Additional Funding for North Shore Non-profit Groups More than 50 non-profit community groups on the North Shore received $1.2 million in community gaming grants in February, and an additional $402,000 in March. This will bring many of these organizations back up to historical funding levels, and will assist them to continue providing high quality programs for North Shore residents. North Shore Disability Resource Centre is one of many organizations that received “top up” funding.
Parkgate Community Centre received over $70,000 which will benefit many groups such as these moms and tots.
All School Parent Advisory Councils, such as this one at Windsor Secondary, received a $20 per student grant last fall and an additional $5 per student in March.

Five national, two provincial awards for the Outlook
I
t was a winning weekend for the North Shore Outlook. The newspaper picked up five awards over the past weekend, including a second-place finish as the best community newspaper in Canada in its circulation category. “The North Shore Outlook has grown to be a solid contender in the general excellence category,” says the judge with the Canadian Community Newspaper Association. “With an attractive front page, great use of colour throughout and great layout and design, this paper deserves to be in second place.” The Outlook also won a secondplace award for its front page. The paper’s team of writers and photographers won third place in Canada for best coverage of the arts. “The articles were a pleasure to read,” the judge said. “I found myself drawn into the articles and wanting to know more about the artists, which is the goal of all writers. Photographs were very good.” In the Great Ideas competition, The Outlook’s talented creative team of Tannis Hendriks, Maryann Erlam and Doug Aylsworth picked up two awards. The 1st annual Healthy Aging Fair came first among all community newspapers in Canada with a circulation greater than 12,500 in the promotional campaign category. The West Van Florist ad series

oon cranes will be at Lions Gate Hospital to start building a $62.2-million acute mental health facility. After five years of planning, on Friday, April 29, the province announced it would back the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation in its push for the much anticipated new facility. The current Activation building, which was constructed in 1929, is “woefully out of date,” Minister of Health Michael de Jong said at the project’s unveiling. The new four-storey, 26-bed facility includes a space for the University of British Columbia faculty of medicine and a new ambulance station for BC Ambulance Service. The plan wouldn’t have come to fruition without the hard work of the foundation, de Jong said. Over the years the volunteer organization has raised $70 million for Lions Gate Hospital. With the completion of North Shore Hospice, the foundation is focusing on its $25-million commitment

Rocking the rink Odds frontman and North Vancouver resident Craig Northey says being the Canucks’ house band means bringing the game’s intensity ‘over the glass’
Every bride deserves to be a princess on her wedding day.

Arrange for your complimentary wedding consultation today.
The Odds get Canucks fans geared up for a clash with the Nashville Predators at Rogers Arena last week. The group has been the team’s house band for two playoff runs. Submitted photo you’re watching. The live music reflects the live game. Anything could happen. It’s about bringing that feel over the glass and into the crowd.” Northey says the intensity he feels in the stands on game nights is “eight or ten times” that of a regular season contest. “There’s a lot of nervous energy and a lot of noise. Sometimes it’s crazy. It gets so loud you can barely hear the band at some points,” he says. Last week, when centre Alex Burrows scored only a few minutes into the first period of Game 7, Northey says the “expectations of the city exploded” inside the arena. But as the game ticked on, tension built and built, until finally the Chicago Blackhawks tied it up in the dying minutes of the third period. “At that point it felt like the air was sucked out of the room,” he says. “Everything went quiet. You could hear this collective groan. There were a lot of people making physical contact after that... people clutching one another’s sleeves or looking to each other for support.” As lifelong Canucks fans, Northey says the band feels fortunate to be in the building cheering with 18,000 other supporters. The role as house band is not one they ever thought they’d find themselves in, he adds, but it’s one they’re happy to fill. “It’s a fairly bizarre occurrence, but a great combination of our passions,” he says. “To do something like this you can’t be pretentious. We’re a band that’s made our own albums and worked very hard to make a name for ourselves. A lot of other bands in our position might refuse to play these classic rock riffs, but we’re so comfortable at this point in our own skin, that it’s just another opportunity to have a great time. “We’re all huge hockey fans and Canucks fans in particular, so if we in any way feel like we’ve helped sway the game in their favour, then we’ve done something monumental for the eight-yearold boys that live inside us,” Northey adds with a smile. ghoekstra@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/greghoekstra

