Social Networking opportunities at Chamber of Commerce events generate more business leads than any Tweet or Facebook Update. The biggest challenge for most new members will be time management and making a conscience effort to get out of the office and out from behind that computer monitor. Once there, members will have an excellent opportunity to put a face to their company and a chance to share their passion for what they do with other like-minded entrepreneurs.

Remember the fundamentals of networking: most people you meet may not want or even need your company’s services, but in this environment, how they can assist you is by recommending you or your company to people who do. A third party recommendation or personal lead is far superior to cold calls. With a personal recommendation, trust is instilled even before first contact made. With a personal lead, the ice can be broken sooner, and both scenarios result in new business quicker. This is the Chamber concept at its best and how long standing relationships are formed in our community.

The Annual Membership fee to join The West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce is less than $17 per month. “Good old fashion eye contact, hand shaking and exchanging of business cards is the simple formula to success here.”

t’s getting down to the proverbial crunch time for B.C. Liberal leadership hopefuls, and Christy Clark made sure everyone who came out to here her speak in North Vancouver Monday night was aware the clock is ticking. In a day-long tour of the North Shore that saw Clark make appearances in both North Van and West Van, the former education minister and CKNW broadcaster touted the unique opportunity available to British Columbians — the chance to directly determine who the next premier will be. “You can bring optimism and hope back to this province,” said HAVING HER SAY - Christy Clark. Clark addresses a crowd at Parkgate “And the only way to be a part Community Centre Tuesday night. of that and to have your say is Greg Hoekstra photo to be a member of the Liberal party.” In her brief 40-minute appearance at the Parkgate Community Centre, Clark discussed the need to create a culture in Victoria where MLAs from across the province feel comfortable disagreeing with the government. Too long, she said, have MLAs worked to appease their party, not their constituents. She also reinforced her belief in the importance of families. Clark has campaigned behind her platform of “Families First”, a policy where government initiatives and programs are examined based on their affect on families. She also discussed the need for more facilities and programs to address mental health issues for children. The province, she said, has failed to connect services to kids and the families that support them. “I hear constant reports from advocates about children in trouble, and we have to take a hard look at this problem,” she said. “We’re not doing something right. And we have to think longer term. Families support the people in trouble, but ‘who will rent an apartment to them?’” Clark fielded questions on climate reduction targets, the importance of promoting entrepreneurship and innovation and the economic benefits of the film industry. She said she plans on rewarding investors through the tax system to provide enough capital money to start new businesses and continue to promote the HST as way to bolster the province’s important movie business. The B.C. Liberal party leadership election is scheduled for Feb. 26. The deadline to join the Liberal party is Feb. 4. skolenko@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/seankolenko

news Snowshoer cheats death. A 50-year-old snowshoer was seriously injured Sunday after falling from the peak of Hollyburn Mountain. Rescuers were called to the scene around 1 p.m. Jan. 30 after reports that a woman had slipped on a steep icy slope and plunged down the mountainside. North Shore Rescue search manager Tim Jones said the woman fell roughly 30 metres, coming to a stop after hitting a tree. The impact left her with serious head and chest injuries, but likely saved her life. “She’s very lucky,” Jones told The Outlook. “If she hadn’t hit that tree she could have fallen much further. Based on past experiences, these falls are almost always fatal.” The woman was airlifted by helicopter longline to the Cypress Bowl parking area, where an ambulance was waiting. She was then rushed to Lions Gate hospital. Jones said the incident highlights dangers that are prevalent this time of year. This is something we’ve been warning people a lot about lately,” he said. –Greg Hoekstra

So, what now? With a fall election looming, City of North Vancouver councillors are drawing a line in the sand over the future of the Harry Jerome Rec Centre. SEAN KOLENKO S TA F F R E P O RT E R

