrongen. Deze ‘Artist Deserving Wider Recognition’ ontvangt naast de fysieke award tevens een cheque ter waarde van € 5,000 die gebruikt kan worden om de carrière van de winnaar te versterken. Daarnaast krijgt de winnaar een uitnodiging om op het North Sea Jazz Festival op te treden, op zaterdag 9 juli. De winnaar van de Paul Acket Award 2011 is de Noorse trompettist Arve Henriksen. Hij speelde bij de hardrockband Motorpsycho en nam platen op met David Sylvian. Momenteel speelt Henriksen met de band Supersilent. Hij bracht zijn eigen album Cartography uit op het label ECM. Op North Sea Jazz speelt hij met Jan Bang en Ingar Zach.

De eerste selectie van kanshebbers voor de award is gemaakt door een jury van vijf mensen uit het werkveld, bestaande uit Bartho van Straaten (Nederland, Paradox Tilburg), Reiner Michalke (Duitsland, Stadtgarten Keulen), Jan Ole (Noorwegen, Molde Jazz Festival), Huub van Riel (Nederland, Bimhuis Amsterdam) en John Cumming (Engeland, London Jazz Festival). Zij kozen de genomineerden, waarop vervolgens een gezelschap van (inter)nationale jazzcritici en programmeurs van jazzfestivals en -clubs hun stem uitbrachten. De artiest met de hoogste waardering werd de winnaar van de Paul Acket Award 2011.

EBU European Jazz Competition

Met trots presenteert het North Sea Jazz Festival de finale van de derde editie van de tweejaarlijkse EBU European Jazz Competition. Dit internationale concours is ontstaan door samenwerking tussen de European Broadcasting Union (EBU), de Stichting European Jazz Competition en het North Sea Jazz Festival. De European Jazz Competition stimuleert de promotie, internationale speelmogelijkheden en identiteit van jong Europees jazztalent. De EBU (Euroradio in Genève) organiseerde eerder dit jaar de voorronden. Aangesloten publieke omroepen uit 16 Europese landen hebben hiervoor groepen aangedragen door recente opnamen in te sturen. Een EBU-jury van jazzproducers uit verschillende Europese landen maakte daaruit ‘blindfolded’ een selectie van vier finalisten. De vijfde groep die tijdens het North Sea Jazz Festival de Europese finale compleet maakt is het Castel/van Damme Quartet, winnaar van de Sena Prijs voor de Beste Groep van de laatste editie van de Dutch Jazz Competition. Elke finalist van de Europese competitie presenteert een volwaardig optreden van 45 minuten. De EBU fungeert als een mediapartner van formaat door via haar netwerk van publieke omroepen Europese radio-uitzendingen van de finale te verzorgen. De winnaar van de Sena Prijs voor de Beste Groep 2011 zal daarnaast ook een geldprijs van € 5000 ontvangen. Verder bieden de partners in de European Jazz Competition de winnaar ondersteuning bij het vinden van optredens op belangrijke internationale jazz festivals en andere essentiële evenementen. De winnaar van de NORMA Prijs voor de Beste Solist ontvangt een aanmoedigingscheque van € 2000,-.

Compositieopdracht North Sea Jazz Muziek Centrum Nederland en het North Sea Jazz Festival verstrekken in samenwerking met het Fonds Podiumkunsten een vrije compositieopdracht aan een jonge en veelbelovende Nederlandse jazzcomponist. Dit jaar is dat altsaxofonist en basgitarist Dirk Bruinsma, die de gelegenheid aangrijpt om met zijn band PumpOrgan nieuw werk uit te voeren met de titel Hijinks & Jitters. Dirk Bruinsma heeft zich laten inspireren door dansmuziek, in het bijzonder gericht op de energieke kracht van rhythm and blues, rock ’n roll en swing. Voor zijn band draait het in de eerste plaats om de ongepolijste structuur en de basis elementen van deze genres. De kunst van Pumporgan bestaat dan ook uit het fuseren van dissonantie en ritmische complexiteit met de overwegend tonale en op puls gebaseerde dansmuziek. “De reden dat zowel rhythm and blues, rock ’n roll en swing als dansmuziek nog steeds actueel en aantrekkelijk zijn, komt naar mijn mening door het gebruik van een aantal oerprincipes uit de muziek. Het gaat erom een directe uitdrukking te geven aan emoties”, aldus Bruinsma. Deze directheid en dat bijna instinctieve heeft hij verbonden aan diezelfde kwaliteiten van de improvisatievormen binnen de muziek. Op vrijdag 9 juli vindt in de zaal Yenisei de prèmiere plaats van de door Dirk Bruinsma uitgevoerde compositieopdracht.