hen the Vancouver Canucks take to the ice this Saturday for their Game 5 showdown against the Nashville Predators, North Vancouver’s Craig Northey will be warmed up and ready to go. No, he won’t be lacing up a pair of skates to join the team in battle, but with an electric guitar strapped to his chest, he’s hopeful he can help influence the game’s outcome nonetheless. Northey is the frontman of Odds, the Canadian rock outfit who, for the second year running, has been named the Vancouver Canucks’ house band for the playoffs. COFFEE Before the first puck drop, WITH and in between each period, the band launches into classic Greg Hoekstra rock numbers — what Northey ghoekstra@northshore describes as “mondo guitar riff outlook.com tunes” — in an effort to whip the hometown fans at Rogers Arena into a frenzy. “Usually we’re kind of ironic, dark humourists, but we’ve discovered irony doesn’t read very well in a crowd over 10,000 people,” laughs Northey, from the patio of an Edgemont Village coffee shop. “In that vast space you can’t be too busy with anything, so we like to stick to huge riff-rock songs.” During Game 7 against the Chicago Blackhawks, for example, the band cranked out classic tunes by Boston, KISS, Aerosmith and the Kinks. In the past they’ve also teamed up with rink organist Mike Kenney on The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild” and Deep Purple’s hyperactive “Highway Star.” What makes the house band unique from others in professional sports is not their set list, but their approach. Using state-of-the-art technology and an inear monitoring system, the band is able to split up and mingle with fans in different areas of the rink — something Northey calls a “guerilla technique” to stadium rock. The end result, he says, is a connection between musicians and fans that can’t be accomplished with pre-recorded songs. “I think it brings a human element back to the music,” he says. “Playing it live, in the crowd, makes the music feels on edge, just like the game

Stats Canada launches census
T
he 2011 Census is underway with more than 15 million dwellings receiving yellow census packages. For the first time, 60 per cent of households will receive a letter replacing the traditional paper questionnaire. This letter will provide information to allow respondents to complete the questionnaire online. It will also contain a toll-free number respondents can call to request a paper questionnaire if preferred. The remaining dwellings will
receive paper questionnaires in both official languages. The 2011 Census consists of questions on age, sex, marital and common-law status, family relationships, language and consent to release personal information after 92 years. Census information is important for all communities and is vital for planning services, such as schools, daycare, police and fire. Statistics Canada encourages all households to complete the census.

Seeking the senior vote North Shore survey aims to capture seniors’ issues for future planning REBECCA ALDOUS S TA F F R E P O RT E R

t’s about capturing seniors’ voices in planning for the future, Jane Osborne says. Beside her, in a quiet office in the John Braithwaite Community Centre, sits Glenys McMillan. Since the beginning of 2011, the two volunteers helped put together one of the most comprehensive seniors’ surveys to be handed out on the North Shore. Based on the World Health Organization’s Age Friendly Cities Project, the survey covers eight areas — public transportation, housing, social participation, inclusion, employment and volunteerism, public spaces, health services and age friendly communication and information. “The real thing we hope will come from this is that it is going to drive some actions,” says Osborne, the survey leader. “That is why we are trying to involve so many seniors.” With funding from United Way, the Lionsview Seniors’ Planning Society survey has caught the attention of local municipalities, service groups and private business. The results will not only help non-profit organizations, such as Lionsview, set out priorities, but they could aid community planning. And as North Shore residents grey, seniors’ issues become more prevalent, Osborne notes. “The biggest challenge of course, is there are more and more and more of us,” she says. In a pilot project, 280 questionnaires were handed out within the City of North Vancouver. Of those 146 were returned and more are still dribbling in. Survey organizations are trying to catch a diverse cross-section of the senior population. Focus groups were held at Silver Harbour Seniors Centre, John Braithwaite Community Centre and St. John the Evangelist church in North Vancouver. McMillan, whose career was in social work, says it’s important to include seniors who are isolated from the community and support groups. A lot of surveys she’s seen over the years make
Volunteers Jane Osborne (left) and Glenys McMillan helped design a comprehensive survey for local seniors. Rebecca Aldous photo big assumptions when it comes to what seniors want, McMillan adds. “Ageism is something that really riles me,” she says, noting this survey’s questions steer away from categorizing individuals. Focus groups have brought up issues such as housing. McMillan lives in a subsidized unit at the Kiwanis Towers. There is a growing wait-list to the get into the buildings and many seniors are confronted with the decision of leaving the North Shore for affordable housing in the Lower Mainland, McMillan says. She suspects the survey will highlight such issues. Beginning on May 9, the survey will be distributed throughout the North Shore. Residents will have until the third week in June to respond. “We are talking about at least 3,000 surveys,” Osborne says. Paper surveys are available through Lionsview society, municipalities and community centres. Respondents can also fill out the forms online by visiting one of the three municipal websites or www.lionsviewseniorsplanning.com. For more information call 604-601-1271.