I

n a city with a strategic and so far successful plan for adding dense housing options, North Vancouver residents will need a new, cohesive community recreation centre that will support its growing population. And, Coun. Guy Heywood says, the city can have the long-discussed, new fitness building he feels it deserves. But, likely not until after the next municipal election. “We can get it back. Councils can undo anything an old council has done,” says Heywood. “And if we aspire to be the socially sustainable community we say we do, we need to make sure we have adequate facilities to exercise and socialize.” Heywood has been the councillor most vocal about the need for a new Harry Jerome recreation complex. He was the lone contrary vote on Dec. 6 when the North Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club was granted its request to stay in its current plot on Lonsdale Avenue, just south of 23rd Street. That decision, he said, rendered any development options south of 23rd obsolete and tied the collective hands of staff and council in all future development discussions. But, after council voted 4-3 in favour of preserving both Norseman and McDougall fields on Jan. 10 to maintain much-needed greenspace in Central Lonsdale— at the request of the neighbouring Courthouse Residents Association — Heywood says the city missed an opportunity to do what it was being asked to do, create more parks. Currently, the four buildings that make up the Harry Jerome complex — Memorial gym, Mickey McDougall building, Silver Harbour seniors centre and the Harry Jerome structure itself — take up about 12,000 square metres of land. About the same area is being used for above-ground parking in the area. Once consolidated, Heywood believes a new, stand alone building would free up space to create more parks. If the parking went underground, that space could also potentially be used to create greenspace. The only encroachment on such areas would be the land sold to developers to fund the construction. In its reserves, adds Heywood, the city has enough money to pay for the project outright. “The only contribution the city has made to recreation is the basement of the John Braithwaite Centre and that was a developer give-away,” says Heywood. “The city has the crown jewel recreation centre and it should not be renovated.” Coun. Bob Fearnely agrees. Fearnley, who voted in favour of allowing the lawn bowlers to remain at their current spot in December, says he made a mistake in doing so. Fearnley says the city should not be taking any options relating to the Harry Jerome centre off the table before participating in more public consultations. Council’s last decision, he adds, was nothing more than political maneuvering by a few members to exert control and ensure their desired outcome is achieved. “Half the time, you can’t use those fields [Norseman and McDougall], they’re mudpits. And, we had been talking about parking establishing other fields elsewhere. We told everybody, and I mean everybody, that if we’re taking out Norseman we we’re helping put in a $1-million turf field at Sutherland,” says Fearnley. “But this has nothing to do with Harry Jerome and everything to do with getting a majority. The Courthouse residents Association was used by [Coun. Craig] Keating and [Mayor] Mussatto. They wanted to know if I’d be on board to use this as a main plank in the next election. We’ve wasted, at least, $150,000 on design charettes and planners. It’s all wasted if this decision stands.”

Fearnley, also a member of the North Van Recreation Commission, added that an extended period of renovation would put too much stress on the rec centre system as the Harry Jerome complex is by far the busiest in North Van. The Silver Harbour Seniors Centre, now also a candidate for renovation, has documented asbestos issues that could prove dangerous if the building gets a facelift. Annewen Loverin, executive director at the seniors’ facility, says the centre has asbestos in the walls and floor tiles. Consultants, she adds, have advised their board of directors not to disturb the structure for construction although hazardous materials specialists have been in to deal with problems in the past. Keating, who lives in the 100-block of E. 25th Street, behind an area potentially affected by development if a new Harry Jerome were to be built, said his preference for renovation stems from the opportunity to save the city money and continue to house user groups like Flicka Gymnastics. “I hope this becomes and election issue,” he says. “Then we can show what kind of money can be saved.”

