A new year has arrived and it’s time to gain some much-needed momentum for ordinary and even extraordinary tasks! Time to wax the floor, clean the desk, reorganize files, clear out the old and bring in the new! Time to eat more blueberries, walk the dog (no matter how cold it is) and remember to share something beautiful with those you love. With our double theme of Education & Health for this month’s issue, along with my avid interests in parenting and the study of emotional patterns we hold, lately I've been contemplating the topic of complaining. I have to admit I have been doing my own fair share! We all do it when we’re too tired, too full, too hungry, too hot, too old, too whatever … or especially when we are feeling unheard by our family, and especially our mate. Hearing our children complain can sometimes even make our skin crawl. Recently, while listening to my neighbor’s child complain, a little light bulb went off in my head, and I just had to stop and analyze the situation. I realized that we learn from a young age that complaining does usually get us attention, either positive OR negative. As adults, we

continue our desire to be understood … and complaining often makes us feel like someone will sympathize with us and validate our position no matter what our age. We can form life-long habits of this pattern (without realizing we are doing so) in our primal attempts to be understood. In truth, complaining typically brings about the opposite of what we are looking for. It’s too bad a buzzer and flashing lights don’t go off when we fall into this negative loop, alerting us to change the way we phrase things! That might motivate us into a healthier action zone, with big bold letters proclaiming: “I’m opting for personal responsibility!” Be well and enjoy learning,

Visionary & Educational Architect “When people live in a culture that has forgotten its relationship to mystery, a number of things go away.” - Christina Baldwin

loria Cooper is an educator, project designer, and the “story lady” at Mt. Shasta Library. She brings the message of Christina Baldwin’s quote (above) to her work and relationships. “We need to wake up,” Gloria says. “There is a bigger part of us individually and as a society.” Her work revolves around assisting people to recognize that bigger, more authentic part of themselves, so in turn people can help society evolve to a higher degree of unity – one that connects us to life’s mystery. While Gloria brings her wisdom and knowledge to everyone she encounters, her deepest passion is in working with youth. “Her commitment to the well-being of youth is inspirational,” says Lori Crockett, Mt. Shasta Library employee. Gloria’s work with youth began when she was 14 and teaching piano lessons in Philadelphia where she was raised. After graduating from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in education/humanities, she and her

husband Ron, who worked as a mathematician on the NASA moon program, moved to Washington, DC where Gloria began teaching elementary school. After three years, they moved to Berkeley, CA where she taught in the Berkeley school system. Through her teaching, independent research, and a research project with the Ford Foundation, Gloria became aware of the number of middle school youth who felt disenfranchised and were even committing suicide. “As human beings, our nature is to bond,” says Gloria. “These children had insufficient bonding with their parents or with society. When a segment of society doesn’t have opportunity to bond, they are at risk.” In 1981, Gloria and Ron started New Age Academy, a private school in Berkeley. The school provided a way to empower youth, giving them an opportunity to bond, and giving Gloria an opportunity to continue her research. One of her goals was to discover why children opted out of life emotionally, intellectually, and physically through suicide. What she discovered was that they were malnourished on emotional and physical levels. New Age Academy was designed to serve the whole child. The school’s interior offered a relaxing environment reflecting nature, and provided intellectual stimulation through its academic program as well as emotional support through its teaching methods. A well-equipped kitchen allowed Ron, who served as the academy’s chef, to offer students nutritious meals. In this holistic environment, children thrived. “The purpose of our school was to help children transition from childhood to adulthood,” says Gloria. “Everyone needs a society behind them to support them.” She and Ron provided a segment of that society. The thread of Gloria’s life that had guided her from educator to educator/researcher next led her, in 2007, to Mt. Shasta and to envisioning and designing the Sophia Project, a virtual project she and Ron continue to work on together.

