www.golfingnews.ca Montreal Is A Cosmopolitan City! your home away from home. After a several month hiatus from travelling it was time to get back in the saddle and begin my journey to Montreal, Quebec. The main purpose of my trip was to attend and cover the 2014 RBC Canadian Open PGA Tour event. My arrival began with a nice tour of Montréal and then off to the Prince of Pop’s, Bruno Mars concert at the Bell Centre. This Bruno Mars concert was a highlight of this trip for me. I have never seen such an elaborate performance
Each day I drove my Ford Taurus to a golf course to play including firstly Montreal Island, then St Raphael and finally Royal Montreal where the tournament was held. The final part of my stay was at the iconic Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, also in downtown Montreal. “ In 1962 when Place Ville Marie was built they decided to connect the office tower to the train station and hotel

My stay in Montreal began in the St. Martin Hotel ideally located in downtown Montreal near St Catherine Street. This 4-year-old boutique type hotel features very fancy rooms based on today’s design features. It was fun to drive up with your car, hand off the keys to their staff and then explore Montreal from

Traveling to Quebec is always enjoyable for me primarily because of the people there. This trip was no exception and also allowed for more time to explore the cosmopolitan world-class city of Montreal. It really is quite easy to get there from Thunder Bay with just over 3 hours of travelling time. Once you arrive you will experience many unique activities and return home with a refreshed new perspective on your life at home! Papineau, Regional Director of Public Relations.

“ It is quite interesting and useful because in summer it is quite hot outside so it is our air conditioning and in the winter the reverse- heated so we don’t need boots.” The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is an iconic hotel now owned by the Quebec Pension Fund. This is the hotel where the gold floor concept originated. It is mostly business travelers during the week or on the weekends leisure. It is very useful because you get your own concierge, check in at the 19th floor and will be a VIP and have a beautiful view. “ We are famous for our John Lennon and Yoko Ono visit in 1969 where they did their bed in for piece protesting

Montreal Golf at It’s Finest! BY SCOTT A. SUMNER
NW Ontario Golfing News Marc Gervais is the GM of Club de Golf De Ille Montreal founded in 2001 with the island course and the second course in
2003, the Irish course both designed by Pat Ruddy, an Irish golf architect. “ We are located on the east end of the island of Montreal, about 20 to 25 minutes from downtown. Our club has 200 members and the public play. The greens fees range from $29 to $69 maximum and we are told by many people this course should be a green fee of $150.00. Golf carts are $17 per person. The 8th hole on the Island course is an island green with a par 5.” said Marc. Both the courses are par 70 with the Island being more of a parkland course about 6500 yards and a good challenge. The Irish course is a true links course in an urban setting which you won’t find elsewhere in Canada. It is all man made and from the back tees a par 70 with 7224 yards and a 75.6 rating from 5 different sets of tees. It is a very good challenge with pot bunkers and some double greens.
“ Our budget for maintenance is very good so we keep the courses in top shape. The Irish course is incredible because you don’t know you are in Montreal but perhaps in Ireland or Scotland. There are undulations and we keep our greens
between 9 and 10 on the stemp meter. Today we will have about 500 players on both courses but generally you can phone or go on the website up to 7 days ahead and get a tee time.”
Scott Simmons, CEO of Golf Canada Talks About Golf BY SCOTT A. SUMNER
NW Ontario Golfing News I sat down with Scott Simmons CEO of Golf Canada recently at the 2014 RBC Canadian Open and asked him some probing questions! Royal Montreal is a special place to host the Canadian Open! “ The Royal Montreal Golf club is heaven on earth and it is a beautiful day here at the RBC Canadian Open. We have world class players and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.” “In 2001 Tiger was here at Royal Montreal defending his victory the year before at Glen Abbey. We were here in 2007 when Steve Jones edged out Greg Norman. The Presidents Cup was here in 2007 and we all remember the match then between Mike Weir and Tiger Woods in singles. It has been 13 years between Opens and the clubs can only host so
many times.” How is the 2014 RBC Canadian Open going this year? “ We are having a great year. RBC has been such a great partner, you couldn't ask for any better. This is our year 7 with RBC. We have moved the event to many courses and are really proud of the great fields, infrastructure and volunteers which make it a world-class event. Team RBC has sponsored some great players like Snedeker, McDowell, Furyk and Els whom are adding to a great field. It is a fun week for Canadian golf.” “ We have many spectators. When you get great weather and a leader board it helps attendance. Typically from Monday to Sunday we are about 100,000 people for the week. We generate some proceeds for both mens and womens opens that get reinvested into golf in Canada. There are also government’s funds, corporate spon-
sorship, entry fees and licensing. The RBC Open on television is great promotion for Canada, for Quebec, for Royal Montreal Golf Club for golf and Golf Canada. We work to talk about Canada and golf this week.”
