The Ladies of the Links Superior North Ladies Golf Association
The Ladies of the Links Superior North Ladies Golf Association Submitted By: Diane Imrie on behalf of the Superior North Ladies Golf Association To some the sign of spring is the sound of birds chirping, but for a number of other people it is the sound of golf clubs swinging. If the women who head up the Superior North Ladies Golf Association (SNLGA) have their way, that sound will become even more popular amongst the women of our region. The SNLGA was formed back in the spring of 2010 with a mandate to promote golf to women of all ages and abilities, and they do that in a number of different ways. Last fall they participated in Golf Canada’s Golf in Schools program by purchasing a kit full of kid-friendly golf equipment and teacher-led learning resources for Crestview Public School. SNLGA President Sue Wright Cassan also volunteers with the SNAG (Starting New at Golf) initiative which is a program being offered at local elementary schools that teach the fundamentals of golf in a fun, yet educational format. SNLGA’s support of local junior golfer Alex Demko has proven to be another good investment with Alex golfing her way to victory in the Girls 15-19 divi-
sion at the 2015 Maple Leaf Junior Tour Players Championship and to a golf scholarship at The Presbyterian College in Clinton, North Carolina. The SNLGA is able to fund these initiatives with money raised through the hosting of various events and the support of sponsors such as RBC and CIBC. Their signature event is the Whitewater 2-Gal which will be held this year Saturday, June 18th. For just $90 women can enjoy 18-holes of golf at Whitewater Golf Course which includes 6 holes each of alternate shot, best ball and individual play along with a cart, dinner and prizes. Another event sponsored by the SNLGA is the annual Senior Ladies Tournament which is open to women 50 years of age and older. With a mandate to promote golf from Manitouwadge to the Manitoba border, this year’s tournament is being held in Atikokan on Saturday, August 6th. Working in partnership with Happy Times Tours, participants have the opportunity of being transported from Thunder Bay to Atikokan for a day of 18 holes of individual play followed by a turkey dinner and a return bus trip, all for just $65. To close out the season the SNLGA will be hosting another 2-Gal event at

the Thunder Bay Country Club on Sunday, September 11th which includes 18-holes of modified alternate shot, lunch and prizes. Unlike some tournaments that require a golfer to have a handicap to participate, women can golf in SNLGA events by providing either their handicap or an estimate of their average score. Each event is flighted based on each player’s abilities which means that participants are golfing with people similar to themselves. While the ultimate goal of the SNLGA is to get women out on the course to play a round of golf in a friendly and non-intimidating environment, they also want to encourage people to learn about the game. To accomplish that goal, they will be hosting a Handicap and Rules Seminar in the middle of June featuring representatives from Golf Manitoba. The SNLGA is also committed to recognizing and encouraging excellence in the game of golf and this year they are introducing the Champion of Champions Tournament which will see the 2015 champions from each of the ladies clubs within the City of Thunder Bay invited to play off against each other to determine an ultimate champion.