The project emerged from a message received from the children at New Age Academy: “We’re okay, you need to talk to the adults.” The Sophia Project plan contains elements needed to enhance the community’s ability to nourish the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual potential in youth so they can thrive in the 21st century. It is designed to provide and foster the principles and attributes necessary for optimal growth. A continuing step in Gloria's work has been volunteering with “Songs and Stories for Young People” events at the Mt. Shasta community library on Wednesday mornings. As well as telling traditional stories, Gloria uses sacred geometry (a term used by archaeologists, anthropologists and geometricians) in her interactions with the children and parents. She explains, “Sacred geometry is the language of the universe. I believe it is important to share this language with children as early as possible. The circle, the triangle and the square are included in the traditional stories and fairy tales I choose for story time.” “Gloria is a visionary,” says Crockett. “She sees potential everywhere and brings her wealth of wisdom, knowledge and compassion to everything she does.” Gloria’s vision is to create change in the world by assisting people to change themselves. “I want to inspire people to pursue their sacred relationship to themselves, each other, and the natural environment,” she says. “We must remember that our children are the evolutionary forefront of who we are becoming.” To contact Gloria Cooper, call (530) 926-9830. e all have moods. In childhood, there are those unicorn, rainbow, cotton candy and smiley ones. Then there are those beastly ones, such as meltdown mahem at Macy’s, bedtime blowups, and tantrums over tuna. Adolescents are also famous for occasionally getting their knickers in a twist… Behind every spirited child in distress is a parent secretly wishing to be sedated. Okay, the last statement may just be me, but sometimes the moods of our children shift so swiftly and fiercely from cheer to rage that we’re left dazed and confused.

Let’s explore some common “bad mood” triggers, and tips for how to avoid them.

Why Terrible Horrible Moods Happen to Good Children • Changes in routine. All parents get this intellectually, yet still we are caught off guard when our kids react to change with distress. “But you said we’d get ice cream right after school!” (Can you feel the power of those words like nails on a chalkboard?) WE think they must learn to go with the flow. THEY want predictable outcomes.

• Overstimulation. Too much of a good thing can be lovely … and it can be bad. Real bad. Noise, interference and stimulation in a child’s surroundings can cause increased irritability. And unfortunately, children often don’t realize it’s the ENVIRONMENT making them edgy and grumpy. • Exhaustion. Hello? Sleep deprivation makes children of all ages emotionally weird and less resilient. Teens especially must get enough shut-eye! • Tummies growlin’. The tricky part about cranky, hungry kids? They can be extremely resistant to acknowledg8 ing their hunger. You have to do the thinking for

Bust A Mood – Strategies To Calm A Child’s Beastly Frame Of Mind them, and be armed with snacks - especially when away from home. • Growing pains. Yep, blame it on hormones. Physical and neurological growth can cause children to be moody. Let’s keep reminding each other about this one, deal? • Injustice. “Hey! Sophie got a bigger slice!” Even if Sophie didn’t get a more sizeable helping, your child’s perception that she did can trigger a nasty mood. How to Bust a Mood Look to children’s literature. Sharing a book is one way to connect with kids in a discussion about moods. • Remember little Alexander from Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst? Poor guy can’t even get away from his bad day when he settles down for the night. He bites his tongue, and the cat deserts him! But there is someone there to bust his mood. Fortunately he has a parent who reassures him that everyone has bad days. • Another book that combines a silly sense of humor with grouchy feelings is Big Rabbit’s Bad Mood by Ramona Badescu. The story shows that laughter is good medicine for monstrous bad moods. Listen to the experts and their advice. Rick and Jan Hanson, authors of Mother Nurture, have excellent tips for easing sour moods: • One-on-one attention. Make sure your moody child is getting plenty of nurturance in the form of quality