What is the state of the game of golf in Canada? “ Golf is fantastic in Canada. This is the number one participation sport in Canada. It is a $14 billion business, bigger than every other participation sport combined in terms of economic impact. Rounds may be down probably from 70 to 60 million, which is a concern, but something the industry is addressing. For 2 decades the industry didn’t have to do anything, just open the course in the morning. Private clubs had long waiting lists and huge initiation fees. There are cycles in golf and maybe the tee sheet isn't full or waiting lists as long but it just means the clubs have to be more innovative. There are good plans in place like golf in schools. Now we are being more creative to promote golf.” There are lots of new ideas on how to attract more people to golf? “ Nothing is changing the game of golf. Some people are being innovative to help those just getting into the game to enjoy it more say with shorter holes or bigger cups. This will help kids start out with golf’s version of water wings. There are lots kids playing in teams to start out which they love. Golf is the greatest game in the world. The future is good and will turn up because of the power of 2000 courses, 3500 PGA of Canada pros and Golf Canada programs. If we have a Canadian wining a big event it will be huge to promote the game. These players will win. The Canadian flag on the leader board in itself will drive participation in the sport.”

My Notes From Inaugural The 2014 PGA Tour Staal Open presented by Tbaytel at the Whitewater Golf Club BY SCOTT A. SUMNER
NW Ontario Golfing News There had been much anticipation to see a high level tournament at the beautiful Whitewater Golf Club, probably ever since it opened in 2004 with much acclaim. After several attempts to make this happen the week of July 14 to 20, 2014 was a special one for golf in Northwestern Ontario! My week included time each day at the course including playing in the Official Pro Am. It was fun to tweet each day @tbay25 and especially nice to meet so
many golf enthusiasts. As a member of the media I have attended and covered many PGA Tour events including the RBC Canadian Open, Masters, Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup, US Open and ATT Pebble Beach. This Thunder Bay event was a very well organized, professional set up and one that everyone can be proud. It will help put Thunder Bay on the golfing map. Jeff Monday, President PGA Tour Canada at a pre-event media conference. “ We are looking forward to seeing the community impact. The enthusiasm around the tournament is fantastic. The experience our players will have in the Thunder Bay area will be phenomenal. When we have so many sponsors, volunteers and a good crowd for a first year event it is great.” “ The players are going to love Whitewater with its great variation to the design- short holes, long holes. The greens are pretty tough and there is rough out there so it will be a great test.” “ We like to partner with people at the centre of the community and the Staal Foundation is great. They are incredible athletes and giving back to their community which aligns perfectly with us. We look at the interest level for the tournament in the community and we see that through media coverage, the number of volunteers and attendance. Some of the best feedback is from the players themselves. They are a great unbiased judge of what it feels like what when they are inside the ropes.” “ We are off to a pretty darn good start in year 1. The future will look even better once the word gets out about the event.” Eric Staal, Captain Carolina Hurricanes “ The ability to be involved in an event like this is great. We are excited just to be involved and give back to the community.
