A marriage of military-inspired jackets and soft, feminine blouses is a flirtatious fashion trend for spring and summer 2011. And what’s brilliant about these polar opposite threads is that you can mix and match both for a harmonious look. You’ll notice plenty of pastel colours – which are always in season this time of the year – in both the military, and romance-inspired apparel. Discover white eyelet blouses and lace skirts that whisper Mediterranean romance, with clothing lines by Moreno, and Sandwich; then turn to J Brand for skinny cargos and cropped pants. The “shootie” – a hybrid of a stylish shoe and boot – offers the versatility needed to achieve the look of military romance. Khrio has designed a leather, stacked shoe with a funky zipper up the inside. These uber comfortable shoes are drenched in pastel tones that create a chameleon effect that works with any outfit. Meanwhile, handbags – inspired by a ton of metal – satisfy the military fashion component for spring 2011. Husband and wife Dana and Melanie Harvey had a fashion epiphany while installing seatbelts in their 1950 Buick. They decided to start making handbags fashioned out of seatbelts, from their one-car garage in California. Now it’s ten years later, and Harveys seatbelt bags – in an array of styles, from fancy, ruffled totes embellished with bling to multicoloured, vibrant beach bags – are all the rage. Have you checked your eye health recently? Macular degeneration – early detection is the key. The Macula: is the centre focus point of the retina inside the eye. Any damage to this area can cause significant loss of vision including driving, face recognition and reading. Early detection is the key to preventing or delaying vision loss. In the case of the most common form, “dry AMD unless it’s detected in a routine eye exam, you may not realize that you have the disease until it reaches an advanced visually permanent stage.
Optomeyes has recently acquired a new diagnostic technology for their patients. It’s called the Macular Pigment Optical Density scanner. With this new technology the Doctors are now able to detect one of the major risks factors for macular degeneration (AMD) years before vision starts to deteriorate. In addition to this instrument Digital Retinal Imaging can detect many other degenerative changes much earlier than previously possible. Retinal imaging is conducted on all patients at the clinic and must be done to ensure proper ocular health monitoring at every eye examination. Many of the AMD risk factors can be controlled or even eliminated. This is one of the main reasons why regular eye examinations with macular pigment scanning, especially after the age of 40 are so important for long term eye and vision health.

North Shore sisters Patty Nayel and Christina Hidalgo are sweethearts of the environment. Their earth-friendly gowns and jewels - which grace wedding ceremonies rooted in environmental sustainability - offer brides a sense of style that is glamourous and not at all granola. “So many brides were having organic catering, and were using recycled paper, but they were not able to buy a sustainable dress,” explains Nayel, the designer behind Pure Magnolia. It was fate when West Vancouver bride-to-be and fellow vendor Chelsea Eady met Nayel at an eco-wedding fair last year. One of the dresses that Nayel had on display at her booth caught Eady’s eye: a mermaid-style gown with whimsical rooster feathers in shades of royal blue and auburn protruding upwards from under an ivory skirt, right at the bust line; the feathers then continue trailing down one side of the dress. “She must have come over a dozen times to look at it,” Nayel reveals. “I told her ‘This dress is for you’”. Eady donned that dress on a beautiful fall day last September, after a few cosmetic changes. The gown was transformed into an A-line skirt, and blue crinoline was added underneath to tie in perfectly with Eady’s “washed up on the beach” wedding theme. “I felt like the star in an earthy fairytale,” Eady recalls of her beachfront nuptials to Justin in West Van. Nayel started creating eco-friendly gowns in 2006, following her graduation from the fashion design program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She had been working at a high-end lingerie company and noticed there was a lot of waste involved with designing “bias-cut” garments. “There were big corners of fabric, very useable pieces, that were being discarded,” says Nayel. She was able to scoop up armloads of those elegant scraps and has since turned them into trim for her gowns. Meanwhile, the majority of the dresses are structured from a material that is a blend of hemp and silk, the most sustainable fabric available, says Nayel. Hidalgo, a Spark jewelry designer, also has that healthy respect for the environment, which both sisters say was bred into them by way of growing up on the North Shore. Her alluring creations feature intertwined argentium silver or 14 carat gold fill, with splashes of freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals or gemstones. Spark jewellery is delicate and organic in design where no two Chelsea Eady opted for pieces are exactly alike, which is the beauty of handmade jewelan eco-friendly wedding lery,” says Hidalgo. The 93.5 per cent pure silver that she uses last September. for her jewelry contains 100 per cent recycled silver content that Chelsea’s peacock is pretty much tarnish-resistant. Her other bauble features 14 carat feather A-line gown is gold fill, which is made from 85 per cent recycled gold. made from 100 per cent “It is possible to have beautiful, long-lasting jewelry that is cotton bark cloth. both eco-friendly and economical,” affirms Hidalgo.

