2011 will be the beginning of a new decade for all of us, but at the Chamber we are embracing this decade with some exciting new events! Keep your eyes open for these opportunities to network and build your business with new contacts and chances to restore old ones. As our economy stalled in the past few years, many businesses took the quieter times to rebuild relationships, improve productivity

and trim costs. As times improve, it is easy to forget the lessons learned and thus we urge everyone to take a moment to solidify the knowledge gained so that in 2011 you will be working on your business rather than in your business. A few tips to help you along include setting aside time to network and making it a goal to find one new ‘partner’ at every event. That partner could be someone who gives you work or visa versa; or perhaps

someone who can sing your praises to others who are interested in your goods or services. Using networking to promote your business is never a waste of time if you head into an event with this tip in mind. So now that you are at the event, how do you make contact with others? One given is to ensure you have your 20 second infomercial ready to present – this is also known as your elevator pitch given to the person who asks, “so what is your business?” Make sure to have plenty of business cards, arrive early and stay late. Happy New Year!

Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a former North Shore resident accused of swindling people out of more than $60,000 during the 2010 Olympics. According to police, 31-year-old Sean McConnell Stuart of West Vancouver duped dozens of victims between December 2008 and February 2009 with promises Police say Sean McConnell Stuart of tickets to Olympic events. solicited individuals to buy tickets for Using websites such as Olympic events, including the men’s Craigslist and Kijiji, police gold medal hockey game. File photo believe Stuart solicited individuals to buy tickets for Olympic events such as the opening ceremonies, figure skating and the men’s gold medal hockey game. Stuart would allegedly collect a 50 per cent payment, with a promise to follow through with the tickets after he received them from VANOC. Despite signing a contract in many cases, police say Stuart never delivered on his end of the bargains. In fact, investigators have since learned that Stuart never had a VANOC account. Stuart is now being sought by police on a number of charges, including fraud over $5,000, theft and possession of property obtained by crime. ‘They stole the Christ out of Christmas’ North Van church in shock after thieves pluck baby Jesus from nativity scene.

t was shortly after supper on Dec. 27 Father John Brioux when Father John Brioux first noticed baby Jesus had gone missing. Brioux, the congregation leader at North Vancouver’s St. Paul’s Catholic Church, was preparing to ring the church bell before evening mass when he spotted a gaping hole in the church’s outdoor nativity scene where the baby Christ normally lays. “At first, I didn’t want to believe it,” says Brioux. “I thought maybe one of our members had brought it inside for safe keeping, but after some searching eventually it sunk in. Baby Jesus was gone.” Brioux isn’t sure exactly when the sacred statue was stolen, but he knows it wasn’t until after the holiday. On Dec. 25, the little Lord Jesus remained asleep on the hay, he says. The following night there may have been some youths drinking on or around the church’s property. Brioux says he found an empty alcohol container in the bushes and cigarette butts all over the building’s front steps. The church, located at 424 W. Esplanade Ave. on the Squamish Nation reserve, has been subject to minor thefts and vandalism before, says Brioux. This incident, however, has struck a nerve. “It’s mean-spirited and I think it’s suggestive of a mindset or attitude that is not good. It’s not respectful of other people’s religious beliefs,” he says. “When you think of it, they stole the Christ out of Christmas, and they left us feeling quite sad.” Brioux says the nativity scene will remain on the church’s front steps until Sunday to mark Jesus’s baptism. He and his parishioners are hopeful that whoever took the statue will realize the error of their ways and return it to its rightful place, no questions asked. “It’s an old nativity set, so it would be impossible to find a replacement,” says Brioux. “We hope whoever has it brings it back. People walk back and forth here all the time. They notice it’s not there.”