KUNST OP NSJ muziek als bron van inspiratie

Music Inspired Art selecteerde kunstenaars en fotografen die muziek als hun belangrijkste inspiratiebron kozen. Dit jaar met speciale aandacht voor de North Sea Jazz-foto’s van de Duitse fotograaf Raphael Sprenger en de installaties en tekeningen van jazz/ hip-hop kunstenaar DEES. Nieuw zijn ook de jazzschilderijen van de Spaans-Nederlandse schilder Bo Woody Winter. Vanwege het grote succes vorig jaar presenteert MIA nieuwe ‘branderijen’ van Marco Goudriaan en bronzen van Rogier Ruys. Op de derde etage is een speciale ruimte gereserveerd voor Rotterdamse jazzhistorie, onder meer met een presentatie over Rotterdamse jazzcoryfeëen van RJAM en jazzfoto’s uit het oude LantarenVenster van Joke Schot en Henk Visser.

Op diezelfde etage vindt u ook de tentoonstelling 50 Jaar Impulse Records. Sinds de oprichting in 1961 was het artwork een belangrijk onderdeel van het label. Op North Sea Jazz ziet u iconische albumcovers en foto’s van de muzikale geschiedenis van Impulse, vastgelegd door hoffotograaf Chuck Stewart.

Tentoonstelling ALS EERBETOON AAN Paul Acket Paul Acket en het North Sea Jazz Festival: twee namen die onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. Hij was de uitgever van diverse muziektijdschriften en bracht als impresario diverse pop- en jazzbands en -artiesten naar de Nederlandse podia. In 1974 verkocht hij zijn tijdschriften om een nieuwe droom te verwezenlijken: het North Sea Jazz Festival. De eerste editie vond plaats in 1976 en met toewijding en passie voor de jazz heeft Acket ervoor gezorgd dat het festival wereldwijd een begrip werd. Afgelopen najaar werd zijn veelomvattende archief overgedragen aan Muziek Centrum Nederland. Naar aanleiding hiervan is dit jaar op het festival een tentoonstelling te zien. Deze gaat over een belangrijk stuk van de Nederlandse muziekgeschiedenis en is een eerbetoon aan Paul Acket. De tentoonstelling is vanaf 24 juni ook te zien in de bibliotheek van Rotterdam. Locatie

Winnend ontwerp Sanja de Vries op North Sea Jazz Art poster Ieder jaar organiseren het North Sea Jazz Festival en de Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam een ontwerpwedstrijd voor studenten: de North Sea Jazz Art postercompetitie. Dit jaar is de winnaar Sanja de Vries. De jury koos haar ontwerp vanwege het vernieuwende, speelse karakter ervan. Bovendien straalt de poster de bravoure uit die ook in jazz zo krachtig aanwezig is. Het vrolijke, speelse aspect van jazz komt in de poster ijzersterk naar voren. Het ontwerp wordt één met de muziek vanwege een uiterst herkenbaar jazzinstrument: de trompet.

North Sea Jazz for Kids Al voor het ‘grote’ festival vindt op zondag 3 juli het North Sea Jazz Festival for Kids plaats: een feestelijk festival speciaal voor kinderen. Boordevol muziek, dans, instrumenten maken, improvisatie en vooral veel plezier! JazzBabar

JazzBabar is een speciale voorstelling van Frank Groothof. Hij vertelt op interactieve wijze een ontroerend verhaal over een olifantje dat allerlei avonturen beleeft. Groothof speelt in op de live-tekeningen van Gerard de Bruyne en de swingende jazzcompositie van Marius Beets, uiteraard live gespeeld. Op deze manier ontstaat er een unieke vorm van interactie tussen Frank, de kinderen, de muziek en de tekenaar.