T
wo great nights highlight last week’s events and activities. First, it was time to dress to the nines with the parents and friends of North Vancouver’s Sutherland Secondary school for their first-ever Starry Nights Black and White Gala. Designed as a fundraiser for the school and the primary feeder schools, this elegant evening was held at North Vancouver’s Le Bistro Chez Michel and featured silent and live auction items and a chance to dance the night away to a live band. Next, it was the gang at North Vancouver’s Louis Gervais Fine Foods and Catering who put on the ritz for foodie fans to come sip and sample. The affable kitchen crew cooked up a storm designed to showcase both their location and their talents in a delightful and delicious afternoon reception. And while I’m already a pretty good little cook, I plan on going back for one of their fabulous cooking classes very soon.

A
t times during the night, John Weston looked like he was a hockey fan cheering on his favourite team. Dressed in a Canucks jersey, the Conservative winner of the West VancouverSunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country riding sat glued in front of the television at his campaign headquarters in Dundarave, watching the poll results scroll across the screen. Every time his team scored, a cheer would erupt. He’d smile, looking more and more relaxed as Team Stephen Harper racked up the goals. Only an hour after the polls closed, his campaign manager, David Bromley, was declaring victory. An hour after that the score was Weston 25,214, NDP Terry Platt 12,893, Liberal Dan Veniez 12,309 and Green Party Brennan Wauters, 4,043. Instead of going into overtime like the Canucks, the celebrating went into overdrive. Bromley says that Weston had won 90 per cent of the polls, and most of them by a twoto-one margin. The only polls Weston had lost – to Veniez – were on Bowen Island. “We had the finest of leaders, the finest of platforms, the finest of places to live and the finest of volunteers,” Weston told the crowd with his wife Donna and sons Shane, 14 (a Justin Bieber lookalike), Jake, 12 and 10-year-old daughter Mei Mei by his side. “So that means,” the two-time winner said, “that we have a great responsibility going forward.” Over at Veniez’s election night headquarter at Beach House Restaurant, the mood was subdued, as if everyone couldn’t believe the results. The Liberal candidate arrived just after his leader Michael Ignatieff had conceded defeat. At first he was anxious and it wasn’t long before it became clear that Weston was going to win. Not only that, but runner up was the NDP’s Platt, who was watching the results in Gibsons. “We can never, ever take the Canadian population for granted,” Veniez said. Although there was much mudslinging between him and Weston, he doesn’t think that affected the way people voted. Speaking to the crowd of about 50 people, he said, “I can’t say that it has been fun because it hasn’t been fun, but it’s been an incredible learning experience, and it’s been a tough one.” While Veniez’s campaign might have been surprised by the results, at Weston’s cam-
paign headquarters the mood was buoyant and optimistic right from the start, especially since the national results were so strongly in their party’s favour. Bromley said he wasn’t surprised that Platt was second in the polls. “She lives in the riding and that’s important,” he said. “Terry’s a good person.” But his faith was in his own candidate from the start. “John is one tremendous candidate. He worked his heart out. John today spent his time on Sechelt covered with an umbrella and waving at people.” Weston says his campaign was all about continuing with the country’s economic recovery at a time when everyone was thinking about their jobs. He praised his leader, his family, his campaign team, including 600 volunteers, and the people of the riding. Weston, a lawyer, made his first bid for federal politics in 2006, losing by just 1,000 votes to Liberal Blair Wilson. Shortly before the 2008 election was called, Wilson switched his allegiance to the Green Party, becoming that party’s first Member of Parliament. Wilson ran as the Green Party candidate in 2008, coming in fourth. Weston won the 2008 election with 27,000 or 44.57 per cent of the votes. Liberal Ian
Sutherland came in a distant second with 16,000 votes followed by NDP candidate Bill Forst, who won five more votes (8,728 to 8,725) than Wilson. PRELIMINARY RESULTS Conservative John Weston: 28,711 votes or 44.5 per cent of votes, roughly the same percentage of votes as in 2008 NDP Terry Platt: 14,812 votes or 23.5 per cent, up nine per cent for the party compared to 2008 Liberal Dan Veniez: 14,103 votes or 22.3 per cent, down four per cent from the previous candidate in 2008 Green Party Brennan Wauters: 4,597 votes or 7.3 per cent, roughly half the votes that Wilson got in 2008 PCP Roger Legassé: 342 votes or 0.5 per cent Libertarian Tunya Audain: 244 votes or 0.4 per cent WBP Allan Holt: 157 votes or 0.2 per cent Marxist-Leninist Carol Lee Chapman: 87 votes or 0.1 per cent CAP Doug Hartt: 64 votes or 0.1 per cent In the riding, 64.2 per cent of eligible voters made their way to the polls compared to a national average of 61 per cent.