Local pawn shop helps save Christmas for some
Season made a little merrier for North Shore families who needed a little extra cash to get by. MARIA SPITALE-LEISK CONTRIBUTOR
A
poorly lit back room, stolen merchandise galore and a sketchy character sitting behind a cage of solid steel bars in no way describes the North Shore Pawn Shop in Lower Lonsdale. During Christmastime, pawn shop owners Ron and Christine, who requested their last names not be used for this story, helped make the season a bit brighter for many North Shore families who needed a little extra cash to get by. A calendar on the wall behind the shop’s counter is etched with X’s, highlighting the peak periods for the pawn shop: pension, welfare and other government assistance cheques will arrive on those days. December is a particularly busy time of the year for the couple’s business, which offers 30-day loans against personal effects as collateral. With an attractive interest rate of five per cent a month – the service charge attached to the loan – for some people, it’s the most economical way to fund the cost of Christmas. Shanti, a local woman living on disability benefits, used her $200 loan from the pawn shop to buy food and Christmas presents for her daughter. At the beginning of December she decided to put up her laptop and external hard drive, complete with important files and photos that are not backed up, as collateral. “They have always been friendly here,” says Shanti, of the owners of the North Shore Pawn Shop. She gets choked up as she talks about the reason she is back at the pawn shop on this particular day. Shanti is going to use the money to purchase a special going-away present for her daughter who is moving to permanently live with her father in Montreal. The North Shore’s only pawn shop boasts a diverse clientele: from those just struggling to Khot-La-Cha make ends meet to doctors, lawyers and other affluent professionals. “These people are rich on paper; asset rich, not cash rich,” explains Ron. He gives the example of a mid-20s, Maserati• Handcarved totem poles • Plaques, Bowls, Rattles driving customer of his who regularly pawns • Moccasins, Clothing • Silver & Gold Jewellery high-end watches. Christine is eagerly anticipating some new stock on this Wednesday morning; she predicts an influx of people will come calling, with rejected Christmas presents under their arms. Starving students who can’t afford tuition or books will bring in their grandmother’s or great We care about your safety on the road grandmother’s jewelry and borrow on it, says Christine. “We see a lot of that,” she says. “It’s not like AUTOMOTIVE years ago when people would cherish jewelry.” Service you can Trust After Christmas, people will bring in their stillServicing all makes & models wrapped presents with price tags intact. FINAL FEW D AY S
North Shore Pawnshop owners Christine and Ron with a pawnshop treasure – a 1968 Les Paul guitar. Rob Newell photo
It seems people from all walks of life need emergency cash at some point or another, and Ron and Christine have heard all the stories since they started the business in 2000. A newspaper owner once attempted to pawn his car to pay seven of his staff members; another businessman kept his company afloat during the 2005 bus strike by purchasing electronics, borrowing money against them and then returning them to the store within the two-week time period. Of course the North Shore Pawn Shop is also full of gems for sale – literally. There are ornate rings in every shape, size, and colour displayed in glass cases around the entire perimeter of the shop. Sometimes Christine will reinvent an old “beat up ring” and breathe new life into it with a new setting or stone. “I don’t have the heart to melt jewelry,” she says. Other coveted items - abandoned by their owners who couldn’t afford to get their property out of hawk - include expensive power tools perfectly arranged on a shelf in the centre aisle and the electric guitar wailing at the front of the store next to other electronics. Then there are the more unusual finds at the pawn shop, like the bearskin rug complete with a frozen, toothy mug, or the replica Second World War British militia Wilkinson sword. Historical artifacts are of particular interest to Ron. He has a land title deed from 1772 from England that is hand-done in calligraphy and stamped with red wax seals and he collects anything from WW1 and WW2, including victory medals. One of his more prized possessions is an execution certificate, from 1936, for the last prisoner to be hung in Quebec; it’s signed by the judge and contains the original tube that it was sent to the doctor’s office in to be validated. The decree – which says the man who killed his family should be hung until dead – has been appraised at $7,000, he says. Ron and Christine have twice been offered a big chunk of change to do a two-season run on History Channel’s reality show - Pawn Stars. The couple didn’t accept, saying they wanted to protect their clients and didn’t like how staged the show is. The pair says they don’t want that type of notoriety and they would rather be known for their kindness and community spirit. For many years, the North Shore Pawn Shop has helped support the local police and fire detachments, animal shelters and BC Children’s Hospital. newsroom@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/nsoutlook