iffany Haziza knows exactly what she’s wearing to the Oscars: black patent-leather Christian Louboutin shoes with threeinch stiletto heels, a sexy black strapless dress and pearls. Normally, she’s not a glam girl – today she’s decked out in a grey cashmere sweater, biker boots and jeans, her nails unpolished – but it’s not every day you get an invite to the star-studded Academy Awards. Last week it was announced that the North Vancouver designer’s jewelry would be included in the gift bags given to nominees and presenters at the 2011 Oscars. COFFEE That came with a WITH Hollywood invite, but Haziza had to respectfully decline. Justin Bedall She’d already booked another editor@northshore outlook.com big party – on Jan. 27 her son turns 4. Still, she didn’t want to let her Oscar moment pass without a celebration. So, after her son’s Spiderman-themed birthday, she’s throwing a red-carpet gala for her girlfriends at her North Van home. “Why not?” she says playfully. “It’s my Oscar party.” One of her VIP guests will be Sue Messent of Tres Femme, who helped land her the gig by submitting info about Haziza’s Buddha & The Raven Studios to the company that puts together the Oscar gift bags. Since the Oscar announcement, Haziza’s already hectic life of creating jewelry, ferrying her two young kids between karate and hockey classes, helping with her husband’s outdoor gear company and volunteering has become even harder to schedule. This week she was interviewed on the Mike Bullard radio show and next Wednesday she’s booked for Entertainment Tonight. She’s already been profiled in the Vancouver Sun, Global TV and News 1130. “It’s been a blur,” says Haziza, who began making jewelry a decade ago. Haziza spent around $7,000 to make her Oscar pieces, but already the investment is paying dividends. She’s watched visits to her website jump from 30 a day to 2,000 – and counting. Already, she’s received jewelry orders from

Texas to Iceland. She also been approached by a U.S. company that wants to distribute her jewelry from L.A. to New York. Equally cool: She just received a message of congrats on LinkedIn from local rocker Bif Naked, a woman she’d love to collaborate with in the future. For the Oscar bags, Haziza designed 70-plus custom pearl and Swarovski crystal lariat necklaces. “Every single one is different,” she says, noting they’re versatile enough to be worn by Natalie Portman or Mark Wahlberg. Haziza, a self-described “wannabe Buddhist,” blesses each piece of jewelry while meditating at an alter inside her studio, surrounded by Buddha statues, burning candles and incense and pictures of her family – and Oprah Winfrey and Madonna, two powerful women who inspire her. “It’s very healing for me,” she says of the process. And while making jewelry, she’s often watching PVRed episodes of Oprah. Haziza left home at 14 “because she knew there was a better life for [her]” and “grew up on [Oprah],” always feeling an affinity for the Queen of Daytime TV, who also had a difficult childhood. “Oprah was on her own at 15. [Oprah] always had your back. [Her show provided] positive messages...” explains Haziza, who says she “paid her dues early [in life].” She’s especially excited that Oprah, one of this year’s Oscar presenters, will receive a gift bag with her jewelry piece inside. She knows Winfrey has a penchant for big diamonds, but is thrilled “just knowing it’s in her possession – and one way or another she’s going to get my love.” “I’m going to meet her one day.” Given Haziza’s current career trajectory, that day is likely coming soon. editor@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/justinbeddall

— EDITOR I A L —

Do political endorsements really matter? Keeping track of who supports who in the provincial politics leadership race is like watching hockey scores in January. Whether it’s former NDP leader Joy MacPhail endorsing Adrian Dix, as happened last week, or Liberal leadership hopefuls Christy Clark, George Abbott and Kevin Falcon jostling to get people in their corners, political endorsements mean little to us. Unless they are a political junkie or a voting member of either party, most people are really only interested in how they’ll be personally affected by a new premier and opposition leader. In many ways it seems a fool’s game, this courting of support by candidates and flaunting of endorsements from current and past MLAs, business leaders and other high-profile individuals and organizations. But isn’t that one of the key tenets of politics – the creation of relationships that may help the candidate and/or the party/government down the road? It’s not surprising that the six Liberal candidates, four of whom are in cabinet, have made a splash lately upon adding a name to their lists. Unlike the NDP, whose membership deadline has passed, Liberal leadership candidates have until 5 p.m. Friday (Feb. 4) to sign up new members. Doing so enhances their chances of becoming the next premier – a job with much more cachet than opposition leader. We can expect plenty of fireworks over the next few days. Clark has just one endorsement from a current MLA yet leads the polls among committed party members. She has pulled out the stops, posting a membership deadline clock on her website like some soon-toexpire eBay deal. As with mid-season hockey scores, the declaration of allegiances means little to the average political fan. We’re waiting for playoff time – the Feb. 26 Liberal leadership convention; April 17 for the NDP – when the games actually mean something and the action gets interesting. –Black Press