attention for at least 20 minutes daily (ideally, more time than that). • Soak up the sunshine. Children need to build up a positive emotional memory so they can access those happy places internally when life isn’t going smoothly. Dr. Hanson suggests spending a few minutes at bedtime reviewing with your child all the things that make him feel good, and reminding him to savor those things. • Watch out for stress. Some moody kids have a hard time coping with stressors such as long days of childcare, overscheduling, and too-high expectations. While we can’t eliminate stress for kids, be a good model of coping. Reassure your child he doesn’t need to worry, and teach him strategies to calm himself. • Seek out objectivity. Frequently it helps to ask a teacher, family friend or counselor for an opinion about your child’s moods – is there a bully at school? Is it possible you are missing something? • Assess their diet. Think about whether your child is eating enough protein or too much sugar. Make sure he is offered nutritious meals, consider vitamins, and watch for symptoms of food allergies. • Take care of yourself. Don’t forget about your own needs for nurturance. Moody kids can add up to lots of stress in the home, so be sure to take good care of your own emotional well-being and your relationships.

Do not underestimate the power of rest. Bad moods hate a restful slumber. Are you getting enough rest to cope with a moody child? Do everything in your power to promote better sleep habits for you and your family – you need your energy and stamina for those terrible, no good days, and so does your child – sleep deprivation can adversely affect everyone’s mood. Ask your pediatrician or check out the National Sleep Foundation’s website to learn how many hours of sleep are recommended for your child’s various stages of development. For example, toddlers ages 1 to 3 need 12 to 14 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, and preschoolers ages 3 to 5 need 11 to 13 hours. School-aged youth ages 5 to 10 need 10 to 11 hours, and during puberty and adolescence, getting about 9 hours of nightly sleep is recommended as essential. Sleep tips for families: • Emphasize need for a consistent sleep schedule and bedtime routine. • Make child’s bedroom conducive to sleep – dark, cool and quiet. • Keep TV and computers out of the bedroom. • Avoid caffeine at night: coffee, black tea, sodas and chocolate. or most of the 20 years we’ve been together, hubby and I have been parents. One reason I think we’ve made it this far is that rich or poor, we’ve made it a priority to go out occasionally for dinner or drinks without the kids. I’m lucky to work a day job with a steady pool of college students available as sitters, plus the grandparents live nearby. Both I and my husband have holiday birthdays that also coincide with two of the biggest date nights of the year: New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day. These evenings have definitely required a strategy for procuring sitters and venues … here’s my sage advice: Since Cupid is lurking around the corner, schedule your sitter now (and have a backup). Recruit a trusted teen that is not yet dating (a sitter with his or her own transportation is a bonus). It helps to sweeten the deal with an extra hourly buck or two for “holiday pay.”

he history of school nursing reflects changes as vast as those in any other medical profession. It began with a single focus: keeping children in school. Today, nurses are responsible for more tasks than one can count on 10 fingers.

School nursing began in 1902, when public health nurse and reformer Lillian Wald persuaded the New York City Board of Health to hire her to keep children in school. At the time, epidemics were prevalent, especially in the poor areas of large cities. New York City faced a par-

shift from a model of treating disease within schools, to health education and the prevention of illnesses. During that same era, new health and welfare programs emerged. The school nurse’s role expanded, and she recruited assistance from others in the educational system, as well as parents. Even students became involved in their own welfare. The 1970s brought further changes, including an extension of services to combat increases of drug-abuse related disorders, teenage pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. The 1975 passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act required that all children with physical and mental disabilities have access to free and appropriate education in the least restrictive educational setting. As schools be-

gan complying with the mandate, school nurses’ duties increased to an almost overwhelming degree. A school nurse today holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a state school nursing credential. She may have a master’s degree and be licensed as a public health nurse. She has children on her caseload whose needs range from mild conditions to serious physical, mental and social/emotional disorders. Regardless of severity, documentation on interventions with each child are kept and reported to show compliance at meeting each child’s needs. District and county school budget cuts have translated into fewer health services, while school nurse caseloads along with the number of schools she serves has increased.