` new year A is unfolding – like a blossom with
petals curled tightly concealing the
beauty within. – Anon.
Design principles North Vancouver’s Ernest McCrank spent years working in the wilderness. Now he designs products to help others navigate that challenging terrain.
I
n the late 1990s, a number of provinces in China were faced with an interesting problem: residents were vandalizing, then stealing, in-ground parking meters. It happened with such frequency the government couldn’t justify staying with the current system. That’s where North Vancouver’s Ernest McCrank enters the story. Still a student at the time — McCrank was wrapping up a Master’s degree in Industrial Design at the University of Calgary (U of C) — he was charged with designing a new, individual parking meter about the size of an iPod, that would sit on the dashboard of one’s car. That new meter would hold a pre-loaded amount of parking time that a motorist could purchase at local convenience stores. COFFEE To check the device, parking WITH attendants use a compatible piece that reads the meter Sean Kolenko using radio frequencies. And, skolenko@northshore outlook.com in a staple of the pay-forparking world, if you’ve got enough money in the meter, you’re good. If you don’t, well, you get the picture. “First and foremost it’s about constant learning. It’s all discovery, realization and interaction and knowing that what I’m doing matters,” says McCrank of his design philosophy. “I enjoy seeking inspiration and seeking an understanding of the world around me.” Long before McCrank turned his attention to conceiving and shaping products, an interest in the world — particularly the outdoors — led the 42-year-old to his first profession. A graduate of Lakehead University’s Outdoor Recreation program, McCrank spent years building ski jumps and planting and cutting trees across the country. But at one such gig in Whitecourt, Alta., McCrank, who says he’d grown a bit weary of his profession by that point, decided to make a change. A course calendar for the industrial design program from the U of C had been kicking around his truck for a while, so he packed up his gear, quit the job and drove the nearly 450 kilometres to Calgary to sign up for another round of post-secondary education. McCrank says diving back into the books after years touring around the woods of Canada was a bit of a shock because academia, particularly his new chosen field, had moved beyond the pages and bindings of the book. McCrank had to learn
his way around a computer. “That was the biggest shock, for sure,” he says, with a chuckle. “Prior to school I had no interest in computers. But I got into 3D modeling and it blew my mind. Now, I use it everyday. I liked tools before, now, I guess, I look at my computer as one huge toolbox.” And the rest, as they say, is history. In 2003, McCrank moved to the North Shore to work for G3, a company that designs outdoor equipment. In his his four years with G3, McCrank designed everything from avalanche safety tools, to ski bindings and accessories, to shovel blades. A bone saw he worked on for the company was even featured in the ID in NV art show at North Van’s Cafe for Contemporary Art last fall. The show, curated by local artist Adrian Boston, celebrated industrial design being produced on the North Shore and highlighted, amongst other companies, Rayne Longboards and Arc’teryx clothing. In 2008 McCrank launched his own business — the North Vancouver-based firm Bull Monkey Industrial Design. McCrank says self-employment has been a bit of an uphill climb, but 2010 proved to be a busy year. McCrank’s currently working on a medical device with a team from Calgary that assesses sleep apnea patients. He says it’s still in the prototype stage, but when completed the device will help gauge the extent of one’s sleep apnea and the needs of a patient depending on its reading. And he says he wants to diversify his work even further. Because of his experience working in the back country, designing outdoor products was a comfortable leap for his new pursuits. But, looking ahead, McCrank says his goal is to ensure all his work, regardless of its application, is not only good for the pocketbook, but for the environment. “It’s just not enough to design something. You have to ask yourself whether or not it’s the right thing to design,” he says. “Aside from the money, you have to ask ‘how does this help people?’ Other than that, the ideal scenario for me is just to keep working.” skolenko@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/seankolenko

Cost for senior care soars in 2011 January could be bleak for seniors living in publicly funded care homes, most of whom will be paying significantly more for care this year than they did two years ago. A senior with an income of $22,000, for example, will pay an extra $1,956 in 2011 compared to 2009, while others will pay much more because 80% of their aftertax income will go to pay for care. This policy will have a harsher effect on dependent spouses, who have always relied on their husband’s pension. They will find it particularly hard to pay the higher fees and still cover the costs of medicine, dental care and add-on care home services such as television and the telephone because the family’s income will be significantly reduced under the 80% rule. These are the woman from traditional families who chose not to work during their child-bearing years and have limited access to Canada Pension Plan or private pensions. Sure, they can apply for reduced rates on the basis of hardship but this may be a drastic step for some and they may not even qualify without depleting their assets. They could also consider the radical step of divorcing their husbands so they can sue for half the pension but this, too, would have limited appeal. For these families, selling the family home or tapping the incomes of sons and daughters may be the only way they can make ends meet. Was this the intent of the new rate structure? At first glance, it appears the government did everything it could to make the new fee structure more equitable for British Columbians. It lowered the fees for 25% of seniors, split the rate increase over two years to make it easier for people to adjust, and public care still costs half of what it costs in private facilities. With the greying of the baby boomer population, it makes sense to make seniors pay more for the care they receive because even at the maximum monthly rate of $2,932, they still pay less than half of what it costs for 24-hour nursing care in a public care home. But for a vast majority of seniors, this policy appears to have some unintended consequences and they face some serious belt-tightening in 2011. –Black Press