Parksville Uncorked

Re: “Quality or Quantity?” Outlook, Jan. 27 Editor, Councillor Pam Bookham thinks the only criteria for considering MEC’s application to rezone 212 Brooksbank and build a larger store is the nature of the jobs to be created. Her logic, I gather, is that industrial jobs pay more than retail. This is the kind of farsighted thinking I expect from some city councillors. No doubt Coun. Bookham will

soon lead the charge to shut down those nasty retail operations in Lower Lonsdale and replace them with factories. May I suggest, councillor, that a larger MEC store is exactly the type of service that North Vancouver residents would like, in order to provide outdoor equipment for their North Shore lifestyles? Of course jobs are important, but that’s not the only consideration. Allan McDonell, North Vancouver

histories New ‘milestone’ exhibition expores the shared heritage of First Nations and newcomers on the North Shore.

or most of her life, Maisie Hurley fought tirelessly on behalf of First Nations people. As the founder of the Native Voice newspaper, the Welsh-born activist exposed discriminatory practises in Canada’s schools and penitentiaries, urged the federal government to extend health care to First Nations communities, campaigned for aboriginal students to be admitted to law schools, and lobbied for First Nations people to be given the right to vote in B.C. Hurley was not First Nations. But, over the course of her career, the outspoken crusader helped so many First Nations people across the country that many considered her one of their own. She was family. Throughout her life, Hurley and her husband, Tom, received nearly 200 gifts from First Nations scattered across the Plains, the Arctic, and all of B.C. — artifacts that filled her home until passed away at Lions Gate Hospital in October 1964. Near the end of her life, Hurley lobbied for an aboriginal museum to be built on the North Shore’s Capilano Reserve, but, at the time, the money for such a facility simply wasn’t there. Even still, one of her final wishes was that her vast collection of art and artifacts be on display in a museum, where it could be shared with local residents and accessed by local First Nations community — the very people who created the gifts. Nearly half a century later, that wish has finally come true.

Unchartered territory Last week the North Vancouver Museum and Archives unveiled its massive new exhibition, “Entwined Histories: Gifts from the Maisie Hurley Collection.” The show, which runs until November, highlights a wide selection of Hurley’s artifacts, with particular emphasis on those originating from the Squamish Nation. Sharon Fortney, one of the show’s two curators, says the exhibition marks the first time the Hurley collection has been publicly displayed. But, perhaps more importantly, it’s also the first time the museum has explored First Nations history in the area. “To date, the North Vancouver museum hasn’t really told a diverse story about the people who live in this community,” said Fortney. “This exhibition speaks to a new direction. We’re trying to be more inclusive and more relevant to the people who live in North Vancouver.” Co-curator Damara Jacobs agrees. “It’s a milestone for the North Vancouver museum. They’re heading in a new direction and looking at engaging more with the local history, which is First Nations history,” says Jacobs. “This is a really big deal.”

