fter nine hours, it had spread across Facebook and Twitter. More than 1,500 people were supporting the event and West Vancouver resident and Outlook columnist Catherine Barr was receiving calls from media outfits like The Bill Good Show. “People are really angry and they want to do something but they don’t know what,” she says. Rattled by this week’s news of the culling of 100 sled dogs in Whistler, Barr and a group of dog lovers organized a walk in Ambleside to bring awareness to the need for change in the dog sledding industry. Barr is not a dog owner, but the two-day killing of the dogs, using a gun and knife, by a B.C. sled-dog tour operator, is simply too disturbing to ignore, she says. According to a report filed to WorkSafeBC, the province’s workers’ compensation board, a former dog sled owner slaughtered the dogs last April, after post-Olympic tourism numbers did not meet expectations. The dogs were killed under the control of Howling Dog Tours, which looked after the dogs for tour operator Outdoor Adventures Whistler. “People really want to see changes with the law and how this is all
administered,” Barr says. So far, the walk, called Barking Mad, has received support from across the country, including from one frazzled publishing company owner in Ontario. For the past 10 years, Laurie March has been editor of Outdoor Adventure Canada, an online magazine whose name recently has been confused with the dog-sled tour company Outdoor Adventures Whistler. March awoke at 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning to an angry caller from Australia, yelling at her for butchering Huskies. It was only when she saw the news that she understood the confusion. The company has been inundated with more than 100 hate letters from around the world — Italy, Switzerland, Guinea. March has posted a press release on the company’s website to try and rectify the problem. “People are blinded by their anger right now. But I am glad people are ticked off and maybe this will change things,” she says, noting it’s events like Barking Mad that help turn a negative into a positive. Barking Mad takes place on Sunday, Feb. 6, at the dog walk in Ambleside Park. Participants should meet adjacent to the West Van branch of the SPCA. Cops hope to put the brakes on tire thieves Police are issuing a warning to West Vancouver residents after a string of tire thefts from vehicles in the past six months. The most recent theft, said West Vancouver Police spokesman Jag Johal, took place on Jan. 26 in the 2000block of Folkstone Way. In a press release Johal said the thieves stole all four tires and rims from a 2005 Mercedes SL50 parked in an insecure underground parking lot. The vehicle reportedly sustained $700 in damage and was left resting on four wooden blocks. In the past six months West Vancouver Police have been called to investigate two similar thefts in the area — both of which also took place in underground parking lots. Police are now suggesting that vehicle owners use locking lug nuts to secure tires and, hopefully, prevent further thefts. est Vancouver may become the first Lower Mainland community to sprout a monopine. The faux trees, which house communication towers, are used extensively south of the border, but so far haven’t grown roots in Vancouver, said Cascadia Tower president Morrie Finn. His company hopes to change that. The neutral host tower provider has submitted an application to erect a monopine on the median between Highway 1 and the westbound 15th Street exit. The project is currently undergoing public consultation, Finn said. “I think it is only responsible that we make [the tower] a monopine or something that is going to fit in this environment,” the West Van resident said. Just down the highway, Rogers and Telus’s proposed 29.5-metre tower slated for land off Taylor Way, has hit opposition. Geri Boyle, the district’s manager of community planning, said the municipality needs more information about the project and warned the tower will change the scenic quality of West Vancouver. Code, said Steve Simmonds, West Van’s manager of bylaw and licensing services. Both of these perks disappear on May 31. “To meet all those B.C. Code requirements can be fairly costly,” Simmonds warned, adding that right now any alterations to adhere to district’s safety standards do not require a building permit. So far, only 30 per cent of West Vancouver property owners have legalized their secondary suites. Council legalized the units in December of 2009. The new regulations came into effect last spring, but as of January just 225 homeowners had registered their suites with the municipality. Municipal staff estimate there are approximately 800 secondary suites across the district.

