VOORWOORD Allereerst hartelijk welkom op het Port of Rotterdam North Sea Jazz Festival 2014! De editie van vorig jaar was er eentje om in te lijsten. Werkelijk alles leek mee te zitten en iedereen had er zin in: artiesten, publiek en ook de weergoden lieten zich van hun beste kant zien. Dat resulteerde in drie prachtige festivaldagen die ik niet snel zal vergeten. Maar van al te lang nagenieten is geen sprake, want zodra de laatste noten in Ahoy hadden geklonken, begonnen wij alweer aan NSJ 2014. De eerste artiesten, ideeën en plannen dienden zich al vroeg aan en het voorlopige resultaat kunt u bewonderen in deze brochure. Eerlijk is eerlijk, een succesvolle editie heeft ook een keerzijde: het was druk en vol. Daarom is het creëren van ruimte en comfort voor het publiek en het aanpakken van de knelpunten in de logistiek een absolute prioriteit voor NSJ 2014. Hoewel wij op dit moment nog keihard bezig zijn met de organisatie van de nieuwe editie in Rotterdam, kijken we stiekem ook verder. Zo viert ons zusterfestival, Curaçao North Sea Jazz, op 29 en 30 augustus haar eerste lustrum. Om dit feestelijk jubileum te vieren maken enkele publiekslievelingen van vorige edities opnieuw hun opwachting. Daarnaast hebben we uiteraard ook bijzondere 'nieuwe' gasten!

Welkom bij North Sea Jazz! Rotterdam staat hartje juli weer bol van de goede muziek. Op 11, 12 en 13 juli verwelkomt Ahoy de 39e editie van het wereldberoemde Port of Rotterdam North Sea Jazz Festival, dat dit jaar alweer voor de negende keer plaatsvindt in de havenstad. North Sea Jazz is het grootste indoor muziekspektakel ter wereld en staat binnen én buiten onze landsgrenzen bekend als het evenement waar in drie dagen het verleden, heden én de toekomst van de jazz langskomen. Naast die stevige basis van jazz komen veel genres voorbij, zoals blues, soul, funk, hiphop, world, pop en nog veel meer. De grootste namen beklimmen de podia van het festival, en tegelijk ontdekt menig bezoeker er nieuwe favorieten. Voor elk wat wils dus, en dat is dit jaar niet anders. Zo kunnen de echte jazzliefhebbers alvast uitzien naar optredens van Artist In Residence Christian McBride, het Metropole Orkest dat jazzcomposities van

Quincy Jones ten gehore brengt - maar ook optreedt in combinatie met Joshua Redman en Robert Glasper - en Dave Holland met zijn project PRISM. Fans van andere muziekgenres halen straks hun hart op bij optredens van Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams, Mavis Staples en Outkast. Maar dat is slechts een héél klein voorproefje van wat het festival dit jaar allemaal te bieden heeft. Rijke geschiedenis

Het festival begon in 1976 in het Nederlands Congresgebouw in Den Haag. Destijds traden driehonderd muzikanten op in zes zalen. De eerste editie trok negenduizend

bezoekers, die konden genieten van optredens van grootheden als Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie, Stan Getz en Dizzy Gillespie. Door de jaren heen zijn de jazzlegendes blijven komen, en breidde het festival zich steeds meer uit. In 2006 verhuisde North Sea Jazz naar de huidige locatie: het Rotterdamse Ahoy. Daar verwacht de organisatie dit jaar ruim duizend muzikanten, verdeeld over bijna 150 optredens en twaalf podia. Ook de bezoekersaantallen zijn tijdens het bestaan flink gestegen en lagen de laatste jaren tussen de 65.000 en 70.000 mensen. Toch blijft het festival zijn intieme en gezellige karakter houden.

Eten en drinken

Op het festival is het niet alleen genieten van prachtige muziek, maar ook van heerlijk eten en drinken. Van Thaise curry’s tot pizza en alle wereldgerechten er tussenin, van bier tot tropische cocktails: u vindt talloze lekkernijen bij de vele horecagelegenheden. Net als vorig jaar strijkt een tijdelijke vestiging van twee sterrenrestaurant De Zwethheul neer op North Sea Jazz, waar topkok Mario Ridder zijn bezoekers culinaire hoogstandjes voorschotelt. Ook de in Amsterdam gevestigde North Sea Jazz Club richt voor de gelegenheid een filiaal

in op het festival, waar bezoekers kunnen genieten van dinerconcerten. Nieuw is de in Rotterdam en omstreken ‘wereldberoemde’ hotdogstand van Hans Worst. Een volledig overzicht van alle aanwezige horeca is te vinden op www.northseajazz.com/horeca. Bij alle stands kunt u betalen met speciale festivalmunten, die te verkrijgen zijn bij de balie in de entreehal en bij uitgiftemachines op verschillende locaties (betaling met pin). De munten kunnen tot het einde van het festival geretourneerd worden aan de kassa bij de uitgang.

Winkelen

Winkelen kan naar hartenlust op North Sea Jazz. U vindt shops en stands op verschillende locaties, met daarin alles van uw gading: elpees en cd’s, boeken en tijdschriften, muziekinstrumenten, sieraden, kleding en kunst. De populaire North Sea Jazz merchandise zoals T-shirts, posters en nog veel meer is te koop in speciale stands. Daar zijn ook de meeste recente tijdsschema’s en de Who’s Who Festival Guide te verkrijgen.

Highlights Vrijdag 11 juli Elk jaar zet de organisatie van North Sea Jazz per festivaldag een aantal bijzondere optredens in de schijnwerpers. Op deze vrijdag: de introductie van de Artist In Residence, een befaamd platenlabel viert haar jubileum en enkele buitengewone performers.