Using federal grant money, the museum has been able to restore dozens of fascinating objects from the Hurley collection. Along one wall of the museum are portraits drawn by Hurley more than 60 years ago. The sketches — drawn with pastels on paper — depict a rare glimpse of historic First Nations people, from paddle carvers and mat makers, to native leaders such as Chief Jimmy Jimmy, Mary Agnes Capilano, and Chief August Jack Khatsahlano. There’s also a long list of Coast Salish artifacts, including carvings and model totems, baskets and trays made from coiled cedar roots, a red cedar bark mat, and a chinook-style canoe. But the crown jewel, says Fortney, is the swéwkw’elh — a chief’s blanket made of mountain goat and dog hair. After careful analysis, researchers at the University of Victoria’s advanced imaging lab have determined that some of the fur in the blanket comes from a breed of dog that went extinct in the mid-1800s, before the band had contact with non-First Nations. Such a blanket would only have been worn by someone of high status, Fortney notes. “The fact that they gave her these kinds of objects really speaks to the kind of esteem they held her in,” says Fortney. “They viewed her as family.” Whenever possible, Fortney and Jacobs have tried to identify not only the significance of the gifts on display, but the identity of the gift-giver — something Fortney says is unique to the Entwined Histories exhibition. “First Nations art is usually very anonymous,” says Fortney. “This is unusual that we’re able to name who made a lot of it.” Jacobs, who is also of Coast Salish background, says identifying the gift-giver has allowed the museum to make tangible connections to the present. Many of the Squamish Nation gift-givers, she notes, are directly related to community leaders living on the North Shore today. “Typically when people think of museums they think it’s dead, it’s gone, it’s in the past. Particularly when it comes to native culture,” says Jacobs. “A lot of people aren’t really aware that they’re surrounded by people who are indigenous to this very place. This show is part of something that’s still very much here. It’s alive.”

A new beginning Entwined Histories is perhaps one of the largest, most important, exhibitions in the history of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives. And, it’s likely long overdue, says executive director Nancy Kirkpatrick. “It’s quite remarkable. Here we are in 2011 and this is the first time this is happening,” says Kirkpatrick. “This exhibit marks a turning point for our museum. It focuses on community engagement and collaboration, and it demonstrates our conviction that community museums, such as ours, can and should be socially relevant.” Locally, the exhibition will run for 10 months, with plans in the works for school visits and a spring-break program aimed at young kids. Following its November wrap-up, the exhibition will continue north to Whistler. By promoting dialogue and understanding, says Kirkpatrick, the museum hopes to reveal connections between the past and the present. The end result, she hopes, will be a “sense of cohesion” and “a place where individuals are inspired and our community is strengthened.” “A lot of people think of museums as must and dusty. As a place to sweep off the cobwebs and look at the past. Well, we’re not that kind of museum,” Kirkpatrick says. “We want to bring stories to light and ask, ‘How does this affect us now?’” ‘Entwined Histories: Gifts from the Maisie Hurley Collection’ is presented by the North Vancouver Museum and Archives and the Squamish Nation, with support from the Museums Assistance Program, Department of Canadian Heritage. The exhibition, which also includes a documentary film, is open to the public until Nov. 6 at 209 West 4th Street, North Vancouver. Hours are Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more info call 604-987-5612 or visit www.northvanmuseum.ca.

ecessity is the mother of invention. Long gone are the days when employees could count on an employer or the government to provide for their retirement income. We live in a “do-it-yourself” world and Canadians, recognizing this, are taking control of their financial futures, especially when it comes to planning for their retirement. Today’s longer life expectancies make planning even more important. As a result, increasing numbers of Canadians are relying on regular personal investing as a way of ensuring they have enough income to support themselves comfortably during their retirement years. And in making this decision, many are considering stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other kinds of investments as a means of securing their future. There are good reasons for this. By choosing well-diversified investments, investors can spread their risk and take advantage of the peace-of-mind that comes from having their investments monitored by a professional investment advisor. Until quite recently, many investors tended to hold “low-risk” investments, such as Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) and Canada Savings Bonds. While such invest-

ments offered the advantage of exceptional safety, the returns they delivered were rarely enough to keep pace with inflation and pay tax. Times have changed. Increasingly, Canadians are turning to higher risk investments to put them in a more favourable financial position. Canadians are beginning to invest regularly, putting money aside as part of their monthly

