WHEN
we first started planning The Look, the 2014 fall and winter fashion magazine, a staff member was concerned about the changes being discussed, arguing that some might not like it. My response was that the fashion industry changes styles, colors and looks every season so there shouldn’t be a problem with us making some changes. Everyone expects different looks each season. My case included the fact that in fall 2013 emerald green, winter white and navy blues were the hot colors on the runway. However in 2014 all shades of yellow, grey, vibrant blues and neutrals inspire wardrobes. The decision was made — updating the fall magazine. After several seasons of studio shots we decided to shoot on location. The right place was needed to showcase the great looking clothes. While attending an art exhibit opening reception at Fischer Galleries in the Dickie’s Building downtown, immediately I knew it would be a stunning backdrop for the shoot. Gallery owner and lifelong Northsider Marcy Fischer Nessel graciously agreed. Marcy first opened her gallery in Fondren, but recently moved to the downtown location where some of the artists she represents include William Goodman, Ken Tate, Charlie Buckley, Rod Moorhead, Stacey Johnson, Richard Kelso, Baxter Knowlton, Ron Lindsey and Billie Bourgeois. These are just a sampling. Marcy was a great host. We took over her space for two days: clothes, cameras, models, makeup and hairstylist, and our staff. Once we had our locale the next step was finding the models. Again we found the perfect ones. Local businessman Ben Chappell agreed to take time from his schedule to present men’s fashion from our area merchants. For the female, Mary Upton Shirley was selected. Mary Upton, a student and cheerleader at Madison Central High School, is represented by JEA Model Management. Mary Upton was used to modeling. However it was all new to Ben, who is owner and principal of Interior Elements, a contract furniture dealership based in Ridgeland. Right away we knew we had it right. We turned to Nathans Salon in Ridgeland for help with hair and makeup. Tracy Branch generously donated her talents, arriving early at the gallery ready to transform Mary Upton’s hair and makeup repeatedly. Tracy has been in the beauty industry for three years, two of those at Nathans. Lonnie Kees was ready to photograph everything for the editorial section and Christina Cannon Boteler, Chris Grillis and David Johnston were in charge of the advertising section. Jackson’s fortunate to be the home of four of the top photographers in the South. Years ago (more than 20) Chris and Lonnie shot the first fashion for us. They have not missed one since. They’ve patiently worked with me, hours of rain during outdoor shoots, babies and children who had rather be doing something else, reshoots and much more. Then the ad department, under the direction of Ad Manager Holly Dean, contacted local stores and asked if they would provide clothes and accessories. When they were delivered to Fischer’s the selections reflected the season’s bold new silhouettes and colors plus timeless traditional styles. The jewelry was a mix between time-honored pieces, local designs and contemporary works, all beautiful. After two days of shooting on location it was time for Chris, Christina and David to use their talents for the ads. Their work is always beautiful, with perfect lighting. But most of all creative. When the cameras were put up and the fashion returned, it was time for Art Director Wanda McCain to bring everything together in a captivating and ‘stylish’ publication. She did. During the birthing of this publication we learned a lot. We now know what’s hot for the season, what colors to wear, what to wear to the football games, debutante parties and school. We learned again why Lonnie Kees, Chris Grillis, Christine Cannon Boteler and David Johnston are the best photographers. We learned that they can be very patient with us. We learned there are some great models in town. And we learned that we don’t have to go to New York, Dallas, Atlanta, New Orleans or anywhere to buy the latest fashions: our local merchants have it all. Jimmye Sweat 8

HOLLY DEAN, ad director, oversaw the ad staff as they sold and designed the ads. But her job didn’t stop there. She helped coordinate the staging and made sure everything ran smoothly.
CONTRIBUTORS WANDA MCCAIN, art director, had the daunting task of bringing everything together to present the clothes and accessories in a beautiful way.
CARLY O’BRYANT played several roles in the production. As a member of the ad staff she worked with her clients in being represented. She was the cover model plus she assisted at the shoot. MARCY FISCHER NESSEL was hostess extraordinaire offering full access of her wonderful art gallery.
