The course is in great condition and members are excited to have players at this level competing on their home course;” says Craig Morton Director of Golf. “Having a Mackenzie Tour - PGA TOUR Canada event in our community assists in growing the game at Fort William Country Club and all of the golf courses throughout the region.” In addition to the Monday Qualifier details, the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel announced a number of exemptions into the tournament field. The Thunder Bay District Golf Association was awarded two exemptions for local and

regional golfers. The first exemption will be awarded at the regional qualifier on June 11th, at Whitewater Golf Course, while the second will be announced following the District Open, which will be a two-day event on July 2nd at Whitewater Golf Course and July 3rd at Fort William Country Club. President of the Thunder Bay District Golf Association, Hank Wilke, says; “The Thunder Bay District Golf Association is thrilled to receive two exemptions for the Staal Foundation Open to be used for local and regional players. The exemptions create hype and interest amongst local golfers, especially the juniors. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for local golfers to compete against some of the best up and comers in the world on their path to the PGA TOUR.” Thunder Bay golfer Evan DeGrazia has had the opportunity to play in the Staal Foundation Open for the last two years. He explains how his experience has really helped excel his career. “Golf is a passion of mine and so receiving an exemption to play in last year’s Staal Foundation Open

Evan Degrazia, US College Golfer was an incredible experience. Having the opportunity to represent Thunder Bay and play against some of the best was a highlight of my golf career. The Staal Foundation Open definitely motivates young people to get involved in the game and gives those that are already invested a chance to take it to the next level.” DeGrazia adds that he has been working hard on his game and that he will definitely try to qualify for this year’s event.

Staal Foundation Open Executive Director Scott Smith, also announced some celebrities that will be in attendance. Returning for his second round and given the first sponsorship exemption, hockey hall-offamer Grant Fuhr will tee up with the tournament and play in the Porter Celebrity Pro-Am. “I’m so excited to be coming back to Thunder Bay. Last year’s event was so well organized and the people and the hospitality in Thunder Bay were second to none. To be given another opportunity to compete against some of the best up and coming players in the world is such an honor. I have a great deal of respect for these players as the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada is incredibly strong. I look forward to the competition this summer. I’m also thrilled about a little old fashion road hockey game. Thunder Bay is a big Hockey Town;” said Fuhr, who will also play in the Celebrity Pro-Am on the Monday of the weeklong event. Among some of the new attendees at this years event will be Thunder Bay’s very own Northern Ontario skip Krista McCarville, former NHLer Dave Poulin and former NHL goalie Trevor Kidd. These three celebrity guests will also be attending the Porter Celebrity Pro-Am. The 2016 Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel is being hosted at Whitewater

Golf Course from July 11th to July 17th. Opening round of this year’s official tournament play begins on Thursday July 14th. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for Monday, followed by the Pandora Intercity Summer Classic and the Porter Celebrity Pro-Am. A full schedule of activities is available online at: staalopen.ca. Evan Degrazia “ Playing in the Staal Open will be instrumental going forward and just getting to play with the best players across North America and the World shows you where your game has to be to compete.” “ Last year was a good year for me. It wasn’t what I wanted as a result but helped me to deal with the crowds. Golf is such as individual sport. You usually practice by yourself so having the crowd there is different. There is a lot of pressure for one round for a qualifier.” “ It has been good going to school in South Carolina and being able to play all year round and practice every day is great This summer will be a lot of hard work . I am determined to make the cut this year. My goal is to play professional golf. Step 1 is to get status on the PGA Tour Canada and then go frorm there.” Evan is 21years old and attends Newberry College. Hank Wilke, President of TBDGA “ The Staal Open has given us 2 spots. The first spot is available June 11 as a qualifier. It gives some of our more serious golfers the motivation to work on their game and like Evan was saying it is quite the thrill to play in this event. The next event is July 2 and 3rd at FWCC and Whitewater. The other option is to play in July 11 as the Monday qualifier.