budget, just like paying the rent or the mortgage. A pre-authorized contribution plan (PAC) is this easiest way to do this. After deciding on a regular amount of money to be deducted from your bank account, this method gives your money more time to grow and, if your focus is saving for your retirement and you are putting your money into an RSP, it can grow tax-free. That tax-free growth can be remarkable. Suppose you put $250 per month into an RSP over 25 years. If your fund grows 6%, you’d end up with an investment of $169,484 or $5,254 more than if you made an investment of $3,000 at the end of each year. The final move is to get started. He or she who hesitates is lost. Talk with an investment advisor and establish a strategy that maximizes your regular monthly contributions. Make investing a priority. This is where your investment advisor has an invaluable role to play. Keeping your investment strategy consistent with your personal needs is vital. Your investment advisor can help you do just that. It is never too soon to put an investment strategy in place. –This article was prepared by Sean Millington who is an Investment Advisor with TD Waterhouse Private Investment Advice, a division of TD Waterhouse Canada Inc., a subsidiary of The Toronto-Dominion Bank. Why should I hire you?

We’ll make sense of the numbers for you

Some tips on finding the right accountant.

H

ere’s the situation: You’ve reached a point in your life where you need to find a reliable professional accountant who can compliment your financial goals. So, how do you find the right one? First, I always recommend using a licensed professional. They will be insured and they have a vested interest in making sure they do their best work for you. Second, ask around. See if someone you know can give you a personal referral – and get at least three different names. Third, most public accountants will do an initial meeting to determine if they have the resources with which to assist you, and whether the two of you are compatible. If someone wants your money up front before you have hired them, you don’t want them. Fourth, go prepared to that first meeting. Have a list of questions. What should you ask at your first meeting? The number one question, of course, is rate. Most accountants will either have a minimum fee or hourly rate or some combination of that. Some bill straight by the hour, some value bill (which means they will estimate the value of a particular service and have a minimum fee for that service). And just because an hourly rate is high does not mean your bill will be high. Generally speaking, a $50/hour tax preparer should be twice as fast as one who charges $25/hour. Ask if they have other similar clients to find out if your potential accountant familiar with your specific needs. If you are looking to invest in a rental property, for example, have they worked with the capital gains issues associated with the eventual disposition? Ask how long this person takes to return calls or emails. If you haven’t gotten their name from a personal reference, find out if they have a reference that you can call. And ask the question: “Why should I choose you?” You may be surprised by the answer.

he trick is making it look easy. Seamless, in fact. It’s a performance not unlike the theatre or the ballet. Theatrics are crucial, facial expressions must be spot on. But this show doesn’t have a traditional stage or curtain call. This one’s carried out in the water. “I’m swimming about 26 hours a week. But with the training camps with the B.C. team, it’s about 32 hours a week,” says Danielle ten Vaanholt. “But that’s what it’s all about. You push yourself and see how far you can go.” It’s been almost a decade since ten Vaanholt signed up for synchronized swimming lessons. The Rockridge secondary school student had tried her hand at dance and soccer previously, but neither stuck. But after striking a hard fought deal with her mom — ten Vaanholt got a brand new toy watch in exchange for agreeing to try synchronized swimming — she started down a sporting path that has led her to the 2011 Canada Winter Games. From Feb. 19 to 27, ten Vaanholt will be representing her country in Halifax, competing in the competition’s duet routine draw. And while the average 17-year-old high school athlete likely never dons the Maple Leaf in their sporting careers, ten Vaanholt’s no stranger to high profile contests. She’s competed in Canadian national tournaments and traveled coast-to-coast opposing swimmers of all ages. “Danielle [tenVaanholt] is the most intense

