Great Outdoors The 84th Annual Slate River Plowing Match were held September 9and 10th at Highway #130 and Piper Road in Oliver-Paipoonge Township just outside of Thunder Bay. This very fun event offers harvest demos in binding, stooking, threshing and grain grinding. There is a ploughing competition, antique tractors as well as brand new tractors, and a tractor rodeo. Live music is played, there are many food vendors, kids play area and people movers! Rural Heritage Days shows off the farming lifestyle right at the doorstep of urban Thunder Bay and is really worth a visit each September. My favourite part of the event is talking to the people who work or have worked
in the farm industry. They are a very genuine group who seem to really enjoy their work and lifestyle. The first plowing match in the Slate River Valley was held October 12th,1927.The ploughs then were all horse driven. No matchs were held from 1940 to 1945 during the war but
have been held ever since. Todays four wheel drive tractor can plow 45 acres of land in a day which is far different thanthe earlier machines on display. You should make plans to attend next years event in September!

Brandon Schmidt, age 23, is a Professional Snowboarder and BMX Rider from Stockholm, New Jersey “ I grew up loving to ride bikes, skateboards or whatever and watching Nitro Circus. I told myself from a little kid on I was going to be part of Nitro Circus. So I had to decide do I go to college or find a job. I made an edit of my riding, sent it Nitro Circus and within 2 days I got an offer to come to New Zealand and tryout. I got a job offer and now 4 years later have been all around the world with my childhood hero Travis Pastrana- it blows my mind.” “ I will ride BMX and snowboard with wheels on it. People want to come out to see
something that has never been done before. If there is injury my drive is to get back as soon as possible. It is the love, passion and the willing to progress in the sport.” Ricky Melnik is the Athlete Performer Manager with the Nitro Circus. “ Thunder Bay is our 28th stop out of 39 on our North American Tour. The B-TX series is for low elevation boondockers who want a 153” track length and a narrower skistance than traditional deep snow mod-
els, but with the sea-level clutching and moderate lug height to tackle the trails when required. At the heart of the Sidewinder is the diabolical all new Genesis 998T which has made the Sidewinder the new production snowmobile HP king. The turbo comes factory-installed from Yamaha’s facilities in Japan and delivers top of the class performance with the reliability customers have come to expect from Yamaha. ATV’s! You’ll Be Home By Suppertime! By Sherry Aalto ATV’s can be a lot of fun for the whole family, but when it comes right down to it, it is still a motorized piece of machinery that weighs approximately 400 and more lbs. and should be used with safety in mind. As the autumn draws nearer, enthusiasts for the great outdoors will be prepping there rides for hitting the trails for hunting, exploring or just challenging a trail. Speaking of trails, as one man puts it when I asked him what would be the best piece of advice you could give to ATV riders and his response was, “get information about the area you are going to be four wheeling in before you go out blazing!” “Especially if you are going to be having young children with you!” Area topography maps can provide you with some of the grade levels and obstructions for access such as steep hills, rivers, creeks, inland lakes and ponds. If you are on a tiny trail, you want to make sure you venture ahead on foot a bit, because sometimes the trail runs out and there is nowhere to turn around if you are
on a cliff side of a bluff. It can and does happen! I am sure there are a lot of stories out there that would make a brave man shiver! Now ATV’s were the craze way back in the 60’s but the first ATV as we know it, emerged as a 3-wheeler. The Sperry-Rand Tricart was designed in 1967 and manufactured in 1968. However, it was the Honda ATC that made 3-wheelers a household name and set the path for today's ATV. In 1970, Honda introduced their US90 or ATC90 (All Terrain Cycle). But just for argument sake, here is another piece of interesting information you might like. In 1899, Royal Enfield were producing a quadricycle – a bicycle modified by adding a wrap-around four-wheeled frame, retaining a rear rider-saddle with handlebars – having a front-mounted passenger seat, driven by a rear-mounted De Dion engine. When purchasing an ATV for the first time, here are some suggested tips to consider before making your commitment to your purchase: Consider the age and experience of the ATV's primary rider. ATVs come in all shapes and sizes. It's important to match the right features with the rider for a more