Great Outdoors Now that the snow has melted, the countdown to summer is on. Today at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, representatives from both the Staal Foundation Open, presented by Tbaytel, and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation announced a much anticipated event that will make the weeks leading up to this year’s tournament that much more exciting. Announced this morning were details on how children residing in Northwestern Ontario can enter a brand-new contest for a chance to play with the Staals as part of #TeamStaal2016 at the Pandora Intercity Summer Classic; a new road hockey event to be held on July 11 at 11 a.m. at Whitewater Golf Course, directly following the Opening Ceremonies of the Staal Foundation Open. “The contest is made up

of two parts,” explained Lindsay Doran, ePhilanthropy Officer, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. “In the first part, we’re asking children aged 9 to 14 to submit a video of them showing off their very best street hockey move. This portion of the contest is open now and will run until May 23 at 9 a.m. A gallery of videos is available for viewing on www.staalopen.ca and the top 20 highest voted entrants will move on to the second portion of the contest.” Continued Doran, “On May 25, the fundraising challenge begins! The top 20 highest voted entrants will have an online fundraising page created for them by the Health Sciences Foundation and they need to fundraise as much as they can for the Northern Cancer Fund. For every $20 raised, the child will receive one ballot for the chance to play with the Staals. The more money raised, the better the chances.”

On June 10, the Health Sciences Foundation will announce #TeamStaal2016. The top 3 fundraisers are guaranteed a spot to play in the Pandora Intercity Summer Classic with the Staals, while the additional 2 spots will be randomly drawn from the ballots collected by the remaining 17 fundraisers. "We are really looking forward to the Pandora Intercity Summer Classic Road Hockey Game in Thunder Bay at the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel and the opportunity to have local kids play on Team Staal. I think sometimes we forget what we thought of hockey as kids and how exciting it was to meet our hockey heroes. Now having kids of my own, it's always important to me and my brothers to give these kids memories and give back to our community," said Eric Staal of the New York Rangers. "This will be an experience these kids won't forget. We look forward to seeing all of the road hockey moves in the contest submissions

and we challenge kids to really show us what they've got." “The Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel is thrilled to partner with the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation on the initiative announced today,” said Mike Tallari, Staal Foundation Open, Director of Corporate Development. “This year’s event is really about creating a space where everyone can play. The #TeamStaal2016 contest is a once in a lifetime opportunity for kids to meet and play with their hockey heroes and we can’t wait to see who gets drafted to the teams.” Full contest details, including how to enter and vote, are available at www.staalopen.ca/teamstaal. A video invitation, from Marc and Eric Staal, to be part of #TeamStaal2016 is available at bit.ly/staal2016

Aveo Riding Big and Tall Wave ROGERS, AR - Aveo, the golf clothing manufacturer dedicated to big and tall men, appears to be a trend-setter in golf. Servicing this market segment is now seemingly all the rage, according to a recent article in fashion staple Women's Wear Daily. On March 15, the iconic publication ran an article about a popular modeling agency that's hiring big and tall male models, and creating a new more marketable term to describe the plus-size men's category: brawn. Officials claim that the term has a positive message pertaining to physical strength.

Other popular magazines have recently used plus-sized female models to showcase the likes of bathing suits, and now it's time for their male counterparts to be in the spotlight. One member of this new breed of male models said in the article that for work, he's required to dress fashionably yet he has size issues, and that while he doesn't consider himself obese, certain stores don't carry his size. "It's about time that other people join our cause and understand the dilemma of finding fashionable clothing," says Aveo cofounder Darius Hicks. "Hey, we all want to wear nice, stylish clothes that look good on us. I love that big and tall men are becoming more in the spotlight."

Aveo golf clothing is currently available at Haggin Oaks, Golfdom stores and online at the websites of Dick's Sporting Goods, Golfsmith, TGW, Austad's, kingparsuperstore.com, rockbottomgolf.com. Carl's Golfland and Golf Town Canada, as well as at Aveogolf.com. FRIENDSHIP TRUMPS CYCLING Two wheel power can transforms you – JUST PEDAL! My mantra has supported me through many head winds and long hilly roads. To overcome health issues many years ago, I dusted off my old race bicycle and started riding to work. My friend from work Lynn Duffield and I put on many miles including riding the Historic William Munger Trail out of Duluth, Minnesota. It is not always been easy to find the time

two. I can now ride near 200 kilometers in eight hours. This is my yearly goal to ride from Sioux Lookout to Dryden, round trip. Your body can stand almost anything. It’s your mind that you have to convince. This is especially true as we grow older and have to get smarter how we seek wellness and adventure. Do things right. Check with your doctor if appropriate, research the

or to have good riding weather. I still remember at the beginning of my return to cycling, pedaling one stroke and resting

kind of biking that suits you and the type of bicycle for your riding needs. Proper safety equipment and rules are a given. I

