Wednesday, May 25 from 5:30pm - 8:30pm at Pinnacle at the Pier Hotel

Residential addresses may sprinkle lawns: Even-numbered addresses: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, 4am - 9am Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, 4am - 9am

The proposed Low Level Road Improvement Project aims to address community safety while enhancing rail and port operations.

Non-residential addresses may sprinkle lawns: Even-numbered addresses: Monday and Wednesday, 1am - 6am Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesday and Thursday, 1am - 6am All non-residential addresses: Friday, 4am - 9 am

Port Metro Vancouver lead a community consultation process earlier this year. As a result of the community feedback received, a number of refinements to help maximize community benefits and minimize effects on nearby properties are being considered.

Properties with mixed zoning will be considered non-residential. Hand watering and sprinkling of vegetable gardens, shrubs and flowers is still unrestricted. Details at www.cnv.org/SprinklingRegulations.

The Town Hall Meeting will be hosted by the City of North Vancouver and Port Metro Vancouver. Please join us to review updated project information, ask questions and provide feedback on the project. For more information, visit www.cnv.org/ LowLevelRoadUpgrade.

celebration of life for Jim Martin, who died tragically in a house fire May 9, takes place Thursday, May 26. Martin’s death, coming only days before his 62nd birthday on May 24, has rocked the North Shore’s sports and education communities for he had a lifelong connection to both. He played soccer and rugby at North Van High, from which he graduated in 1967, and rugby with the old North Shore All-Blacks while growing up. After graduating from UBC in 1973, he began a 35-year North Vancouver teaching, coaching and administrative career with one year of substituting before landing a full-time position. The first of the 85 teams he coached – mostly rugby, but also almost every level of boys’ and girls’ basketball, and at times football, skiing, softball, track and field and volleyball – was a

Some undoubtedly questioned his ability to do the co-ordinator job (perhaps given his earlier somewhat legendary wilder days) but I was mightily impressed with the detail with The popular which he carried it out teacher, coach and to say nothing of his co-ordinator of high school sports died in very messy desk which rivalled even mine. a house fire on When Martin had May 9. Elaine Wick health issues, Glen photo Walters became acting co-ordinator of athletics for a year and a half. Yet, despite a leave of absence, Jim continued to show up regularly, often daily, to spend a couple of hours or more at the office. You might say he was a larger-than-life figure. He once gained front-page publicity while acting as a starter in the pouring rain at the annual NSSSAA track and field meet by wearing an umbrella attached to his head. Martin was involved in organizing numerous overseas rugby and basketball trips with his teams. He was a longtime member of the North Shore Sport Awards selection committee. When he retired in 2008, he was awarded honorary life membership by the NSSSAA. But he continued coaching rugby at Argyle where his three sons played. He was always good for one of my Instant Replay stories, the latest being one published last year about the time he rescued Alfie, the North Van High mascot, from West Vancouver kidnappers more than 40 years ago. The fire that claimed his life and consumed the upstairs level of the house he rented on Larson Crescent was fully ablaze when firefighters reached the burning building shortly after 11 p.m. and no one could enter safely. His body was not officially identified until days later. The house sits mere yards across Larson Road from Carson Graham, where he taught 17 years, and from the portable that first housed his NSSSAA office before it was relocated to the Lucas Centre. The celebration of life is at 4 p.m. at the Capilano Rugby Club in Klahanie Park, located along Curling Road and Glenaire Drive just west off Capilano Road near Marine Drive.

It went day and night for a staggering 52 hours and 10 minutes, eclipsing the old mark by more than an hour. Laneway housing project splits West Van residents

Crowd lines up to comment on Hollyburn Mews proposal

If land re-zoning is allowed for the Hollyburn Mews proposal – which includes a duplex and a coach house on each of three lots – then the value of the land will increase. But by how much? Submitted image REBECCA ALDOUS S TA F F R E P O RT E R

he district and the developer behind West Vancouver’s possible first carriage housing development are once again reaching for their calculators. Michael Geller, a Vancouver-based architect and planner who oversaw developments such as the South Shore of False Creek, has drafted a nine-unit development on three lots in the 2000-block of Esquimalt Avenue. The proposal includes a duplex, ranging in size from 1,430 to 1,650 sq.ft., and a 1,150 sq.ft. carriage house on each lot. Before Geller can break ground, the development needs an Official Community Plan (OCP) amendment and a re-zoning of the three parcels. District staff recommended the OCP amendment apply to the entire block to allow for similar infill projects on the remaining lots. Three hours’ worth of speakers chimed in with their thoughts on the project, Hollyburn Mews, at Monday night’s public hearing. Ultimately what stole the show were questions regarding the project’s estimated dollar increase as a result the re-zoning. The re-zoning would allow for more units on the lots than the original designation, essentially increasing the value of the properties. This process is called uplift; three quarters of the new value is paid to the municipality as a community amenity contribution. Council uses that money for improvements throughout West Van.

The uplift for Hollyburn Mews was estimated to be $155,000 by real estate appraisers Burgess, Cawley, Sullivan and Associates. That’s down from a $595,000 estimate the company came to earlier in the year. The two vastly different figures raised eyebrows among the crowd. Using the most recent estimate, if council waved its re-zoning wand, tripling the permitted number of units and increasing the permitted density by 75 per cent, the value of each lot would only increase by $52,000, West Vancouver resident George Pajari said. This simply doesn’t add up, he said. If the developer were to build the same number of units within the existing zoning, he would have to spend millions to buy sufficient land, he said. “If you had to go out and buy six lots in West Van how far do you think $155,000 would get you?” Pajari asked council. Councillors Michael Smith and Bill Soprovich suggested the development’s public hearing be adjourned to the next council meeting, on June 6, to allow councillors the opportunity to review the variance. Since the hearing, the district and Geller have discussed using a formula which will more clearly define the uplift. One of the difficulties the district faces is there are no comparable developments when calculat-

ing its worth, said Bob Sokol, the district’s director of planning, lands and permits. In addition, the value difference is not based on the dollar increase of the property once the property is developed, he noted. “You can’t just look at the sale price of the project,” Sokol said. The new formula will likely have a payment to the municipality that is tied with the financial success of the project, Geller said. People often assume nine smaller houses are worth more than three larger houses, but it is not always the case, he said, noting the profitability of the project doesn’t hinge on the uplift. Many people are concerned about affordable housing within the region, yet the more the project will have to pay to the district, the higher the units’ prices will be, Geller said, adding Pajari’s figures are calculated using BC Assessment numbers which would distort the value of the land. Community amenity contributions are common; however they are usually paid to offset the cost of additional amenities for the increase in population, Geller noted. “In this case the number of people living in nine smaller houses may be no different than the ones living in three larger homes,” he said. raldous@northshoreoutlook.com

Richard Sheehy, in his West Vancouver studio, has been a Bob Dylan fan since the 1960s. Sean Kolenko photo