inutes after Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff’s sobering consent to defeat, Dan Veniez arrives at the Beach House. There’s an anxious, modest crowd gathered in an upstairs room. They cheer as the West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast —Sea-to-Sky Liberal candidate climbs the stairs. Veniez’s campaign managers stay huddled around a computer as poll results come in. They enter the figures into a laptop that’s hooked up to a projector, but they’re not flashing the stats on the big screen. Media outlets are reporting that Conservative incumbent John Weston has been re-elected, but the big surprise is NDP candidate Terry Platt. She’s the runner up. Veniez sits down to look at the figures. He chalks the upset
down to the national orange surge, rather than a failed campaign. “I wouldn’t really change anything,” he says. “Everyone was surprised at what occurred nationally.” Much attention in the riding’s campaign was placed on the bitter battle between Veniez and Weston. Days before the election Veniez filed a notice of civil claim in the B.C. Supreme Court against four people, including Weston. The claim also named Coquitlam’s Paul Veltmeyer, who wrote a letter to Weston about Veniez, and John and Jane Doe, who posted a YouTube video about Veniez’s role with a troubled forestry company. The YouTube video included clips of Veniez’s answers to questions about pension fund policies with statements about
Veniez’s involvement with Skeena group and the impact on workers’ pensions when the company went into bankruptcy. “We all should win an election fair and square on ideas, not lies,” Veniez says, stopping short of saying the mudslinging affected the outcome. Fear of a NDP government may have pushed some voters to mark an X beside the Conservative’s box, Veniez says. With the ballots counted, Veniez says he’s proud to have been a candidate under Ignatieff’s leadership. “The polls we were counting on in West Van went Conservative,” he says. Getting ready to address the crowd, Veniez moves to the front of the room. In front of a large television screen flashing coverage of NDP leader Jack Layton, Veniez says his speech
consists of this, putting his hands on his head. He thanks his friends, supporters and wife for their time and effort, noting the couple missed their 16th anniversary amid election fever. The campaign was tough,
Veniez says, and an incredible learning experience. “Folks are craving for honesty,” he says. “We were hoping that it would be us, but we were caught in a wave.”
o one was more surprised than Terry Platt. Surrounded by supporters at the Blackfish Pub in Gibsons, the West Vancouver —Sunshine Coast — Sea-to-Sky NDP candidate went into the evening expecting the “two shiny men in shiny suits” to be battling for top spot. But early in the night Platt was in the lead before holding steady as the runner up. “My campaign manager said
I should have seen the look on my face,” Platt tells The Outlook the morning after the election. During the campaign, Platt didn’t put herself in the same pool with Conservative incumbent John Weston or Liberal candidate Dan Veniez. She’s not as politically savvy, she says, adding she acts no differently on or off the campaign trail. While Weston and Veniez were tangled in a war of words, she simply didn’t have any mud to sling,
Platt says, noting she was still receiving what she dubs “inappropriate” press releases from Weston’s office regarding Veniez at eight and nine o’clock Sunday night. Platt’s campaign in West Vancouver was simple. It consisted of her and her campaign manager. Instead of spending money on renting campaign offices, she bought a Blackberry. “I’ve been fielding a lot of phone calls and I am still trying
to figure out this Blackberry,” she says. Much like herself, NDP leader Jack Layton is the down-to-earth option Canadians want, Platt says, noting voters were asking for a real opposition. Layton and the other 101 NDP candidates will make fine watchdogs in Parliament, she says. “[Prime Minister Stephen] Harper should watch his back and ankles,” Platt says. While the NDP gets set to
become the official opposition for the first time in Canadian history, Platt is heading out to gather up her campaign signs. She’s also agreed to pick up Green Party candidate Brennan Wauters’s placards, as he’s a one-man team. Then it’s back to work for the BC Ferry employee aboard the Queen of Oak Bay. “I didn’t once use my employee benefit ferry pass during the campaign,” Platt notes.

