ear Palm Beach Day Academy Community Members,
As you read this Annual Report, we hope you have the same sense of pride in being part of the PBDA community that we do. The School Year 2011-2012 was one of great accomplishments on behalf of our students, teachers, parents, and community volunteers. Just a few highlights of our students’ accomplishments are:
• Our graduates, as always, will be attending the secondary schools of their choice both locally and at the top New England Boarding Schools. • Our Math Counts Team placed third in the County and one of our students placed in the top quarter of the State of Florida. • Our School was granted the Green School of Excellence Award. • Twelve of our students qualified for the Duke Tip Program for Gifted Students and 54% percent qualified for Johns Hopkins program for Gifted Students. • Twenty-three of our students were inducted into the National Honor Society. •Three of our students qualified to participant in the Florida State Chorus and eight of our vocal students qualified to perform in the Spotlight on Young Musicians at the Kravis Theater. Just a few highlights of our teachers’ accomplishments are: • Due to the generosity of Sue and James Patterson, twelve of our teachers are pursuing a Masters Degree taught here at Palm Bach Day Academy through FAU. Once these teachers have completed the program, 83% of our classroom teachers will have graduate degrees. • Three of our teachers, Barbara Close, Cynthia Kanai, and Rochelle Wolberg, were named Finalists in the Dwyer Award for Teaching Excellence and Cynthia Kanai received the Dwyer Award for Teaching Excellence. This is the highest teaching honor in Palm Beach County. As part of the culture of Palm Beach Day Academy, we continue to look to the future and how we might enhance what we do for our students. Thanks to many dedicated staff members and parent volunteers, we are well on our way to provide our students and faculty with facilities that enhance the teaching and learning processes. Strides toward the vision for the future are:
• We have raised half of our $14,000,000 Great Expectations Campaign. • The renovation of Matthews Performing Arts Center has begun. • A concept plan has been developed for the Lower Campus and we have begun the implementation of outdoor learning environments that stimulate the development of our students through self-discovery, natural exploration, and by cultivating the imagination of our students. All of this has been focused on providing our students with the best possible preparation for the future and a school experience that they remember with great pride. Our graduates are heading off secure in the knowledge that they have competed a very challenging academic program and are well prepared. We are proud to be part of Palm Beach Day Academy and thank you for the many ways in which you as parents contribute to everything we’re able to do for our students. haritable giving allows Palm Beach Day Academy to continue to provide quality programs and teachers, maintain facilities and grounds, obtain new technology, and supplement our enrichment programs. Voluntary gifts also provide financial assistance to qualified students. Our fundraising success cannot be accomplished without the strong leadership of parent volunteers. In this report, you will find our audited figures for the 2011-2012 school year.
Annual Fund
Under the leadership of Karyn and Kevin Lamb and Nancy and Joe Sambuco, contributions were received from trustees, current parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, foundations, administrators, teachers, staff, and friends. 100% of our school faculty and 82% of our parents supported the fund.
Fundraising Events The 16th Annual Walter H. Butler Golf Classic, chaired by Matthew Smith and Joel Kassewitz, raised $78,000. Major sponsors were Marc and Claudia Player, the Stanley and Arna Smith Foundation, Shoes for Crews, Credit Suisse Securities, The Seaport Group, Joel and Darcie Kassewitz, and The Breakers. Participating in the tournament were parents, alumni, students, teachers, trustees, parents of alumni, and friends. The Feather Ball Dinner and Auction, chaired by Gita Costa, Carrie Murray, Nancy Sambuco and Missy Savage, bought our school families and friends together for an evening of dining and dancing. The event netted $662,000, of which $149,000 was raised from Corporate Sponsorships.
Leadership Gifts / Financial Aid
The William H. Pitt Foundation is strongly committed to supporting the school’s financial aid program. Ms. Pauline Pitt, Director and Chairman of the Grants Committee, and Mr. Robert Simses, President of the Pitt Foundation, continue to recognize the need to provide qualified students and families access to a PBDA education. Due to a shift in the economy during 2010, like all independent schools, PBDA faced an increased need for Financial Aid. Through generous support from the William H. Pitt Foundation and many others, the school was able meet the needs of families who, otherwise, would not have had the opportunity to attend PBDA.
Auxiliary Programs
These programs include fees for services such as the lunch and bus programs, as well for after school enrichment, aftercare, book fair, yearbook and field trips. As we plan for the coming months and into the future we must rely on financial stability, good financial management, a strong enrollment, a dedicated Board of Trustees, and a high level of financial giving on the part of those associated with the school. We thank everyone for continuing to support Palm Beach Day Academy.