— LET TERS TO T HE EDITOR — Party discipline is unconstitutional Editor, Re: The year of the independent MLA (B.C. Views, northshoreoutlook.com.) Tom Fletcher’s column gives an accurate perspective on our current state of politics. Taxpayer revolt, MLA recalls, revolts in party ranks, both leaders driven from office – all happening around the same time – may be signaling a fracture in the basement of our politics. When you step back and trace back the prime cause of all these events, it all comes down to one common denominator; the inordinate concentration of power in a few people, and the abuse of it. Those few who hold power in our system do so by the imposition of ‘party discipline’ on elected mem-
bers, and with this device they control the political system completely. Party discipline is not a law, but a convention, as are most things in the Westminster parliamentary system; in fact it is not written anywhere. However, revolts have been inevitable throughout time because this doctrine, when abused, clashes with all that is inherent in natural human behavior. It usurps the authentic self and individual identity of the elected members and subjugates them to the sole purpose of subservience to the party leaders. The voting public feel they are left without fair representation in important decisions that affect them. There have always eventually been revolts against this squarepeg-in-a-round-hole control strategy when it has been used badly, just like what is occurring now. The Canadian Charter of Rights
and Freedoms section 2(b) guarantees the right of everyone to have their own opinion, beliefs, thoughts and the free expression thereof. Section 32(b) states these rights apply specifically to provincial legislatures. These provisions in law are abridged when anyone is subject to censure or punishment for exercising these rights, which is exactly what party discipline does. In the cases of MLAs Bill Bennett and Bob Simpson, the law was broken because both of these men spoke according to their Charter rights and suffered censure and punishment for doing so. The Charter has provisions for court remedy in cases of contravention, so these men could take legal action against their former parties.

Breathtaking journey into the abyss of Howe Sound In the waters off Horseshoe Bay, experienced free divers are exploring new frontiers by reaching depths of 270 feet – using only the oxygen in their lungs.
MARIA SPITALE-LEISK CONTRIBUTOR
J
ill Yoneda’s body starts to feel flushed 160 feet or so below the surface of the frigid waters in Howe Sound. Her ears may start ringing – like a warning bell telling her she’s been down long enough – but she normally just ignores it. This is her alone time, to get up close and personal with B.C.’s marine life in their natural habitat and she cherishes every precious moment of it. Curious seals come faceto-face with Yoneda and they exchange a playful smile before she seamlessly glides away, her feet fused together in a monofin. Approximately four minutes have sluggishly passed since Yoneda gulped in the biggest breath of air she could muster and disappeared under the water. She isn’t wearing an oxygen tank. The explosion of colours that surround Yoneda – the beds of strawberry sea anemones and starfish dressed in brilliant hues of red, orange, yellow and pink – slowly blur together as her vision narrows. Now her chest is tightening and the contractions in her diaphragm begin. Again, Yoneda tunes out what she calls the “bad monkey” on her shoulder. Relaxing during the contractions is the trick because you can still squeeze a bit more oxygen out at that point. “If you can get past that voice in your head, knowing that you don’t actually really need to breathe, then you relax through those contractions and the pain,” explains Yoneda.
Holding her breath Competitive free-diving competitions are not for the faint of heart. Yoneda, a former West Van resident, was a volunteer paramedic at the world championships in
Vancouver in 2004. It was her first introduction to the sport and she was overwhelmed by what she saw: purple-faced free divers with their eyes glazed over, cracking smiles through bluish-tinged lips. “I thought [free divers] were absolutely nuts,” Yoneda says grinning widely, as if to indicate that she is now just as crazy as they are. She also witnessed some extremely convincing “dead man floats” in the static apnea contest where divers hold their breath for as long as they can in the water. One contestant held his breath underwater for 7 minutes and 10 seconds. The current world record is a staggering 11 minutes, 35 seconds. Yoneda was intrigued, so much so that she decided to take a weekend course through Performance Freediving in Vancouver. “The very first time I tried holding my breath I don’t even think I made it a minute, and then I panicked,” she recalls. Free diving is a sport of mental strength, so any feelings of anxiety must be checked at the water’s edge. If you don’t black out after at least one underwater excursion then you aren’t testing your body’s limitations, she says. Just two years after taking her first class, Yoneda was already one of the country’s top free divers. Her strength is dynamic apnea – underwater distance swimming. In 2008, she held the national record in the discipline: 150 metres. During a recent interview with The Outlook, Yoneda, sitting at the side of the pool at the UBC Aquatic Centre, wrapped up in a towel, looked longingly at the water. Complications from a medical procedure done 10 years ago left the 36-year-old nursing student with a condition called foot drop. While on land, Yoneda can’t lift her foot up; it just hangs and drags if she doesn’t wear a brace. But it’s a different story underwater where Yoneda’s feet are locked into a monofin, allowing her to move freely. “In the water I’m just as fluid and graceful as everyone else,” she smiles.
Going deep So how is it that, on only one breath of air, humans are able to travel to such great underwater depths? Eric Fattah’s record free dive of 270 feet at Ansell Point near Horseshoe Bay is 40 feet farther than the distance from the deck of the Capilano Suspension Bridge to the surface of the water in the deep canyon below. The deepest free dive ever recorded is 214 metres (702 feet) in the No-Limits Apnea discipline in which divers use a weighted sled to descend, and then rely on an inflatable bag to return