Teresa Evans, school nurse for Butte County Office of Education, works in nine schools, providing for special education students from preschool through age 22. Her caseload includes children with severe intellectual, physical and/or emotional challenges, as well as those with severe medical conditions. She serves children in the district’s autism program and its deaf and hard-of-hearing program. Kara Jones, school nurse for the North State Charter Joint Partnership Agreement (JPA), works with charter schools in the Redding area serving differently abled children mainstreamed into regular school classrooms. While some of her students don’t exhibit severe special needs,

others do. Her caseload includes children with cerebral palsy, seizures, diabetes, vision and hearing losses, and serious allergies. As part of their jobs, these two nurses conduct vision, hearing and dental screenings. They talk to parents about their findings and provide parent education. They write health protocols for teachers and administrators to follow, as well as provide staff trainings on how to handle health issues, and how to use and manage health equipment such as the EpiPen (for students allergic to bee stings), wheel chairs, and appara12

grams (IEPs) for special education or special needs students, and serve as advisors on IEP and Student Study Teams. Both Evans and Jones

coordinate and problem-solve with other county nurses, and serve as liaisons between the school and community health professionals. Your head may be swimming with the number of tasks a school nurse is required to perform beyond taking care of student injuries or illnesses during the day. Yet most of them carry out the functions of their jobs with grace and patience. “I like the diversity of my job,” says Jones. “I enjoy going from school to school and interfacing with both adults and children. I’m always learning new information.” Evans likes the power of teamwork. “It takes a team working together to help the children and families. It is gratifying when we can see the growth of our students as a result of our teamwork and parent involvement.” What are some challenges that school nurses face? Evans says, “Many of the parents I work with live below the

poverty line. Often they don’t have the resources to take care of their own physical and emotional needs, so they can’t be as attentive to the needs of their children.” Jones says, “We have a huge volume of students with serious health needs entering our mainstream classrooms. Teachers feel apprehensive about how to serve them, and nurses often feel they cannot adequately meet the needs of all the children and staff as well as they would like.” When a kindergarten child was asked what her school nurse does, she replied, “She looks at your eyes, ears, mouth and nose.” Many adults also think this is a school nurse’s role. Unless their child has a special health need, most people are unaware of the major responsibility a school nurse has in the school system today. Healthy Teeth, Bright Smiles Local Dentists Share Bite-Sized Tips Smile! February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and we’ve checked with local dentists for tips on helping children go the distance with this year’s “gold medal smile” theme.

Get an Early Start

"Baby teeth" play an important role in life-long dental health and are at risk for decay as soon as they first appear, so start your infant off with good oral care. “The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth erupts and no later than 1 year of age. This establishes a 'dental home' for the child where the caregivers will receive advice and guidance on the oral health of their child, in addition to the availability of their pediatric dentist in case of any trauma,” says Erik Roos, DDS, of Chico Pediatric Dentistry.

Accentuate the Positive

Think of visiting the dentist as a positive experience – this goes a long way in helping your child feel as comfortable as possible during visits. Try to schedule appointments for a time of day you know your child is typically rested, such as early mornings. Talk with your child about the dentist ahead of time; find children’s storybooks on the topic to read together. Keep yourself upbeat despite personal anxieties or concerns - children are astute at picking up on emotions.

Diet and Dental

“Foods that are damaging to teeth are foods that contain sugars and acids, especially if they remain on the teeth for prolonged periods of time. Energy drinks have been found to be very detrimental to teeth - ten times worse than soda. However, the primary factor in maintaining good dental health is, and always will be, good dental hygiene – brushing and flossing after meals and snacks,” shares Kim Centeno, DDS, of Mt. Shasta.

Lend a Hand

Michelle Borg, DDS, of Chico advises that, “Parents need to brush and floss their child's teeth until the child has developed the necessary skills.” The American Dental Association recommends that until you’re comfortable that your child can brush on his or her own effectively, continue to brush your child's teeth twice a day.

What about that toothbrush?