Our players will be active participants in the Bombardier Charity Walk, our teams will wear new jerseys to promote the cause during a select number of games and warm ups and a share of the proceeds from the annual Jim Johnson Memorial Charity event will be directed to the Northern Cancer Fund.” Continued Power, “I’ve spent most of my professional career in cancer care; starting with the incredible team here in Thunder Bay. Every day, I witness, first hand, the unbelievable transformation that is happening in cancer treatment right now. Thanks to personalized patient regimes and targeted treatments, more patients will survive their diagnosis of cancer than have to fight what was once a losing battle. It is our privilege, as members of the Thunder Bay Kings, to continue to provide hope to those facing a cancer diagnosis, and keep families closerto-home with exceptional cancer care here in Northwestern Ontario.”
CAMPING By Sherry Aalto YES! YES! YES! IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR! Camping is the number one favourite pastime in North America, right along with fishing and outdoor adventures! If you are camping for the first time, keep in mind, that all the comforts you enjoy at home will be desired during your camping experience but you will have to plan for usage on a much small scale! Be sure to make a realistic list of what you actually NEED to take with you as when you are packing up your vehicle, space is limited and you must also leave room for the kiddies! Whether you are going camping for a day, a weekend or longer, most of what you use at home will be desired on the trip. First plan out your destination. There are many camping resorts and facilities in our beautiful Sunset Country. RV parks, wilderness camps, resort camping with public beaches, house boats. Thunder Bay, Rainy River, Atikokan, Ignace areas, just to name a few. Searching for the right place can be exhausting so keep it simple and pick an area that will ignite your passion, for example, if you just like to go to an Ontario park for camping, then refine your search to say just that. For other experiences such as camping with some fishing or rock climbing, refine your search for that. Northern Ontario is well known for the Great Outdoors experience and along with camping, what good is camping without a little ghost story? It is alleged that White Otter Castle, located at Turtle River Provincial Park, South of Ignace, Kenora, Ontario, is visited by the ghost of Jimmy Mcouat (an eccentric, hermit). Briefly: In 1903 Jimmy Mcouat arrived on the shores of White Otter Lake between Ignace and Atikokan in Northwestern Ontario. He was a mysterious fellow and not much is known about him prior to his arrival. Legends swiftly circulated about Jimmy, but one thing is generally accepted as truth, and that is he did not wish to "die in a shack." So he set about constructing a "castle" built of logs. White Otter castle has been described as resembling a three storey Dutch-style house with a four storey tower. It is quite a sight to see.
is becoming quite popular. need we say more? Also inform yourself and your party of any safety precautions and conditions for
list of things to bring for camping and don’t forget the favourite toys! You will need these or you will only have one of two choices…go back for the teddy bear, so to speak, OR, listen to an endless expression of heartbreak for the entire trip! Above all, have fun! Forget the laptops, the phones, the Xbox, the computer. Get in touch with your more adventurous side and watch and listen to
your own kids when the ghost stories are being told around the camp fire! Oh! And one last thing…if you are going to tell ghost stories…keep a night light handy for the little ones!
the area you are visiting. For example, wilderness foliage, insect warnings or cautions and because you are in the wilderness, make yourself aware of wild life activity. Also, weather conditions and lake and inland bay warnings, as they can change at a given moment. On the brighter side, bring a telescope, even just a small one will suffice for now, but the amazing starry host will have you becoming a star gazer for life. Enjoy your fire but keep water handy to extinguish any embers that remain unseen to the eye. Also be aware of camp fire advisories. So! Pick your destination! Make your

In 1918 Jimmy passed away as mysteriously as he had lived. He apparently drowned while fishing in his beloved lake. From the time of his death there have been reports of Jimmy Mcouat's (pronounced Mckewitt) apparition being sighted near his "castle" and the lake. Others simply reported an eerie feeling of his "presence" lingering on. You will have to check it out for yourself though. Some of the internet sights to visit for Northern Ontario camping is www.northernontario.travel, also you can google, once again, sunset country wilderness camping or camping in northern Ontario. Also for those you do not wish to ‘rough it’, there is such a thing as Glamping. It is simply camping with a luxurious twist to it. Glamming it up