Concerten, improviseren en dansen

Maak kennis met jazzmuziek tijdens de workshop ‘Jazz en improviseren’ van Jazz4kids. Je kunt zelfs aan het eind van de dag je improvisatiekunsten tonen tijdens een echt optreden voor de bezoekers! Let op: voor deze workshop moet je je van tevoren inschrijven door een mailtje met je naam en leeftijd te sturen naar kids@northseajazz.nl. Vermeld daarin ook even of je een eigen instrument meeneemt. Verder bouwt dansgoeroe Carlos Rocha een prachtig feestje. Daarbij kun je lekker dansen, maar ook groovy ritmes maken op

geïmproviseerde percussie-instrumenten. Zo ervaar je op speelse wijze hoe het is om te dansen op een ritme en hoe het is als je zelf dat ritme aangeeft. Diverse jonge jazztalenten verzorgen optredens. Onder begeleiding van Bert van Bommel kun je je eigen muziekinstrument maken om daar vervolgens samen met andere kinderen heerlijk muziek mee te maken. Je kunt zelfs meedoen aan een muziekoptocht met je eigengemaakte instrument!

Natalie Cole opent festival in stijl Het North Sea Jazz Gala, dé opening van het North Sea Jazz Festival, vindt dit jaar plaats in Ahoy in Rotterdam. Zangeres Natalie Cole geeft daar op donderdag 7 juli het muzikale startschot voor de zesde Rotterdamse editie. Vocal jazzlegende Natalie Cole keert na maar liefst zeventien jaar terug naar Nederland om met een spetterende show het begin in te luiden van het North Sea Jazz Festival 2011. Cole maakte haar zangdebuut toen ze zes jaar oud was, op het kerstalbum van haar vader Nat ‘King’ Cole. Na tientallen albums kan wel worden gesteld dat Natalie Cole een fenomeen is. Ze heeft in haar carrière meerdere grote hits uitgebracht, zoals This Will Be (An Everlasting Love), Inseparable, Our Love, I’ve Got Love On My Mind, Pink Cadillac en Miss You Like Crazy. In 1991 kwam Natalie Coles bestverkochte album Unforgettable… With Love uit, een eerbetoon aan haar vader.

Daarvoor ontving ze zes Grammys, waaronder Album Van Het Jaar. De cd stond vijf weken op nummer 1; in de VS werden acht miljoen exemplaren verkocht. Bedachtzaam heeft Natalie ervoor gekozen het succes van dit album niet uit te buiten, maar zich in plaats daarvan te wijden aan allerlei andere projecten, zoals haar autobiografie. In 2009 verscheen Still Unforgettable. Dit 21ste studioalbum van Cole leverde haar wederom meerdere Grammy’s op. Op het North Sea Jazz Gala zal Natalie Cole samen met haar band eindelijk weer stralen op een Nederlands podium. De tentoonstelling Colours in My Hand van de Japanse kunstenares Ayako Rokkaku (1982) is deze zomer te zien in de Kunsthal Rotterdam. Drie weken lang werkt Rokkaku dagelijks aan een kunstwerk ‘in progress’. Speciaal voor de Kunsthal maakt zij grote wandschilderingen, ‘live paintings’, door met blote handen acrylverf direct op het doek aan te brengen. Via een webcam is Rokkaku tijdens haar werkperiode voortdurend te volgen, van de voorbereidingen voor het schilderen tot en met de ontwikkeling en realisatie van de kunstwerken.

Fijnproevers welkom op North Sea Round Town Heel Rotterdam staat vanaf vrijdag 24 juni tot en met zondag 10 juli in het teken van jazz, met als muzikaal hoogtepunt het weekend van North Sea Jazz in Ahoy. De zesde editie van het stadsbrede jazzfestival North Sea Round Town biedt bezoekers ruim 150 concerten, tentoonstellingen, masterclasses, lezingen, jamsessies, straatoptredens en afterparty’s. Naast jazzgrootheden is er ook veel ruimte voor de jonge garde en voor spontane jamsessies. De aftrap van North Sea Round Town vindt plaats op 24 juni tijdens de Jazzdag, hét netwerkevenement voor jazzminnend Nederland, dit jaar voor het eerst in Rotterdam. Op de Jazzdag worden meer dan duizend nationale en internationale jazzprofessionals verwacht in de Maasstad. Ook kunt u vrijdag en zaterdag gebruikmaken van de reguliere nachtbussen (BOB-bus) die naar diverse bestemmingen in en rond Rotterdam rijden. Zo is er op maandag 29 augustus een gratis concert van Los Van Van op het Brionplein. Op donderdag geeft pianiste Eliane Elias een optreden in Brakkeput Mei Mei, daarnaast zijn er shows in het Avila Hotel en op Mambo Beach.