them to the surface. Dr. John Fitz-Clarke is a Halifax-based physician who has studied the physiology of free-diving in great depth. He explains how humans are equipped with something called a mammalian diving reflex. “It’s like a survival reflex that kicks in and lowers the body’s oxygen consumption and just delivers oxygen to the critical tissues like the heart and brain,” he says. Fitz-Clarke used the 2004 world free-diving championships in Vancouver to collect research for his studies on the adverse effects of free diving. Hypoxic blackouts – where a diver becomes unconscious, typically as they reach the surface, due to a lack of oxygen – are a common occurrence among free divers. Meanwhile, decompression sickness and fluid accumulation in the lungs have also been observed by Fitz-Clarke. “Studies have been done, blood tests and so on, that have not shown any real adverse effects [of free diving],” he says. However, whether there is a depth where the lungs would completely collapse is the big question that Fitz-Clarke wants answered. He’s developed a computer model that simulates human physiology and can predict what might happen to the human body as divers attempt to reach even more harrowing depths. “It’s a little bit controversial right now,” Fitz-Clarke admits. “I made an estimate that the lungs would collapse in some divers around 230 metres, based on some predications based on anatomy and physiology.” Still, he says free diving remains a bit of a venture into the unknown. “The way I kind of explain it is that humans have gone to a lot of extremes: we have climbed up to the top of the highest mountains in the world, we have gone into space, but free diving is kind of a frontier where records are still being set,” says Fitz-Clarke.

