Dennis Nona expresses Torres Strait Island culture through large-scale linocuts. His imagery shows a Melanesian influence through the symbols of sea creatures, masks and designs. These are suggestive of coastal Papuan art used on trading items such as drums with traditional carved patterns. The stories represented in the linocuts are based on the rich narrative legends of the Torres Strait Islander people. Dennis was taught the traditional craft of wood-carving. This, along with his cultural heritage, learnt through story telling and ceremonies, helped him develop his linocut skills. His linocuts feature an intricate decorative style that is often finished with delicate colour applied by hand called 'kaidaral'.