rennan Wauters sits at the bar in the Village Taphouse monitoring his computer screen. His West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country Green Party candidate button rests on the dark wood countertop beside him. On the website, incumbent John Weston’s Conservative blue has the tallest bar on the vote chart. As Wauters watches NDP candidate Terry Platt’s orange bar inch upward, his phone buzzes. It’s Platt’s campaign headquarters in Gibsons –they’re congratulating him on Green Party leader Elizabeth May’s win. “When I tweeted [the

win] I called it a paradigm shift,” he says. It’s a historic night. Yes, Green support is down 361,392 votes from the 2008 election but, Wauters notes, the party was barred from the national debate. Now with May in Parliament, it gives the party a chance to prove it has something to offer voters. “What I am really, really hoping is the Green platform gets attention in the national media,” he says. Wauters' attention returns to his laptop. His eyes focus on the green bar. Wauters is hoping to retain the 8,723 votes the Green Party snagged in 2008. The next morning, after
little sleep and a flurry of early phone calls, Wauters has reviewed the numbers. Mimicking national figures, the riding’s Green numbers were down 4,126 votes. Green votes in the North Vancouver riding followed suit. In 2008, the Greens beat out the NDP by 751 votes. This year, with candidate Greg Dowman on the ballot, Greens fell to fourth place with 3,007 votes — down 2,410 ballots. Although the North Shore ridings held their incumbents, Parliament looks completely different. rime Minister Stephen Harper has the majority and has vowed to stop public funding to political parties, an
action that some people speculate may hurt the Green Party. Yet Wauters feels energized. “The moment I heard Harper speaking about that, I realized it would be his doom,” Wauters says. “He’s not going to get rid of the funding structure.” Such a move would only force other parties to cooperate during the next election, he says, noting his campaign spending was no more than $2,000. While May packs up for Ottawa, Wauters is sending out thank you emails. This campaign was tough but it hasn’t discouraged him. “I hope to see my name on the ballot in four years."