Back in the water Yoneda admits she was a little antsy after being sidelined all of last year when doctors discovered a previously undetected hole in her heart. “It’s like a backflow of blood that you don’t want to have,” she explains. “My heart surgeon told me that I was at an increased risk for a stroke or a heart attack.” Coming from a family of medicine – Yoneda’s dad is an orthopedic surgeon and her mom is a nurse – she guesses they would have been happier if she had backed off on free diving after the diagnosis. Her mom is, in fact, deathly afraid of water. “I think she had a near-drowning experience when she was little,” Yoneda says. “She can’t even have showers; she will only have a bath because she doesn’t like the water splashing in her face.” Then in 2008, Yoneda helped her mother break through the fear in a baptism by water of sorts. They were in Israel for her sister’s wedding and Yoneda was amazed that she got her mother to come into the Dead Sea with her. “I held her the whole time,” says Yoneda affectionately. “She was nervous, but she felt safe with me holding her, and she laughed.”
Performance Freediving World champion free diver Mandy-Rae Cruickshank and her husband, national free-diving coach Kirk Krack, have trained nearly every free diver in North America, including Jill Yoneda. Tiger Woods, who uses free-diving skills for spear fishing, is also a former student. The free-diving duo was also recruited for the filming of the 2010 academy award-winning documentary, “The Cove.” The movie vividly reveals how, each year, hundreds of migrating dolphins are herded into a hidden cove in Taiji, Japan, where they are netted by Japanese fishermen and stabbed to death with spears and knives over the side of small boats. Because free divers are, for the most part, inconspicuous, Krack and Cruickshank were selected to dive into the cove in the middle of the night and plant hidden hydrophones and cameras in the bay. “We were being tailed by people from the fishing co-op we assume, whenever we went out of the hotel,” recalls Cruickshank. Other people who tried to get footage from the cove were beaten for their efforts. Through their Vancouver-based company Performance Freediving, the couple teaches courses locally at Ansell Point, as well as all over North America. A basic, two-day, free-diving course is $345, and is offered three times a year in Vancouver: spring, summer and fall. The only equipment required is a mask, snorkel, fins and a wetsuit.

very time Nicola Morgan picks up her paint brush it’s like taking the first step on a new journey. “Each piece takes me to a new place, says the Vancouver Island-born artist and instructor from her West Vancouver home. “I never know just where I’m going. Throughout the years her work has changed shape and form several times, but as diverse as it may seem at first glance, it always seems to offer a glimpse into Morgan’s personal life. Nearly 20 years ago, when her three children were still young, Morgan Painter Nicola Morgan’s work will be on says her world was quite display from Jan. 12 to Feb. 23 at the different in nature. As a North Vancouver District Library Gallery result, so too was her art. in Lynn Valley. Rob Newell photo At the time, Morgan made part of her living writing and illustrating children’s books. While doing so, she also dabbled in elaborate mixed-media collages, which she says were often childlike in form, but allegorical in nature. “When I was raising my kids I was living in a very happy, colourful world, she says. “There’s no question that was reflected in my work. Fast forward a couple decades to the economic downturn of the late2000s, in which many of Morgan’s friends and acquaintances lost not only their savings, but a sense of security. “It’s as though we went to a world where nothing was very safe, Morgan recalls. “People’s lives were falling apart. Things seemed to be radically swinging from one direction to another. It’s no coincidence, then, that her artwork underwent a transformation from colourful collages to dark, brooding canvases splashed with images of explosive forest fires. “Eventually, I came to terms with it. And I realized that much like a forest fire, [the recession] was a natural thing to go through, Morgan says. “It was a cleansing type of time. When her marriage broke up shortly after, Morgan says she went through a period of expressive black and white drawings — pictures she never shared with anyone else. “I was working a lot of things out on paper. Eventually, those drawings blossomed into the floral work that she has been working on more recently — bright colourful flowers blooming out of the darkness. “Again, I think that’s a reflection of my own life and how I’m starting to pull myself out of a dark place, she says. “I’m really enjoying these paintings. I’m enjoying the depth, the layers, and the movement of the paint. So far the series consists of 15 paintings of all different sizes, which will be on display starting Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the North Vancouver District Library Gallery at 1277 Lynn Valley Rd. “These paintings are like thoughts or ideas, Morgan says. “Some are big, but others are little... just passing thoughts in the bigger scheme of things. The show, which is being hosted by the North Vancouver Community Arts Council, will run until Feb. 23. An opening reception is planned for Saturday, Jan. 15, at the gallery from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information visit www.nvartscouncil.ca or call 604-988-6844. ghoekstra@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/greghoekstra