Proof of his endeavour fills rows of black binders on shelving in his North Van office, each stuffed with slides from Afghanistan or China or Iraq or any of the 156 countries Langer has visited. “We are living in a homogenized world,” he says, sitting in the dining room. He gingerly takes a sip of coffee and then moves to the kitchen for a cigarette. Langer has been up since 2 a.m. working on one of his multi-media projects that he will be showing at the Ferry Building Gallery. “My [aim] is that after you have seen one of my shows and been to my lecture is that you want to go [to that country],” he says with a slight German accent. Langer was born in Bolivia. He lived there with his German grandparents and in Chile during the rule of military dictator Augusto Pinochet. But it wasn’t his exotic upbringing that spurred his lust for travel, nor the pursuit of spirituality or sun or anything like that, Langer says. Travelling is simply a part of his character. At the age of 16, Langer backpacked to Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica. Years later, he amassed even more passport stamps when he worked in both the tourism and airline industries. He then combined his fervor for exploring with his passion for photography. To date, Langer’s pictures have appeared in hundreds of publications, including National Geographic. “Travelling to so many countries gives you a sense of not belonging anywhere, but also belonging everywhere,” Langer says nonchalantly. Sitting in the middle of Langer’s dining room table is a stack of magazines and papers. The Economist’s glossy cover is on top of the pile. Langer’s interest in politics and history deepened with his worldly experiences, he says. Currently
he’s watching the Egyptians protest in areas he’s photographed extensively. His journeys have shaped his opinions – opinions he’s not afraid to share, Langer says, noting if you are looking for political correctness, his presentation may not be for you. “An important thing about travelling is learning and respecting cultural nuance,” he says. Besides politics, travelling teaches you a thing or two about time management, or the lack of it, Langer jokes. There’s also other tidbits of information one picks up along the way. For example, the United States offers some of the world’s best hospitality and sushi in the Ukraine is pretty tasty. Langer has learnt to trust his gut instincts, but one of the most important things, he says, is keeping an open mind. “You don’t plan the best things in life,” Langer says in closing. “Just ask any pregnant woman.”

Do political endorsements really matter? Keeping track of who supports who in the provincial politics leadership race is like watching hockey scores in January. Whether it’s former NDP leader Joy MacPhail endorsing Adrian Dix, as happened last week, or Liberal leadership hopefuls Christy Clark, George Abbott and Kevin Falcon jostling to get people in their corners, political endorsements mean little to us. Unless they are a political junkie or a voting member of either party, most people are really only interested in how they’ll be personally affected by a new premier and opposition leader. In many ways it seems a fool’s game, this courting of support by candidates and flaunting of endorsements from current and past MLAs, business leaders and other high-profile individuals and organizations. But isn’t that one of the key tenets of politics – the creation of relationships that may help the candidate and/or the party/government down the road? It’s not surprising that the six Liberal candidates, four of whom are in cabinet, have made a splash lately upon adding a name to their lists. Unlike the NDP, whose membership deadline has passed, Liberal leadership candidates have until 5 p.m. Friday (Feb. 4) to sign up new members. Doing so enhances their chances of becoming the next premier – a job with much more cachet than opposition leader. We can expect plenty of fireworks over the next few days. Clark has just one endorsement from a current MLA yet leads the polls among committed party members. She has pulled out the stops, posting a membership deadline clock on her website like some soon-toexpire eBay deal. As with mid-season hockey scores, the declaration of allegiances means little to the average political fan. We’re waiting for playoff time – the Feb. 26 Liberal leadership convention; April 17 for the NDP – when the games actually mean something and the action gets interesting. –Black Press