Christian McBride

Artist in residence: Christian McBride

Christian McBride is dit jaar Artist in Residence omdat hij geldt als een van de steunpilaren in de hedendaagse jazz. Hij speelde de afgelopen twintig jaar regelmatig op North Sea Jazz, maar slechts één keer met zijn eigen groep. Als een van de beste en meest gevraagde bassisten was hij altijd op pad met musici als Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, The Roots en Sting. Vanavond speelt hij straight-ahead jazz van het allerhoogste niveau met het prachtige kwintet Inside Straight, met daarin het veelbelovende talent Warren Wulf (vibrafoon). McBride heeft in de VS een eigen radioprogramma, The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian McBride, waarin hij gesprekken voert met musici van zijn keuze. Op het festival voert hij dergelijke gesprekken ook; zij worden elke dag afgesloten met een klein duo-optreden.

Quincy Jones

Quincy Jones is vooral bekend als producer van Michael Jacksons succesalbum Thriller. Hij begon zijn carrière echter in de jazz, als arrangeur bij onder meer Count Basie. Later speelde hij trompet bij Lionel Hampton en Dizzy Gillespie. In Parijs studeerde hij compositie bij Nadia Boulanger en produceerde en arrangeerde voor onder meer Jacques Brel. Eind jaren ’50 nam Jones op met zijn eigen big band. Een groot deel van deze partituren raakte zoek, totdat de Finse componist en arrangeur Vellu Halkosalmi tien jaar geleden besloot deze opnieuw uit te schrijven, aan de hand van de beschikbare opnamen en met hulp van de meester zelf. Op het festival wordt Jones geëerd door de Metropole Orkest Big Band, die een aantal van deze arrangementen uitvoert. Tevens presenteert Jones zelf drie van zijn protegés: Nikki Yanofsky, Alfredo Rodriguez en Andreas Varady. 75 years of Blue Note

Blue Note Records viert op North Sea Jazz vandaag haar 75e verjaardag met concerten van de hedendaagse top: Gregory Porter, Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge en Paul Acket Awardwinnaar Ambrose Akinmusire. Het iconische jazzlabel bracht gedurende haar hele geschiedenis jazzplaten van hoge kwaliteit uit en blijft dat doen. Zelfs in een krimpende markt brengt Blue Note geen willekeur aan artiesten en stijlen maar omvat continu de artiesten die daadwerkelijk hun stempel zetten op de jazz. Ook de meest veelbelovende artiesten van de jongste generatie hebben bij het label onderdak geworden. Naast de concerten is er een fotoexpositie van Blue Note huisfotograaf Jimmy Katz in de Mekong zaal.

Pharrell Williams

Het afgelopen jaar domineerde Pharrell Williams de hitlijsten. Hij was betrokken bij drie nummer 1 hits en bracht zijn tweede album onder eigen naam uit, Girl. Op de songs Get Lucky van Daft Punk en Blurred Lines van Robin Thicke verzorgde Pharrell de gastvocalen en zijn eigen single Happy stond overal hoog in de charts. Pharrell fungeert al zeker vijftien jaar als een invloedrijk producer en werkte met vele klinkende namen, onder meer als de helft van het producersduo The Neptunes. Hij was ook de drijvende kracht achter N.E.R.D. Op het festival staan verschillende artiesten met wie hij de laatste jaren werkte, zoals Paloma Faith, Nile Rodgers en Robin Thicke.

…is dat ze zichzelf steeds blijft vernieuwen. Meermaals herkende een vorige generatie liefhebbers zich niet meer in de ‘nieuwe’ jazz, zoals eerder met de komst van bebop en free jazz. En weer is er een kentering in

de jazz waarbij een jonge generatie in rap tempo zorgt voor muziek die anders klinkt dan voorheen, binnen de vele varianten die de muziekstijl inmiddels kent. Ze bindt daarbij ook gelijk een nieuw en groot publiek

Artist in residence: Christian McBride

Artist In Residence Christian McBride treedt vanavond op met zijn big band. Bijzonder, want het orkest was nooit eerder te zien in Nederland, al konden bezoekers op Curaçao North Sea Jazz er vorig jaar al mee kennismaken. Voor zijn allereerste album met de Christian McBride Big Band, The Good Feeling uit 2011, won de bassist meteen een Grammy Award voor Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance. Nieuwe fusion

Fusion is niet zozeer een genre, maar staat voor een onderscheidende aanpak; het mengen van een verscheidenheid aan stijlen, het gebruik van complexe maatsoorten, uitgebreide, vaak instrumentale composities, lange (groeps)improvisaties en een enorm hoog niveau van instrumentbeheersing. In Maas en Congo presenteert North Sea Jazz op zaterdag een nieuwe lichting fusion artiesten en groepen: Tigran Quintet, Snarky Puppy & Friends, Dirty Loops, Ibrahim Maalouf en Katché, Bona, DiBatista, Legnini. Net als de jazzrock- en jazzfunk-groepen in de jaren ‘70 brengen zij veelal instrumentale jazz met funk, R&B en rock-invloeden, voorzien van een stevige groove en een modern nieuw geluid.

X, XL, XXL

Groot, groter, grootst: onder de noemer XXL biedt de Darling op zaterdag onderdak aan uiteenlopende big bands en orkesten. Met naast de Christian McBride Big Band, waarin een aantal bekende Nederlandse jazzmuzikanten plaatsneemt, ook het toonaangevende Noorse Trondheim Jazz Orchestra met als speciale gast saxofoontalent Marius Neset. The Bridge is de titel van het bijzondere gezamenlijke project van de Braziliaanse singer-songwriter en popster Lenine en de Nederlandse componist, arrangeur en orkestleider Martin Fondse. De avond wordt spectaculair afgesloten door Sun Ra Centennial Dream Arkestra. Sun Ra stond bekend om zijn kosmisch afro-futuristische filosofie en zijn fenomenale composities en concerten, die verlichting en vrede predikten. De in 1993 overleden bandleider werd 100 jaar geleden geboren. Daarom is het nog steeds optredende Arkestra dit jaar uitgebreid tot een enorm orkest, dat uitgedost in bijzondere kleding een concert brengt vol spontane muzikale gekte, doorspekt met soul en jazz. De band staat onder leiding van saxofonist Marshall Allen, die sinds 1958 deel uitmaakt van de groep en na Sun Ra’s dood het stokje overnam. Ook nu nog is Sun Ra een inspiratie voor veel muzikanten, zowel in de jazzscene als in de hiphop en funk. Sing Me The Songs