“The best toothbrush to use is a soft bristle, small-head toothbrush where one can easily reach the back molar area and brush each surface of those teeth effectively. Parents are encouraged to check their child's toothbrush often and replace it when it is worn, which can take place anywhere between two to three months. Bent and frayed bristles will not remove plaque effectively,” explains Dr. Borg.

Floss is Boss

Wondering about making flossing part of your child’s dental care routine? “Flossing should begin as soon as any teeth start touching each other,” advises Dr. Roos. “This begins usually with the upper front teeth, although every child’s dental development is different. Ideally, flossing should occur every day and preferably at night.” Dr. Borg adds, “Flossing is important to prevent cavities from developing between teeth. Flossing aids such as one-time-use disposable flossers can be used at first, and then as the child's skills develop, regular floss can be utilized,”

What to Do When Your Child Cheats

hink back to third grade. It’s spelling-test day, and the word is “money.” Would that be “m-on-i-e”? Maybe, if you just peeked a bit over your friend’s shoulder and took a look . . . he’s writing the word now … there it is! “Monny!” OK, you never copied someone else’s paper. But maybe your best buddy slipped you a note during history class with the date of the Spanish-American War (1898) or the Battle of Gettysburg (1863). The truth is, just about everyone, at some point in their academic life, has cheated, according to psychologist and author Kenneth Shore, Ph.D. Most of us never become career criminals, a point that’s helpful to keep in mind should you discover your elementary- or middle-school-age child has

been cheating in school. “It’s not uncommon for grade-school kids to engage in cheating, even though we think of this as something older kids might do,” says Shore, whose books include Special Kids Problem Solver and Elementary Teacher’s Discipline Problem Solver. “They may not be very crafty about it and do things that are patently obvious to the teacher,” he says … eye-catching things like copying someone’s essay word for word, or asking another student – in an audible whisper – for an answer during a quiz. It’s not just that younger kids are naïve and unseasoned when it comes to cheating. “Some of them don’t totally understand that it’s dishonest, or why it is,” says Terra Holmgren, an elementary school counselor. In middle school, kids get savvy. Cheating becomes

more calculated when students have technology on their side, according to Wendy Lawrence, former middle school head in Washington. “A kid doesn’t need to pass a note or look over a shoulder when cell phones are available. A master texter, as most kids today are, can easily text without taking his phone out of his pocket,” says Lawrence. By high school, cheating is widespread and on the rise, according to a 2008 study “The Ethics of American Youth,” conducted by the Josephson Institute of Ethics, a partnership of educational and youth organizations. Out of the 30,000 United States high school students surveyed, 64 percent had cheated on a test during the year, up from 60 percent in 2006. What’s more, 36 percent reported they’d used the 15 Internet to plagiarize.

What to Do When Your Child Cheats Take It Seriously

Parents and teachers should take elementary school cheating seriously, even if the kids are cheating in unsophisticated ways, and even if “everyone” is doing it. “It’s important that a pattern doesn’t develop, and that kids don’t rely on cheating as a coping mechanism,” says Holmgren. “It’s good to catch this early.” It’s also good to view grade school cheating as a “teachable moment.” “It’s a chance to talk to your children about right and wrong,” suggests Holmgren: “What do they think about cheating? Why is it wrong? Why do kids do it?” Why do kids cheat? Holmgren says it’s because they fear falling behind: “Some feel overwhelmed or pressured to do well. Others have learning problems that make it harder for them to keep up.” Parents should take a close look at the way they interact with their kids, suggests Shore. “It’s possible the pressure their child feels is coming from them.” Elementary school teachers use a variety of methods to discourage cheating. Some instruct students to move their desks farther apart when taking tests; others ask students to cover their papers as they work. Many teachers make cheating a learning topic and discuss ethical issues, such as the value of earning a grade honestly.