or most of her life, Maisie Hurley fought tirelessly on behalf of First Nations people. As the founder of the Native Voice newspaper, the Welsh-born activist exposed discriminatory practises in Canada’s schools and penitentiaries, urged the federal government to extend health care to First Nations communities, campaigned for aboriginal students to be admitted to law schools, and lobbied for First Nations people to be given the right to vote in B.C. Hurley was not First Nations. But, over the course of her career, the outspoken crusader helped so many First Nations people across the country that many considered her one of their own. She was family. Throughout her life, Hurley and her husband, Tom, received nearly 200 gifts from First Nations scattered across the Plains, the Arctic, and all of B.C. — artifacts that filled her home until passed away at Lions Gate Hospital in October 1964. Near the end of her life, Hurley lobbied for an aboriginal museum to be built on the North Shore’s Capilano Reserve, but, at the time, the money for such a facility simply wasn’t there. Even still, one of her final wishes was that her vast collection of art and artifacts be on display in a museum, where it could be shared with local residents and accessed by local First Nations community — the very people who created the gifts. Nearly half a century later, that wish has finally come true.
Unchartered territory Last week the North Vancouver Museum and Archives unveiled its massive new exhibition, “Entwined Histories: Gifts from the Maisie Hurley Collection.” The show, which runs until November, highlights a wide selection of Hurley’s artifacts, with particular emphasis on those originating from the Squamish Nation. Sharon Fortney, one of the show’s two curators, says the exhibition marks the first time the Hurley collection has been publicly displayed. But, perhaps more importantly, it’s also the first time the museum has explored First Nations history in the area. “To date, the North Vancouver museum hasn’t really told a diverse story about the people who live in this community,” said Fortney. “This exhibition speaks to a new direction. We’re trying to be more inclusive and more relevant to the people who live in North Vancouver.” Co-curator Damara Jacobs agrees. “It’s a milestone for the North Vancouver museum. They’re heading in a new direction and looking at engaging more with the local history, which is First Nations history,” says Jacobs. “This is a really big deal.”

Using federal grant money, the museum has been able to restore dozens of fascinating objects from the Hurley collection. Along one wall of the museum are portraits drawn by Hurley more than 60 years ago. The sketches — drawn with pastels on paper — depict a rare glimpse of historic First Nations people, from paddle carvers and mat makers, to native leaders such as Chief Jimmy Jimmy, Mary Agnes Capilano, and Chief August Jack Khatsahlano. There’s also a long list of Coast Salish artifacts, including carvings and model totems, baskets and trays made from coiled cedar roots, a red cedar bark mat, and a chinook-style canoe. But the crown jewel, says Fortney, is the swéwkw’elh — a chief’s blanket made of mountain goat and dog hair. After careful analysis, researchers at the University of Victoria’s advanced imaging lab have determined that some of the fur in the blanket comes from a breed of dog that went extinct in the mid-1800s, before the band had contact with non-First Nations. Such a blanket would only have been worn by someone of high status, Fortney notes. “The fact that they gave her these kinds of objects really speaks to the kind of esteem they held her in,” says Fortney. “They viewed her as family.” Whenever possible, Fortney and Jacobs have tried to identify not only the significance of the gifts on display, but the identity of the gift-giver — something Fortney says is unique to the Entwined Histories exhibition. “First Nations art is usually very anonymous,” says Fortney. “This is unusual that we’re able to name who made a lot of it.” Jacobs, who is also of Coast Salish background, says identifying the gift-giver has allowed the museum to make tangible connections to the present. Many of the Squamish Nation gift-givers, she notes, are directly related to community leaders living on the North Shore today. “Typically when people think of museums they think it’s dead, it’s gone, it’s in the past. Particularly when it comes to native culture,” says Jacobs. “A lot of people aren’t really aware that they’re surrounded by people who are indigenous to this very place. This show is part of something that’s still very much here. It’s alive.”

A new beginning Entwined Histories is perhaps one of the largest, most important, exhibitions in the history of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives. And, it’s likely long overdue, says executive director Nancy Kirkpatrick. “It’s quite remarkable. Here we are in 2011 and this is the first time this is happening,” says Kirkpatrick. “This exhibit marks a turning point for our museum. It focuses on community engagement and collaboration, and it demonstrates our conviction that community museums, such as ours, can and should be socially relevant.” Locally, the exhibition will run for 10 months, with plans in the works for school visits and a spring-break program aimed at young kids. Following its November wrap-up, the exhibition will continue north to Whistler. By promoting dialogue and understanding, says Kirkpatrick, the museum hopes to reveal connections between the past and the present. The end result, she hopes, will be a “sense of cohesion” and “a place where individuals are inspired and our community is strengthened.” “A lot of people think of museums as must and dusty. As a place to sweep off the cobwebs and look at the past. Well, we’re not that kind of museum,” Kirkpatrick says. “We want to bring stories to light and ask, ‘How does this affect us now?’” ‘Entwined Histories: Gifts from the Maisie Hurley Collection’ is presented by the North Vancouver Museum and Archives and the Squamish Nation, with support from the Museums Assistance Program, Department of Canadian Heritage. The exhibition, which also includes a documentary film, is open to the public until Nov. 6 at 209 West 4th Street, North Vancouver. If someone wants your money up front before you have hired them, you don’t want them. Fourth, go prepared to that first meeting. Have a list of questions. What should you ask at your first meeting? The number one question, of course, is rate. Most accountants will either have a minimum fee or hourly rate or some combination of that. Some bill straight by the hour, some value bill (which means they will estimate the value of a particular service and have a minimum fee for that service). And just because an hourly rate is high does not mean your bill will be high. Generally speaking, a $50/hour tax preparer should be twice as fast as one who charges $25/hour. Ask if they have other similar clients to find out if your potential accountant familiar with your specific needs. If you are looking to invest in a rental property, for example, have they worked with the capital gains issues associated with the eventual disposition? Ask how long this person takes to return calls or emails. If you haven’t gotten their name from a personal reference, find out if they have a reference that you can call. And ask the question: “Why should I choose you?” You may be surprised by the answer.

