www.golfingnews.ca Golf In Canada Doing Well! BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

Great Outdoors I met with Scott Simmons, Executive Director of Golf Canada recently at the 2016 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey in Oakville Ontario to ask some questions about our sport! Golf Canada is the governing body of golf.

\ Sometimes I hear people talking about Glen Abbey being sold. Is that

How is this year's RBC Canadian Open going? “The heat and drought we have had here has made the course so firm and fast, like I have never seen before. You could have said with no rough to speak of the guys would be burning it up but I tell you its hard to spin the ball and go flag hunting. It is also windy out there so this is a real test of golf and interesting to see the course play this way after events here in 08 and 9 when it was rain soaked. This week it is a completely different golf course. We have Number 1 and 2 players in the world here, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson and some interesting Canadian performances. The weather is hot but better than rain.”

true? “ Glen Abbey will never be sold. The

owners, Club link, are real estate developers and they are trying to get the zoning changed so they can redevelop it. These things take a long time and every time I get asked this question I say it is business as usual. We now have to figure out where we go in 2018 and 2019 and Glen Abbey is high on the list for consideration. In 2017 the RBC Canadian Open will be held at Glen Abbey. We have resigned RBC?as title sponsor until 2023 which is fantastic ”

Why do you like about Glen Abbey as a venue to hold out national championship? “ It is good to be close to home. The Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum and our offices are here. It is nice to have a home game. There are many fans that like coming back because of the fan friendly nature of this course. Nicklaus designed it and you can see 10 holes from near the clubhouse. The amphitheater greens make it the best spectator course in the world in my opinion.” How is golf doing in Canada in 2016? “Canada is the number one country for golf in terms of participation. 5.7 million people play at least one game a year for the highest participation sport in Canada a year, 1 in 6 Canadians. We have 2,346 facilities in Canada, more golf facilities than any country in the world outside of the US.” “ I would say the game is really healthy. Is there room to grow it, absolutely. The biggest challenge for golf is kids and just the way life is changing. Kids are taking up sport at a lower rate that they did 10 or 20 years ago so every sport has the challenge of attracting kids. Golf has so many inherent values that other sports don’t have. The core values it teaches, the physically of it with injuries say with concussion. Golf doesn't have that negative factor.”

Superior Dirt Riders Hold 2 Day Race Weekend!

The Superior Dirt Riders held a two day racing event on the KBMX weekend July 9 and 10 for races #3 and #4 with the Friday, July 8 practice from 5pm to 8pm at the track in Kakabeka Falls (Thunder Bay), ON. It is always exciting to see these motocross races each year! After watching the Supercross series through the winter on TV the real life sights and sounds of motocross is great. There is always a wide age range of

racers atthe Superior Dirt Riders from youngsters to the mature riders many of whom I recognized from their day jobs in business here in Thunder Bay.These guys can still ride well and are fun to watch. Many of the top regular riders seem to be injured during this week end but still lots of good race action. Make sure you get out to a race next year!

North Country Cycle & Sports: 40 Years of Success BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

Thunder Bay BUSINESS The company we are familiar with today as North Country Cycle & Sports was started in 1975 by Larry Brownlee as a used car dealership called Automart on Memorial Avenue. Today the well known recreational powersports dealer operate from their own building on Roland Street. “ In 1980 my dad got out of the used car sales and the business became Honda Hut with motorcycles at a location across from the current Super 8 Hotel on Memorial Ave. In 1984 we moved to

Euclid Avenue and took on the Yamaha and Polaris brands including snowmobiles as well as Honda ATC’s as they were called then- 3 wheelers before ATV’s that are 4 wheels of today.” said Laura

Guadagnolo ( formerly Brownlee), General Manager of

North Country Cycle & Sports. “ We were there for several years before moving to May Street where Norm’s Boat is now. At this location we added marine products to our line up. It was then we changed our operating name to North Country Cycle & Sports.” In 1996 the company moved to Squier Street, operating out of the old Walker’s Marine building, but in 1999 moved into their our own building where they still are located today. Laura Guadagnolo started working in the business as a teenager at the age of 13 or 14, doing inventory at year end and has been at the dealership almost ever since.

Larry Brownlee has been retired for 10 years. “The business is about fun and I like it. I have a sled, motorcycle, quad and boat and have been involved in these sports since I was young with a quad and dirt bike which we rode at camp. I like the industry and had fun growing up in the sport and hope future families can do it. My son,who is 2 1/2, loves seeing the machines.” said Laura Today North Country Cycle & Sports have a full time staff of 15 with certified mechanics, parts and sales people certified by the suppliers. Laura works in the business with her sister Darragh and are the next generation.Their brother Cameron works full time in the industry as well as a District Sales Manager for Brunswick Corporation.