July 2014
Everything impressed us here and it has been first class from the moment we said we would jump on board. The organizing committee did a fantastic job in putting on a great event.” “ Whitewater is a great facility. This event is a great launching pad for us. You are trying to establish yourself in the NHL, focused on your playing and career and a lot of that is narrowly focused and selfish. We always wanted to start a foundation and give back. It has been a slow process with many different ideas and there are many opinions but we wanted to make sure we would do it right. We want to focus on cancer and children in particular.” “ We are hockey players and in the summer we all come back to Thunder Bay. It is great to be involved in a golf tournament that is a big deal. We love golf and watch it so it is a great opportunity.” “ My golf game is average right now but it should be a lot better considering we missed the playoffs for a few years. I play a little more in Carolina where I am a member. Up here in Thunder Bay we are on the lake mostly so I don’t play as much as I like but love the game. As far as Staal golfers go Marc is a distance fourth, then Jared and Jordan and I are close.”
Christian from Total who showcased a Formula 1 car on site! Total have had a factory in Montreal since 2007.They manufacture oil in Canada and the consumer can use it for their car all the way up to an excavator. They also supply the fuels for F1. “ The oil in the car is like the blood in your veins. It has to be good. This is a 2012 F1 car actually raced by Roman Grojean for Lotus Reneault. The best way for us to promote the oil is talk about Formula 1 cars. We take your picture with the car and you will see the picture emailed to you.” “ The car is built for the driver with its own custom seat. This car is a 2.4 litre V8 and develops 750 HP. The 2014 car is 1.6 litre V6 double turbo and semi hybrid electric and gas. It makes a different sound.” Christopher Ross, age 27, PGA Tour Canada player from Dundas Ontario and graduate of Eastern Michigan University, a Division 1 school. “ I had a great 4 years at college and
never missed an event. We almost brought our team to a national championship, playing other schools like Louisville, Oklahoma State and Georgia.” “ I grew up around with the game and went to the Florida Q school where I got a really good conditional card, not full status
but have played well so far. My dad was the executive director of the RCGA for 17 years.” “ I am the PGA Tour Canada RV guy and started traveling in it in Saskatoon after a grueling 4 day trip for Southern Ontario. Now I am living right next to the putting green at Whitewater. All I have to do is hop the fence. It is an advantage for me, getting a little short game practice in. My wife and three year old travel with me as well as three cats- Dom, Little Guy and Bonsey.” Christopher has a red eye flight to Montreal Monday and tried to Monday Qualify for the RBC Canadian Open missing by a few shots. He has previously played in 2 Canadian Opens in 2010 and 2012 and 2 Web.com events before. Hamilton Golf and Country club is his home course. “ The opportunity to play golf at this level is very financially difficult but I have have some great sponsors from our Hamilton course.”
hit a great putt and I hit a good one and it went in.” “ The course was amazing. It really played tough and was everything we want with a lot of drivers and you had to place the ball on the greens in order to get good chances. You couldn’t have had a better course to win on for my first time.” “ For a first time event this was as good as it comes. There are a lot of good events and they all have their special moments. This is a great town and they obviously love golf with all the people out there and all the cheers. It was the place to be in Thunder Bay. It was nice.” “ I knew it was in me to win and nice to have it all come together. This is a step to where I want to go and I am glad I was a able to accomplish it.”
Joel Dahman is from Washington and played at the University of Washington and PGA Tour Canada player leading money leader so far this season. He made the cut and finished well at the RBC Canadian Open. In Thunder Bay he tied for 5th. “ This is where I want to be, on the PGA Tour and to get a little taste of it is good. Just being inside the ropes, the locker room with the guys and finding out you can compete with them is great. It was awesome playing with Ernie Els today. He couldn’t have been a nicer guy and gave me some advice.” “ Today my round wasn’t great. I drove it well but didn’t make birdies. Each birdie means a lot financially. I finished in the 50’s and made as much as second place on PGA Tour Canada. I have been playing PGA Tour Canada for 5 years. My goal is to finish first to get a full Web.com exemption.”