Happy birthday, Bob Once the definition of youth culture, iconic singer Bob Dylan turns 70 this Sunday. To mark the event, The Outlook sits down with Dylan fan Richard Sheehy to talk memories, concerts, lyrics and all other things Bob himself bedridden, recuperating in hospital from a near-fatal motorcycle crash. Burnt out from the non-stop pressure of being the “voice of a generation,” Dylan crashed his Triumph bike near his home in upstate New York. Dylan wouldn’t release another critically acclaimed solo album for nearly nine years. He wouldn’t tour for eight. “I wanted to see Bob and The Band in 1974 on the comeback tour but the Canucks game was on that night and that was the only available day on the tour,” says Sheehy, shaking his head. “I missed the Rolling Thunder [Revue] in 1975, but in 1978 I saw him at the Pacific Coliseum and it was blistering rock and roll. I knew a guy who recorded that show and it was just burning stuff.” Due to geographical happenstance, Sheehy didn’t have the chance to see another Dylan concert for another eight years. But then the Never Ending Tour began — Dylan has been on a tour, dubbed the Never Ending Tour, since about 1988 — and Sheehy promised he’d never miss him again if they’re in the same town. From shows in Atlanta, to performances in Buffalo and Vancouver’s storied Orpheum Theatre, Sheehy’s made up for the lost time. He, like many fans out there, has watched Dylan grow old on stage. Now donning tailored cowboy suits and nine gallon hats, today’s Dylan is a far from cry from the cherubic folkie who, hailing from a small town in northern Minnesota, wound up in Greenwich Village. Nor is he the chain-smoking hipster of the mid ‘60s, the Christian convert of the ‘80s or the washed up troubadour of the early ‘90s. Today’s Dylan is a mixture of all of the above, part poet, part rocker and part visionary, still doing the thing he does best — singing songs. “There are always people coming to him. He goes so deep. There is that much meaning and potential to relate to his lyrics,” says Sheehy. “It’s a difficult thing. The casual music listener may not have the patience to invest in him. But for someone who is curious, someone looking for something, he hooks you.” skolenko@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/seankolenko

est Vancouver’s Richard Sheehy can’t remember the first time he heard Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone.” To grow up in Los Angeles in the 1960s, you see, was to grow up surrounded by music. Bands such as the Beach Boys, the Byrds and Love all came up in the local scene and all were at the height of their powers. And Sheehy’s siblings, particularly his older sister Louise, were heavily into both the folk and rock and roll scenes then sweeping COFFEE the continent. New albums WITH were events in those days and Sheehy, as so many others, Sean Kolenko waited breathlessly for every skolenko@northshore outlook.com monumental release from a favourite artist. But, he says, one particular moment stands alone amongst the veritable parade of Dylan-fueled listening sessions he’s been a part of. “In 1965 me and my sister [Louise] went to see the Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl,” says Sheehy, with a smile only someone who saw John, Paul, George and Ringo perform could have. “Roger McGuinn [of the Byrds] was there and Joan Baez was sitting in the next box over. On the road home “Like a Rolling Stone” came on the radio. That’s the one that sticks out.” Bruce Springsteen, once heralded a “new Dylan” upon his arrival on the music scene in the early ‘70s, called the song “the thing that kicked open the door to whole ‘60s.” He was 15 when he first heard it — on a local New Jersey radio station riding in the car with his mom — and says it singlehandedly re-invented how pop music could sound. Radio stations didn’t know what to do with the song. Clocking in at more than six minutes, “Like a Rolling Stone” was twice as long as the average tune of the day. The Beatles and psychedelic pioneers such as the Grateful Dead hadn’t yet headed down their experimental roads, so it was left to Dylan to destroy the pop archetype. To compensate for its length, Columbia Records tried to split the song and spread it over both sides of a vinyl. But the plan didn’t work. Fans demanded it be played in its entirety and “Like a Rolling Stone” quickly became the template for rock and roll possibility. Less than a year later, however, Dylan found

year after opening its doors, Gleneagles Golf Course’s Larson Station is seeing more customers at its tables. And it’s a trend the restaurant’s operator Enzo Taffara is hoping to encourage throughout fall and winter. Taffara is in the process of applying for a patron’s participation endorsement to tap into the restaurant’s existing liquor licence. The endorsement allows the restaurant to invite bands to play at the venue. It won’t change the business’s 10 p.m. closing hour or give the restaurant the ability to run a pub. What Taffara envisions is the occasional dinner and dance night or jazz evening. Such events would be held at night and during the wet seasons, when golf clubs are stored in garages. This will eliminate concerns regarding parking congestion, he said. “I am more hoping the jazz will boost the business in the quiet months,” Taffara added. Larson Station’s liquor endorsement request sent a flurry of letters to city hall, the majority of which expressed concern regarding possible noise and parking issues. Residents’ worries hinged on the fact

Enzo Taffara says a liquor licence change will allow him to host music nights at the golf course restaurant but neighbours worry about noise. Rob Newell photo they had little information about what the operator was asking for, said Susan Belsheim, who lives across the street from the golf course. Pamphlets were sent out to the community but information on the leaflets was broad, she said. Homeowners lining the greens worry about constant late night music, Belsheim said. Although the building’s renovations have mitigated a lot of the restaurant’s chatter, it hasn’t completely disappeared, she said. “Already in the neighbourhood we have had noise problems from events,” Belsheim said. Larson Station and its renovated banquet hall were unveiled May 1, 2010. The $2.3-million upgrades included measures to reduce noise pollution. There are no windows or doors that open toward residential areas, Taffara said,

and the district’s operator agreement bans music from being played outside. The restaurant survived its initial year and the future looks promising, Taffara said. “We had our challenges in the first year, like any business, but now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.” Starting in June, the facility will host 22 weddings. Its brunch, which is served until 3 p.m., has become so popular that people travel from as far as Coquitlam to eat on the restaurant’s patio. The facility holds a lot of history and memories for many members of the community, added Taffara, a Eagle Harbour resident. The last thing Taffara said he wants to do is forego its community feel. Larson Station’s request for the liquor license endorsement will come before council on Monday, June 7.

survey on the future look of West Vancouver’s parks has kept residents’ phones ringing. This month, the district hired Synovate, a marketing research company, to ask people what they like about the municipality’s parks and what could be improved on moving forward. The answers will be used to help forge the Parks Master Plan, a policy document that sets a clear direction for the management, protection, enhancement and community engagement of West Van’s parks, trails and natural areas. The working group tasked with the creation of this document went on a number of field trips, met with local stewardship organizations and, most recently, held two public workshops, said Andrew Banks, senior manager of parks. “The parks master working group is very pleased to have so much feedback to integrate into the planning process,” he said. The phone survey started on May 10. So far, 500 people received parks related calls. Synovate conducted similar surveys about the West Van park system in 2002 and 2006. In the next round of information gathering, the parks master plan working group anticipates to sitting down with council, youth, advisory groups on disability issues and the Squamish Nation. North Vancouver’s 6 Engineer Squadron celebrated its centennial birthday May 7. From important roles in both world wars, to UN tours of Yugoslavia and tactical work throughout B.C., the unit has been a model of service to North Vancouver and Canada.