Singer-songwriters die een duidelijke link hebben naar de jazz, dat is het overkoepelende thema in de Yenisei op zaterdag. Met onder meer zangeres Chloe Charles, Coultrain en Nick Mulvey, die we nog kennen uit het befaamde Portico Quartet, Benjamin Clementine maakte eerder al indruk op het Eurosonic Noorderslag festival. Dr. John ‘Spirit of Satch’

Een van de meest markante muzikanten uit New Orleans is pianist en zanger Dr. John. Op North Sea Jazz brengt hij dit jaar een ode aan plaatsgenoot Louis Armstrong, die als een van de pijlers van de jazztraditie kan worden gezien. Trompettist en zanger Armstrong was een rasentertainer en scoorde veel grote hits als What A Wonderful World en Hello Dolly. Van dit project van Dr. John komt in mei een album uit met bijdragen van speciale gasten, waarvan enkelen hem ook op het festival vergezellen. Hieruit blijkt maar weer hoe dicht de pop- en jazzmuziek bij elkaar liggen in een stad als New Orleans.

Er zijn veel ontwikkelingen in de moderne akoestische jazz waar musici van over de hele wereld even makkelijk switchen tussen mainstream, vrije- en modern gecomponeerde muziek, en en passant ook nog iets van hun culturele achtergrond en

Afgelopen jaar bracht Christian McBride Trio het album Out Here uit, dat in de VS direct werd genomineerd voor een Grammy voor Best Instrumental Jazz Album. In het trio spelen de veelbelovende jonge talenten Christian Sands en Ulysses Owens Jr. Voor de liefhebbers van straight-ahead jazz is dit een wederom niet te missen concert. McBride is een jazzgrootheid die jonge musici de kunst van het échte jazz spelen in de praktijk bijbrengt door ze onder zijn hoede te nemen en hen in zijn bands langzaam te laten groeien naar een mooie toekomst in de jazz. Daarmee zet hij een traditie voort waarin hele generaties jazzmusici het vak leerden; zelf speelde McBride als 17-jarige bassist in de band van Bobby Watson.

Darkside

The Daptone Super Soul Revue

Het podium in de Maas wordt zondag in een drie uur durende dampende soulrevue bevolkt door artiesten die muziek uitbrengen op het toonaangevende label Daptone Records. De basis van het label zijn de studio, een huis in de New Yorkse wijk Brooklyn, en vooral de huisband The Dap-Kings, die in het verleden Amy Winehouse begeleidde en waarin labeleigenaren Gabriel Roth en Neal Sugarman respectievelijk bas en tenorsax spelen. The Dap-Kings begeleidden tevens bijna verloren soulvocalisten als Sharon Jones en Charles Bradley alsnog naar grote roem. Ook de bands Antibalas en The Sugarman 3 geven acte de présence. Daptone staat voor met liefde gemaakte retro-soul en funk, het liefst live op het podium, en met frisse hernieuwde energie gebracht. John Escreet

Bits, Bytes and Jazz

In de Darling vanavond: MacBook meets a singer/musician. Beats en soundscapes komen uit een laptop en worden verder ingekleurd door gitarist, pianist of zanger. Eindelijk is Nicolaas Jaar op North Sea Jazz, met gitarist Dave Harrington presenteert hij Darkside. De Nederlandse producer Jameszoo werkt samen met Oostenrijker Dorian Concept en zangeres Neneh Cherry is terug in combinatie met producersduo RocketNumberNine. Jazz Vocals

Cécile McLorin Salvant

De vocale jazzgeschiedenis werd lang gedomineerd door vrouwen, maar de laatste jaren braken opvallend veel mannelijke stemmen door naar het grote publiek, zoals Jamie Cullum, Gregory Porter, José James en Kurt Elling. Vanavond introduceert North Sea Jazz een drietal nieuwe mannelijke vocalisten: Daniel von Piekartz treedt op met Benjamin Herman en de Engelse pianist en zanger Ian Shaw brengt de Amerikaanse vocalist Sachal Vasandani mee. Verder Cécile McLorin Salvant, een fantastische nieuwe zangeres die door critici én publiek wordt bejubeld en omarmd, en Stacey Kent, een van de meest populaire jazz zangeressen van dit moment.

Actuele New york jazz scene

New York is het centrum van de jazz. Musici vanuit de hele wereld trekken naar de stad om te studeren en te werken en houden daarna contact via sociale media en de uitwisseling van digitale muziek; zo vormen zich internationale bands. Op zondag een aantal musici dat moeiteloos switcht tussen straight-ahead jazz, vrije- en modern gecomponeerde muziek. Zoals de in New York woonachtige Brit John Escreet en de vrij spelende Nate Wooley. Daarnaast aandacht voor nieuwkomers binnen de New Urban Jazz, een op de jazztraditie gestoelde stijl waarin elementen van de muziek waarmee de musici opgroeiden, zoals soul en hiphop, zijn geïncorporeerd. Een goed voorbeeld hiervan is Takuya Kuroda.

Ambrose Akinmusire is een Amerikaanse trompettist die zijn eigen muzikale stijl heeft ontwikkeld door op zoek te gaan naar een dynamische manier van spelen en samen te werken met artiesten van verschillende achtergronden. Hij werkte recent nog met muzikanten als Jason Moran, Herbie Hancock en Wayne Shorter. Zijn nieuwste album The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint verscheen in maart op het vermaarde Blue Note-label.