FISH!PAN FRIED, DEEP FRIED, ROASTED OR SMOKED! By Sherry Aalto Fish! Great to catch! Delicious to eat! Fish is desired by many pallets at the dinner tables around the world and when it comes to “What’s for dinner?”, there are many recipes to tantalize your taste buds when preparing fish as a main entre`. Whether it be at home in your own kitchen, at the campsite or in family or fine dining restaurant, fish is a wonderful choice over the usual burgers and fries. O.k! Let’s have a look at Pan Fried on a camp fire first! Frying The Fish. This is always fun for the kids to watch! Three easy steps: 1) Clean the fish and fillet it/them. 2) Cook the fish. 3) Eat the fish. This is what you will need: Cooking oil, a cooking grate, a spatula, a pan, and some bread crumbs (if desired), 2 eggs. Two side dishes, one for the bread crumbs and one for the 2 beaten eggs. This is what you will do: Clean the fish but leave the skin on. Dip both sides of each fillet into egg and then the breading, until they are completely covered. Next, prepare the cooking surface. Pour
some of the oil into your pan, and set it on a grate that you’ve placed over the campfire. Once the oil is well heated, place the fillets into the pan. Flip them relatively often. Keep in mind that camp fires do not come with a temperature control, so you must turn over the fillets often so they do not burn or stick to the pan. When the breading turns golden brown, it’s a good idea to check one of the fillets. When the meat inside is a shiny white color and readily flakes, your pan-fried fish is ready to eat. Try this in your breading for added flavour, a sprinkle or two of sea salt, freshly ground pepper, 1 tbsp paprika, 1 tbsp any dried herb or spice and some zest and juice of a lemon (in the egg liquid). But go easy on the lemon, as you can always add more lemon later as desired. Also, be sure to cook the fish in batches so they cook evenly and to avoid breaking of the fillets. Serve with herb rice, pan fried potatoes, salad, coleslaw or cooked vegetable. You will impress even yourself! For the breading, you can also use crumbled regular potato chips or you can try out a flavoured potato chip, such as, salt and vinegar or chili flavoured, but if you do use potato chips, be sure to omit any additional salting.
Here is something else to try when it comes to frying fish…Cooking Your Fish Over Coals. Be sure that the wood is burned down enough to create
coals. The last method for cooking fish on a campfire comes in handy when the fire’s dead and you’re still hungry. Clean the fish, but again leave the skin on to protect the meat. Poke a skewer through the fish lengthwise, and place it directly on top of the hot coals left in
the fire pit. Turn them often to ensure that both sides cook evenly. With this method, it won’t be more than a few minutes before your fish is flaky and ready to enjoy. Another way to cook pan fried fish is to: You will need a cast iron skillet and a lid and an orange or oranges for a larger pan. Slice orange(s) thickly. Lay them on the bottom of a large skillet or frying pan. Lay the fish on top of the oranges. Sprinkle the fish with salt and pepper. Heat the pan until the orange slices begin to sizzle. Add
water to the pan until the water is level with the top of the orange slices. Cover the pan. Cook for about 10-15 minutes or until the fish is done. Cooking time will vary widely depending on your fish, your fire and your cookware - so keep a close eye on things! You'll know the fish is done when it smells good, when it is opaque (solidly colored, no longer transparent) and when it flakes easily when you prod it with a fork. If you are looking for places to secure your catch, try some of these sites in Northern Ontario and enjoy your selfprepared cuisine. There are hundreds of lakes and lodges to plan your fishing trip for a day or a week. Some of the best fishing in experienced in what is known as Sunset Country, beautiful northern Ontario that we are so privileged to have at our doorstep! Just google ontariosunsetcountry.ca and see
how many places are available for you and your families to enjoy! Personally? I like my fish pan fried! The dinner bell is ringing! Have to go now!

5 tips for stress-free summer air travel (NC) Summer is peak travel season and airports from coast to coast are bursting at the seams. Whether flying for business or pleasure, make your air travel experience go smoothly with these five expert tips from Roch Lefebvre, seasoned traveller and services director for Air Canada: 1. Take a breather, and think before packing. Most people bring too much, but for-

itinerary including name spelling, date, time, seat assignment etc., are correct to avoid delays — or worse, a missed flight. Also make sure to enter your frequent flyer card info when you purchase your ticket,
and check that the name on your passport and points card match up so you don't miss out on those miles. 4. Take advantage of online services. When you buy your ticket, select your meal-type preference and indicate any dietary restrictions so you know you'll have something you can eat on the plane. Another time-saver is checking in online up to 24 hours before departure and selecting your seats before arriving at the airport. An electronic boarding pass will be sent to your email or phone that you can use to get through security and board the plane. 5. Above all, relax, use common sense and enjoy your travels knowing that at Air Canada safety is first and last, all the time. When you see the red maple leaf on the aircraft tail, you know you're one step from home. Roch Lefebvre has been flying with Air Canada for nine years and specializes in coaching his peers on Air Canada's new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which flies to international destinations including Brisbane, Copenhagen, Delhi, Dubai, Frankfurt, Istanbul, London Heathrow, Madrid, Tel Aviv, Tokyo (Narita and Haneda airports), Seoul and Zurich this summer. www.newscanada.com