Judging by how engaged his 10-yearold daughter Mei Mei is in the political process — and how at ease she seems both in front of a crowd and in expressing her views — John might not be the only Weston running for office. “I love door knocking and talking to people,” she told The Outlook during the celebrations at her father’s campaign headquarters in Dundarave on Monday night. “I love having conversations and sharing ideas.” Then she smiles. “I’m not so good with the part where they insult you and that you can’t Mei Mei Weston may have inherited her mother’s looks but yell at them. Province sends Metro back to talk with growth plan holdout Regional district must negotiate to try to settle Coquitlam’s objections JEFF NAGEL BLACK PRESS
T
he province has rejected Metro Vancouver’s call to force a quick end to the impasse with the City of Coquitlam over the new regional growth plan that has been accepted by all other member cities. Instead of binding arbitration, Metro must follow a 60-day non-binding process to resolve the dispute with Coquitlam, starting by May 16. Regional district directors were notified of the decision from community, sport and cultural development minister Ida Chong at a Metro board meeting Friday. Metro officials had previously said they saw no chance of reaching agreement with Coquitlam on the new regional growth strategy without going to arbitration. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan, chair of the regional planning committee, said he’s deeply concerned the timelines will make the growth strategy a political football in civic elec-
tions this fall, with the risk it will be unravelled if new councils are elected in November vowing to renegotiate the accord. “I dread that possibility,” Corrigan said. “Those who have tried to obstruct the plan are succeeding - with the help of the minister.” The holdout Coquitlam council rejected the new plan as inconsistent, riddled with exemptions and vesting too much control in the hands of the regional board. Even if Coquitlam’s concerns can be dealt with during the initial 60-day period, another 60-day acceptance period then kicks in during which Metro must resubmit the revised plan to all member cities for approval. Other cities can’t reopen parts of the plan they’ve already agreed to - they can only object to amendments made as a result of negotiations with Coquitlam. The new development master plan aims to focus new construction within an urban containment boundary so the region can take in a million more people over the next three decades without sacrificing farmland and green space. It also adds mechanisms to limit the loss of industrial land and replaces the outdated Livable Region Strategic Plan. Coquitlam
Mayor Richard Stewart committed to work as fast as possible to find agreement. While some Coquitlam councillors flat-out oppose the growth strategy as a Metro power grab, Stewart said he believes changes could still satisfy a majority of his council. A key issue, he said, is that the plan fails to define the term “regionally significant” and leaves that to local cities to determine for themselves. As a result, he said, some streamside riparian areas are protected in conservation and recreation zones in some cities but not in others. Likewise, golf courses and ski hills are treated differently under the plan depending on the whim of each city, because of amendments tailored to each city to gain their agreement. The process has already consumed several years, three sets of consultations, dozens of public meetings and thousands of hours of staff time. Eighteen member municipalities agreed to adopt the plan by a March 22 deadline, as did the Tsawwassen First Nation, TransLink and the two neighbouring regional districts. Port Moody council initially rejected the regional growth strategy, but agreed April 8 to accept the plan after Metro consented to local amendments. Those changes exempt Port Moody from meeting its growth targets until the Evergreen Line and Murray-Clarke Overpass projects proceed.

PRETTY BIRDS - West Vancouver’s SPCA branch manager Dragana Hajdukovic says hi to the branch’s latest arrivals. Rebecca Aldous photo
Sunday’s SPCA open house runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weather permitting, a pet photo booth and pooch paw painting will be set up. There will also be cake, balloons and a draw for a BC SPCA package. “We will have a lot of stuff going on, Hajdukovic says. “Including tours through the shelter.

hey’ve been dubbed the Brady Bunch. But instead of eight there are seven of them — five girls and two boys. The white, blue and yellow budgies were found in a cage exposed to the elements behind Capilano Mall. “These two love each other, says Dragana Hajdukovic, West Vancouver’s SPCA branch manager. Two yellow budgies give each other kisses while hanging off the white bars of their home. The colourful birds are some of the latest intakes at the branch, which currently houses a combined count of 40 cats and dogs. “We have a transfer program from the 36 branches in B.C., Hajdukovic says, while walking over to the four rooms dedicated to cats — two for healthy cats, one for cats recovering from illness and one for sick felines. A black cat called Betsy peers out the glass sliding door. She’s from Prince George and has been in the SPCA’s system for a year. “Black cats tend to spend 15 to 20 per cent more time in shelters, Hajdukovic says, noting they have no differentiating markers to attract adopters. On Sunday, May 15, the branch is opening its
doors to residents. Not only does Hajdukovic want people to meet the Brady Bunch, Betsy and the other animals available for adoption, but she wants the public to learn about the resources the branch provides. Besides finding pets’ new homes, the branch runs boarding kennels. It also operates a foster care system, in which animals that don’t do well in groups or need space due to illness or because they have a litter, are temporarily sent to volunteers’ homes. “It also allows us to tend to way more animals than we have space for, Hajdukovic adds. Last year, more than 400 animals were adopted from the branch. So far this year, it’s found 149 pets new owners. “It is rewarding to see them find new homes, Hajdukovic says. Hajdukovic has five cats and three dogs, all of whom, due to health complications, were difficult cases to adopt.