Naast het bekende festival in Nederland bestaat sinds vorig jaar ook Curaçao North Sea Jazz. De eerste editie werd afgelopen nazomer gehouden en was een daverend succes. De tropische sferen, een uitgelaten publiek en goede muziek bleken een gouden combinatie. Genoeg reden voor een vervolg, en wel op 2 en 3 september aanstaande. Het programma voor Curaçao North Sea Jazz 2011 ziet er alweer imponerend uit. Op vrijdag 2 september kan het publiek genieten van klinkende namen als Sting, Chic featuring Nile Rodgers, Earth, Wind & Fire, Terence Blanchard and Poncho, Sanchez, Danilo Pérez Trio en Levi Silvanie. De zaterdag, 3 september, belooft een even groot feest te worden met onder meer Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Juan Luis Guerra, Chucho Valdes & Afro Cuban

Net als vorig jaar wordt het festival gehouden bij het World Trade Center bij Piscadera Bay. In 2010 maakten daar internationale artiesten als Natalie Cole, Lionel Richie, George Benson, Sergio Mendes, John Legend en Simply Red de eerste editie van Curaçao North Sea Jazz een groot succes. As of last year, besides the famous festival in the Netherlands there’s also Curacao North Sea Jazz. The first edition was held in the late summer of 2010 and was a smashing success. The tropical atmosphere, an enthusiastic audience and good music turned out to be a golden combination. Reason enough to organize a follow-up, which will take place on September 2 and 3. The line-up for Curacao North Sea Jazz 2011 is looking impressive. On Friday September 2nd, visitors can enjoy renowned artists like Sting, Chic featuring Nile Rodgers, Earth, Wind & Fire, Terence Blanchard and Poncho, Sanchez, Danilo Pérez Trio and Levi Silvanie. On the Saturday, the party is on with acts including Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Juan Luis Guerra, Chucho Valdes & Afro Cuban Messengers, Ruben Blades, Roberto Fonseca en Ronchi Matthew.

The fun in Curacao starts even earlier with a free concert by Los Van Van at Brionplein on Monday August 29. Pianist Eliane Elias will play a show at Brakkeput on Thursday and there will also be performances in the Avila Hotel and on Mambo Beach. Welcome to North Sea Jazz! The 36th edition of the North Sea Jazz festival promises to be a huge event, like always. This year you can enjoy performers like Natalie Cole, Ahmad Jamal, The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and special unions between Al Jarreau, Jon Hendricks with the Metropole Orkest and a ‘Tribute to Miles’ by Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. The festival is known worldwide as the place where the past, present and future of jazz can be enjoyed within three days. The multitude of musical styles being played ensures everybody finding something to their taste. History

The North Sea Jazz festival started in 1976 in The Hague with three hundred performing artists divided over six halls. The first edition attracted nine thousand visitors, who enjoyed performances by legendary musicians like Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. In 2006, the festival moved to its current, bigger, location in Rotterdam. This year, the organisation expects more than a thousand musicians, spread out over 150 performances and thirteen different stages. Though the numbers of visitors were between 65.000 and 70.000 in recent years, the festival still manages to retain its intimate character.

Eat, drink, shop

Apart from world class music, North Sea Jazz also offers quality in food and drinks. You can find anything from Thai curries to Italian pizzas and from beers to tropical cocktails at the various food stands. To pay for food and drinks you’ll need special tokens, which can be bought at the desk in the entrance hall and at token machines (payable by cash card). At the end of the festival, you can return unused tokens for a refund at the desk near the exit. Shopping for records, books, magazines, musical instruments and much more can be done at stands found at different locations. Original North Sea Jazz items such as T-shirts, bags and posters are for sale at several merchandise stands. 2011: Focus on new talent!