It has been the dogged valour of our soldiers who have endured at times the most unmerciful shelling rather than yield their trenches to the German infantry waiting to advance at the first sign of weakness. This and their dash if an opportunity presents itself to attack with the bayonet has saved the day. “They will face anything — the trouble is to keep them back...” – John Cosgrove, an original member of 6 Engineer Sqaudron, writing to City of North Vancouver council in 1915 from the Western Front

O

n Feb. 1, 1911, military headquarters in Victoria, B.C. approved the formation of 6 Engineer Squadron — called the 6th Field Company Canadian Engineers in those days — and appointed prominent businessman James Pemberton Fell as its first commanding officer. Engineering squadrons had been popping up across the country since the turn of the century. Brighton, Charlottetown, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa all

had units as early as 1903 and it took some petitioning on the part of North Vancouver citizens to get a squadron on the North Shore. Both a former artillery and engineer officer, Fell didn’t, at first, welcome the position. He was a busy man and felt his professional schedule demanded too much of his time. After some prodding, he eventually accepted. “You know, I was always so bound in

my studies I don’t remember my father saying too much about it,” says Michael Fell, son of the first commander, on the phone from his home in suburban Philadelphia. “But being much older now, I’m really very proud of my father. Although he came from England, he was a very patriotic Canadian. He was a leader of men. He commanded great respect from the men whom he led in the First World War and

in his business life.” The early days The 6 Engineer Squadron quickly became a busy bunch. Large-scale coal strikes in Nanaimo, bridging exercises and the construction of the J.P. Fell Armoury filled their schedule. But on Aug. 6, two days after Canada entered the First World War, things were taken up a notch. The 6 Engineer

Squadron was activated and the members quickly began training thousands of soldiers for deployment overseas and coordinated work parties that travelled throughout the province building roads, camps and hospitals. Nearly every member of the original company — 30 initial men were sworn in on May 7, 1912 — went overseas. Most arrived in Valcartier, Quebec in August 1914 for training. The men were placed in virtually every engineer unit in the Canadian forces, serving in field companies, bridging units, water supply teams and tunnelling and railway companies. Others were at Ypres, Mount Sorrel, Vimy Ridge and Passchendale, to name but a few of the battles they fought in, where nearly 200 members lost their lives. The squadron performed many of those same functions in the Second World War. Members offered general engineering support in B.C., camp building in the Maritimes and England, assault training and fought on the beaches of Normandy. The first recorded Canadian casualty on Juno Beach, an area on the Normandy coast, was a 6 Engineer guy. “It may only be a television show, ‘Band of Brothers’, but I believe that’s really what we feel. It’s the highest thing, perhaps, the military has is the protection of its own,” says Col. Jim Happer, of the 39 Combat Engineers, the larger regiment of which the 6 Engineer Squadron is a part. “It’s perhaps something no one and no other job has.” These days The current incarnation of the 6 Engineer Squadron is, as it has

always been, tasked with serving the community. In emergency situations, members may be called upon to clear roads, build bridges, fight fires and provide drinking water if necessary. The squadron holds on to its storied history tightly, its museum and mess hall bear no shortage of memorabilia, photos and letters. Now century-old uniforms, medals of honour and de-activated mines fill display cases and line walls, all a constant reminder of where the members have been and what they’ve put on the line for their beliefs. But it isn’t just the tales and snapshots of combat and bravery that continue to attract new members. Young men and women enlist in search of a team, a family of likeminded people interested in a simple, age-old desire: helping. “I was looking for a way to give back to my country. The engineers appealed to me because they’re everywhere and are necessary in so many situations,” says Mat Curry, North Van resident and squadron member for the past two and a half months. “But so many things appeal to me. Standing at attention or meeting in the mess and getting to know each other, the camaraderie is amazing. The first time I walked in here [the Fell Armoury] I was shaking like a leaf. I knew my life was changing for the better right then and there.”

women. Across Capilano River the numbers aren’t much better. The District of North Vancouver has two female members in its pool of 20 firefighters, while the city has a single female firefighter in a team of 56. It’s an imbalance the North Shore fire departments are trying to fix, says Martin Ernst, West Vancouver fire assistant chief. This summer, the organizations will send three North Shore girls in grades 10 to 12 to a camp where they can learn more about becoming a firefighter. Camp Ignite is run by female firefighters from across the Lower Mainland. It introduces participants to not only firefighting, but healthy living and fitness, including team-building exercises. Carla Penman was the first female firefighter on the North Shore. With the District of North

t’s not easy to ask people for money, no matter how good the cause the money is for. That’s why Bobbi Slinger has signed up on the North Shore Relay for Life website. She can send out an email to all of her friends asking if they want to make a donation for her team in the June 11 event at Mahon Park. The donations can be easily – and securely – made online. “It’s difficult to ask people for money face to face,” says the retired teacher. “This way you put no one on the spot. They can ignore your email or support you.” However, some of her team members like raising pledges the old-fashioned way by asking for a cash donation. No matter how the 15 team members set about raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society event, they are united in their goal of raising $10,000. So far they’re about halfway there. Slinger’s personal goal is $2,000. (Last week she was fifthin the top fundraisers.) Slinger took part in her first Relay for Life eight or nine years ago. Her niece was the coordinator of the event, which sees team members take turns walking around the track at Mahon Park from 10 in the morning until 10 at night.

“It was a family thing,” she says, “and after that I kept on doing it. The camaraderie is a big thing. You meet lots of people in the same situation. It’s just a chance to get together. It’s usually a great day with positive things going on.” Five years ago, Slinger wasn’t just walking for all the people she knew whose lives had been touched by cancer; she was also walking for herself. She had breast cancer. In fact, seven of the team’s 15 members have or have had cancer. The call themselves Team Crush because “we want to crush cancer, eliminate it.” On their team’s site on www.relaybc.ca, it says, “by participating in Relay for Life we are helping to save lives. We are ensuring that people don’t have to face cancer alone and will receive the support they need. We participate in Relay For Life for ourselves, our loved ones and our communities.” If you want to help Team Crush reach its goal, go to www.relaybc.ca. Under “find a 2011 event,” scroll down to North Shore. Hit “donate now”; then under “support a participant” you can make a pledge for Bobbi Slinger; if you hit “support a team”, you can make a pledge to CRUSH. Vancouver fire department, she’s been battling flames 14 years. As one of the camp’s coordinators, she says the camp is about inspiring young women to chase their dreams. “The camp is just about fun, fitness and confidence,” she says. “It’s to show them they can become anything they want to be.” Each fire department will sponsor one candidate. That individual will spend three days at the Vancouver Fire Rescue Training Centre. Applicants must submit their applications to their school’s counsellor. There’s a misconception that firefighters need to be big and burly, but that’s not the case, Ernst says. “You use your wits before your strength,” he says. The majority of B.C. fire departments had a surge of hiring in the ’70s and ’80s. Now departments face a slew of retirements, Ernst says, noting the West Van department recently hired three new firefighters. Camp Ignite will run from Aug. 5 to 7. The deadline to apply is June 2.

NORTH AND WEST VANCOUVER Extraordinary Real Estate ... North Shore to Furry Creek

About Me Originally from Montreal - yes I can speak French and often root for Les Canadiens - we came west with our young daughter in tow in 1996, trading the “big smoke” of Toronto for the West Coast lifestyle. My daughter Morgan attended West Bay Elementary and went on to Rockridge Secondary where she was active in both West Van soccer and field hockey programs. Morgan graduates this spring from Queen’s University. Love of Construction We designed and custom-built a fabulous post and beam home at Furry Creek in the pioneering days of this beautiful golf course community located midway between downtown and Whistler overlooking fabulous Howe Sound. The eight-plus years we spent there was truly “like living in a postcard”. The friendships we made will last a lifetime. Subsequently, we moved down the road to West Vancouver with Billy, our adopted Great Pyrenees, and Mo the cat. I coordinated an extensive renovation of a very tired home with “good bones”, putting my construction and planning skills to the test while transforming a “project house” into a modern family home in the spring of 2005.

Your experience begins at Expedia CruiseShipCenters.

Traveller’s Tip:

What does All-Inclusive cruising mean? Most people are used to paying for their cruise and airfare when they book their vacation. Once on board you might choose to purchase shore excursions in each port, enjoy your day with drinks or try a new bottle of wine at dinner. Often you need to fly a day early and pay for a hotel night before the cruise. With all-inclusive cruising most of your costs are included so you know what your final amount is from the very beginning. Regent Seven Seas Cruises, for example, include your airfare, shore excursions, transfers, specialty dining, pre-hotel night, on board beverages including alcohol, specialty coffees, bottled waters and staff gratuities. At the end of your cruise the difference in price is very little and often less considering most all-inclusive cruise lines offer 6* accommodations and service. Call our expert cruise consultants today and they will recommend the perfect cruise for you.