enjoyable ATV experience. Is the rider a youth, beginner adult or adult with other power sports equipment experience? There are youth vehicles on the market available for children as young as 6, and adult-only vehicles that come with different power options. Be sure to not overdo it on your first purchase. There's always the option to upgrade power and performance down the line. * Weigh how the ATV will be used. ATVs, generally, can be broken into two separate categories - sport or utility. Sport quads have a sportier look and feel, and are more suited for recreational or high-performance riding. Utility ATVs, such as the Polaris Sportsman ETX, offer four-wheel drive and are capable of carrying loads, towing, plowing and performing other tasks. Some vehicles combine a mixture of these attributes. * Consider the terrain where you'll be riding. Will it be hard-packed trails, fields, mud, sand or steep hills? If you will be riding mostly on tough terrain such as deep mud or steep hills, a four-wheel drive ATV, with its enhanced traction, would probably be better suited and make for a more enjoyable riding experience. For regular trails and field riding, two-wheel drive mode would probably suffice. If riding in highly rutted or rocky terrain, an ATV with electronic power steering might be the best bet to help reduce handlebar feedback and rider fatigue. * How many riders will your ATV need to carry and how? While everyone is aware of the typical straddle ATV for one person, there also are ATVs specifically designed to carry a driver and passenger for double the fun. Known as '2-Up' ATVs, the vehicles feature a longer chassis with a second seat behind the driver. * Do you prefer a steering wheel and pedal controls? Recently, there has been a new 'style' of ATV. A single-seat, sit-in ATV with a steering wheel and a cage for more comfort, confidence and capability might be what you have in mind? There are ATV’s that offer a unique way for both novice and experience riders to hit the trail. * Are you prepared to play safely? Safety is always an important consideration when purchasing an ATV. Enrolling in a safety training course before making a purchase will get you acclimated to riding an ATV. The ATV Safety Institute offers safety courses nationwide to help you become a more safe and aware rider. * Finally, how much do you want to spend?
Page 6
There is an ATV available to fit virtually any pocketbook. It is important to research the various features available to find a machine that fits your budget, riding style, work expectation and experience. Entrylevel ATVs offer features needed for the first-time buyer and are easy on the pocketbook. Skilled riders looking for more power might opt for a full-size value model. For heavy-duty work or riding, most manufacturers offer full-size, premium models with bigger engines. Whatever your choice, there is an ATV just right for almost anyone! In the Thunder Bay Region, there are many ATV trails to be enjoyed. These off-road excursions are particularly scenic in the autumn, so don’t forget to bring your camera and maybe a lunch. As with any public area, please be sure to not leave any refuse upon your exit and also, bring water to drink, the sunny afternoons can get hot in the bush areas it is always wise to stay hydrated. Be sure to let others know where you are going and bring a GPS and a communication device as well, just in case of getting lost or mechanical breakdown. Some small tools are also a good idea and a flashlight, some water proof matches and some extra warm wear, if possible. This seems like a lot but remember, you need to have safety first and you will be off the main stream for a bit. Here is a great site to google for your ATV experience http://www.northernontario.travel/atving/atv -trails-in-ontario. Some popular manufacturers of ATV’s are Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki. Check out your local Sports and Cycle shops in Thunder Bay or you can also check out used ATV’s online. If you choose to do the latter, be sure to get all pertinent information about the vehicle. ATV riding opens up a world that has you craving for more time to spend riding. ATV Clubs are in your area! Check them out and get in on the fun! It is for the whole family and requires no gaming apps or controls! Just thought I had to put that in there!
There is a lot of nature and changing of the seasons out there to be enjoyed and there is a means to do it with! You’ll be back home by suppertime!

Hank Wilke Wins Thunder Bay District Amateur In Playoff BY SCOTT A. SUMNER
Great Outdoors The 2016 Thunder Bay District Amateur was an exciting event with a dramatic 3 hole playoff that had 58
Brett Shewchuk, age 24 “ I played fine but Hank was just on fire pretty much the last 10 holes minus 18. He made 5 birdies in 10
holes and I played it 2 over. He made a great par the second time on 18 in the playoff. My swing on 17 was just a bad swing. I was just trying to be aggressive. ” Brett will be going to Niagara College this fall and playing on the
golf team there.
year old Hank Wilke win over 24 year old Brett Shewchuk. Hank Wilke, age 58 “ I didn’t think it would be possible to win but I had one of those rounds where everything went right on the back nine. The front wasn’t so great. I made some putts and chips, hit the ball really well and am quite happy with that. I felt relaxed when I made the birdies on the back nine because Brett was 5 shots up coming into the last 9 holes. I felt I had nothing to lose but the next thing you know you are only 2 behind.” “ I pulled the driver on 18 and I say every time I lay up I screw up, so I figured I could keep it going. There was one mechanical thing that makes me leak it to the right side and is part of the pressure coming down 18. We all go through that at some times. The more you play the more you get a feel for the shots. That is the challenge, having the energy to come out and play all the time.”