We are living in vital times where it comes to jazz in its many forms, with many interesting artists giving the style new impulses. That is the reason North Sea Jazz decided to pay young talent much attention this year. For example: instead of appointing one experienced Artist In Residence, two young artists have been given the title Carte Blanche and will be present on all three days. North Sea Jazz on radio, television and online

As always, Dutch channel NTR (previously NPS) will be broadcasting live from North Sea Jazz. Their recordings, as well as reports and interviews with artists can be followed on Radio 6, tv-channels Nederland 2 and 3 and online via www.radio6.nl.

The North Sea Jazz gala, the grand opening of the North Sea Jazz festival, will take place in Ahoy Rotterdam this year. Singer Natalie Cole will kick off the sixth Rotterdam edition of the festival on Thursday July 7. Vocal jazz legend Natalie Cole will return to The Netherlands after an absence of seventeen years, to mark the start of the North Sea Jazz festival 2011 with an amazing show. Cole debuted when she was six years old, on the Christmas album of her father Nat ‘King’ Cole. Her long career brought her many hitsingles like This Will Be (An Everlasting Love), Inseparable, Our Love, I’ve Got Love On My Mind, Pink Cadillac and Miss You Like Crazy. In 1991, Cole released her best-selling album Unforgettable… With Love, a tribute to her father. She received no less than six Grammy’s, among which for Record Of The Year. The cd remained at number 1 for five weeks and sold eight million copies in the US alone. In 2009, Still Unforgettable was released. Her 21st studio album, it again brought Cole several Grammy’s. At the North Sea Jazz Gala, Natalie Cole, together with her band, will finally shine again on a Dutch stage. This is your chance to celebrate the kick-off of the festival in style! The sixth edition of the city’s event North Sea Round Town offers its public more than 150 concerts, exhibits, masterclasses, lectures, jam sessions, street performances and afterparties. Friday July 8 Time for a new generation

We live in a time that is vital to jazz in all its appearances: there are many interesting artists who give the genre new artistic impulses. In mainstream jazz, strong names have found an audience in a short time span, and in genres leaning towards jazz the same tendency can be seen. The career of English vocalist Rumer has taken off like a rocket and soul/pop singer Janelle Monáe can already fill up a large venue. Tonight we will see jazz singer Esperanza Spalding perform with her Chamber Music Society. She was recently awarded the much sought-after Grammy for Best New Artist, leaving many mainstream artists behind. The North Sea Jazz Festival is giving a lot of space to young talent this year. For this reason there was no Artist in Residence selected for this edition. Instead, two young musicians will be given “Carte Blanche”: Colin Benders a.k.a. Kyteman, and Rudresh Mahanthappa. They will be present on all three festival days.

Colin Benders, also known as Kyteman, came, saw and conquered the Dutch jazz scene. These past years, he was the most talkedabout young artist, operating on the interface between jazz and pop music. Within a year he, together with his Hiphop Orchestra, went from the club circuit in provincial Utrecht to a sold-out Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. With his immense versatility, he deserves a large venue at the festival. Tonight, Colin Benders has invited his uncle Jacky Terrasson to North Sea Jazz. Terje Isungset will play on ice instruments made especially for his performance at the festival. Dutchman Bram Stadhouders will accompany him on ice guitar. Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes and vocalist Omara Portuondo will be on stage together for the first time. There will also be attention for the project Return To Forever IV, for which Chick Corea will relive old times (with an almost complete original lineup!). The internationally renowned Metropole Orkest, that won a Grammy only last year, will perform with the young talents Rumer and Jonathan Jeremiah. And the famed Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra will play beautiful material by Sinatra, in cooperation with guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli. Jazz legends

Saturday July 9 Time for the new generation

North Sea Jazz makes room for young talent in various genres. In the larger venues we can meet French soul singer Ben L‘Oncle Soul and Belgian Selah Sue. Ben is known for his soul version of Seven Nation Army: sunny retro-soul. Another special European talent: the Belgian female vocalist Selah Sue. With her contagious mix of soul, reggae and pop she has made a name for herself in the Dutch club circuit. Singer Adriana Calcanhotto is an important artist in Brazil. In the Netherlands, where she will perform for the very first time, her fame is on the rise. The Portico Quartet play with their singular sound. The quartet bridges the gap between minimal music and modern jazz and makes use of the “hang”, a percussion instrument somewhere between an Indonesian gamelan and a steel drum. Carte Blanche: Colin Benders alias Kyteman