The 1937 Austin that started it all West Van’s Jim Pattison puts his auto empire in drive with sale of his first car

B

efore he opened his first car dealership in Vancouver close to 50 years ago, Jim Pattison was already turning a profit buying and selling cars. “When I was at John Oliver high school, there were 1,800 kids and only two cars were driven by kids, the West Vancouver resident recalled during an interview with Black Press. “I was one of them, driving a ‘37 Austin two-seater convertible. My dad helped me get it. It was financed through the Consolidated Finance Company, and my dad cosigned for it. I sold it after I graduated from school, and made a slight profit on it. “That’s how I paid my way through university, Pattison said, “buying and selling cars. Pattison’s first dealership opened in 1961 at the corner of 18th Avenue and Cambie Street in Vancouver – a General Motors franchise that not only was the start of the Jim Pattison Auto Group, but the beginning of the huge Jim Pattison Group of Companies that today employs more than 33,000 people and generates $7.2 billion in sales annually. “Everything we have started with

that business at 18th and Cambie, Pattison said. “We bought a threepump Home Oil gas station, with a small showroom, with a $40,000 loan from the Royal Bank. We sold 25 cars in the first month. The first store was purchased on May 8, 1961. Roughly a decade later, its success led General Motors to bend – offering the Pattison group a second franchise. “GM policy at the time was not to give a dealer more than one franchise, Pattison explained. “But there was a problem with a dealer in Coquitlam, and they asked us to help out. We acquired a Chevrolet franchise and opened on Kingsway in Burnaby. “Then 1979, maybe 1980, Toyota came to us and offered us three dealerships in the North Shore, New Westminster and Surrey. We took all three, but they were losing money so we gave up the one in New Westminster. Today, the Jim Pattison Auto Group has grown to include 18 locations in Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island, selling and servicing eight brands of automobiles. New Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Volvo, Scion, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles are sold under

Jim Pattison, who is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his first car dealership, started buying and selling cars as a way of paying for his university education. Evan Seal photo/Black Press the Pattison name, as are used cars through the company’s Cars Unlimited brand. “It gives you more opportunities, Pattison said, explaining why the auto giant sells numerous different brands. Each manufacturer has certain advantages to suit different customers. Already the dominant player in British Columbia’s automotive industry, Pattison sees no reason why the company can’t continue to grow, even as he acknowledges people may use their cars less in the

future, but will still want their own vehicles for when they do. “There will be more people – and more cars. These days, people want their own personal transportation, he reasoned. “As cities get crowded, there will be more people using transit, and they will be using their cars less. But people will still want their own transportation, to go their different ways. “When I grew up, a lot of families didn’t have a car. Now, most have two cars, and if the kids drive, you could have three or four.

ICBC retreats from rate hike for risky drivers

in their shoes

JEFF NAGEL BLACK PRESS

I

CBC has withdrawn its plan to make drivers with speeding tickets or other recent traffic violations pay more in order to give those with a clean record deeper discounts. Public Safety Minister Shirley Bond said she ordered the public auto insurer to “go back to the drawing board and rethink the options” for major reforms to the rate structure. Bond said any hike in premiums from a single speeding ticket — which ICBC originally intended — is “not reasonable” but left the door open for changes based on driving records, rather than just at-fault claims. ICBC president and CEO Jon Schubert said the corporation didn’t adequately communicate the planned changes. “We apologize for the concern this caused,” Schubert said. “We’re going to take a step back and rethink the options for a reasonable way to share risk, and we’ll do a much better job of gathering public input.” Province-wide consultations are promised on a range of options. ICBC had said it intended to make drivers pay more for insurance if they have any traffic tickets within the previous three years. That was expected to raise the costs for 30 per cent of drivers, while about two-thirds would pay less. The province’s car insurance company has Bond said she agrees with the goal of giving had to yield to public opposition to its plan to safer drivers lower rates, but defining a highincrease rates for ticketed drivers. risk driver as having one speeding ticket was not Rob Newell photo acceptable to her or the public. “In the course of their work, ICBC made a determination that they had had some minimal consultation, talked about the use of a single speeding ticket, none of which had been discussed with government,” Bond said. “And obviously, the general public didn’t think that was such a good idea either.” She said the B.C. Utilities Commission will still have the final say on rate changes before they take effect. One of the cost pressures ICBC has is that while the number of accidents in B.C. is declining, the cost of personal injury settlements continues to rise.

Patio doors have come a long way from the aluminum sliders that once did little more than gain access to outside.

‘Sliders’ high on reno list By Maggie Calloway Once you have decided to invest in making your outdoor space more inviting, there is one item that should be right up there on your list. Kyle Exner of B.C. Greenhouse Builders suggests an 8’ by 8’ greenhouse for the starter gardener, but warns if you plan to add on in the future, you have to keep that in mind when placing your greenhouse. Martin Knowles photo

Garden room no longer a pipe dream Greenhouses are great yard additions, perfect for growing vegetables and other plants year-round. By Maggie Calloway Lurking deep in the heart of most gardeners is the dream of installing a beautiful greenhouse in the back garden. Many have visions of growing vegetables year-round, volumes of spring flowers and plants ready for planting, and a place to just generally

putter around even on those grey, drizzly days. Considering buying a greenhouse entails much the same decision-making process as home renovations. Just how are you going to use this new addition: are you really planning on becoming self-sustaining in the veggie department, are you dreaming of turning the back 40 into a mini botanical garden, or do you just enjoy growing your own vegetables and flowers from seed and want a place to protect delicate plants and shrubs though the winter? These are all important questions which need well-considered answers to avoid investing in a building which turns into an expensive white elephant.

Now that you have thought through why you want a greenhouse, you need to be realistic about your climate. Do you live in a spot subject to high winds or heavy snow? Let’s face it, life is not all sunshine and roses but sometimes long periods of ice and snow, which means your greenhouse needs to be able to withstand such extremes. One needs to consider these pesky details before taking the plunge. Kyle Exner, of B.C. Greenhouse Builders, is an expert who has very definite ideas on what it takes to pair the perfect greenhouse with the

Thinking of enjoying the benefits of natural gas? Quadra Homes offers high efficiency and lower homeowner expense at Yorkson Creek townhomes in Langley

Something exciting is happening in Langley Quadra Homes has been building quality homes in British Columbia for more than forty years and has earned their reputation as a company with integrity. The Townhomes at Quadra’s Yorkson Creek are built to high standard and are offered at a good price. Features, which would normally be upgrades, are included in the competitive price. Wonderful kitchens include granite countertops and deluxe wood cabinets. A stainless steel appliance package consisting of a side-by-side fridge, dishwasher and microwave is included in each home. A gas range, which is the dream of home chefs, is also included. “A gas dryer is a very compelling component of our townhome package because in the Lower Mainland, using a gas dryer costs about 11 cents to dry a load of clothes. This compares to between 14 cents and 20 cents when using an electric clothes dryer” says Shawn Bouchard of Quadra Homes. This exceptional quality continues throughout the rest of the home with genuine hardwood floors, nine-foot ceilings, natural gas fireplace; all in a central Langley setting with good access to public transit. Now, homebuyers will realize even more value as a result of a very interesting collaboration between

Quadra Homes and Fortis BC. These two British Columbia-based companies have collaborated to make the townhouse section of Quadra’s Yorkson Creek project hit a high environmental standard EnerGuide 80.