3PRING #RUSH By MARIA SPITALE-LEISK Photography PETER TAYLOR Outside the spring raindrops are falling, but inside Kiss and Makeup things are warming up as the new spring fashion lines arrive. The makeup and fashion mecca – at Park Royal Village – is infatuated with Cynthia Vincent threads. Vincent’s feminine chic designs exude confidence and are extremely versatile; classic slip dresses and oversized cardigans at are the heart of her collection. Kiss and Makeup model Alexandra Zaytseva strolled into the store in early spring, and the staff couldn’t resist dressing her up in some of the sensational clothes and accessories that dot every corner of the boutique. The Cynthia Vincent long sleeve cardigan is new for spring. This lightweight sheath – in a soft, creamy nude colour – provides a touch of classy warmth for when the sun goes down. It’s a great alternative to your black cardigan from winter. A vintage woven JADEtribe messenger bag brings a hint of funky to an otherwise neutral look. It’s the perfect purse for a day of shopping at Park Royal. Or you can throw a juicy romance novel in the messenger bag and head to the beach at Ambleside. Don’t mess with the crinkled look of the La Fee Maraboutee layered tank dress. This is a fabulous dress to take on a holiday, because the look of the fabric is supposed to be wrinkled. So stuff in it your suitcase and forget ironing it later. You are on vacation, after all. Wedge sandals are a hot item for spring and summer 2011, and the cutest – but more importantly comfortable – pair of sandals is in store at Kiss and Makeup. The Matiko Calista Wedge Sandal, in natural, meshes well with everything from denim cut offs to maxi dresses. Alexandra is wearing jewelry made by Vancouver designer Shereen De Rousseau, whose unique style of recreating vintage pieces with precious stones will definitely turn some heads your way. “Light up the world” is Stila’s spring campaign. So put your best face forward with natural finish oil-free foundation from Stila. Add a sweep of sun bronzer and you’ll have everyone reaffirming that you’re a natural beauty. And don’t leave home without double duty lip and cheek stains – in punchy colours such as cherry and raspberry crush – for quick touchups. Did someone say beer for breakfast? You bet. Skip the Mimosa and go straight for the ale by cleverly pairing this brunch favourite with the crisp, yet soft, citrus character of Lost Coast’s Tangerine Wheat Ale ($17.99 per 6pk) from California. This hefeweizen style of beer has a natural tangerine flavour, added during the brewing process, which cuts nicely through the creamy Hollandaise of the bennies.
Some people suggest a light ale or lager when pairing beer with spicy foods. Your taste buds are so overwhelmed by the heat that you don’t get to appreciate the true character of a bolder beer. At seven per cent alcohol, the Fat Tug IPA from Vancouver Island’s Driftwood Brewery ($5.99 per 650ml) is hoppy and clean, so it works as an aperitif that stands up to even the spiciest of Mexican and Thai appetizers.
For savoury meals with a higher fat content - such as pulled pork or shepherd’s pie - select a beer that provides a balance of subtle sweetness and nutty malt. B.C.’s award-winning A Wee Angry Scotch Ale by Russell Brewery ($6.49 per 650ml) is characterized by a slight smoky aftertaste, which will only enhance the rich barbeque flavour of the pulled pork.