North Country Cycle & Sports offer Lund, Mercury, Polaris, Yamaha and Lowe boats in their product line of snowmobiles, ATV’s and boats. They recently stopped selling motorcycles. “We have many long term customers since our start, November 1975.There are seasonal customers like boaters who come in spring time and we ask how was their winter was and in the fall see say you next year. Then the snowmobile customers might come in. Some of our customers have products all year round.” said Laura. “ We have seen customers come in over the years with their children and now those children are grown up and come in themselves. It is generational.” “ When I got into motorcycles at the first I didn’t even know how to ride one but I quickly learned, ” laughed company founder, Larry Brownlee. “ I started out with a friend in the used car business with Automart (Thunder Bay ) Limited. North Country is our operating name. The local Honda car dealership wanted to get out of the motorcycle and small engine side of the business. I could never afford the car business but we added motorcycles to our operation. We did sell used cars and motorcycle at two different locations for a while. In 1984 we stared with Polaris and also Yamaha bikes.” said Larry Brownlee. “ The building we constructed for our business was a good step and we should have done it sooner. It is nice to have my daughters in the family business. Today my health doesn’t allow me to ride all the products but I do some boating.” North Country Cycle & Sports has been

very involved in the AYA fishing tournament which has been going in Thunder Bay for 7 years now, is very successful and good for the future of the sport. The AYA Fishing event gets young kids interested in fishing and being outdoors all day instead of in front of screens smiles Laura! Be sure to visit the bright showroom of North Country Cycle & Sports for all your recreational product needs!

ANCHORS AWEIGH!!! The phrase "anchors aweigh" is a report that the anchors are clear of the sea bottom and, therefore, the ship is officially underway. "Anchors aweigh" is often misspelled as "Anchor's away," leading to confusion of the terms and the misunderstanding that it means "to drop anchor." So be sure you are clear to your shipmates of your intent!

sure that it has a lanyard to hang around your neck if it becomes necessary. Another thing that will make the difference for your enjoyment plus your health and safety…Sunglasses! Yes…VERY important as, on the water, it becomes VERY uncomfortable for the eyes due to eye strain, so you must wear sunglasses. Polarized lenses are infinitely better. And don’t forget the eyeglass straps, to keep them from dropping into the water and sinking to the bottom.

By Sherry Aalto So whether you are pulling up anchor or dropping down anchor, there are a few things you might want to know about before you set out on for with your family and friends on boating trip! First…you will need a boating license. If you want to apply for your boating license, renew your license, take the online Canada’s Boating Safety Course or find a lost license the go to www.boatsmartexam.com and see if this site will be helpful to you. This site has everything you need for 100% Canada Safety Course. Boating in the summer is a national pass time for people you just want to get off the main land and plunge into something more refreshing but, along with the enjoyment of this recreation, comes responsibility. The captain must always be in in control of his ship and his shipmates. The captain must make sure that the ship is in perfect running condition and that supplies and tools, a Leatherman Squirt is handy. Also some wrenches and spark plugs for those unexpected mechanical failures. Extra gasoline should be aboard and the fuel should be stored securely and all caps should have the proper amount of twist on them. Hot weather can cause any container to expand, especially when the container has flammables inside of it. All canisters should be cleaned of any spillage of gasoline so that other sources do not ignite residues or fumes. There should always be the proper life preserver for each person aboard the craft and the life preservers must be worn during the entire time each person in on the craft. Accidents do happen and a fatality is the last thing anyone wants to have on their conscience. Safety flares for emergencies should also be aboard so that if you need help and have no other source for communication, the flares can make the difference between life and death. If you have radio communications and will be in more remote areas that transmit a weak signal, you can purchase what is known as a VHF booster. This will hone in on a frequency so that you can communicate to those waiting back on shore or send out a mayday for help! Check out how to extend your radio’s range or your cell phone range while out on the waters. Go to www.boatingmag.com this is very interesting. Supplies for boating should be a good fire source like waterproof matches or a good lighter carried in a zip-lock bag. Also a supplies of nonperishable foods and drinking water, warm clothing. shoes or boots, a

O.K. You are almost done! The best thing to do, of course, is make your list and plan ahead at least 4 days before you are ready to ‘cast off’. You want to have the best boating experience possible every time you go out on the water. So, for your sake and the sake of those you love…even the dog…be PREPARED and have a wonderful summer out on our beautiful waters! good bug deterrent, along with at least a 30 factor, waterproof sunscreen. Supplies are not usually thought of so seriously…until you actually need them for yourself or your family. Flashlight (waterproof) Goes without saying, you never know if you might need it. Note: Most flashlights are not waterproof. roof. Small First Aid Kit. It should include some Band-Aids, antibacterial cream and wipes, gauze and tape. A knife for the “what if” uses. A Signal Mirror. If you are floating in a vast ocean, this little device can save your life. Be sure that yours has a lanyard so as to hang around your neck (you can’t hold everything in your hands and that includes bottle water on a bottle water sling. Bring a compass. If you are at sea and cannot see the shore (which is difficult even if fairly close due to the fact that you’re low in the water and waves are around you) and so long as you know the general direction to head back to shore (know your map ahead of time) then this could save your life. This compass is luminescent (glow in the dark), and could become invaluable at night. Again, be sure to attach a lanyard for hanging around your neck. Then there is the Para cord. A zillion uses. You can make them yourself, or buy them. Check out Para cord uses on Youtube. It could save your life. A Mylar Foil blanket It’s small to pack, and will provide crucial warmth if you’re stranded during colder weather. The air temperature is always cooler over the sea than the land, so having one of these could be a lifesaver. If you suffer from motion sickness then, you might want to check out Dramamine. Motion sickness could dehydrate you due to vomiting, and quickly put your life at risk. These little pills could save your butt. Take one tablet an hour before departure. The newer variety are fairly non-drowsy. Then bring a watch. Knowing how long you’ve been adrift could assist in supposing how many miles you’ve traveled and where you ‘might’ be on the map. It also helps you estimate how many miles you’ve traveled while under way at an estimated speed. Bring a bandana. It has a multitude of