here are no fairways, sand traps or doglegs, quite yet. Just a few oversized squeaking clubs, some coloured tennis balls and a handful of rubber tees. But if a couple of the elementary school kids participating in this year’s North Shore Public Golf Society’s introduction to golf program go on to play the sport on their own, says Dan Ellis, then it’s mission accomplished. “I was exposed to golf when I was 15 and I regret [that it wasn’t earlier.] When you’re young you have that much more of a chance to improve and grow with the sport,” says Ellis. “There’s a real attraction to this sport right now and if we can get kids enthralled by being out in nature and the challenge of competing against oneself, then they’ll be hooked for life.” Formed in 1985 to promote the need for more public golf courses on the North Shore, the public golf society played an integral role in the creation of the Northlands course, opened in 1997. A couple years after that ribbon cutting, the society turned their attention to giving North Shore youngsters a glimpse at what a round on the links is like. Although free of the frustration, anger and club throwing that might accompany a typical round with friends or clients, the program has had more than 1,000 kids — those between Grade 3 and Grade 6 — from 10 elementary schools participate. Capilano elementary school student Mackenzie Blackman, 9, told The Outlook that this wasn’t her first time swinging a club and said a love a golf runs in her family — her grandfather plays every day. “I think it’s a really good experience to learn more about golf and have fun. I like trying to get it up in the air and get a hard shot,” says Mackenzie. “And you have to use some strategy to get the ball in the net or whatever.” All of the society’s hour-long elementary school sessions are run by professionals, or assistant pros, from the Seymour Golf and Country Club or the Bowen Island Golf Club. For those looking to enroll their kids in summertime golf lessons, the Seymour course offers

Sessions run four times a week for three hours a day and are open to the public. Those between eight and 16 years of age are welcome. “The kids always have a great time. Things are changing and kids are getting introduced at a young age,’ sys Lenny Cyr, and assistant pro at Seymour Golf and Country club and one of the session instructors at Capilano elementary. “But we love reaching out to those who may not get to experience golf.” skolenko@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/seankolenko

Black Press partners with B.C. Games TRAVIS PATERSON VICTORIA NEWS
K
elly Mann hardly raised an eyebrow to the Canucks’ spectacular win of Round 1 in the playoffs this week. To be fair, no one is more passionate about sports than Mann. As far as he’s concerned, youth athletics and the surrounding community are where it’s at. The president and CEO of B.C. Games has guided the province’s Summer and Winter Games to great heights through a passion for sports. Mann was in Vernon last week to help the host city launch the official countdown for the 2012 B.C. Winter Games, set for Feb. 23-26. In tandem with the launch, Mann announced a four-year partnership between the Games and Black Press, parent company of The Outlook. “While we sponsor literally thousands of events each year, The Games, both winter and summer, are on a scale that is one of the largest opportunities to
engage our readers across B.C.,” said Candy Hodson, senior vice-president of national sales and marketing for Black Press. “In covering the B.C. Games it allows Black Press to also showcase our best: we bring together ‘local’ on a provincial scale,” she said. Mann agreed the shared focus on athletic promotion in the community between the B.C. Games and Black Press is a perfect fit. “Black Press papers and the Winter and Summer Games are in virtually every community in B.C. “Black Press will provide extensive coverage and advertising to support the B.C. Games and share the story of how the Games impact athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and communities.” The partnership will coincide with three games: the 2012 Summer Games in Surrey and the 2014 Winter and Summer Games in Mission and Nanaimo, respectively. From his downtown Victoria office, Mann overlooks the antique section of
Fort Street. It’s just a few blocks down the road from Oak Bay High, where he graduated in 1976. It was there that Mann became deeply connected to the values of youth sports, playing and managing school teams. He’s been with B.C. Games since 1992 but also co-founded the Kidsport Greater Victoria chapter in 2002, one of the most successful in the country. When president Randy Blair of Black Press’ Lower Mainland division proposed the newspaper chain become one of three corporate sponsors, Mann knew the opportunity at hand. “We want people to understand the competitive support system in athletic development in B.C.,” Mann said. “You don’t hear of Ryder Hesjedal as a B.C. Games athlete, you hear of him as a Tour de France competitor. We talk about athletes like they fell out of a tree but really they’ve had a support network since they were eight. This (partnership) will add greater depth to the role of athletes and the support network of the development stage.”