For the homeowner this means the monthly cost of running the home is greatly reduced. An added bonus for the first time buyers is that they can obtain a credit from CMHC because this is an EnerGuide 80 project.

“We collaborated with FortisBC on a natural gas pilot program for a number of reasons, including cost savings, unlimited hot water supply, the comfort of a high-end Carrier multi-speed furnace plus the tremendous advantages of gas dryers, stoves, barbecues and fireplaces. After reviewing all these considerations and the EnerGuide 80 rating for the home, we knew this package was a winner” said Quadra Homes Vice President, Paul DaDalt.

Quadra Homes worked with a Certified Energy Advisor to determine the least cost path to a more energy efficient home using natural gas appliances for space heat and domestic hot water. This study was an important first step in ensuring that the project would achieve EnerGuide 80 rating even before construction. Once the studies were complete, decisions were made to install Navien

Shawn Bouchard of Quadra Homes shows the small space used to produce all the heating and hot water needs for each townhome.

gas powered hot water heaters. These on-demand water heaters eliminate the need for a standard hot water tank and the energy needed to maintain water temperature. The Navien, powered by natural gas, boasts the industry’s highest efficiency rating at 98% which means low operating costs. This water heater also provides hot water at a very high gallon-per-minute (GPM) flow rate, which is very convenient for homeowners. The safety of the natural gas powered Navien system is enhanced by dual microprocessors that continually cross monitor performance to assure proper operation at all times. These microprocessors also maintain the steady hot water temperature. The second recommendation of the FortisBC study was the installation of a high-efficiency gas furnace. Quadra installed the Carrier Performance 96 Gas furnace. This furnace is aptly named as 96 cents of every dollar spent is going toward supplying usable heat to the home. The care taken to include highefficiency natural gas powered mechanics and appliances, coupled with high insulation, means the new owner will have a home which is warm and comfortable for the family, respectful to the environment, and costs less to run. Be sure to visit Yorkson Creek located at 208 Street and 82 Avenue in Langley. It is a winner all-around.

Renovations done without permits can seriously hurt the resale value of your home . . . or worse, your family’s safety. The best way to protect your family and your home is to hire a BC Safety Authority licensed contractor with the appropriate permit.

For peace of mind we recommend you hire a licensed contractor. Use this checklist for to make sure they:

A licensed contractor not only ensures safety practices are adhered to, they can help make sure the job runs smoothly. The contractor can obtain the permit on your behalf and manages the inspection process plus they can correct any deficiencies.

• Have liability insurance

A good contractor has the training and expertise required to do the job well and safely. And they employ people who are qualified and bonded. If you wish to “do-it-yourself” and have sufficient knowledge and ability to do the work, you may apply for a permit, provided that the work will be done on a single-family fully detached dwelling that is, or is intended to be, your permanent dwelling. It must not include one or more selfcontained suites and no person is being paid to do the work. If it’s a “do-it-yourself” job, an inspection is required and will be done by a BC Safety Authority Safety Officer to ensure that it’s safe. If the work is to be done by a licensed contractor, the inspection is arranged by them.

• Hold a valid BC Safety Authority Licence

Switch ‘n’ Shrink and get a $1000 rebate Switch from oil or propane to natural gas, install an ENERGY STAR® heating system and get a $1000 rebate.

• Provide references • Are covered through WorkSafeBC • Provide warranties on all work and materials • Submit the written quote with: - Total cost of work - Timeline: start and end date of work - List of permits and the costs (i.e. electrical, gas, building) After hiring a contractor they must provide a: • Copy of each permit before beginning work • Copy of the final declaration

Patio doors add ambiance ›› from page.19 er in the well-defined area of windows and doors. With over 100 years of experience in production and design, they have come a long way from church pews and bee-keeping equipment. The decision to specialize in windows and doors has allowed them to embrace new technologies while staying true to a long tradition specialization. Loewen’s Matt Penner says, “We have some beautiful choices available today to fit both the style of your home and add to the ambiance of your outdoor space. “At Loewen, we strive to provide our customers with the world’s most inspiring windows and doors – but as we inspire, we must also build reliability into everything we make.” We are all familiar with the classic French doors, sometimes referred to as terrace doors; traditional terrace doors hinge in the middle so that one panel is fixed and the other operates. By contrast, French terrace doors are hinged on the outside to allow both doors to operate from the middle. If this is your choice of

door, make sure you decide in advance which way you want the door to swing: inside or outside. Sliding patio doors are still around, but wooden doors that function like large moving windows are more popular than the traditional aluminum version. These striking doors are a huge improvement on the shuddering aluminum doors of yore. Those of us who are dedicated viewers of all things related to home design have seen the bifold terrace doors which, when folded back on themselves, virtually disappear. The bifold allows you to create a feeling of spaciousness by joining the interior and exterior living space. When closed, bifold doors provide privacy and protection while allowing unobstructed views. A fairly new system on the scene is the Loewen LiftSlide. This system allows expansive glass panels, some weighing up to 850 lbs., to roll smoothly and easily. The LiftSlide doors glide, with just the touch of a hand, on almost invisible stainless steel tracks, again allowing a blurring of the division between the interior and exterior space.

Patio doors from Loewen are available in several styles, including French terrace, bifold and LiftSlide. Submitted photos

Gardens go Down to Earth with a spiral design A beautiful garden will be enjoyed for years, but must be carefully done so as not to appear gimmicky. By Maggie Calloway Every now and then, if we are lucky, we have our breath taken away with a sight so striking and so stunning, we are mesmerized. That is how I feel about this Vancouver garden designed and executed by Down to Earth Landscapes, and it comes as no surprise they are the recipient of major awards, both local and national. I had a long chat with Marcyn Ward, co-owner of Down to Earth Landscapes along with Peter Schradi, about this unique garden. “When we started this project we had some very specific requirements for the terrace area in the rear, which are the stone spirals,” Ward says.

“Our client asked that her garden, which she would mostly view from her deck, be fabulous from that angle. “I had a photo of a wooden plinth in a spiral shape and always wanted to design a garden based on this design, and here was the perfect project.” One of the requirements was that the garden look great from above, and had to have closed stone access from the deck into the garage. Down to Earth also had to include an area for a downstairs tenant, and the homeowners have two dogs so a doggy wash area was also important. “We also made provision for a future water feature; the east side of the back terrace has a spiral that is shaped to allow for a specific pre-chosen water feature,” Ward says. “On the west side the spiral is more expanded and it is big enough for two big comfy chairs and a small table.” The trick with a controlled design like this is to get it just right and not to over do or over play, says Ward. With too much tweaking the elegant can become gimmicky. The front garden had an existing landscape done by the builder, which was taken out with the exception of a magnolia tree. The tree was in good shape but required pretty radical structural pruning. The home is beautiful to look at with the magnolia tree, so it was decided not to build a complicated garden with lots of colour. The decision was to keep the front just

green with broadleaf evergreens. “We used two kinds of boxwood. One is the true dwarf boxwood, which we used to develop the lines of the spiral. The other is a form of boxwood called Green Mound - a broad low mound which stays low and dwarf,” says Ward. Down to Earth Landscapes did lots of drawings, working out how they were going to develop the spirals but most of the work was done physically setting up on site and then moving lines. As the garden came together it was viewed from every angle to maximize the view. It was important that as you approach the front door, or walk from the door to the street, you see the spirals. The homeowner is ecstatic with the magical finished garden and so are strangers who wander in off the street. Cars stop on the street and occupants can’t resist wandering the front garden.