Strolling down the ancient paths of Santorini, in Greece, you will want to go for a breezy chic look: think billowy dresses and white cotton eyelet blouses, with a hint of teal to match the colour of the sea below. And comfortable, yet stylish, footwear is a must-have for these seaside adventures. Neutral-toned sandals with jewel embellishments will draw attention to that

pre-trip pedicure. Back on board the ship, the orchestra is cueing up and the delicacies are being prepped; the evening’s entertainment is about to start. That’s when you come breezing down the polished brass staircase in a sexy cocktail number – paired with jewel-encrusted heels. Located blocks from the ocean, in Caulfield Village, Marilyn’s of West Vancouver (5363 Headland Drive) has the perfect outfit for smooth sailing on your next cruise.

A FRAICHE perspective By MARIA SPITALE-LEISK
It was FATE
that brought acclaimed chef Dino Renaerts to the West Vancouver fine dining scene. He could have cooked at the some of the top culinary destinations in the world: New York, Europe. He had the talent. At one point Renaerts was planning to move to Zurich - where he had landed a job at a two star Michelin-rated restaurant. But then he broke his leg skiing. The first week of September 2001 was shaping up to change the trajectory of Renaerts’ career. He had been offered a partnership in Bistro Pastis – a celebrated French dining room in Kitsilano. After the news broke on 9/11, the deal was dead. “It (the terrorist attacks) really threw a wrench in everybody’s plans,” recalls Renaerts. “September 11 really scared the hell out of my partner, so everything was off the table.” Months later, when Renaerts starting looking at jobs in the Napa Valley, he learned it was next to impossible to get a working visa in the United States. “Not unless you were a doctor,” affirms Renaerts. Still, he has no regrets about keeping his feet locked in the Lower Mainland. “Everything worked out,” says Renaerts. “Everything happens for a reason.” It was also accidental that Renaerts even became chef at all. He was dabbling at cooking as a hobby just out of high school, when a friend of his asked him to come work at Kettle of Fish in Vancouver. This was around 1987. “Initially I thought it [working in a high volume kitchen] was intense,” admits Renaerts. “It was an eye opener for sure.” He pursued those feelings of intrigue and enrolled in the Dubrulle Culinary Institute in Vancouver.
26 WEST VANCOUVER LIVING / SPRING 2011
Renaerts ended up apprenticing at The William Tell, then donned the chef’s hat at Bishop’s and Le Gavroche; all three restaurants were big players in the culinary scene in Vancouver in the ‘90s. There was a food revolution of sorts brewing at that time: the sourcing out of sustainable ingredients. Of course that was followed up by the 100-mile diet. “It was just such a great learning experience, breaking everything down,” he says. “The mushroom pickers would come to the back door. The fish we would get from an actual fisherman. It was around the time when Hazelmere Organic Farm first came on the scene.” Renaerts’ career took off shortly after that. Soon he was cooking for celebrities and royalty in the esteemed kitchens of the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel and the Hotel Vancouver, In 1999, Renaerts became the first chef in Canada to receive a sommelier certification. Having that extensive wine knowledge helps considerably with flavour profiles and menu pairings, he says. “I can think about what wine is in the cellar and what’s seasonal right now and how can we incorporate the two,” explains Renaerts. He did eventually end up making it to the Napa Valley – for the Sonoma Wine Summit. At the last second, Renaerts was asked to sub in for American culinary legend, Charlie Trotter, at a wine seminar. And it is his love of vino that
E
e
led Renaerts to his future wife: he met Nessa at a sommelier course. Together they have collected a lot of different wines, and boast a nice champagne collection, as Renaerts refers to it. While they do have many fermented fruits of the Napa Valley chilling in their cabinet, the couple also appreciates a good value wine. “Evans & Tate 1999 Shiraz drinks like a $30 bottle of wine, Renaerts reveals. It was a year ago that Renaerts took the helm in the kitchens of Beachside Forno, at Ambleside, and Fraiche – overlooking West Vancouver from high on the hill in the British Properties. He also became a partner in the restaurants; this way he can make sure everything is running smoothly, he says. On a typical day, Renaerts will drop in at Beachside Forno in the morning, and then head up to Fraiche in the early afternoon. At the beach, the menu is more fun and playful, while Fraiche brings the sophistication. There is a common thread between both menus though: sustainable, food sources. “I’ve always done it that way; small farms, seasonal food, says Renaerts. Every seafood dish on the menu is sustainable. Seated beside the large, wraparound picture windows,in the Fraiche dining room, that looks
out towards Howe Sound, you might even be able to see exactly where your fish came from: The restaurant sometimes finds fisherman that bring in their bounty from Keats or Bowen Island. At the family home, just above the Capliano Golf and Country Club, the Renaerts’ enjoy pancake breakfasts on the weekend. Nessa and Dino’s two young daughters, Isabella and Sofia have a favourite pancake topping: jelly from cherries that the family canned together, and whipped cream. Back in the British Properties, Renaerts has another fresh idea. “I’ve discovered great hikes just outside of Fraiche, he reveals. “I’ve been mulling it over with the chefs, to see if we can get outside for a break for an hour. Maybe we will look for chanterelles.