A tale of Kooch Ensemble takes to the Centennial Theatre stage to perform multiplatform concert based on classic Iranian novel and TV show SEAN KOLENKO S TA F F R E P O RT E R
I
t’s a plot line everyone can identify with: forbidden lovers from different sides of the tracks, caught in the endless tug of war of generations-long hatred and mistrust. But this version wasn’t penned by William Shakespeare, doesn’t star Leonardo DiCaprio and isn’t directed by Gus Van Sant. The Kooch Ensemble’s May 7 concert focuses on the Iranian classic “Atash Bedone Dood,” which translates to “Where there’s fire, there’s water.” Written by Iranian novelist Nader Ebrahimi, “Atash Bedone Dood” is the story the warrior Galan and Solmaz, a beauty from a rival tribe living in the Iranian desert. The novel was adapted into a popular television series in Iran in the mid-1970s. Tenor soloist Amir Haghighi and alto soloist Fereshteh Farmand will take on the role of the two lovers. Haghighi, one of the five founding members of the Kooch Ensemble, says the year-and-a-half process of turning the novel into their show was a collaborative effort that encompassed musicians, visual artists and academics. Monir Taha, who has a PhD in Iranian literature, adapted the novel into a screenplay then into poetry for the lyrical component of the performance. “We read the book over and over to carefully choose the important parts, the highlights,” says Haghighi. “But then we also sat down and talked pictures. We wanted the show to still resemble a

story book or a comic strip.” Projected throughout the concert will be more than 50 pictures created by illustrator Afshin Saboki. The brightly coloured, intricate images depict scenes and characters in the show and, says Haghighi, will give the audience a sense of seeing a movie in addition to hearing the story. Woven throughout the performance will be spoken narrative segments, done by U.S.-based storyteller Mehdi Sar-Reshdehdary. Haghighi, who was born in Tehran, remembers the impact the novel and television show had on Iranian popular culture before the country’s revolution in 1979. To have the opportunity to bring the classic back, albeit in Canada, is a chance to relive some memories and hopefully tell the story to those who never had the chance to see it. “A lot of youth have so many other things in their lives and weren’t in that world when the show was on,” says Haghighi. “Others may have seen it but don’t remember. We just want to show it and talk about something that happened in Iran.” The concert will have English subtitles for non-Farsi speakers. Tickets are $35, the show starts at 7:30 p.m. and ends 10:30 p.m. For ticket information call 604-986-4086. Her Collingwood school uniform is unwrinkled and long, dark hair curls neatly over her shoulders. “I feel like everyone knows someone with an eating disorder,” the 15-year-old says. “I know people with eating disorders.” She shifts on the leather. “I don’t want to put them into the spotlight and embarrass them,” Julia says, making it clear she wants to protect the identity of those who have confided in her. Julia is the force behind the Be Real Walk on Saturday, May 7. The event is a fundraiser for the North Shore’s eating disorder clinic, the Be Real Clinic, and meant to prompt conversation regarding the illness. “I am doing this to raise more awareness so people will know there is support out there,” Julia says. It’s an easy illness to hide, she says, referring to her experience with friends dealing with the

disorder. Of Canadian women between the ages 15 to 24, 1.5 per cent of them have had an eating disorder, says the National Eating Disorder Information Centre. It’s also a difficult subject to talk about, but one that needs more airtime, Julia says. “It is pretty scary to go up to a person and say ‘this is what is happening to you,’” she says. Julia has a younger sister. She hopes her sister will never go through what Julia has seen her friends deal with. “It would kill me if this ever happened to her,” she says. The Be Real Clinic was established six years ago. The clinic runs once every two weeks and consists of a counsellor and nutritionists. At any given time the clinic serves approximately 50 North Shore residents, says Sandra Edelman, Vancouver Coastal Health’s manager of population health and chronic disease services. The service is available for people up to 19 years old, but sees some people as young as 10 and 11 come through its doors. Outreach and awareness is an important part of the clinic’s programs. Money from Julia’s walk will go toward those services. The walk starts at 10 a.m. at the Ambleside Youth Centre. It runs until 1 p.m. and there will be a barbecue with healthy food at 11 a.m. Donation boxes will be set out and if you want to register for the walk, show up with $10 in your pocket. The event wouldn’t have been able to run without the support of Julia’s family, her school and the Ambleside Youth Centre, she says. “A lot of people have come forward and said thank you,” she says. “There’s a lot of pressure to be perfect.”