Page 4

have learned the hard way. Like any sport, skill, knowledge and proper equipment go a long way in preventing injury. This age thing often forces us to keep reinventing ourselves. It is even more successful when you meet someone who shares your outlook. Such a person is my friend John MacKenzie. We met a number of years ago planning a lifelong learning conference at Lakehead University. Now we terrorize roadways, parks and coffee shops within a hundred kilometers of Thunder Bay. Although I may ride the 100 kilometer ride for Cancer in September and John does the 75 kilometer loop, I cherish our rides together. Every year he is getting better and I am motivated to get out riding or be left behind. We are Road Bikers, meaning we ride on pavement only. Please give us a wave if you see us. Please share the road with us. If you think the road is bad where you are driving, it is usually much worse along the curb. We are often concentrating on finding a safe path forward parallel to the right side of the road. Pot holes, stones, glass,

dirt, sewer gratings, honking horns and never mind vehicles speeding by all represent potential dangers that a cyclist must simultaneously process. I would like to thank those drivers who will maintain a minimum distance of one metre, where practical, when passing cyclists on highways. Just moving closer to the centre line adds reassurance to a cyclist. I would also like to congratulate those working at making our city and region a people-powered place to live. It saves everyone on health costs and contributes to reduced energy expenses. I hope I will be soon giving you a friendly wave or thumbs up as you pass me. If I don’t I am probably concentrating on my cycling and the engine that drive it. JUST PEDAL! David G. Farrell BA CEC

FISHING FOR SMALLMOUTH BASS By Sherry Aalto Smallmouth Bass are considered one of the best fighting, fresh water fish in all of Northern Ontario. It is said that it takes some skill and luck to land a 6, 7 or 8 - pound smallmouth bass because, pound for pound, you will feel the fight in your line to the end! A two - pound smallmouth bass fights like is a 10 pounder and not giving you an inch! A vicious fighter to the end! Smallmouth bass fishing is a major sport in Northern Ontario, especially in Sunset Country! Sunset Country is located in Northwestern Ontario, Canada and is bordered to the south by Minnesota and to the west by Manitoba and Eastern border just West of Thunder Bay.

The largest fresh water lake in North America, bordering Canada and United States is Lake Superior and measures – 82,414 km2 (31,820 sq mi). Some of the next largest lakes are Lake of the Woods, Lac Seul, Eagle Lake, and Rainy Lake. Despite the fact that these 4 lakes are huge, there are many islands and bays making the lakes almost always navigable. The many smaller lakes are fabulous as well. You can drive to many of them or fly-in to one and be the only party on the lake. When it comes to lures and bait for securing your catch, according avid anglers, here are three lures that work well when fishing for Smallmouth Bass. The Heddon Spook with its noisy rattles,

secured by a ball bearing swivel. The bait's head offers a realistic target with its 3D eyes and bright red flaring gills. Light, .035 gauge wire is tuned for maximum vibration and easily retuned after each bite. Also suggested is the YUM Craw Papi. Smallmouths never turn down a crayfish meal and the limber, flapping motion of this bait's large, thin

deep runner's flat-sided profile helps it dig down and reaches 14-18 feet (with No. 2 hooks). The Fat Free Shad has a tight, enticing action that tempts hard-toreach smallmouths, while the Excalibur Tx3 Rotating treble hooks keep fish buttoned up. There are at least fifteen great lures for catching Smallmouth Bass so it is important to speak with the experts at

You haven’t lived until you have fished in the fresh water lakes and streams of Sunset Country Ontario! You can plan a great fishing trip to almost anywhere in the Sunset Country area. There are many, many lodges that will accommodate you and any number of guests in your party. If you so desire, there is everything from remote and rugged to full conveniences for your fishing experience. Guided tours or just on your own, the choice yours!