De uitreiking van de Paul Acket Award aan Ambrose Akinmusire gebeurt op vrijdag 11 juli in de Madeira, waar hij aansluitend optreedt met zijn kwintet en Theo Bleckmann.

De Paul Acket Award 2014 wordt ondersteund door Stichting BNP Paribas. Deze Stichting helpt al 19 jaar carrières van jazzmuzikanten ontwikkelen door het steunen van opnames en concerten.

JAZZ 21 ARTIST OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM BY IJFO JAZZ21 IS DE NAAM VAN EEN PROGRAMMA OM DE ONTWIKKELING VAN OPKOMENDE JAZZMUSICI ACTIEF TE PROMOTEN EN STEUNEN. HET IS EEN INITIATIEF VAN DE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL ORGANISATION (IJFO) DAT WERD GESTART IN 2012. De eerste groep artiesten binnen dit ‘Artist Opportunity Program’ van de IJFO bestond uit Ambrose Akinmusire (VS), Stefano Bollani (Italië), Mathias Eick (Noorwegen), Tigran Hamasyan (VS), Gretchen Parlato (VS) en Phronesis (UK). Voor het lopende jaar zijn daar Darcy James Argue (Canada) en Ibrahim Maalouf (Libanon) aan toegevoegd. Deze muzikanten krijgen optredens toebedeeld op IJFO festivals en worden actief gepromoot via speciale programmeringen en media aandacht. Door ze meerdere jaren achtereen te boeken, helpt het programma tevens om hun aanhang te vergroten. Ieder van deze musici wordt voor een periode van tenminste drie jaar ondersteund. De IJFO, die bestaat uit zeventien grote jazzfestivals in Europa en Noord-Amerika, verklaart de noodzaak voor het initiatief als volgt: “De muziekindustrie onderging in de laatste tien jaar grote veranderingen en heeft een instabiele basis. Veel artiesten besloten zichzelf te promoten via het internet en andere doe-het-zelf mogelijkheden. Als gevolg van de kleiner geworden reikwijdte van de platenindustrie ontstond een algehele afname van promotie van jazzmuziek en is het steeds moeilijker geworden om nieuw talent in contact te brengen met nieuw publiek.”

Volgens de organisatie is het van belang dat de jazz een nieuwe generatie iconische muzikanten ontwikkelt waar jonge en toekomstige fans zich mee kunnen vereenzelvigen. Jongere jazzmusici kunnen zeker naam maken, en deden dat ook, zoals eerder onder meer Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman en Brad Mehldau in de jaren negentig. De IFJO is van mening dat het nu de aandacht moet vestigen op een volgende lichting muzikanten.

COMPOSITIEOPDRACHT NORTH SEA JAZZ Het North Sea Jazz Festival verstrekt elk jaar in samenwerking met het Fonds Podiumkunsten een vrije compositieopdracht aan een veelbelovende Nederlandse jazzcomponist. In 2014 valt deze eer te beurt aan Tony Roe. Bandleider Tony Roe (1979) studeerde klassiek piano aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. In 2009 studeerde hij af in jazzpiano aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam met een ’10 met onderscheiding’. Vanwege zijn interesse in muziektechnologie volgde hij hierin lessen aan de HKU en studeerde hij aan de faculteit Industrieel Ontwerpen van de TU Delft. Daarnaast is Tony verbonden aan het doctoraal programma ‘docARTES’ aan het Orpheus Instituut te Gent. Zijn onderzoek is gericht op het vinden van nieuwe manieren van improvisatie door bewegend beeld en andere media volledig interactief te laten zijn met muziek. Zijn bezoeken aan New York, waar hij les kreeg van Ari Hoenig, Jason Moran en Jean-Michel Pilc, gaven hem inspiratie in zijn doel om technologie in live jazzoptredens toe te passen en de scheidingslijn met de klassieke muziek te doorkruisen. Momenteel is Tony actief met zijn band Tin Men & The Telephone. De jury voor de Compositieopdracht North Sea Jazz 2014 bestaat uit Sander Grande (programmeur North Sea Jazz), Vera Vingerhoeds (jazzradio programmamaker, presentatrice, musicus/componist) en Eddy Westveer (programmeur Porgy & Bess/afgevaardigde van de VIP). Zij motiveert haar keuze als volgt: “De composities van Tony Roe zijn helder en verrassend. Hij kiest voor een thema of een motief en diept dit verder uit met veel gevoel voor sfeer en dynamiek. Hij maakt gebruik van hedendaagse technologieën als samples, klankvervorming en video en mengt deze met een akoestisch jazztrio (piano-contrabas-drums). Met zijn groep Tin Men & The Telephone brengt hij eigentijdse, verrassende composities die als grensverleggend kunnen worden beschouwd.”

Een onafhankelijke kunstbeurs met een festivalsfeer, waar een bijzondere mix wordt getoond van kunst, design, performances en installaties, gepresenteerd door verschillende galeries en kunstinitiatieven. Dat is Rotterdam Contemporary Art Fair, voor de tweede keer aanwezig op North Sea Jazz.

Dit jaar hebben Rotterdam Contemporary Art Fair en het North Sea Jazz Festival hun krachten gebundeld en presenteren met trots een unieke tentoonstelling met kunst van nationale en internationale, aankomende en gevestigde kunstenaars. Dit alles gepresenteerd door nieuwe en bekende nationale en internationale galeries. Bezoekers zijn in Ahoy van harte welkom op Hudson square. Rotterdam Contemporary Art is een selectie van RAW Art Fair, de kunstbeurs die jaarlijks plaatsvindt tijdens de Rotterdam Art Week in februari. De beurs werd in 2012 in het leven geroepen en beleefde afgelopen februari haar derde succesvolle editie. Vorig jaar vond de eerste succesvolle samenwerking met het North Sea Jazz Festival plaats onder de naam Raw Art. Vanaf 2015 zal de Art Fair verdergaan onder de naam Rotterdam Contemporary Art Fair.