uses, including simply keeping the sun off your head. A hat with a wide, floppy brim to keep sunburn off your face and neck. Bring a whistle. A powerful signaling tool! Not all whistles are created equal, and be

Bruce Cook Acclaimed FMX Athlete Is An Inspiration! On January 3, 2014, Bruce Cook was poised to make freestyle motocross history. Already an acclaimed FMX athlete, the Kelowna, Canada native had spent the past few years touring the world, performing for thousands of fans at each tour stop. He had made his X Games debut in 2012 and now was riding with one of his longtime idols, Travis Pastrana, in Nitro Circus Live. On this January night, Cook was going to try to rock the action sports world by attempting the world’s first double frontflip. In an instant however, everything changed. Cook under rotated on the landing and crashed hard. He underwent surgery the following day to repair a broken T-11 vertebrae. Cook also bad suffered broken ribs and damage to his spinal cord resulting in paralysis from the waist down. Bruce now faced the

biggest challenge of his life. Always a highly motivated person, Cook tackled his injuries with the same focus and drive that had fueled his career. In an interview with CBC Radio just days after the accident, Bruce said, ““I’ve got a long road ahead… I’m staying positive that I’ll get through. I’m staying positive that I’ll walk again with enough work and support and determination.” Today, Cook is still as driven and passionate about action sports - and about life - as ever. In fact, just ten months after his accident, Cook was back on a dirt bike, popping wheelies on his first ride. Only a few days later, Bruce was riding with his mentor, now good friend, Travis Pastrana at his “Pastranaland” complex when he hit his first jump since his crash. Cook continues to motivate and inspire people around the world with his story. His considerable technical skills have also made him an in-demand judge for FMX competitions. “I haven't really changed what I do,” Bruce explained recently, “I just slightly changed how I do it.” When asked what he was passionate about in an interview conducted a few months prior to his injuries, Cook answered, “Inspiring others to do what they want and to LIVE!” By that measure, clearly nothing has changed for Bruce Cook. Bruce Cook is now age 29 and will perform at the Thunder Bay event. “I was about 5 years when I had my first ride on a little 50cc Honda in Kelowna where I was born and raised.” said Bruce. He started on bicycles because it was easier

Page 8

to afford. Then it was dirt bikes and building bigger and bigger jumps. “ My parents had acreage and I could use the tractor to build dirt jumps. My cousins raced pro motocross but my thing was the jumps. Most of my time was at home at my track with jumps. The sport of Freestyle Motocross was just starting and I got in and started progressing at a fast pace.” Bruce first met Travis Pastrana in 2008 when he used his foam pit and leaned the back flip for the first time. “ 2 1/2 years ago I was in the Nitro Circus at Hamilton Ontario and going for the worlds first double front flip but ended up under rotating a little bit and slid off my bike and broke my T11 vertebrae in a live show. It was a bad day at work and the most terrifying time of my life. Right off the bat I thought I was still alive and it didn’t hurt my brain or upper body so I kept telling myself it could be worse and I still tell myself that

every day. It helps get through day to day.” “ From the moment I crashed I knew I didn’t want my last show getting wheeled out on a stretcher and wanted go out on a high not a low. I knew I wanted to get back on my bike and ride again and if I would ride I wanted to do a backflip again and another show again- a last show in front of a live audience.” “ It was a lot of hard work but nice having the goal and it drove me in physio and rehab. I used the foam pit again and the first one went well. It is much more difficult because I am now strapped in to the motorcycle. The first one to dirt went well as well.” said Bruce. “ This is my passion and what I love doing. I have carried on and have done a few tours again with Nitro Circus. I would have been happy with one more jump but the feedback from all over the world was so overwhelming I decided to carry on. It has motivated

and inspired people to try new things and get back up when they have been kicked down. The first one was for me and the rest for me and everyone else. It has been a crazy experience. It is a give and take and has motivated me to keep going.” It will be amazing to see perform his back flip in Thunder Bay. “The back flip feels good but it is just as risky every time and I have to be focussed and concentrate on the task at hand. It is cool to travel around and be with some of your good friends. I am looking forward to traveling across Canada.” What is on the horizon for Bruce Cook? “ The Tours are going well and I plan to get into some motivational speaking at some point. Also I want to break some other records with the Polaris Razer side by sides. Lots of exciting stuff to come. The mental part of life is so important.”