This garden, created by Down to Earth Landscaping, is loved by both the homeowner and passersby. The owner says she has seen people wandering around her front garden admiring the landscaping. Submitted photos

Outdoor furniture a great way to accent your living space By Maggie Calloway The garden is looking fabulous, the deck or terrace has been given its spring cleaning, the family is looking forward to spending lots of time with each other and friends enjoying the outdoors, but ... those old rickety chairs and plastic cushions are just not making the grade. You want style and function; you want pizzazz! With more and more families investing in their outdoor space and spending more of their free time at home, people are starting to design their outdoor living space with as much care as they did their interior space. In response to this strong trend, the manufacturers have stepped up to the plate. Outdoor furniture is moving away from heavy furniture, such as teak, in favour of beautifully designed, high-styled, lightweight furniture. Chinz & Co. have always been on the design edge and their selection of outdoor

furniture and accessories is no exception. Maren Vanoene and Joyce Steven are both designers with Chinz. “Clients are looking for modern, contemporary and good quality furniture,” says Vanoene. “They want to be able to leave their garden furniture outside year-round rather than wrestling heavy furniture undercover at the end of the season. They want easy care, which means being able to wash down the furniture with soap and water and have it look great.” Vanoene also says that lighter colours are on trend. “It used to be clients wanted very dark furniture but now more natural colours are emerging. Also, this furniture looks great inside as well as outside. If you need more seating for guests (inside), this would not look out of place.” “Outdoor lighting is as important as interior lighting,” says Steven. “In a seating area an outdoor rug can tie

People are using their outdoor spaces more and more, according to accessories retailer Chintz & Co. A newer trend in outdoor furniture is lightweight and highly styled. Submitted photos everything together and there are some beautiful rugs available now. Lanterns with candles are very effective and romantic in the evening. Pots of colourful flowers or grasses planted in a black container look very striking. Whatever your taste there are many designs to choose from” If you are planning to furnish your outdoor space and don’t know

where to start, take photos from different angles and lots of measurements and take them with you when you go shopping. Stores such as Chinz & Co. have designers on staff who would be delighted to help you pull together a great look. We live such busy lives and maybe the pull of a beautiful outdoor space will entice us to stop, put our feet up and relax with friends and family.

By Maggie Calloway This is the year. This is definitely the year you are going to build those beautiful retaining walls you have drooled over for years, along with the paved terrace, driveway and pathways. Your garden is going to be a thing of beauty, with a bit of determination, correct product and great advice. It would be the stuff of nightmares to have a large truck arrive, drop a great pile of stone in your driveway, and leave you with no idea where to begin. Fear not, there is help at hand. Metro Vancouver is fortunate to have a company like Northwest Landscape & Stone Supply. In business for more than 30 years and with a long reputation of servicing both the trade and the homeowner, Northwest can answer any question you throw at them. But first, you need to do some homework. What are you trying to achieve? What is your budget? Even if resources don’t stretch to completing the job this year, you should spend time working out the entire plan. Once you have a good idea of your goals, you’ll need decide the order in which each job should be carried out. Northwest has a great website to help you do a professional job (www.landscapesupply. com).

Planning on building a Drystack wall or laying a flagstone patio, with or without mortar? dreamed. “The company started with the owner, Don Fraser, selling railway ties from his garage then moved to the property on Byrne Rd in Burnaby many years ago,” says Northwest’s David Nelson. “He gradually added products as the demand grew and here we are today. The next step was buying up basalt quarries up along the Squamish/Whistler corridor, which still harvest today.” Nelson’s advice to homeowners planning on building a drystacking wall, which are recommended up to three feet high, is to first make a base of gravel which helps level the ground and assists drainage. Stacking the stone is easy, but make sure you use the one-over-two method. This makes sure the seams are not in a straight line, which is not only unattractive but creates water channels. Halfway up the wall you need bond stones, which are longer stones that front the wall as the other stones, but reach further back into the bank to anchor the wall. As you begin to stack the wall, working from one end to the other, you must slope it back toward the high ground, or “batter the wall.” With this slight leaning back, the bond stones and gravity all contribute to producing a solid wall. Another hint is to place landscape fabric behind the wall, which stops mud coming through the wall and spoiling the look. “It’s great when customers come back and show us photos of their beautiful completed projects,” says Nelson. “Large boulders are very popular, either as a focal point in the garden or as part of a larger setting. Northwest uses boulders from their own quarry, and don’t do any blasting. “These fall off the mountain naturally, some are 4 to 5ft across some with the moss and lichen still in place … We are very proud not to blast or bore into the mountain side; we let Mother Nature take her course and harvest what she sheds. “We are also very careful not to handle the harvest more than necessary. This maintains The addition of stone walkways, paving stones or retaining walls the natural look of the stone without claw marks, contributes to a gorgeous new look to your property, according to Northwest Landscaping & Stone Supply’s David Nelson. etc. from overhandling.”

Greenhouses offer enthusiasts year-round opportunity to exercise their green thumbs ›› from page.19 home gardener. “Do they want a productive greenhouse that’s going to be the easiest possible greenhouse to grow in, or are they looking for a greenhouse which will be a showpiece in the garden?â€? Exner said. “If the goal is a greenhouse which will add value to the property and look fabulous with hanging baskets and flowers, we would steer them towards a glass greenhouse but if the primary focus is on, say, food production we would steer them towards a polycarbonate greenhouse.â€? Other practical details also come into play – do you need a building permit in your municipality? What is the best location for your greenhouse? If you’re looking for the best spot, keep in mind that the optimal position is with the longest side of the greenhouse facing south. Six hours of available sunlight in the winter is ideal. Find out what kind of foundation is suitable for your location. If you choose concrete you are committing to a permanent site, whereas a wood frame foundation permits both the ability to move the greenhouse if necessary and the possibility of extending the structure’s length in the future. Flooring is another decision; if you leave the soil as is, so as to grow directly in it with tomatoes for instance, keep in mind that if your tomatoes get a disease, you have a problem that may take a couple of years to resolve. Gravel is a popular choice as it is easy on the feet, can easily be installed and is easy to maintain. A concrete floor, as mentioned ear-

Gardeners who would like a larger greenhouse but are concerned about the cost of heating a big space can control the area being used at any given time in the growing season by installing a temporary wall. Martin Knowles photos

lier, is a more permanent choice that can be maintained just by hosing off into a drain. All are good choices which need to be thought through in advance. “A good starter greenhouse is an 8’ x 8’, says Exner. “This is much better than a 6’ x 8’ because it gives two 32-inch wide growing benches plus a 30-inch walkway so you are not cramped. Exner warns that if you are planning to add onto your new greenhouse in the future, you will need to keep that in mind when you’re building the original structure. Gardeners who would like a larger greenhouse but are concerned about the cost of heating a big space can control the area being used at any given time in the growing season by installing a temporary wall. This allows just a section of the greenhouse to be

heated, say early in the season when seeding. As you start potting up and require more space, the temporary wall can be gradually moved to accommodate your specific needs. At the other end of the season, a temporary wall allows you to section off the greenhouse to keep tropical plants safe over the winter in one section and keep plants dormant in the other. The heat spillover from the tropical side is enough to keep your dormant plants from freezing. If you are looking for a space in the garden which expands your living and entertaining space, a garden room may fit the bill. “Our garden room greenhouses are the ultimate in glass houses. These are definitely estate greenhouses, says Exner. “We make them a fully functional growing or living/growing space meaning you will