athlete I have ever worked with. She has had concussions and injured shoulders and we had to force her to take recovery time,” says Danielle Hahn, club coach with the Vancouver Pacific Wave synchronized swimming club and ten Vaanholt’s instructor of four years. “We drive these athletes to exhaustion to make routines feel easy. We make these swimmers swim lengths of the pool with their legs above the water and Danielle never complains. She’s a leader.” Ten Vaanholt’s goal was always to make the Canadian Olympic team. Competing on sports’ highest stage, she says, is the ultimate challenge. She volunteered at Cypress Mountain during the 2010 Winter Games as a “crowd pumper” and “watched dreams come true” for two weeks. She’s witnessed premier athletics from the front row but, as she closes in on graduation, ten Vaanholt says her goals have been shifting lately. She wants to attend McGill University and pursue her other passions, math and science. She’s pondering medical school after her undergrad, but says she has inherited a fierce entrepreneurial spirit from her grandpa — a founding partner of Aqua Guard, one of the companies involved in cleaning up last year’s spill in the Gulf of Mexico — and wouldn’t mind starting a company or two. “Maybe a doctor, maybe chemical engineering. But what my grandpa’s done has been very inspiring to me. I don’t know yet,” she says. “But either way, it’ll be go big or go home.”

Best thing about gymnastics? “The competition. I don’t like to lose.”

Do you play other sports? “Field hockey. I’m going to Orlando with the under-16 West Van Field Hockey Club from February 8-14. I went to the same tournament two years ago. It was really fun. The outcome was important but you also want to make sure you have a good time.” Who is your role model? “My Grandpa. He’s strong. He doesn’t rely on other people. He builds houses and gets the job done.” Favourite saying? “Everything happens for a reason. My Dad says it.” Favourite meal? “Perogies...and ribs....well not together of course. My Mom makes them.” How may text messages do you get a day? “[Laughing] I don’t know... I had about 50 today. That would be about average.”

Tom and the Tea Cup game From Day 1 to his last at the mike, Larscheid has been one of a kind.

B

roadcasting has been Tom Larscheid’s cup of tea for almost 50 years. That’s rather appropriate because I can recall in some detail the very first time I heard the voice of the loquacious, longtime Vancouver Canucks’ and B.C. Lions’ colour commentator. It was long before he became an icon of the airwaves. And it actually did involve a teacup, as will be explained momentarily. This Thursday evening Larscheid will be bestowed with the prestigious Jack Diamond Sports Personality of the Year Award at the Jewish Community Centre Sports Dinner at the Hyatt Regency. And in September he will be inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in the media category during its annual banquet. Larscheid arrived in 1962 to play for the B.C. Lions, via Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was born on April 6, 1940; then California, where he grew up from age 11; and finally Utah State University, where he was an All-American running back. But Larscheid found himself with a knee injury during the 1963 season, unable to play in that season’s Grey Cup and uncertain of his future in the game. He did not play in 1964 and his attempt at a comeback ended permanently on July 15, 1965, during an exhibition game at Empire Stadium when his knee gave way as he was tackled by Calgary’s all-star defensive tackle Don Luzzi. While out of action in 1964, LARSCHEID’S CUP OF TEA - Tom L Larscheid sometimes found Larscheid (above) smiles and relaxes himself behind a microphone, with a cup of tea – appropriately Earl w something he enjoyed right Grey, as in Grey Cup of course – as G from the get-go. he celebrates retirement from his h On Oct. 29, 1964, he was broadcasting career and while our b the public address announcer ccolumnist recalls the first time he heard at UBC’s annual Tea Cup Larscheid, at UBC’s Tea Cup Game in Game, a powder puff foot1964 (left). 1 ball game – but with pads Above: Len Corben photo A and tackling – between the LLeft: UBC Campus 65 yearbook photo Nursing Panhandlers and the Home Ec Homewreckers. Machete attack at Lonsdale Quay Weapon used during the alleged robbery of two foreign exchange students. SEAN KOLENKO S TA F F R E P O RT E R

N

orth Vancouver RCMP have arrested three males in connection with an attack at Lonsdale Quay Friday morning, in which a machete was allegedly used to rob two foreign students. Shortly after midnight on Jan. 28, police say two Korean exchange students were at the bus loop at

Lonsdale Quay, with a group of friends. While waiting for a bus, the group was approached by three suspects who demanded the students turn over their cellphones and wallets at knife point. Police say one of the suspects then used a machete to attack one of the students, allegedly striking Cpl. Peter DeVries him in the head, causing a gash that required seven stitches and 18 staples to close. The student was struck with enough force that machete penetrated five millimetres into his skull. By the time police arrived on the scene, the suspects had fled.