Fishing in Sunset Country is considered one of life’s greatest pleasures because one great thing about this region is that the smallmouth bass is not just your traditional early morning breakfast bite. It is usually an all-day affair. In Sunset Country, you can do the early a.m. bite, come in for breakfast, re-group or even have a little morning nap and then head out again to mid- day to locate areas that offer not only a good bite, but the opportunity to inspire bigger bass when the sun is at its peak. There are over 70,000 lakes, river and streams in Northwest Ontario. Whether you are flying into a small remote lake or heading out on a bigger lake, like Rainy Lake Region, the water will be clear and clean. And with so many lakes around, your water activities are endless. You can go boating, fishing, paddle boarding, wake boarding, canoeing, kayaking or just plain old swimming! The scenery alone is amazing! The blue of the fresh waters, the green of the timberlands and marsh lands, combined with the beauty of the sun, offer a feast for your eyes from dawn until dusk. And then you may also bask in the ambiance of the billions of stars that come out to see you in the midnight hour! The moon on the other hand, will offer you true illumination of light and here in Sunset Country, there is no light pollution that penetrates through so you will enjoy its beauty even more.

Either way, fishing in Northern Ontario is an experience you can’t afford to miss out on! Check out Sunset Country on google and then plan your trip and catch your share of this great fighting fish…The Smallmouth Bass!

Add eye-catching design trends to outdoor spaces this summer (NC) Outdoor living continues to evolve, as Canadians are expanding their living spaces into the front and backyards at an increasing rate. Design enthusiasts are always looking to industry experts to discover what's new and hot in outdoor design. Here to share some of this year's latest outdoor design trends is Sharon Grech, a colour and design expert for Benjamin Moore.

Bring indoor luxe outside: Glamourous, multi-functional and classic are all key traits to keep in mind when updating the interior of the home, and the same applies for outside. “Outdoor living spaces are an extension of the home,” says Grech. “Creating backyard living rooms with sectionals and coffee tables, and front yard grand entrances with stunning

doors and accessories is the new norm. Install shutters, add more trim around windows or switch out the hardware

on your front or back door for something more sophisticated. It's the little updates that have the biggest impact and will bring the flow from your home's interior to the exterior.”

Design more with less: This year, it's all about simplicity in design.

Eliminate clutter and select sleek furniture to achieve a minimalistic look. Go through outdoor furniture and don't be afraid to get rid of the items that don't serve a purpose. Throw out patio chairs, tables or accessories that are old and clunky. Use only a few select varieties of flowers in the garden and keep garden accessories to a minimum.

Crete Countryside from Benjamin Moore.

Go contemporary with pops of colour: Although designers often share their favourite neutrals, it's crucial to strategically add pops of colour to any space. Light, airy shades and dynamic jewel tones are the go-to palettes this year. Incorporate these trendy colour schemes not only with accessories, but try painting architectural features like the front or back door. To easily add a trendy splash of colour to your doors, Grech recommends English Scone or

More information is available at www.benjaminmoore.ca.

For best results, Grech suggests using a premium paint designed for doors, such as Aura Grand Entrance, which is specially formulated to retain colour integrity and gloss and is easy to apply.

How to get your kids geared up for camping • Bring a digital camera and take lots of pictures. Those dirt-covered faces will make some great pictures to send to the rest of the family.

(NC) Did you know that a whopping 62% of Canadians say they are planning to camp this summer? No wonder. Enthusiasts insist that vacations in the great outdoors are a great way to make memories that will last a lifetime even if you're staying on home soil and working with a tight budget. Here's a guideline to make sure this is a summer your children will never forget: • Treat your kids with their own gear. They'll get excited about things like sleeping bags and chairs featuring their favourite characters and flashlights in their favourite colours. Earn bonus points by letting them pick it out themselves. • Let the kids help to plan meals and

snacks for the trip, then prepare everything in advance. They'll look forward to eating their favourite foods, and your onsite work will be minimal. • Go on a family adventure walk. Make it a game like a forest scavenger hunt, so you can explore nature together and get some exercise at the same time. • Let them get dirty. Explore the trails and mud patches around the campground.