he trick is making it look easy. Seamless, in fact. It’s a performance not unlike the theatre or the ballet. Theatrics are crucial, facial expressions must be spot on. But this show doesn’t have a traditional stage or curtain call. This one’s carried out in the water. “I’m swimming about 26 hours a week. But with the training camps with the B.C. team, it’s about 32 hours a week,” says Danielle ten Vaanholt. “But that’s what it’s all about. You push yourself and see how far you can go.” It’s been almost a decade since ten Vaanholt signed up for synchronized swimming lessons. The Rockridge secondary school student had tried her hand at dance and soccer previously, but neither stuck. But after striking a hard fought deal with her mom — ten Vaanholt got a brand new toy watch in exchange for agreeing to try synchronized swimming — she started down a sporting path that has led her to the 2011 Canada Winter Games. From Feb. 19 to 27, ten Vaanholt will be representing her country in Halifax, competing in the competition’s duet routine draw. And while the average 17-year-old high school athlete likely never dons the Maple Leaf in their sporting careers, ten Vaanholt’s no stranger to high profile contests. She’s competed in Canadian national tournaments and traveled coast-to-coast opposing swimmers of all ages. “Danielle [tenVaanholt] is the most intense

She has had concussions and injured shoulders and we had to force her to take recovery time,” says Danielle Hahn, club coach with the Vancouver Pacific Wave synchronized swimming club and ten Vaanholt’s instructor of four years. “We drive these athletes to exhaustion to make routines feel easy. We make these swimmers swim lengths of the pool with their legs above the water and Danielle never complains. She’s a leader.” Ten Vaanholt’s goal was always to make the Canadian Olympic team. Competing on sports’ highest stage, she says, is the ultimate challenge. She volunteered at Cypress Mountain during the 2010 Winter Games as a “crowd pumper” and “watched dreams come true” for two weeks. She’s witnessed premier athletics from the front row but, as she closes in on graduation, ten Vaanholt says her goals have been shifting lately. She wants to attend McGill University and pursue her other passions, math and science. She’s pondering medical school after her undergrad, but says she has inherited a fierce entrepreneurial spirit from her grandpa — a founding partner of Aqua Guard, one of the companies involved in cleaning up last year’s spill in the Gulf of Mexico — and wouldn’t mind starting a company or two. “Maybe a doctor, maybe chemical engineering. But what my grandpa’s done has been very inspiring to me. I don’t know yet,” she says. “But either way, it’ll be go big or go home.”
Best thing about gymnastics? “The competition. I don’t like to lose.”
Do you play other sports? “Field hockey. I’m going to Orlando with the under-16 West Van Field Hockey Club from February 8-14. I went to the same tournament two years ago. It was really fun. The outcome was important but you also want to make sure you have a good time.” Who is your role model? “My Grandpa. He’s strong. He doesn’t rely on other people. He builds houses and gets the job done.” Favourite saying? “Everything happens for a reason. My Dad says it.” Favourite meal? “Perogies...and ribs....well not together of course. My Mom makes them.” How may text messages do you get a day? “[Laughing] I don’t know... I had about 50 today. That would be about average.”