COLD LASER HEALING POWER AVAILABLE ON THE NORTH SHORE Learn how Theralase can help you. Treatable conditions include: lower back pain, neck pain, arthritis, hip pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee pain, soft tissue problems. “I use the Theralase laser to keep my throwing arm healthy. It reduces fatigue and allows me to play at my peak, game after game.”

Both males were rushed to hospital and released after a short stay. The student with the head injury is expected to make a full recovery. The other student suffered only minor injuries in the attack. Cpl. Peter DeVries, spokesman for the North Van RCMP, told The Outlook the attack was completely unprovoked and not indicative of a problem in the heavily-used area. Blair Benedict and Christopher Lamber, both 18-yearold from North Vancouver, and one 17-year-old youth from Surrey have been charged with aggravated assault. Investigators expect Crown counsel to contemplate adding charges of robbery, assault and various breaches of parole conditions.

Stoking the fire North Van Arts Council unveils new exhibition exploring the ‘utility and magic’ of campfires. GREG HOEKSTRA S TA F F R E P O RT E R

T

here’s just something about a campfire. The crackles, pops and hisses of a burning log. The soothing glow. The warmth that emanates from flickering flames. Nothing bonds a group of people together quite like it. Beginning this week, North Vancouver’s CityScape gallery will explore that theme — the “utility and magic of a campfire” — in its latest exhibition. The show, a collaborative effort of six Vancouver artists, will recall the narrative nature of a traditional campfire, while also adding a contemporary twist, says exhibition coordinator Jo Dunlop. “It will be interesting to see the diverse works and the artists’ diverse takes on the campfire,” says Dunlop. “The subject matter is something you don’t see often in a gallery.” The artists —Andrei Bus, Norman Coloma, Martin Krykorka, Marcus Jolly, Roland Meier and Joelle Sept — have created an eclectic body of work for the show, including carvings, found objects, sculptures, video, photography and paintings. Sept, a painter and illustrator who works on the North Shore, says her contribution to the show — watercolour renderings of objects that might be found in the ashes of a campfire — is meant to prompt thought and questions about the nature of a fire. “My contribution to the show looks at the destructive nature of a fire and the way in which things are transformed by fire,” Sept says. “And also about how stories can be implied when someone chooses to burn something in a campfire... stories were a big thing for all of us.” The other featured artists, she says, experimented with everything from photographing driftwood to painting on a charcoal ground. As part of the exhibition, the North Vancouver Community Arts Council is planning a large community campfire at Shipbuilders Square to “celebrate the spirits of camaraderie” on Feb. 19. Dunlop says the event will feature music, performances, storytelling, free food and beverages, and will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Scouts Canada on the North Shore. “Campfires: An Exhibition” runs from Feb. 4 to Feb. 26 at the CityScape Community Art Space, located at 335 Lonsdale Ave. in North Vancouver. There will be a grand opening tonight (Feb. 3) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and an artist talk on Saturday (Feb. 5) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the gallery. For more info call 604-988-6844 or visit www.nvartscouncil.ca. ghoekstra@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/greghoekstra

He has been a member of Handsworth Football team for almost a year now and has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Hirad is a very active boy and likes many outdoor activities. He likes skiing on Grouse Mountain or in Whistler and in the summer time, kayaking in Deep Cove or hiking in the North Shore mountains. Since grade 4 he has been growing his curly hair — and now, in grade 6, he has donated his hair to the Canadian Cancer Society. That’s been an incredible challenge!