Keep in mind that 47% of Canadian campers agree that most camping essentials require batteries, so be sure to stock up on reliable ones. Energizer tells us that their long-lasting Recharge battery line will not only keep your camera, flashlights, and everything else, charged all trip long, but these are the world's first that are made from 4% recycled batteries. Using them will minimize our impact on landfill giving everyone an opportunity to do their part in protecting the beautiful Canadian landscapes for future generations of campers. www.newscanada.com

Foster some hoop dreams with your generosity Foster some hoop dreams with your generosity (NC) Although Canada has long been known as a hockey nation — with formidable athletes and dedicated fans — in recent years, basketball has battled for the spotlight. Have you become a fan? If not yet, there's a good chance you will be. The young talent surging out of Canada culminated with our nation's first ever number-one NBA draft pick in 2013, so it's no surprise that more Canadian kids are picking up basketballs.

For young players, however, the pursuit of success is often expensive. The cost of coaching, camps, and tournaments can lead to hard choices for financially disadvantaged families.

involved in organized sport and physical activity. One of those kids was Juevol Myles.

“Support is available, however, if you know where to look,” says Landon French, president of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Jumpstart works overtime to help give kids the resources they need to play their favourite sports.” Last year alone, he explains, Jumpstart helped nearly 8,000 kids play basketball. Since 2005, the charity has helped over 1million children across Canada get

ter, Juevol graduated from the University of South Dakota with a degree in psychology and is currently pursuing his Master's degree. He also continues to play professionally in Europe.” It's easy to see that playing sports equips kids for life – and it allows them to pursue their dreams both on and off the court. Advisers remind us that sport teaches kids important life skills – like discipline, confidence and teamwork – and that can lead to life-changing opportunities like post-secondary education.

After losing his father when he was only three, Juevol and his two siblings were raised by their single mother in Ajax, Ontario. He fell in love with basketball after watching his older brother Jermaine play. Hard work on the court led to success and Juevol was selected to play for the Canadian Junior Team. Unfortunately, the costs of taking his game to the next level became unmanageable for his family.

Did you know that June is Canadian Tire Jumpstart Month and you can support the initiative at your local store by donating to give others the gift of play? One hundred per cent of customer donations stay in the community to give kids like Juevol the chance to get off the sidelines and into the game. If you know a kid who wants to play, but is unable to because of costs, call 1-844-YES-PLAY or visit jumpstart.canadiantire.ca.

“That's when Juevol's coach introduced him to Jumpstart,” French points out. “It helped him cover the costs of his necessary training and camps – and this support soon led to a scholarship to play NCAA Division I Basketball. Even bet-

Prince Arthur’s Landing Wins a prestigious, province wide design award… Design Excellence BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

Great Outdoors Prince Arthur’s Landing just nabbed a prestigious, province wide design award… Design Excellence at the 2016 Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) Awards. Since opening, the site has seen 5 times the number of users (100,000 annually) and the creation of 9 new local businesses. Toon Dreessen is the President of OAA Have you seen the site? “ I had an opportunity to visit Prince Arthur’s Landing several times last summer and really enjoyed it. You can see the area is quite beautiful and the development is having a good impact on the community with people using it. I am really excited it has won an award.” What is the award all about? “ The award is a design excellence award. It is more than the building is beautiful or existed on its own but about how the building functions, its meaning and impact on a broader community. Does it make good business sense, is there something of value to the building and how does it support better architecture in its community and have a broader social impact that is positive.” Why did this project win an award? “ We can see the Prince Arthur's Landing in its context with the marina, the outdoor ampitheatre and the history of everything in the area. It is having a positive impact by bringing tourism and businesses to the area and developing a broader impact. There has been a five fold increase in visitors to the area and 9 new businesses.” “ The investment has been municipally driven with a master plan and the impact of the investment has had a

Page 8

broad impact. The small seed investment has had a larger impact with more tourists and residential development. People see the value of architecture investment. The long term impact gives a massive increase over the life cycle of the buildings. The master plan for all the buildings fit together and will continue to happen.” These awards to open to any OAA member firm. They had submissions this year from mostly Ontario, but also Kamloops, Surrey, Montreal,

Vancouver, two from Edmonton Russia and the Middle East. There were 185 submissions this year, and 20 were short listed as really spectacular. Of those 20, 10 were given awards. “ Prince Arthur's Landing is a world class project and special . I think it is fantastic and I absolutely loved it. It fits with in its context beautifully. The overall harmonization of the site is reflective of aboriginal culture.”