Wes Homan, Winner 2014 Staal Open “ It is great to get the win and a sense of relief given all the hard work I have put in. It was great having my dad here as he doesn’t get to come out a whole lot. He has been my support system.” “ It played tough out there as it was windy and the greens were firm. My last putt was good and I said to myself, just because I’m nervous doesn’t meant I can’t
“ Our time at Whitewater was incredible. The hospitality all week, the set up, the course was excellent. The amount of people out there watching on Sunday was incredible- as many as I had following me out here on the PGA Tour with Ernie Els. Thunder Bay should be proud of what they put together, especially in their first year. They did a fabulous job.”

WES HOMAN WINS STAAL FOUNDATION OPEN PRESENTED BY TBAYTEL FOR FIRST PGA TOUR CANADA Round 4 – Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel Final Leaderboard – 1. Wes Homan 71 (-17) 2. Greg Eason 70 (-16) 3. Jeffrey Corr 69 (-14) 4. Daniel Miernicki 68 (-11) T-5. Joel Dahmen 69 (-10) T-5. John Catlin 68 (-10) With a crucial up-and-down for birdie at the 72nd hole, Cincinatti, Ohio’s Wes Homan claimed the inaugural Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel, his first PGA TOUR Canada win. The 30-year old prevailed in a dramatic fight to the finish over rookie Greg Eason of England, who made a clutch birdie of his own at the last to force Homan’s hand. Homan calmly stepped up a drained a 6footer, punctuated with a pump of the fist, to secure his first win in four seasons on TOUR. “It felt great to make that putt,” said Homan, who finished at 17-under for the week. “It’s more of a sense of relief about all the hard work I know I’ve been putting in and sometimes people don’t know about. It was amazing. I did hurt my back on one of those fist pumps, so it was pretty exciting and fun.” The win moves Homan into the fifth spot on the Order of Merit halfway through the 2014 season, in position to earn Web.com Tour status in the season-long chase for The Five. “It’s huge. Every shot counts,” Homan said, acknowledging he has a long way to go the remainder of the season. “This isn’t gonna change my life, but it’s going to be a step towards where I want to go and I’m glad I was able to accomplish it.” The Southern Methodist University grad began the day with a two stroke advantage
Page 6
over Eason, a promising rookie in his first season as a pro. Homan would lead by as many as four shots during the front nine, but came to the 72nd hole with a one stroke lead. Eason, needing at least a birdie, struck a brilliant wedge shot to within two feet, setting the stage for Homan, who needed to get up-and-down from some 60 feet away. Homan responded beautifully with a chip that caught a piece of the hole and ran out to six feet, then poured in the putt to seal the victory. “I tried to convince myself I didn’t care, so I just kind of freed myself up. I’ve been hitting good chips all week and even over on the practice green, and I’ve been working on that since last week,” said Homan. “That last putt was great. I said ‘just because I’m nervous doesn’t mean I can’t hit a good one,’ and I hit a great putt.” The win was particularly special for Homan and his father Chip, who was on hand to watch his son play for the first time in nearly two years. “He doesn’t get to come out a whole lot and he’s my biggest supporter and has been since day one,” said Homan. “It’s nice to be able to do that with him here.” Homan’s previous best finish was a solo second at the 2011 Bayview Place Island Savings Open presented by Times Colonist, with the win coming in his 26th career start. The $27,000 winner’s check put him at $35,692 in season-long earnings. “I knew it was in me. I’ve been working hard, and it was nice to let it all accumulate to this big win today,” Homan said of finally breaking through for his first win. Eason’s solo second result moved him to seventh on the Order of Merit, while Apopka, Florida’s Jeff Corr finished in solo third after a final round 69 to finish at
14-under. PERSONS SECURES RBC CANADIAN OPEN SPOT WITH CLOSING BIRDIE Though he didn’t know where he stood exactly, Fargo, North Dakota’s Josh Persons knew a birdie at the 72nd hole Sunday would go a long way in helping him move up to No. 3 on the Order of Merit and secure a spot in the RBC
Canadian Open. As it turns out, the birdie Persons posted made all the difference, allowing him to finish in a fourway tie for 11th and make just enough to sneak by incumbent No. 3 Matt Harmon, who missed the cut. One shot higher, and he would have missed out by $155. Continued Next Page