Premium Jazz Art De kunsttentoonstellingen van Music Inspired Art zijn al vele jaren een vast onderdeel van het North Sea Jazz Festival. Ook in 2014 zijn voor de exposities vooraanstaande kunstenaars geselecteerd die de dynamiek van jazz op hun eigen manier vastleggen. Daarnaast vinden ook dit jaar weer live painting-sessies plaats. In de Mekong zaal is er speciale aandacht voor ’s werelds beste hedendaagse jazzfotograaf Jimmy Katz; de New Yorker is onder meer huisfotograaf van het vermaarde Blue Note platenlabel. In dezelfde ruimte is ook een selectie te bezichtigen van de beste ontwerpen voor de North Sea Jazz art poster, door studenten van de Willem de Kooning Academie.

Technical Audio Devices (TAD) Laboratories Inc. is ontstaan uit de denkwijze nieuwe technologieĂŤn te ontdekken voor het herscheppen van het zuivere geluid van live-optredens. Zowel technisch als muzikaal is TAD vooruitstrevend en behoort het merk tot de hoogste regionen in de high-end audio. Het hart van de unieke constructie van de TAD-luidsprekers is de Coherent Source Transducer (CST). Deze concentrische configuratie verenigt het akoestische centrum van de tweeter en de midrange. NA EEN UITERST SUCCESVOLLE EERSTE EDITIE KEERT SO WHAT’S NEXT? IN HET NAJAAR TERUG IN MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN. HET FESTIVAL, DAT DE GRENZEN VAN DE JAZZ VERKENT EN ZICH NIET GRAAG IN EEN HOKJE LAAT PLAATSEN, RICHT ZICH OOK DIT JAAR OP DE NIEUWE, SUCCESVOLLE, JONGE JAZZARTIESTEN DIE BEZIG ZIJN DE WERELD TE VEROVEREN. In samenwerking met het North Sea Jazz Festival presenteert Muziekgebouw Eindhoven op zes verschillende podia zo’n twintig uiteenlopende artiesten. Vorig jaar zorgden onder meer Gregory Porter, José James en Eric Vloeimans’ Gatecrash voor volle zalen. Daarnaast was er ook ruime belangstelling voor nieuwe gezichten als Snarky Puppy en Re:Freshed Orchestra. Ook dit jaar komt een keur aan artiesten langs van uiteenlopend pluimage. North Sea Jazz Club komt naar het festival! ©eric van nieuwland

De Amsterdamse jazzclub verhuist dit jaar voor drie dagen naar het North Sea Jazz Festival om er deel te nemen aan hét jazzfeest in juli. Net als op het Westergasfabriekterrein kan publiek er in een ontspannen setting genieten van een dinerconcert. Grote namen in een intieme setting, geheel in New Yorkse stijl: aan tafel dineren met pal voor je neus een optreden. Dat is het idee achter de North Sea Jazz Club. Op het programma in Ahoy staat een doorsnede van wat men doorgaans in de club treft. Zo kunnen bezoekers genieten van de Britse souljazz nieuwkomer Zara McFarlane, die in een adem genoemd wordt met zangeressen als Nina Simone en Erykah Badu en haar muziek uitbrengt op het label van Gilles Peterson. Ook huisband The Fresh Cuts is van de partij. Zij staan erom bekend op vrijdagavonden (de zogenoemde Friday Night Out) met speciale gasten de club op stelten te zetten. Stomende blues is er van King of the World, die geïnspireerd door John Lee Hooker, BB King en Albert King hun naam opeisen in de blues scene. Muzikale ontdekkingsreis

North sea round town Van intieme concerten in huiskamers en schijnbaar toevallige jamsessies op buitenpleinen langs optredens in restaurants en café’s tot uitbundige shows op locaties waaronder BIRD en LantarenVenster. North Sea Round Town maakt van Rotterdam één groot muziekspektakel met voornamelijk gratis toegankelijke optredens. De stad warmt iedere dag iets meer op, om te eindigen met een grote knaller: het North Sea Jazz Festival in Ahoy Rotterdam. Het festivalprogramma staat vanaf half mei online op www.northsearoundtown.nl. North Sea Round Town biedt concerten, tentoonstellingen, masterclasses, lezingen, jamsessies en afterparty’s voor jong en oud op niet minder dan 100 Rotterdamse binnen- en buitenlocaties. Nederlands Fotomuseum

Het Nederlands Fotomuseum staat deze zomer in het teken van de Kaukasus. Flavours of Jazz Mario Ridder van restaurant De Zwethheul verlegt graag zijn grenzen. Voor de tweede keer verhuist hij zijn volledige restaurant naar het North Sea Jazz Festival. Daar waar muziek mensen in vervoering brengt, doet Mario dat met zijn smaken. Geen pretenties, gewoon verdraaid goed. Wat hij doet, doet hij met bezieling en passie. Dat proef, zie en voel je. Iedere hap is tongstrelend. Een combinatie van klassieke eenvoud en pure klasse. Net zoals de artiesten op North Sea Jazz. Tijdens het festival serveert Mario een ‘snel’ menu zodat bezoekers geen enkel optreden hoeven te missen. Wil men uitgebreid de tijd nemen om te genieten, dan kan dat natuurlijk ook. Net zoals in zijn restaurant langs de Zweth: alles is mogelijk. In de keuken of het restaurant, op het water of langs het water, snelle lunch of uitgebreid diner, alles met één constante: kwaliteit. Dat overleeft alles en iedereen.

After the show is … BOOGIEBALL Waar North Sea Jazz eindigt, begint BOOGIEBALL. Dé afterparty’s waar bezoekers twee muzikale nachten oog in oog staan met ’s werelds beste soul- en jazzartiesten.