How to Handle Cheating

Let’s say you and your 10-year-old daughter are playing a board game at home and you notice her taking some, well, liberties with the rules. That might be a good time to talk about values such as honesty, fairness and responsibility – what they mean and why they’re important. But let’s say that, even after the well-intended talks, your daughter turns in a book report that is really good. So good, in fact, that her teacher thinks she recalls seeing something a lot like it on the Barnes & Noble website. What does the teacher do? Typically, when a teacher suspects a student has been cheating, he or she deals with it at school. “Cheating, like most mistakes, isn’t a black-and-white issue,” says Lawrence. “Consequences at the middle-school level range from being asked to redo a paper, to earning a zero, to being suspended from school.” If your young child or middle schooler is caught cheating, should you dole out an additional punishment at home? Probably not, says Shore. “Parents don’t need to add another penalty layer.” So stay cool. Don’t ignore the issue, but try not to overreact. “Don’t assume the child is on the verge of some major psychological problem,” suggests Shore. Let your child know you’re disappointed, but follow that up with a calm, measured discussion, which includes

questions like this: “Would you feel better getting a good grade because you earned it, or because you copied someone’s paper?” “How would you feel if you found out that (name a hero or role model) had cheated?” At the middle school level, parents should look for the reasons behind the cheating, says Lawrence. Was this a one-time adolescent mistake or a call for help from a stressed-out kid? “Showing your child that you support the school’s consequences but also truly care how she is doing will send a clear message that the cheating was wrong and that you are invested in helping her move past it,” Lawrence says. “Learning why your child cheated should give you some tools to help, whether that means trimming down the after-school activity list, enlisting the help of a tutor, or simply having a talk about the importance of honesty.” Ó

Symphony Invites Youth & Parents to Hear Young North State Musicians

t the North State Symphony, February is the Month of the Young Musician, and the symphony is offering North State Parent readers a very special invitation to be part of it all! First, hear talented young people from all over the North State area compete on Sunday, February 17, at California State University, Chico during the Young Artist Auditions (YAA). Watch as violinists, pianists, vocalists and players of other orchestral instruments perform well-known selections from a classical repertoire. Judges, led by North State Symphony (NSS) Music Director Kyle Wiley Pickett, will award first and second prizes in two divisions: High School (and occasionally an exceptional middle schooler), and College-University. Cash prizes are provided by Chico Guild and Redding League, two volunteer groups that support NSS. The Guild also manages the competition, which takes place at noon at CSU, Chico’s PAC Recital Hall; the auditions are free to watch. Perhaps the best prize for the Young Artist Auditions first place winner in each division is the opportunity to later perform as a soloist with the North State Symphony. February not only marks the 2013 YAA competition, but also the orchestral solo appearance of the 2012 High School YAA winner, violinist Nellie Ponarul. At two upcoming February performances, Nellie Ponarul will appear in front of the entire orchestra playing the first movement of Barber’s Violin Concerto. The symphony will also play Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella Suite” and will close with “Jupiter,” Mozart’s final symphony. For more insight into the music and the symphony, conductor Kyle Wiley Pickett will give a free pre-concert talk one hour before each performance. The concerts, called “Experience Charm!,” take place February 23, 7:30 p.m. at Redding’s Cascade Theatre, and in Chico on February 24, 2 p.m. at CSU, Chico’s Laxson Auditorium. ometimes children are born with challenges indicating they will require interventions to reach their potential. Others meet expected developmental milestones as babies, but begin showing behaviors during their toddler and preschool years that send up red flags to parents and pediatricians. Some children appear to do well as babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, and only after entering formal schooling do they begin exhibiting symptoms indicating that specific educational programming, in addition to or instead of the regular classroom curriculum, may be required to help them reach their potential.