Tonight, Kyteman will bring the popular project Kytecrash to North Sea Jazz. It is a very special collaboration between Eric Vloeimans, Holland’s greatest jazz trumpet player of this era, and Colin Benders, the greatest pop/cross-over trumpeter. Vloeimans used to be Colin’s teacher. But those days are over: both performers are well up to the challenge and were able to make Kytecrash a successful project already. Rudresh Mahantappa is American by birth, but a son to Indian immigrants, and his roots can be heard extensively in his work. This evening, he will perform with his group IndoPak Coalition that includes Pakistan guitarist Rez Abassi, among others. The entire group

Impulse & John Coltrane

The famous jazz label Impulse celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with a celebratory exhibition. The label’s most significant artist was John Coltrane, and his spirit can be felt all over the festival. There will be special attention for free jazz, the genre partly founded by Coltrane. “Carte Blanche” performer Rudresh Mahantappa indicates he is searching for the soulful and lyrical quality of Coltrane’s playing, and John McLaughlin was inspired by the spirit of the sax player in A Love Supreme for his latest album. Jazz critic Ashley Khan will give a lecture about the period in which Coltrane made recordings with Impulse. On Sunday, Coltrane’s nephew, Flying Lotus, will attend the festival to demonstrate how his great-uncle would have sounded today. Just like Coltrane himself, he is an innovator and fascinated by mystical sounds, and he plays a highly contemporary blend of jazz and electronic music.

orchestra is being threatened in its existence due to the plans for cutbacks by the Dutch government. North Sea Jazz wants to offer their support by giving the orchestra three projects (see also: Friday highlights). You could say tonight is orchestra night. The Concertgebouw jazz orchestra will perform music by Peter Beets. The Danish Klüvers Big Band will accompany singer Kurt Elling, who is currently doing very well with his latest album, The Gate, as is evident from his appearance on almost all covers of international jazz magazines. He is regarded as the best male vocalist of the past two decades. Vibraphone legend Roy Ayers, who has been hip for many generations now, will be joined onstage by rapper Pete Rock and young jazz pianist Robert Glasper. The latter has performed with jazz legends like Terence Blanchard and Roy Hargrove, but is also regarded highly by the hiphop scene, where he has worked with Bilal, Erykah Badu and Q-Tip, among others.

Schwarz works together with Bugge Wesseltoft, the Norwegian pianist who makes dance music with a jazzy approach. Other interesting new names have been added, such as the Hidden Orchestra. If Kruder & Dormeister were to form a jazz band, they would sound like this band. And, last but not least, James Blake, who is a subtle sound magician making an entirely new blend of dance with singersongwriter elements.

Introducing

Rudresh is always on the lookout for new ways to improvise and express his compositions. He finds inspiration in contemporary composed music and classical Indian music, as well as in the music of John Coltrane and Charlie “Bird” Parker. Today he will perform with his new fusion band Samdhi, including David Gilmore on electrical guitar and Anand Ananthakrishnan on mridangam (an Indian drum). Indian influences can also be heard in the group.

Tonight, in Introducing, some free players; the new sounds of a generation on the rise. Like Chris Lightcap for example, with his fresh fusion sound combined with electronics. The Tyshawn Sorey Quartet will bring compositions with the saxophone as the rhythmic backbone, instead of the drums. Guitarist Mary Halvorson, accompanied by her own band, makes beautiful music that she composes instantly. Het work is fully improvised. The Ambush Party make use of 1970s improv, taken from founders ICP Orchestra, but perform it in a modern way, using a lot of humor. In doing so, they continue a Dutch tradition.