Op 11 en 12 juli biedt jazzclub Bird zowel artiesten als publiek een warm welkom. Na vijf jaar zijn de BOOGIEBALL afterparty’s al legendarisch. Met gasten als Macy Gray, Anthony Hamilton, Cody ChesnuTT, Marcus Miller, Robert Glasper, Janelle Monáe en Questlove is de lijst fameus. Ook dit jaar pakt BOOGIEBALL weer uit: tot het laatste moment blijft het speculeren welke artiesten er dit jaar achter de draaitafels plaatsnemen voor een unieke en eenmalige dj-set. Niet vaak krijg je als bezoeker de gelegenheid om artiesten van dit formaat als ‘plaatjesdraaier’ te aanschouwen.

Hét jaarlijkse evenement op het eiland barst dit jaar los op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 augustus. Woensdag 27 augustus treedt zanger José James al op in Brakkeput Mei Mei en de avond erna wordt het festivalterrein geopend met een bijzonder, gratis, optreden. Het Metropole Orkest brengt dan op het hoofdpodium een ode aan de Curaçaose muzikant Doble R (oftewel Rignald Recordino) met een keur aan artiesten uit Nederland én van het eiland zelf, waaronder Shirma Rouse, Izaline Calister, Giovanca, Ompie Stefania en Randal Corsen. Ook het programma voor het festival zelf krijgt al aardig vorm. Zo keren op vrijdag succesacts Chic featuring Nile Rodgers en Maná terug naar het festival en zijn er verder optredens van onder meer Dianne Reeves en Maceo Parker. Op zaterdag trapt Dr. John de dag af, gevolgd door Chaka Khan, Sierra Maestra en Juan Luis Guerra. Afsluiter op het hoofdpodium is niemand minder dan Bruno Mars.

Net als vorige jaren vindt Curaçao North Sea Jazz plaats in en rond het World Trade Center bij Piscadera Bay. Sinds de eerste editie in 2010 kreeg het publiek daar vele grote namen voorgeschoteld, zoals Lionel Richie, George Benson, John Legend, Simply Red, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Rubén Blades, Earth, Wind & Fire, Alicia Keys… Vorig jaar kwamen daar nog weergaloze optredens bij van onder meer Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Paul Anka, Herbie Hancock en de knallende afsluiter van Prince, die maar liefst ruim twee uur doorging. The biggest annual event on the island takes place on Friday August 29 and Saturday August 30 this year. Singer José James will be performing at Brakkeput Mei Mei on Wednesday August 27; the day after, the festival site will be initiated by a very special concert which is free of charge. The Dutch Metropole Orkest will honor the music of Curaçao musician Doble R (aka Rignald Recordino) with a selection of artists stemming from both The Netherlands and the island itself, among which Shirma Rouse, Izaline Calister, Giovanca, Ompie Stefania en Randal Corsen. The program for the festival itself is already shaping up nicely. On Friday, Chic featuring Nile Rodgers and Mexican rockers Maná return to the festival. Other performances will be by Dianne Reeves and Maceo Parker, among others. On Saturday night, Dr. John will kick off the day, followed by, among others, Chaka Khan, Sierra Maestra, and Juan Luis Guerra. The final performance of the festival will be by none other than Bruno Mars.

Welcome to North Sea Jazz! This July, Rotterdam will be full of great music again. On JUly 11, 12 and 13, venue Ahoy will host the 39th edition of the world famous Port of Rotterdam North Sea Jazz festival, which will take place in the city for the ninth time.

This year, the organisation expects more than a thousand musicians, spread out over 150 performances and twelve different stages. Though the numbers of visitors varied between 65.000 and 70.000 in recent years, the festival still manages to retain its intimate character.

North Sea Jazz is the largest indoor music festival in the world, known globally as the event where the past, present and future of jazz are featured within three days. Next to a firm base of jazz many genres will pass by, such as blues, soul, funk, hip hop, world, pop and much more. Next to enjoying top names from around the world, visitors get the chance to discover new favorite artists. This year, real jazz lovers can look forward to performances by Artist In Residence Christian McBride, the Metropole Orkest playing jazz compositions by Quincy Jones and also collaborating with Joshua Redman and Robert Glasper, and Dave Holland, who will perform with his project PRISM. Fans of different musical genres are able to enjoy performances by Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams, Mavis Staples and Outkast, among others. This is just a small taste of what the festival has to offer this year.

Apart from world class music, North Sea Jazz also offers quality in food and drinks. The North Sea Jazz Festival started in 1976 in The Hague with three hundred performing artists divided over six halls. The first edition attracted nine thousand visitors, who enjoyed performances by legendary

Artist In Residence: Christian McBride

Christian McBride is this year’s Artist in Residence because he is seen as one of the pillars of modern-day jazz. He has played at North Sea Jazz regularly, but only once with his own group. As one of the best and most sought-after bass players he was always on the road with other musicians, such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, The Roots and Sting. Tonight he will play straight-ahead jazz of the highest level with the beautiful quintet Inside Straight, which includes promising talent Warren Wulf (vibraphone). McBride hosts a radio show in the US, The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian McBride, in which he has conversations with musicians of his choice. He will hold similar conversations at the festival; they are rounded off each day with a modest duo performance.

Quincy Jones

Quincy Jones is known mostly as the producer of Michael Jackson’s successful album Thriller. However, he started his career on the jazz set, as an arranger for Count Basie, among others. Later he played trumpet with Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie. In Paris he studied composing with Nadia Boulanger and produced and arranged for Jacques Brel, for example. At the end of the 1950s Jones recorded with his big band. A great many of the scores were lost, until the Finnish composer and arranger Vellu Halkosami decided to write them down again, ten years ago, based on the available recordings and with the aid of the master himself. At the festival, Jones is honored by the Metropole Orkest Big Band that will perform a number of these arrangements. Jones will also present three of his protégés: Nikki Yanofsky, Alfredo Rodriguez and Andreas Varady. 75 years of Blue Note

This Friday, Blue Note Records will celebrate their 75th anniversary at North Sea Jazz with concerts by today’s greats: Gregory Porter, Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge and winner of the Paul Acket Award, Ambrose Akinmusire. The iconic jazz label has released high-quality jazz records throughout its long history and will keep on doing so. Even in a shrinking market Blue Note doesn’t bring out artists and styles arbitrarily but continuously publishes those artists who really put their mark on jazz music. Even the most talented artists of the youngest generation have found a home with the label. Besides the concerts, there is also a photo exhibit by Blue Note resident photographer Jimmy Katz in Mekong hall.