MY CHILD ISN’T LEARNING

Then there are also children who don’t show obvious signs of a specific disability, yet don’t learn like the majority of students … they simply don’t match with the educational system the way it’s currently set up. These children seem to be good at everything but school, and just like those with more serious conditions, they have the right to appropriate educational modifications needed for their school success. Public Law 94-142 provides that all children have the right to learn to the degree their potential allows. The law says “All states must develop and implement policies that assure a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to all children with disabilities.”

When a child isn’t achieving as well as expected, parents tend to feel frustrated, sad and confused. Often they don’t know what to do and may blame themselves, their child or the school. Blame helps no one. Instead, parents can take proactive steps that lead to educational success: “Parents have so much power to influence the education of their children, but only if they take the time and make the effort to go to the school and talk with the teachers,” says Darbie Andrews, teacher and counselor at Salisbury High School in Red Bluff. The first step in handling a concern is requesting a meeting with the child’s classroom teacher. Parents 19

Help! My Child Isn’t Learning must come prepared with questions about their child’s progress, and ask what is being done to address educational needs. The teacher might assure parents that children mature and learn at different rates, and that their child falls within norms for the grade level. She will note the specific parental worries, and keep track of the student’s growth. If the parents are not satisfied, or if the teacher, too, has concerns, a second step is taken: a Student Study Team (SST) meeting. Usually parents, the teacher, a school psychologist and an administrator attend the SST. A speech therapist and special education teacher could be included. The student participates if he is old enough to understand and contribute to the discussion. The SST is an opportunity for everyone involved in the child’s daily school life to state the child’s strengths along with areas of concern. The meeting culminates with the creation of a time-limited intervention plan, usually six to eight weeks. The plan may be as minor as keeping a daily reading log and ongoing home/school communication, or as major as a change in the child’s programming. Selected home/school team members monitor student growth. At the end of the arranged time, a second meeting is called to evaluate improvement. If progress was made, the modifications remain in place, and it is hoped growth will continue. If the plan has not resulted in greater success, a third step is recommended. The third step includes one or more formal evaluations done by the school psychologist, speech pathologist or a special education teacher. The results of the evaluations determine whether a child qualifies for special services or accommodations. Children with physical or medical conditions that interfere with classroom success, such as poor vision, poor hearing or diabetes, for example, might be placed on a 504 plan. This plan spells out modifications and accommodations in the child’s physical environment needed for the child to perform

at the same level as his peers. This could include large-font books, sitting nearer the center of teaching, or receiving medication during the day. If formal evaluations indicate a learning disability or speech impairment, for instance, special services may be recommended. In this case, the home/ school team develops an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that describes in detail the education program designed to meet the child’s unique needs. This document states objectives and goals, and benchmarks for reaching the goals. The home/school team reviews the IEP annually, and new or modified goals are set. A complete formal evaluation is redone every three years. The amount of information parents receive at SST or IEP meetings can feel overwhelming. When they sign the legally binding 504 Plan or IEP, they may wonder if they’re doing the right thing. They are encouraged to ask questions during or following these meetings so that everyone understands what has been agreed on. “Parents have to keep open lines of communication with the teachers and seek information on a regular basis,” says Andrews. Only through everyone’s commitment to the child’s education program can the child be successful. School is a child’s job. When children are not successful in school, they don’t feel good about themselves. They may show physical symptoms associated with stress, or not want to attend school. Their relationships with peers can suffer. They might adopt coping or attention-seeking behaviors, such as becoming the class

clown, making obnoxious remarks in class, or failing to do their assignments. Everyone involved with children should be aware of each child’s individual needs, to help them become successful and not fall into maladaptive behaviors. It takes time and effort on the part of parents and teachers. With home and school working together to provide appropriate education, children have the opportunity to successfully learn to the best of their potential and have a productive future. lanced at your child’s text messages lately? No? How about her e-mails or online chats? If you take a peek, you’ll find plenty of sentence fragments, emoticons and shortcuts like LOL (laugh out loud) and BFF (best friends forever). Punctuation? Forget about it. Which begs the question: Where has all the good writing gone? Chances are, you won’t find it anywhere around the ecommunication world. Even blogging tends to be informal, as do the observations and insights teens share on their Facebook pages. Writing – all forms of it – matters, no matter what field