The hot trend in menswear this spring and summer is West Van Yacht Club meets Miami Vice: unconstructed sportcoats - in a classic solid colour or a vibrant print for the more adventurous man - paired with dressy denim or crisp linen pants. Of course this dressy causal look, first made famous by ‘80s legendary TV cop, Don Johnson, would not be complete without a simple tee shirt and slip-on loafers - sans socks. hen Lael O’Brien and her husband first pulled up in front of a 1930s character home on Nelson Avenue in Dundarave, they saw a diamond in the rough. One look at the sprawling garden and the sweeping views of the ocean and they were sold. “It was the most centrally located enclave in West Van; so English and quaint,” recalls O’Brien. However, the interior of the home lacked that breezy, openstyle design concept that reflects a laid-back West Coast lifestyle. It was perfect for O’Brien though – she was looking to play. The professional interior designer had a vision. The house was taken down to its stands. Vancouver Sun newspapers from 1927 –used as insulation – were found in the walls. O’Brien added 12 feet on to the west side of the house to
accommodate a grand living room with a big picture window. Another wall was taken down to give a once-tiny dining space some breathing room. Here’s where O’Brien got creative. There needed to be a structural post in between the dining room and living room; using another non-structural post, she ended up creating an open bookshelf. Circular agate bookends – bought from Da Vinci’s Home in Ambleside – were purposely chosen for the shelf as to not interfere with the open concept of the room. First impressions are important, and O’Brien’s downstairs entranceway passes the test. Soft, track lighting gently falls on the minimalistic, handselected décor in the foyer. “Dolly” – a life-sized resin sheep that is also from Da Vinci’s – is a conversation piece. “I wanted guests to feel like they were walking into an art gallery,” reveals O’Brien. There are even areas of the house where painting on the walls is encouraged. O’Brien’s daughters’ bathroom is wallpapered
with Graham and Brown “frames”. These blank canvases are meant to be drawn on. When the girls’ friends come over, everyone heads to this inviting bathroom to hang out. Down the hall, the master bedroom is a sanctuary for O’Brien. Grey-blue lotus Farrow and Ball wallpaper drapes down a lone wall. “It’s ideal to use colours that have natural, undertones so they complement the environmental light,” she says. When designing her own personal space or a client’s, one thing remains consistent: O’Brien’s wide use of West Vancouver sourced materials. “Everyone is on to the 100-mile diet; I try to do the 10-mile design track,” she says. “We all want to keep our local retailers in business.” For more information on Lael O’Brien Design you can visit her website at www.laelobriendesign.com

West Van hockey talent has fashion fever By MARIA SPITALE-LEISK
A dark crossover-type truck rolls up in front of Whole Foods at Park Royal Village. A black, polished Prada loafer hits the pavement by the driver’s side door. A 22-yearold hockey prodigy from West Vancouver steps out. John Negrin smiles, and then graciously extends his hand. The defenseman with the Abbotsford Heat – of the American Hockey League is ready for his close up. During our interview he talks about his favourite West Van haunts, an affinity for European-bred fashion, and how he’s striving to be a hero off the ice.