Pharrell Williams

In the past year, Pharrell Williams has dominated the pop charts. He was involved with three number-one hits and released his second solo album, Girl. Pharrell took care of the guest vocals on the songs Get Lucky by Daft Punk and Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, and his own single Happy scored high on the charts everywhere. Pharrell has been an influential producer for at least fifteen years and worked with many a great name, for instance by being half of producer couple The Neptunes. He was also the driving force behind N.E.R.D. The festival will show various artists with whom he has collaborated over the past years, such as Paloma Faith, Nile Rodgers and Robin Thicke.

Tonight, our Artist In Residence Christian McBride will perform with his big band. Remarkable, since the orchestra has never before performed in the Netherlands, even though visitors to Curaçao North Sea Jazz were already introduced to the band last year. His very first album with the Christian McBride Big Band, 2011’s The Good Feeling, won the bassist a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance instantly. New fusion

Fusion is not so much a genre as a distinguishing approach to music; mixing a variety in styles, using complex tempi, extensive and often instrumental compositions, long improv sessions (individually or with a group) and a very high level of mastering your instrument. In Maas and Congo halls, North Sea Jazz will present a new generation of fusion artists and groups on Saturday: Tigran Quintet, Snarky Puppy & Friends, Dirty Loops, Ibrahim Maalouf and Katché, Bona, DiBatista and Legnini. Just like the jazz rock and jazz funk bands of the 1970s, they will perform mostly instrumental jazz with funk, R&B and rock influences, with a heavy groove and a modern new sound.

In the past years we have already talked about avant-garde artists in various themes, such as Jazz Rocks! (2013), New Fusion (2012), New Urban Jazz (2012 and 2013), and Global Brooklyn NY (2010). We can now say that generation has really arrived.

X, XL, XXL

Big, bigger, biggest: under the heading XXL, Darling hall will house a wide range of big bands and orchestras on Saturday. Besides the Christian McBride Big Band, with a number of well-known Dutch jazz musicians playing along, there is also the trendsetting Norwegian Trondheim Jazz Orchestra with special guest and saxophone talent Marius Neset. The Bridge is the title of the special collaboration of Brazilian singer-songwriter and pop star Lenine and Dutch composer, arranger and bandleader Martin Fondse. The night will get a spectacular closing with Sun Ra Centennial Dream Arkestra. Sun Ra was famous for his cosmic Afro-futuristic philosophy and his phenomenal compositions and concerts, preaching enlightenment and peace. The bandleader, who passed away in 1993, was born 100 years ago this year. For this reason the ever-performing Arkestra was expanded into a huge orchestra this year that will perform spontaneous musical madness, spiced up with soul and jazz, while dressed in remarkable outfits. The band is directed by sax player Marshall Allen, who has been part of the group since 1958 and took over after Sun Ra’s death. Even today Sun Ra is still an inspiration to many musicians, on the jazz scene as well as in hip hop and funk. Sing Me The Songs

Singer-songwriters with a distinctive link to jazz music; this is the overall theme in Yenisei hall on Saturday. The program features singer Chloe Charles, Coultrain and Nick Mulvey, whom we all know from the famed Portico Quartet. Benjamin Clementine already made an impression at the Dutch Eurosonic Noorderslag festival earlier this year. Dr. John ‘Spirit of Satch’

One of the most prominent musicians from New Orleans is pianist and singer Dr. John. At North Sea Jazz this year he will pay tribute to fellow New Orleanian Louis Armstrong, who can be seen as one of the pillars of the jazz tradition. Trumpeter and singer Armstrong was a born entertainer who scored many great hits like What A Wonderful World and Hello Dolly. An album from this project by Dr. John will be released in May with contributions from special guests, some of whom will also accompany him at the festival. This is telling of how close-knit pop and jazz music are in a city like New Orleans.

All of a sudden, and inevitably, there is a new generation of musicians playing a new, groovy jazz. A scene on which Robert Glasper takes the lead. There truly is a new sound in jazz rock, where musicians find exposure through YouTube, such as Snarky

Puppy. There are many developments in modern acoustic jazz in which musicians from all over the world switch easily between mainstream, free and modern composed music and, incidentally, also bring something of their own cultural background and

Last year, the Christian McBride Trio released their album Out Here which was immediately nominated for a Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Album. The trio consists of promising talents Christian Sands and Ulysses Owens, Jr. For fans of straightahead jazz, this is a must-see concert. McBride is a jazz legend who is able to teach young musicians the art of true jazz by taking them under his wing and letting them grow to a fine future in jazz by letting them practice on stage with his bands. Thus he continues a tradition where whole generations of jazz musicians were taught the profession; as a seventeen-yearold bass player, McBride himself started out in Bobby Watson’s band.

