NAMED A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE IN 2000, THE TOWN IS FULL OF HISTORICAL HOMES, FASCINATING STREET NAMES WITH THEIR OWN STORIES TO TELL, AND HISTORICAL RE-ENACTMENTS.

The site of the first Bermuda settlement in 1609, following the wreck of the Sea Venture on the island’s treacherous shores, and its first capital before the City of Hamilton took that fame a couple hundred years later in 1815, the Town of St. George and surrounding parish continue to be one of the most dynamic landmarks to visit on the island.

Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, the town is full of historical homes, fascinating street names with their own stories to tell, and historical re-enactments,

plus beaches and walking trails through the island’s environs.

King’s Square is the centre of activity for this vibrant town, including the municipal seat of Town Hall and the location of yearly events such as the Peppercorn Ceremony. If you’d like a perfect photo op, check out the macabre stocks and pillory, once used as a form of punishment, or head along to Ordnance Island for the perfect vantage point to snap the to-and-fro-ing of sailboats, yachts, and ships in St. George’s Harbour.

Along Water and Duke of York Streets and the winding, narrow lanes that feed off them, you’ll find historic homes and buildings, many managed by the

Bermuda National Trust and open for tours, including Tucker House Museum located at 5 Water Street. Visit the Globe Museum on the northwest corner of King’s Square, which is also the site of the Trustworthy Gift Shop, featuring special Bermuda-inspired gifts.

Just across from the Globe Museum is the gem in the town’s crown: St. Peter’s Their Majesties Chappell, the oldest Anglican Church in continuous use in the New World. The inside of the church holds a magnificent testament to the island’s history and culture, in particular, highlights on the influence and contributions of Bermuda’s African connection through the African Diaspora Heritage Trail, and the stark reality of Bermuda’s troubled past punctuated by the segregated graveyard.

If you’re visiting during the winter months, the streets and parks of the town are aglow with lights and events such as the National Trust Walkabout, which takes place the first Friday in December. Many of the historic homes open for tours and festivities.

HISTORY COMES TO LIFE

Wind your way through any of the curiously named streets in this town — including Shinbone Alley, Aunt Peggy’s Lane, and Blockade Alley — and you’ll see some of Bermuda’s finest, and perhaps oldest, architecture. This is a living town, so many of these historical homes are inhabited and aren’t accessible, but many examples of Bermuda architecture can be viewed from the streets. Houses that are open to the public include the centuries-old Mitchell House, which currently houses the St. George’s Historical Society Museum, Printery, and Garden, and Stewart Hall, an 18th-century home that now houses The Lili Bermuda Perfumery.

Overlooking the town just off Duke of Kent Street sits the other imposing church in this town — except this one was never finished. The soaring stone archways of this Gothic revival known as the Unfinished Church are a spellbinding sight to behold, and the church has been the enchanting backdrop for many weddings.

Within St. George’s Parish are several naval forts, most notably Fort St. Catherine’s on the very northern edge of the island. Along with spooky winding tunnels and a fascinating array of antique weaponry, ramparts offer views stretching out along the island’s North Shore and beyond.

LIVING IT UP

Being right on the water has its advantages, and exploring the many islands and inlets that make up St. George’s Harbour is a great way to spend the day. Rental boats and pontoons or kayaks and paddleboards can be rented, or book a tour on a Jet Ski or a boat with a licensed captain to get the inside scoop on hidden gems and local favourites.

St. George’s is also home to spectacular beaches and walking trails. A trip east to Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve in St. David’s is essential. Seek out several of the island’s most idyllic beaches after you’ve beaten the trails

through forest and salt marsh, or get up high to view Bermuda’s stunning coastline from the Wildlife Observation Tower.

You can also rent an electric Pedego bike near the St. George’s ferry stop at Penno’s Drive and explore the East End at your own pace; or join a tour and get an inside look into the history of the Town of St. George, go off-roading along the Ferry Reach Railway Trail, or discover all that St. David’s and Cooper’s Island have to offer.

Just a few steps away from St. Peter’s church is the Visitor Services Centre at 25 York Street, a good place to start planning your East End adventures. Chat with the helpful staff, who can provide insider knowledge about the town and assist in booking your local tours. Scan the QR code on the poster found inside the Visitor Services Centre to download the new Visit Bermuda app or view the digital Town of St. George Guide, as well as the Maps of Bermuda guide, to help you navigate the area, buy bus and ferry tickets and passes, and purchase Bermuda-branded merchandise.

FOODIE FAVOURITES

One of St. George’s reputations is its slow pace, and that lends itself well to kicking back and relaxing at one of the several harbourside restaurants. This is the place to try local seafood, with the fresh catch likely landed not far from the restaurants’ front doors and prepared in a variety of ways — from the iconic wahoo sandwich on freshly baked raisin bread to pan fried and served with peas and rice. Along with the fresh seafood, there’s an excellent selection of quick bites, including some of the best Chinese food outside of Chinatown, sandwich shops with delicious fresh ingredients, and refreshing smoothies, fresh-brewed coffee, and sweet pick-me-up treats. For special occasions, take a five-minute drive out to The St. Regis Bermuda Resort for a scrumptious meal at BLT Steak NY or Lina, or sip a cocktail at The St. Regis Bar, all offering breathtaking views over Gates Bay and the imposing Fort St. Catherine.