kids pursue, says Julie Manley, a language arts curriculum coach and classroom teacher. “A scientist needs to publish well-written papers. An employer expects employees to be able to write.” And yes, it’s even important, she says, to be able to transmit readable, coherent emails. There’s a growing awareness among educators that kids need writing skills for life, not just to pass high school English or a state-mandated standardized test. “Our goal is to prepare kids to be good writers,” says Manley. English and language arts teachers seem downright passionate about teaching writing and literacy skills to children, and voice frustration when parents don’t share their zeal. “We are a grade-centric society,” says Heather

Hoffacker, a middle school language arts department chair. “Parents often worry more about how their child is doing than about what they are doing. And that’s not the point. If they’re not literate and critical thinkers, how do they expect to be successful?”

How Kids Learn Writing

To shape youngsters into literate and critical thinkers, schools begin teaching writing fundamentals, including sentence structure, mechanics and paragraphing, in the elementary years. Alive tonomy and voice in writing,” says Hoffacker. “It’s the bridge between the elementary concept of learning to write and the high school and college process of self-expression, self-evaluation and critical thinking.” In other words, by sixth grade or so, a student might be asked to progress from standard book reports to thoughtful essays produced in narrative or expository style. Hoffacker works to help students cultivate those highly developed thinking skills. She also shows kids ways to experiment with different writing strategies and styles, and connect reading with writing. While educators make certain they expose students to creative writing, language arts teachers, especially in middle and high school, focus more on structured and analytical writing than on the genres of fiction, poetry and narratives we commonly think of as “creative.” High school English teacher Patti Crouch teaches her ninth-graders ways to set up an argument. “We spend more time on analytical writing because that’s the way kids will be writing in college,” she explains. By the time the students hit their senior year, they’re ready to grapple with more sophisticated ideas.

“Writing is all about communication,” says Crouch. “Students who find their own voice in their writing are often the ones who have a sense that their own ideas count,” she says. “They are the kids who read a lot, the ones who talk about books and politics with their parents.” Still, today’s English and literature instructors don’t stop at imbuing their students with reasoning and critical thinking skills. The standard five-paragraph essay is alive and well and thriving in middle and high schools. Why has this venerable essay form endured for so many years? “It’s a structure to hang ideas on,” explains Crouch. “It’s rudimentary, like learning scales.” The format – which includes an introduction, supporting body, evidence and conclusion – works for everything from science reports to personal letters and term papers, and helps students get their ideas across clearly.” Ó

Encouraging Daily Writing 750 Words is a popular writing website that encourages daily writing of … 750 words! Author Julia Cameron, in her book The Artist's Way, encourages the daily practice of “Morning Pages”: three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness writing done first thing in the morning. 750 Words offers another avenue for daily writing, along with simple yet effective motivators to do so, such as a variety of “badges” awarded as writing goals are achieved (i.e., a ten-day writing streak). It also offers the “750 Words One Month Challenge” each month, and if successful, participating writers’ names are added to the website’s “Wall of Awesomeness.” For youth and teens, 750 Words can be a fun and powerful motivator for writing, as explained by a teacher who encourages student use of the site: “I have recently given my students the option to earn extra credit by signing up and participating at this website. In the past week, I have seen these students find a joy in writing that they haven’t before. They enjoy the online component, the freedom to write what they want, and the fun they get out of seeing all the various statistics. For some of them, it is … the only thing they really feel proud of having done when it comes to writing, and the only way I have come up with to get them motivated.” 750words.com is fun and effective, and is open to everyone to use; it’s supported by donations and is advertising-free. You can also help your child create his or her own book. The process can range from old-fashioned hand-crafting to using an online service like picaboo.com or bookemon.com ($10 & up, plus shipping).