The Daptone Super Soul Revue

This Sunday, the stage in Maas hall will be crowded with artists releasing their music on the prominent label Daptone Records in a three-hour steaming soul revue. The basis of the label are a studio, located in a brownstone in Brooklyn, New York, and especially house band The Dap-Kings, who accompanied Amy Winehouse in the past and includes label owners Gabriel Roth and Neal Sugarman on bass and tenor sax respectively. The Dap-Kings have also accompanied almost-lost soul vocalists like Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley to long-awaited fame. The bands Antibalas and The Sugarman 3 are also present on Sunday. Daptone stands for lovingly made retro soul and funk, preferably live and on stage, and is brought with refreshing and renewed energy. Bits, Bytes and Jazz

In the Darling tonight: MacBook meets singer/musician. Beats and soundscapes will be brought forth from a laptop and given color by a guitarist, pianist or vocalist. Finally we can enjoy Nicolaas Jaar at North Sea Jazz; he will present Darkside together with guitarist Dave Harrington. Dutch producer Jameszoo will perform with Austrian Dorian Concept and we see the return of singer Neneh Cherry, together with producing duo RocketNumberNine. Jazz Vocals

The history of jazz vocals has long been dominated by women, but in recent years a striking number of male voices broke through to a larger audience, such as Jamie Cullum, Gregory Porter, José James and Kurt Elling. Tonight, North Sea Jazz will introduce three new male vocalists: Daniel von Piekartz, who performs with Benjamin Herman, and English pianist and singer Ian Shaw, who will bring along American vocalist Sachal Vasandani. Also present: Cécile McLorin Salvant, a fantastic new singer who is embraced and applauded by critics and public alike, and Stacey Kent, one of the most popular jazz singers of the present time.

Contemporary New york jazz scene

New York is the center of jazz music. Artists from all over the world are drawn to the city for study and work, and afterwards keep in touch through social media and exchanging digital tracks; forming international bands that way. On Sunday, a number of musicians that switch effortlessly between straight-ahead jazz, free and modern composed music will enter the stage. Such as New York-based Brit John Escreet and the freely playing Nate Wooley. There is also attention to newcomers to the New Urban Jazz scene, a style that is based on the jazz tradition but where elements of the music that the artists grew up with are incorporated. A good example is Takuya Kuroda.

bands, although this tradition still continues and brings forth new talent. Examples can be found this year with Christian McBride. In short: jazz is alive and kicking, and this edition will give you many examples.

COMPOSITION ASSIGNMENT NORTH SEA JAZZ EACH YEAR, THE NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL COMMISSIONS A PROMISING DUTCH JAZZ COMPOSER TO WRITE A FREE COMPOSITION. IN 2014, THE HONOR GOES TO TONY ROE. Bandleader Tony Roe (1979) studied classical piano at the Royal Conservatory Den Haag. In 2009, he graduated in jazz piano at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with honors. He also studied music technology, took a course in Graphic Design and is connected to the doctoral program ‘docARTES’ at Orpheus Institute in Gent, Belgium. His research is aimed at finding new ways of improvisation by letting moving images and other media be completely interactive with music. At this moment Roe is active with his band Tin Men & The Telephone.

JAZZ 21 ARTIST OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM BY IJFO JAZZ21 IS THE NAME OF A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO ACTIVELY PROMOTE AND SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF UP-AND-COMING JAZZ MUSICIANS. AN INITIATIVE OF THE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL ORGANIZATION (IJFO), IT HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE SINCE 2012. The first group of musicians to engage in this Artist Opportunity Program by IJFO are: Ambrose Akinmusire (US), Stefano Bollani (Italy), Mathias Eick (Norway), Tigran Hamasyan (US), Gretchen Parlato (US) and Phronesis (UK). This year, Darcy James Argue (Canada) and Ibrahim Maalouf (Libanon) were also added to the program. Involvement will entail having the artists perform at IJFO festivals, awarding them promotional opportunities through special programming and media outreach, as well as helping them increase their following by bringing them back for “encore” performances in consecutive years. Each artist receives this support for at least three years. The IJFO, consisting of 17 of the largest jazz festivals in Europe and North America, explains the initiative as follows: “The music industry has endured great shifts over the past decade and is still on unstable ground. Substantial amounts of artists have resorted to promoting themselves through the internet and other DIY avenues. As a result, there has been an across-the-board decrease in promotion and overall increased difficulty in linking new talent with new audiences.”

The organization feels that jazz needs to develop a new generation of iconic musicians that younger and forthcoming generations of fans can relate to. Younger jazz musicians can certainly make a name for themselves, and have, as exemplified by artists such as Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau in the 1990s. The IJFO now feels the need to bring attention to a new generation of musicians.

PREMIUM JAZZ ART THE ART EXHIBITIONS BY MUSIC INSPIRED ART HAVE BEEN A REGULAR FEATURE AT THE NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL FOR MANY YEARS. FOR 2014, NEW EXPOSITIONS BY PROMINENT ARTISTS HAVE BEEN SELECTED, WHICH COVER THE DYNAMICS OF JAZZ IN THEIR OWN WAYS. LIVE PAINTINGS SESSIONS ARE ALSO ON THE ROSTER AGAIN THIS YEAR.

In Mekong hall, special attention is directed at Jimmy Katz, the world’s best contemporary jazz photographer. The New Yorker is, among other things, the resident photographer for renowned record label Blue Note. In the same room, a selection of designs for the North Sea Jazz art poster can be viewed, made by students of Willem de Kooning Academy. Digital drawings by Alexander de Kok (NL), digital photo collages by Raphael Sprenger (D), concert drawings by Thea van Doorn (NL), recent work by the live painters as well as hundreds of projected photos of the festival and its artists will be shown in Madeira Lounge. The latter can also be purchased.

The live painting sessions will take place at Congo Square and will feature Studio Giftig on Friday, Easton Davy (US) on Saturday and Tymon Ferenc de Laat aka Melikepainting on Sunday. Furthermore, both photographer Ferry Knijn’s iPad app Dutch Jazz Heroes and Mascolori’s jazz art shoezz will premiere at the festival.

ART POSTER COMPETITION THE WINNER OF THIS YEAR’S ART POSTER COMPETITION IS SEB IKSO. HIS DESIGN WILL BE ON SALE AT THE FESTIVAL, BOTH AS A SILKSCREEN PRINT AND ON T-SHIRTS. Traditionally, the North Sea Jazz art poster competition is organized among students of Rotterdam’s Willem de Kooning Academy. The jury praised Seb’s design for its freshness and clear lining. This year, a second T-shirt design will be made of the runner-up made by Joran Backx, because the jury found his design especially suitable for this purpose.