If you’d prefer to stay in, you can have delicious meals from St. George’s restaurants delivered right to your door. Just visit the Hook food delivery service website at www.hook.bm or download the Hook app to select a restaurant and place your order.

TREASURE TROVE

Once you’ve fuelled up, stop in some of the town’s unique shops. Though you can also find some branches of Bermuda department stores and souvenir shops here (including grabbing a pair of famous Bermuda shorts), St. George’s retailers offer creative goods with shops filled with local artists, handmade sea glass jewellery, bohemian-inspired apparel and beauty products, and gifts from the U.K. and Europe. This is also the spot to test out and purchase your favourite Bermuda-scent inspired perfumes from The Lili Bermuda Perfumery.

THE HISTORY OF BERMUDA’S SEA GLASS

TAKE HOME A PRECIOUS KEEPSAKE BY ONE OF THE ISLAND’S LOCAL ARTISTS.

EXPLORING BERMUDA’S pink-sand beaches for washed-up treasure is a pleasurable pastime, and, along with softly muted shells and little creatures living amongst the sargassum seaweed, beachcombers wandering the beaches of Bermuda can also expect to find well-worn pieces of glass in pastels of green, turquoise, and blue.

12 VISIT BERMUDA TOWN OF ST. GEORGE

Although most of the glass comes from human sources, some of the pieces of sea glass that have ended up on Bermuda’s shores are remnants of the island’s nautical history, including the island’s bleak past as the site of many shipwrecks. These ships are likely to have held cases of liquor, medicine bottles, and decorative glass, which were tossed into the sea in some capacity and tumbled along the island’s rocky coastline only to be cast along the shore as nature’s gems. These once-jagged pieces emerge in random shapes and all variety of sizes, including pieces of bottles and jars.

“A lot the sea glass that we find on Bermuda’s beaches comes from shipwrecks and locals throwing bottles overboard for the past 400 years,” explains Kelly Diel, who works these undersea marvels into beautiful wearable pieces of jewellery at her shop, Seaglass Studio, just off Water Street in St. George’s. The artist enhances each found treasure with beads and silver wire to create pieces where no two are alike.

“Bermudian crafters have used sea glass to enhance picture frames, mobiles, and suncatchers since the

1960s; and for the past 25 years, sea glass has been professionally made into jewellery,” she says.

The rarest colours of sea glass to be found on Bermuda’s shores are yellow, orange, red, and turquoise, she adds.

Visitors should note, however, that it is important to leave these natural jewels in their habitats along beaches and coastlines. Bermuda’s beaches and nature reserves are protected by law, which prohibits taking any coral, sand, rocks, or sea glass.

“Tourists should follow the same rules as the pink sand, shells, and corals,” says Diel. “Please don’t take anything off the beaches, as the airport and cruise ships will confiscate these items.”

Those mesmerised by the beautiful precious glass can take a piece home, crafted by one of the island’s local artists, to treasure in a truly Bermudian style.

Pop in to meet Diel at her Seaglass Studio or visit Kelli Thompson at Saltwater Jewellery Designs, both located in St. George’s; they will both be happy to create a unique jewellery piece just for you.

ST. GEORGE’S SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

FOR A TRUE TASTE OF BERMUDA, DON’T MISS THIS CULINARY CELEBRATION.

IN SEPTEMBER, Bermuda’s celebrated seafood is highlighted at a festival set amongst the island’s historical gems in the Town of St. George. The island has a vibrant fisheries industry and a voracious appetite for fresh catch that is a huge draw for both locals and visitors. Fish caught in local waters include wahoo, tuna, rockfish, bonita, amberjack, and red hind, as well as native Guinea chicks and Bermuda’s spiny lobster, which is seasonal from September 1 to March 31 and is one of the island’s most coveted meals.

The St. George’s Seafood Festival, which hosted its inaugural event in 2022, turns the spotlight onto Bermuda’s seafood and the island’s talented chefs delivering the freshest and delicious cuisine, whether spiced in a taco, baked up in a pie, stacked on freshly baked raisin bread, or deep fried to crunchy perfection and perfectly seasoned. During the 2022 event, the best of the best seafood chefs included St. David’s Seafood, Munchies by the Sea, Sensational Delights, and MP Chefs.

The festival takes place on Ordnance Island with

St. George’s Harbour as a backdrop and, along with highlighting over a dozen vendors, also features live entertainment from local singers, DJs, and bands, to add a dose of island flavour to the festivities.

Although seafood is the star of the show at the festival, visitors will also be able to sample other Bermudian fare,

savour a sweet treat, or pair their Bermuda fish sandwich with a signature Dark ’n Stormy or Rum Swizzle — Bermuda’s not-to-be-missed alcohol-infused beverages.

Entry is free to the event, but VIP ticket access and food flights can also be purchased to help make choosing from the delectable selection of food a little easier. The event will also feature a fun park to keep kids entertained with bouncy castles, miniature golf, and mini go-carts.

The St. George’s Seafood Festival takes place on September 17, 2023.