WV Living: When did you first take to the ice? JN: I took power skating at a young age with a buddy. I didn’t start playing hockey until I was around nine years old. I remember my first tryout to this day. I had two left shin pads and my mom’s sweater for a jersey. A nice touch! WV Living: You started playing minor hockey in West Vancouver before moving on to the North Shore Winter Club. What are your thoughts on the WV minor hockey program and how it prepared you for a higher calibre of hockey? JN: I enjoyed my time with West Van minor hockey. I am still friends with some of the guys that were on my first team. I just remember it being a lot of fun and it gave me that motivation to want to improve. WV Living: How did you manage to balance school at West Van Secondary with a budding hockey career? JN: At the age of 16, I moved away from home to play in the Western Hockey league for the Kootenay Ice. The toughest part about school was the long road trips across Western Canada during the season. We would have study sessions on the road. WV Living: What do you like to do in your spare time on the North Shore? JN: I am here in the summers so I like to get outdoors: golfing, a bike ride or just a day at the beach. WV Living: What is your favourite West Van restaurant? JN: It would have to be Rose Thai. It is a cute little restaurant on Marine Drive run by a beautiful lady named Rose. Great food! WV Living: What do you like to eat before a game? JN: I normally eat spinach salad, gluten free pasta and chicken before my game. WV Living: Interestingly enough, our magazine includes a fitness feature on Bosu exercises. What do you get out of Bosu? JN: Core strength is so important in sports. Working with the Bosu challenges both your core and your balance. I try to integrate it into my workouts as much as possible. WV Living: Also on the topic of workouts, you train in martial arts (Kung Fu, MMA, etc.) How does it help you prepare for the occasional on-ice bout? JN: There are so many different aspects to martial arts – which makes it beneficial. We work on flexibility, balance, speed, and strength. We also work on many different forms of fighting which help on the ice. I would say the most important part of martial arts is the mental training– keeping a quiet and present mind.
WV Living: You have a keen sense of style. Have you always been fashionable? JN: Well thank you! I have three sisters and they have no problem telling me kindly to hang that shirt back up in the closet. I like to dress casually so my favourite thing to wear is a good old pair o’ jeans. WV Living: Donning a dapper suit comes with the territory of being a professional hockey player. Do you have a favourite designer? JN: My favorite designer is Hugo Boss. WV Living: You were drafted by the Calgary Flames, in 2007, in Ohio? Was your family with you? JN: I ended up going to the draft with just my agent. We had no idea where I was going to be drafted since I had spent half of my season out with a high ankle sprain. I wish my family was there to share that experience because they put so much time and effort into it. WV Living: April 3, 2009 was your first NHL game. That is pretty close to playoff territory. You had just been assigned to Calgary on an emergency basis that day. So does that mean that didn’t have any time to mentally prepare for something like that? JN: I had no time to mentally prepare, which was a blessing. If I had time to sit and think about it, I would have been way more nervous. I got the call the night before the game at 12 a.m. and flew out that morning at 5 a.m. Once I got there I literally strapped on the boots and played. It was a memorable day. WV Living: And in the three games that you played with the Flames, you recorded an assist. That is pretty incredible. Do you remember them announcing your name on the loudspeaker? JN: That was the one thing I remember so vividly. I was on the bench sitting beside Todd Bertuzzi. I heard my name on the loudspeaker; he tapped me on the shoulder and said “good job, kid”. I grew up idolizing Todd Bertuzzi. WV Living: Being from Vancouver, how do you support the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks? JN: Touchy question! Let’s just say I like them both. WV Living: If you weren’t a professional hockey player, what other career would you like to have? JN: I would love to be a singer/guitar player. Music is a passion of mine, and something that I just feel really comfortable doing. WV Living: How do use your status in the hockey community to be a hero off the ice? JN:We (Abbotsford Heat) try to get out in the community and do school and hospital visits as much as possible. Playing hockey is such a small part of life in the big picture.