have active ventilation and exhaust system and motorized ridge vents. We use different gauges of tubular aluminum frames to give them a wider profile; they look like they are wood beams. This means that, along with stainless steel fasteners, there are no maintenance issues, he says. “Typically, garden rooms are all glass, although we have produced some with polycarbonate roofs for both insulation and shading, Exner says. “But now, with the high performance soft coat Low E glass available, all-glass garden rooms work well. If you are a gardener, installing a greenhouse is the ultimate, so enjoy every minute of it for years to come. Mowing a large lawn seems like such a simple task and it can be if you have a yard or garden tractor with the right features. Turn Tight™ Technology enables homeowners to manicure their lawn quickly and easily while reducing the amount of gas needed to get the job done. This is because Turn Tight™ technology features an innovative steering system to help the user closely mow around objects, like garden gnomes, and quickly and easily cut grass around tight spaces created by trees and flower beds without the need to reverse. Turn Tight™ Technology is an

innovative steering system that offers a tighter turning radius to be able to efficiently mow around obstacles, such as garden beds and shrubs, without using the reverse motion. This means that in many instances you do not have to get off your tractor to complete the job manually. For open areas, a tight turning radius is important as it allows users to quickly turn around and mow parallel to the last mowed swath in the opposite direction. Tractors with a large turning radius require more time and more use of the reverse gear to properly position the unit for parallel path mowing. Turn Tight™ Technology is unique to models of Craftsman yard and garden tractors and is a great choice for homeowners as it offers the maneuverability of a zero-turn tractor but in a comfortable, compact design that is easier to learn to drive and better on hills. The new Turn Tight™ Technology is available exclusively at Sears Canada.

West Vancouver youth recognized for community spirit

L

ast week, West Vancouver Community Centre was packed with the district’s up and coming. The evening soiree marked the 10th anniversary of West Vancouver’s annual Youth Appreciation Awards. The District of West Vancouver received more than 160 individual nominations in 54 proposals, representing 6,055 youth between the ages of 10 to 19. Last week The Outlook featured individual youth recipients. This week we take a look at the youth team service award. • Laura Matthias, Perry Finnbogason, Kelly Trach, Jillian Trach, Kirsten Bradford, Lauren Telford, Jonathan Harrison, Sam Gray, Scott Panther and Tara Tyab are the executive of Rockridge’s Interact Club, associated with the Rotary Club of West Vancouver – Sunrise. They raise funds to support polio vaccinations, shelter initiatives, well projects, clothing and literacy initiatives in communities close to home (in East Vancouver and a remote aboriginal community) and as far away as Liberia and Sierra Leone. • After the terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Ariana Sairafi and Katrina Davis sprung into action by selling ‘Japan Strong’ bracelets to their peers at Collingwood school. They then contacted the student leaders of the other West Vancouver high schools to share their ideas and inspire others. They raised $850 for Japan. • Sheida Arjmandi, Nakisa Kiai, Rozita Taeidi and Lauren Desjardins played a leadership role in organizing events and fundraising initiatives that have contributed $2,000 to Willing Hearts International Society to support scholarships for low-income students who would not otherwise be able to continue their schooling. • Alex Pai, Alexa Barran, Alexia Jeangrand, Alina Salemohamed, Armaan Malhorta, Clement Chui, Dora Leung, Emma Choo, Haley Stuart, James Shih, Karina Faruya, Laura Pan, Lina Chang, Maya Uhryniuk, Melissa Chui, Michelle Wong, Nabil Kamdar, Nathan Chan, Nicole Hui, Queenie Sui, Ryan Yan, Sammy Morrison, Sonia Lee, Hannah Robinovitch, Michelle Tam, Alaina Wong, Jason Kim, Melissa Winkler, Hayley Elliot, Caitlin Jeangrand, Taylor Stratford, Ashley Callister, Katie Kwan, Jason Kim, Mikaela Verigin, Marcie Weiss, Sanja Vicentijevic, Vivian Lin, Cherry Fung and Kim Lee worked for the Cinderella Project to raise funds so that underprivileged Lower Mainland grads can attend their prom in style. • Taylor Balagno, Sarah Won, Claire Longcroft, Alexandra Roberts-Mendel and Jonathan Harrison have done an exceptional amount of work with Cyclebetes, a 24-hour fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes. They have put in a total of 400 volunteer hours to create community involvement and raise awareness of young people with this disease. • Jonathan Harrison, Kelsey Dennison, Laura Gardiner, Tyler Son, Brian Irwin and Callum Kelpin have made it their mission to reduce waste at their school as part of the Rockridge Environment Club. The results are significant: they have recycled over 2,500 plastic water bottles; diverted over 600 pounds of organic waste; launched a school garden; and undertaken a staff and student education campaign. They are part of West Vancouver secondary school’s Environment Protection Network. • Amir Rose, Andrew Moore, Bryan Leong, Celine Jeon, Elizabeth Bell-Fumagalli, George Bell-Fumagalli, Hillary Rejito, Jackson Lees, Joshua Larsen, Julie Jeon, Kevin Hunt, Lauren Hamilton, Lily Landy, Lin Chen, Minah Seo, Peter Miller, Rachael Dyck and Zacharia Mok are this year’s members of SWAT – a youth committee co-supported by the West Vancouver Police Department and the District of West Vancouver to develop leadership skills, communication strategies, civic responsibility and cultural awareness. • Danielle TenVaanholt, Jordan Lewis and Caroline Leitch are part of a club at Rockridge that helps fundraise and raise awareness for a school in Zambia called Umoyo. Umoyo provides education and support for young girls who have contracted either HIV or AIDS and are lacking a family support system. This year, the club raised $2,500. • Jack MacPhail and Elham Hassantash organized Mulgrave school’s first ever student-driven Global Week, with a focus on “Can technology save the world?” They coordinated a week of events and facilitated a major two-day conference for all Grade 10s. The program is now integrated into the core curriculum. It was a phenomenal success and a great global education initiative for all. • Dikran Karakas, Emma Lian, Jiali Chen, Lucy Zhao, Minah Seo, Minyi Zhu, Peter Miller, Rufina Ip, and Surhyun Hur form the recreation advisory team for the district. They assisted district staff on program development for youth and on event planning for the community centre. • Armann Ali, Hossein Sahiholnasab and Charlie Hart led a student team that ran this year’s Service Action Council’s Spirit Week campaign at Mulgrave School in support of the international humanitarian organization Right To Play. They conducted a successful sports equipment drive, lunch and playathon, and raised over $2,500. • Tatiana Mawani, Lexi Macdonald and Kristina Cho have worked to improve their community through active involvement in Collingwood School’s Round Square Program to connect students with the world around them. They played a leadership role in a 30-hour fast that raised over $6,000 for Doctors Without Borders and Earth Week. • Alex Son, Ashley Kim, Celine Chen, Chloe Kim, Hannah Robinovitch, Jamilla Janmohamed, Jiali Chen, Jillian Trach, Julia Tikhonova, Juliette Levine, Kelly Trach, Mariela Moen, Minah Seo, Rachael Dyck, Rachel Ingram, Rufina Ip, Samiya Hassan, Sierra Webb, Su Ji An, Tiffany Liao and Ye Ji An are the current members of West Vancouver’s youth advisory committee. They provide an effective voice in local government. They engaged in dialogue and established partnerships that affect youth interests and well-being, assisting in the implementation of West Vancouver’s Civic Youth Strategy.