Hell of a ride The Seymour Kids grew up riding the only mountain that would accept them. Luckily, it was in their backyard. Now, more than 20 years later, Kids’ founding member Kevin Sansalone is still at it and Mount Seymour still enjoys the notoriety those youngsters brought. SEAN KOLENKO S TA F F R E P O RT E R
A
t the time, the technology just wasn’t there. There were no magazines or videos for inspiration; no trade shows to buy the newest gear. All they had was a cheap plastic snowboard from Zellers and a local mountain that supported them. “When we started, in 1987-1988, we were just going into high school. My friend bought this snowboard but we thought we weren’t allowed to use them on any mountains,” says Kevin Sansalone. “But Seymour accepted us, so we all went and got one. The rest is history.” Sansalone, born and raised in Deep Cove but now based in Whistler, is one of the initial members of the Seymour Kids. Now a fixture of B.C. snowboarding lore, the crew evolved rather organically. Sansalone says he and his friends Derek Scott and Sarj Varo-Doven just wanted to ride every day. And, they did. But as they got better — Sansalone says the group benefited from the night skiing available at Seymour — they started to carve out a reputation at events they would attend. The group was young in comparison to others in the scene at the time, and stood out as a result. The Seymour Kids moniker was subsequently born out of that age gap. And with growing notoriety came financial opportunities. At 16, Sansalone became a sponsored rider. Then, the Seymour Kids started making snowboarding films. The group attracted more and more members, notably North Van’s Devun Walsh, and started to gain a reputation for their antics off the hill as well. “As we got older, we got a bit more mischievous,” says Sansalone, with a chuckle. “We started being known as the ‘Skids,’ a bunch of hooligans snowboarding, making movies, drinking and partying.” The last Skids movie was finished in 2004. Sansalone has since developed a new production company, Sandbox Snowboarding. He’s grown the business to include a helmet-making division and has recently started to make his own high-end snowboards called White Gold, named after the neighbourhood in Whistler where he currently resides. And while personal acclaim has been one byproduct of a life in the snow, Sansalone isn’t the only one who’s enjoyed time in the spotlight as a result of the Seymour Kids. Eddie Wood, general manager of Mount Seymour, said the mountain has benefitted from letting the boys, all those years ago, hit the slopes

with those bargain-basement boards. “We embraced snowboarding from the beginning, we really said ‘let’s do this’,” says Wood. “Photographers came up from Los Angeles to shoot them. We built jumps for them and they brought a lot of publicity to Seymour as a result.” These days, it’s all-too-normal to see a lineup filled with snowboarders waiting to get on the Mystery Peak Chair. Wood notes the alpine sports world has always been dominated by skiing, but he says the influence of a handful of kids on the North Shore beginning more than two decades ago, can hardly be quantified. They changed mountain culture. “We all need stars, and these kids were gods,” he says, proudly. “They were what people aspired to and the fact that they were locals was huge.” skolenko@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/seankolenko

Best thing about your coach? “He’s really understanding. He’s not a dictator. You never have to worry that’s he’s thinking of himself. He’s always looking out for the best interests for you and the team.” Best thing about being captain? “I can do whatever I want. No, just kidding. It’s nice having the trust from your teammates to lead them.”
Favourite colour? “Blue. Capilano Blue. And I love purple, so they’re both probably my favourite. But I think it would be the right thing to say blue.” Favourite place to visit? “Good question. Europe… Austria. The whole of my Dad’s side of the family lives there. I’ve been there three times; the whole summer after Grade 11.” Favourite athlete? “I knew all the answers until you asked the questions. Ummh… LeBron… no, Kobe… no, LeBron James. He’s amazing. He works so hard and has a good head. He’s in it to win.”

hree contenders are now vying for the chance to square off against North Vancouver MP Andrew Saxton in the next federal election. Taleeb Noormohamed, former vice president of strategy and partnerships for VANOC, announced recently that he will seek the federal Liberal nomination. Noormohamed, a North Vancouverite who has studied at both Princeton and Oxford universities, joins District of North Vancouver councillor Roger Bassam and former Nunavut MLA Kevin O’Brien in the threeway race. In an email to The Outlook, Noormohamed said he’s excited to be running for the nomination in North Vancouver — the community where he grew up and his family started its first business. “North Van has been home to my family for almost Noormohamed 30 years and I would be proud to represent its people in Ottawa,” wrote Noormohamed. “I have experience solving difficult problems, bringing people together, and managing a bottom line. I’d like to apply these skills to a vision of our country that speaks to taking care of one another and restoring our reputation as a thoughtful global citizen.” Before working for VANOC, Noormohamad served as director of the secretariat reviewing the Air India Flight 182 bombing and senior advisor to MP Bob Rae. He has also worked in the private sector as a technology consultant and in 2007 was awarded the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award for his volunteer work and contributions to the community. ghoekstra@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/greghoekstra