Tom and the Tea Cup game From Day 1 to his last at the mike, Larscheid has been one of a kind.
B
roadcasting has been Tom Larscheid’s cup of tea for almost 50 years. That’s rather appropriate because I can recall in some detail the very first time I heard the voice of the loquacious, longtime Vancouver Canucks’ and B.C. Lions’ colour commentator. It was long before he became an icon of the airwaves. And it actually did involve a teacup, as will be explained momentarily. This Thursday evening Larscheid will be bestowed with the prestigious Jack Diamond Sports Personality of the Year Award at the Jewish Community Centre Sports Dinner at the Hyatt Regency. And in September he will be inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in the media category during its annual banquet. Larscheid arrived in 1962 to play for the B.C. Lions, via Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was born on April 6, 1940; then California, where he grew up from age 11; and finally Utah State University, where he was an All-American running back. But Larscheid found himself with a knee injury during the 1963 season, unable to play in that season’s Grey Cup and uncertain of his future in the game. He did not play in 1964 and his attempt at a comeback ended permanently on July 15, 1965, during an exhibition game at Empire Stadium when his knee gave way as he was tackled by Calgary’s all-star defensive tackle Don Luzzi. est Vancouver police are urging residents to exercise more caution with their cellphones after the detachment was inundated with accidental 911 calls in early January. From Jan. 1 to Jan. 15, the WVPD received 182 “abandoned” calls — more than one every two hours — almost all of which are being blamed on misdialed
cellphones in pockets and purses. Cpl. Jag Johal says the increasing number of “pocket dials” is of great concern to police because it ties up emergency dispatchers and, in some cases, sends emergency responders on a wild goose chase. When a 911 call is made from a mobile phone, all efforts are made to identify the nature of the emergency and the identity of the caller. If a call is abandoned, dispatchers use technology to triangulate the area it was placed from. If the caller can’t be reached, police, fire or ambulance crews may be dispatched to the area. “It’s a serious issue,” says Johal.
“These calls take away a lot of time that could be spent on actual emergencies.” To cut back on the number of false calls, Johal asks that people use protective cellphone cases that prevent accidental dialing. Don’t program 911 into any telephone, Johal adds. Speed dials often lead to accidental calls. If you do mistakenly dial 911, don’t hang up. Stay on the line and explain the situation to the dispatcher. here’s just something about a campfire. The crackles, pops and hisses of a burning log. The soothing glow. The warmth that emanates from flickering flames. Nothing bonds a group of people together quite like it. Beginning this week, North Vancouver’s CityScape gallery will explore that theme — the “utility and magic of a campfire” — in its latest exhibition. The show, a collaborative effort of six Vancouver artists, will recall the narrative nature of a traditional campfire, while also adding a contemporary twist, says exhibition coordinator Jo Dunlop. “It will be interesting to see the diverse works and the artists’ diverse takes on the campfire,” says Dunlop. “The subject matter is something you don’t see often in a gallery.” The artists —Andrei Bus, Norman Coloma, Martin Krykorka, Marcus Jolly, Roland Meier and Joelle Sept — have created an eclectic body of work for the show, including carvings, found objects, sculptures, video, photography and paintings. Sept, a painter and illustrator who works on the North Shore, says her contribution to the show — watercolour renderings of objects that might be found in the ashes of a campfire — is meant to prompt thought and questions about the nature of a fire. “My contribution to the show looks at the destructive nature of a fire and the way in which things are transformed by fire,” Sept says. “And also about how stories can be implied when someone chooses to burn something in a campfire... stories were a big thing for all of us.” The other featured artists, she says, experimented with everything from photographing driftwood to painting on a charcoal ground.

As part of the exhibition, the North Vancouver Community Arts Council is planning a large community campfire at Shipbuilders Square to “celebrate the spirits of camaraderie” on Feb. 19. Dunlop says the event will feature music, performances, storytelling, free food and beverages, and will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Scouts Canada on the North Shore. “Campfires: An Exhibition” runs from Feb. 4 to Feb. 26 at the CityScape Community Art Space, located at 335 Lonsdale Ave. in North Vancouver. There will be a grand opening tonight (Feb. 3) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and an artist talk on Saturday (Feb. 5) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the gallery.