Electronic jazz

A musical area that has been producing many interesting sounds for many years. Flying Lotus, for instance, will perform his layered electronic music, accompanied by his live band. German dance producer and dj Hendrik

Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Marcus Miller, who have all played with Miles Davis, will together bring a tribute to the jazz phenomenon that died twenty years ago today. Three remarkable projects have a Mediterranean sound: Mujeres De Agua is a project by producer Javier Limón, including some of the greatest vocalists from nations bordering the Mediterranean Sea, including Buika, Eletheria Arvanitaki and Aynur. The trio of Tunesian oud player Anouar Brahem is host to a wonderful encounter of English master bass player Dave Holland and sax player John Surman. Tea for 3 is a collaboration of three progressive trumpeters from various parts of the world, who all are very familiar with the traditions of jazz: Dave Douglas (US), Avishai Cohen (Israel), and Enrico Rava (Italy). Snoop Dogg will return with his old buddies of Doggystyle, and Raul Midón will join forces with Richard Bona. And, finally, the two most famous Balkan orchestras, Koc˘ani Orkestar and Taraf de Haïdouks, will perform together. Jazz legends

PAUL ACKET AWARD The Paul Acket Award is presented to an artist deserving wider recognition for their extraordinary musicianship. With this prize, North Sea Jazz wants to present talented jazz musicians who are at the beginning of their career. They are already known and very much respected within the jazz scene, but not yet recognized by a wide audience. The winner of the Paul Acket Award 2011 is Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen. He played with hardrock band Motorpsycho and recorded with David Sylvian. He also made his own album Cartography on the ECM label.

Arve Henriksen will perform at the North Sea Jazz festival with Jan Bang and Ingar Zach on Saturday July 9.

COMPOSITION ASSIGNMENT Each year, the North Sea Jazz Festival commissions a promising Dutch jazz composer to write a free composition. This year, altsaxophonist and bass guitarist Dirk Bruinsma gets to perform his new work Hijinks &Jitters at the festival together with his band PumpOrgan. Bruinsma has a background in avantgardist rock and jazz and is influenced by dance music, especially directed towards the energetic power of rhythm and blues, rock ’n roll and swing. The composition assignment is commissioned in collaboration with Music Centre The Netherlands and the Fund for the Performing Arts.

The new composition assigmnment written by Dirk Bruinsma will premiere on Saturday July 9 in the Yenisei hall.

EBU EUROPEAN JAZZ COMPETITION The North Sea Jazz Festival is proud to present the finals of the EBU European Jazz Competition’s third edition. This international concourse was made possible by the cooperation between the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the Dutch Foundation of the European Jazz Competition and the North Sea Jazz Festival.

The Paul Acket Award 2011 is supported by the BNP Paribas Foundation. This Foundation has been active for over 15 years in developing the careers of jazz musicians, by supporting their recordings and concerts.

The European Jazz Competition offers worldwide support in the promotion, increase of the international appearances and identity of European jazz talent. All five finalists gets to present performances of 45 minutes, which will take place on Saturday July 9 in the Volga hall between 6 and 11 PM. The winners will be anounced at midnight. The winner of the SENA Award for Best Group will be offered a cheque of € 5000.-. Further on, this group receives support of the partners of the European Jazz Competition in finding participation at essential international

jazz festivals and other major music events. The winner of the NORMA Award for Best Soloist will receive an encouraging € 2000.-. MORE INFORMATION

Art at North Sea Jazz Inspired by music The Music Inspired Art Foundation selected artists and photographers that take music as their basic source of inspiration for this year’s art show. Photographs of German photographer Raphael Sprenger are highlighted, as well as installations and drawings of DEES, a Dutch jazz-hiphop artist. There are jazz paintings of Dutch/Spanish painter Bo Woody Winter and because of last year’s success, burnt wood plaques by Marco Goudriaan and bronzes by Rogier Ruys are back.

On the fourth floor you’ll find our Historical Rotterdam jazz-corner with photos from the sixties up till now and a presentation of the RJAM Foundation. Special sections will be reserved for the exhibit celebrating the 50th anniversary of Impulse Records. Art Poster Competition

Paul Acket Exhibit Paul Acket was the founder of the North Sea Jazz festival in 1976. Originally a magazine publisher, Acket sold his business to focus on the festival, which he made a worldwide known event. His immense archive of pictures was tranfered to Music Centre The Netherlands last year. The exhibit shows an important part of Dutch music history and is a tribute to Acket. As of June 24, it will also be shown in the Rotterdam Library. The exhibit can be visited at fast lane

The North Sea Jazz Art Poster Competition is organized among students at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. This year’s winner is Sanja de Vries. The jury chose her design because of its refreshing and playful character. The poster displays the swankiness also found in jazz. The design becomes one with the music due to a recognizable instrument: the trumpet.