Doc and the Vacuum Cleaner A freak injury has bonded Hal Younker and Brooks Robinson for life

I

love talking baseball history. So spending two hours with Harold “Doc” Younker the other day was special. You see, Doc - who turns 90 on August 4th - was not only a trainer for baseball clubs and other sports teams for some 50 years which earned him a place in the INSTANT Canadian Baseball REPLAY Hall of Fame in St. Mary’s, Ont., Len Corben in 2005, but also lencorben@yahoo.ca a hall-of-fame vacuum cleaner repairman. Okay, okay, there is no vacuum cleaner repairmen hall of fame, although Brooks Robinson would be the first to nominate Doc for induction if there were one. Yes, as you may know, that’s the same Brooks Robinson who was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., after earning gold gloves as the American League’s top-fielding third baseman in 16 of the 17 full seasons he played for the Baltimore Orioles over 23 years. However, unless you are a very big baseball fan, you wouldn’t know that in 1959 the plug could have been pulled on Robinson’s soon-tobe-stellar major league career while playing for the Vancouver Mounties of the AAA-level Pacific Coast League if it had not been for Doc and his expertise with muscles and vacuum cleaners. Well, at least one vacuum cleaner. No, not a Hoover or an Electrolux, but a Brooks Robinson model. You see, Robinson would become widely known as “The Human Vacuum Cleaner” for his fielding superiority in scooping up grounders and snagging line drives at the hot corner. But on May 17, 1959 - 52 years ago this week - Robinson snagged something else while chasing a pop foul at beloved Capilano (now Nat Bailey) Stadium in Vancouver. Reaching for the ball over the

Da mion Dorn

»

Mounties’ dugout railing, he caught his right arm on a piece of wire protruding from the chain link fence. The sharp metal pierced Robinson’s throwing arm and coiled itself around the tendon. So he was literally hooked on the fence and Doc had to figure out how to carefully get him off without careerending damage. “I see him hanging on the fence,” Doc recalls as we chat in his third-floor room at the Lynn Valley Care Centre that overlooks Lynn Valley Road and which has a perfect view of snowcapped North Shore mountains in the distance. “What am I going to do? I’ve never had one of these [situations],” he remembers saying to himself. “All I’m thinking of is how I’m going to get Brooks Robinson off that fence. I got a stepladder and took him down with help from some of the players. I got a bottle of merthiolate and put that on and put a tourniquet on him and wrapped him up in my white towels. “I called the ambulance but they never showed up [so] I said I’m taking you to the hospital, I’m not waiting any longer. I put on all the lights on my car and somebody called [Nat] Bailey’s store on the corner [the White Spot near the ballpark on Cambie] and they went out and one of the guys stopped the traffic and I made a right turn down the street and away we went with the vehicle full of blood.” Younker says he got into a bit of hot water with the Mounties’ management over his decision to transport Robinson to the hospital himself. But, hey, you’d have to say his cool handling of Robinson’s impaling and his impatience with the ambulance service paid off big time as the pair were to be forever linked on their way to hall-of-fame immortality. Robinson, who played the full

Doc Younker (above with photos of Brooks Robinson and himself) was the trainer who saved the brilliant hall-of-fame career of the Baltimore Orioles’ third baseman following a bizarre accident 52 years ago this week when both were with the Pacific Coast League’s Vancouver Mounties in 1959. Len Corben photo season with Baltimore the year before but was sent to the minors to improve on his anemic 1958 batting average of .238, had successful surgery on the arm while missing 25 Vancouver games. He was still only hitting AAA pitching for a .263 average when the accident happened exactly one day before his 22nd birthday. Oddly, though, when he returned to action he crushed the ball at a .352 pace and was called back up to Baltimore on July 8th just in time to meet his future wife, a stewardess from Windsor, Ontario, on an Orioles’ flight out of Kansas City later that month. While Robinson continued his hall-of-fame journey in the east, Younker did likewise on the west coast. Born in Auburn Washington, Younker umpired in the class-A Western International League during the 1953 season before becoming trainer for the 1954 WIL-champion Vancouver Capilanos and the 1955 PCL-winning Seattle Rainiers. After spending 1956-59 with the Mounties, he took on various major and minor league assignments including 1961 with the American Leagueexpansion Los Angeles Angels and 1976-85 with the San Diego Padres (whose 1984 National League championship ring he still wears). Other highlights on his extensive resume include work with Team Canada’s baseball squads at the Pan-American Games in Mexico in 1975, Puerto Rico in 1979, Indianapolis in 1987 and Cuba in 1991, plus the Seoul Olympics in 1988. He even spent time with the Los Angeles Jets of the one-season American Basketball League in 1961-62 and with Junior A hockey’s Langley Lords during the 1970s.

This is episode 421 from Len Corben’s treasure chest of stories – the great events and the quirky – that bring to life the North Shore’s rich sports history.

He also established training rooms at several Arizona high schools, teaching classes in First Aid and physiotherapy, and was a dozen years with National Baseball Institute teams in Vancouver. More recently he was trainer for UBC’s baseball Thunderbirds and the Okanagan-based Big League Experience camps. No wonder he received Baseball BC’s Roll of Honour Award as a builder in 1990 and Baseball Canada’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996, to say nothing of his 2005 induction into Canada’s Baseball Hall of Fame, the same year Dave Stieb of the Toronto Blue Jays and Steve Rogers of the Montreal Expos were also inducted. “I’m proud as a peacock,” he says quietly. “I’ve been around the world and really, really enjoyed it [his career].” After living in places all up and down the coast as his work dictated, he resided in Langley for over 30 years and then for five in the Okanagan. His move to Lynn Valley 11 months ago puts him closer to his daughter, Vicki Thomas, who lives in West Vancouver. Not long ago, after having some health issues, Doc received a photo in the mail with a message on it. Now framed and hanging on his wall along with other baseball photos, it says, “Long time no see. Thinking about you and all the great times we had. Good Luck. Brooks Robinson.” That freak injury so long ago has bonded Robinson and Younker for life.

Where did you grow up? “I was born in Brazil and have lived in Germany, Switzerland and Florida. My parents liked travelling. I was five when I moved to West Vancouver. I went to Mulgrave but moved to West Van in Grade 10 because Mulgrave didn’t have a football team.” Which track event do you like best? “That’s a tough one. The 100 I guess. I’m better at the 200. I want to win the 200 at the North Shore meet and qualify for the BCs. I have a chance. I’d love to win both.” In what time period would you like to have lived? “That’s a good one. The 1980s because of the culture and the music, old school rap. That’s actually the 1990s but you’d hope to live to then..” What talent do you wish you had? “Be a genius. Fly through school.” What would you take to a deserted island? “Water and the longest book I could find.”

n the beginning they marched at the J.P. Fell Armoury in North Vancouver. Then it was down to Ambleside, before heading up the hill to what was the old YMCA. “We were very nomadic for a while,” said Angela Sargent, an officer cadet with West Vancouver’s 525 Pathfinder Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron. As the squadron celebrates its 60th birthday, it has a new home in St. Anthony’s School on Keith Road. It’s also grown. A few years ago the group consisted of 25 air cadets. Today that number has topped 50. Sargent got involved through her son. His interest was piqued when he came across a pair of shiny shoes at West Van’s community day. The shiny shoes Timothy spotted belonged to a cadet, a cadet who told Timothy he too could have shinny shoes if he joined up. As soon as Timothy was 12 years old, that’s what he did. “He loved the friends and camaraderie,” Sargent said. Timothy grew too old for the program last year, but Sargent is still with the squadron making sure others have the same experience as her son. She’s got the help of other diehards like the commanding officer, Captain Andy Smith. Through summer programs and weekend courses, Sargent has seen cadets accomplish such tasks as gaining their pilot’s licences. In fact, two of the squadron’s current cadets have such certification. Sargent has been lucky enough to also fly with them as a passenger. “It’s amazing. They are incredible young people.” To learn more, visit www.525pathfinder.com or the Squadron’s Facebook page — RCAC 525 Pathfinder Squadron.
