Levi Lavallee Enjoys the Sport of Snowmobiling BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

Great Outdoors This is the 25th Anniversary of the Duluth race Levi? “ It is always a exciting time come Thanksgiving. I been up here at Duluth since 1997 my first year racing and even coming the years before that with my dad. The races just keep getting better and better and this 25th Anniversary of the Duluth National, it is pretty awesome. We we worried about would they be able to make enough snow but they bring us the biggest track we have ever seen here so that was pretty incredible.” “ I remember the early days with the hay bails and the jumps of 3 or 4 feet tall to what it is today. It is cool to look back with riders likeToni Haikonen, Blair Morgan, Kirk Hibbert and so on and has been fun to see in person.” Kyle Pallin is back again this season? “ We are excited to have Kyle on the team. He has done an exceptional job on and off the track. It is really fun to have a guy as positive as he is just to keep everyone upbeat. The snocross is a business for us. It costs money to run these semis down the road, but it is like a family. You are on the road together and pretty much do everything together. It is a tight knit family.”

Page 2

Do you have time to do some trail riding anymore Levi? “I took a little spin snowmobiling a few weeks ago at home when the snow came. Last year I went to the UP of Michigan and took the trail sleds. We had a ball there for weekend. I really enjoy just riding like this. Since I was 15 until a few years ago I wasn’t able to just trail ride. It reignites the passion for snowmobiling. I like racing but it is stressful at times.” How long do think a rider can race snocross? " Kirk Hibbert raced until he was in his 40’s and I am not sure how long

Tucker will continues racing but if he does for another 5 or 6 years it would be great for our sport. It helps having him on the track.” This past Haydays you did a special jump? “ The jump at Haydays, the 50th Anniversary was great. My first time there I was 6 years old with my dad. It is an amazing event. I said I could do a distance jump for the 50th so they laid out kinda where we could do it and where I could get the speed necessary to do the distance. I wanted all of 70 MPH and just got there. There was a head wind so we had to post-

pone, a little delay and then went for it. I could feel the wind up there. Typically you hit the brake once to bring her down but I had to hit the brake twice because the front end didn’t come down enough. It was exciting to make it work. At the beginning we had only 66 or 67 MPH so we built a little ramp. I be back at X Games with Freestyle and possibly Best Trick. I will try.” .

ferent than last year, a few things with the same motor but they are trying to make it better.

Tim Tremblay races for Scheuring Speedsports on Ski Doo and is from Drummondville, Quebec, Canada located 1 hour from Valcourt. He finished second in the ISOC Pro Open points last season.

In the summertime Tim races 450 motocross including 1 AMA National and Regional and Canadian races for a total of 18 races.

BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

“ Last year started really well. I won the Dominator again and my first National of the season. Over Christmas I got hurt pretty bad practicing with a bad crash. I didn’t think I would make it for the rest of the season but worked through it being injured until the last round, but was still able to get second in the championship,”said Tim. “ This year I want to stay healthy and not do that mistake again."

The past season and again this year Tim will have Blair Morgan as a coach.

“ Blair is helping me himself and with his old trainer. We are working together now ,talking to me to make sure I am ready including with the spirit, the mental part of it and some race lines. He had a such a good career and was such a smart rider so it is amazing to get some help from him.”

Tim Tremblay moves back and forth from Aurora,MN the team headquarters, to his house in Quebec because he has kids at home and doesn’t want to stay away from them too long. He flys back and forth.

“ I just turned 30 and my fitness is the best ever. I feel really good. Your fitness program gets better every year, the only thing is when you get older your recovery time if injured gets longer with more time needed. I do feel like a young guy,” smiles Tim. “ I want to win everytime you go out. Tucker is tough competition but it would be nice to get a Championship again. Our team is the best Ski Doo team for sure and one of the best teams on the circuit. Everyone works hard and it should be good this year.”

The Ski Doo sleds are pretty good this year according to Tremblay, a little bit dif-

ISOC President Carl Schubitzke Impressed With Duluth I had a brief conversation with Isoc President Carl Schubitzke at the Duluth opener. How do you like the Duluth 25th Anniversary track? “ The track is amazing- you have to give credit to the Spirit Mountain snowmaking crew. When you see in three days how much snow they made it is impressive. It is the largest track Duluth has ever seen. It is sunny out, 40 degrees which is kinda weird, but we are excited to be here. You have to make the race happen this weekend. People come from all over the world

and maybe next week may not be able to come. We do what ever we can to pull it off.”

You have two new venues this year at ISOC?

2017 Chevrolet Silverado!

“ Winterpark,Colorado is at about 8500 to 9000 feet. It is a new market for us and we haven’t been to Colorado so we are pumped for that. The snow conditions will be really good.” “Dubuque, Iowa is also new and the whole city is behind it with a lot of excitement. It might be a sleeping giant. The people there are our crowd and market.” Its nice to get the season started! “ It is good to be racing, once it gets in your blood it is hard to give up. I am excited for the Pro Open final and there are a lot of guys that can do well. Who has trained well and who will be the

10 Time Snocross Champion Tucker Hibbert! BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

Great Outdoors It is always fun talking to Tucker in his race trailer at the Duluth Opener. We covered a wide range of topics this year.

The 2015/16 season was a good one for you. Did you achieve your goals Tucker? “ Last year was great. I was able to win the ISOC championship and the X Games again which were my two main goals. We won a lot of races and had a lot of fun.” You had an injury last season that affected your summer schedule? “ Last year near the end of the snocross season I had a wrist injury but was able to keep racing with a brace and by being a little more careful. We finished the season strong, so was happy about that. Through the summer I worked on two torn ligaments.” “ Summer was not what I wanted like racing motocross and mountain bike as I was focused on healing my wrist and getting it strong. It is part of racing, you have to take the good with the bad and deal with it. In my career I have had a few injuries. Pretty much every racer out here is dealing with some kind of injury and is not 100 % riding through some pain. It is part of being a professional athlete.” The new 2017 Arctic Cat race sled has some big changes? “ The Arctic Cat sled has a new engine package for us this year with the 600

CTEC engine with the EFI fuel injection system. It is new and exciting for us and something I think we will see some pretty big benefits out of it. Arctic Cat and Speedwerks have teamed up to produce this race version of the engine and it has been a pretty big effort for everyone involved. This weekend we may not use the engine as we would like more testing time. We do feel the EFI will be a lot stronger with more power and just a better race package. Our goal is to be racing that all the time as it will be an improvement. It may just take some time to get her dialed in.” What is your impression of this 25th Anniversary Duluth track? “ Duluth is a bigger track than last year, but unfortunately there isn't a lot of snow which is a disappointment for us. It is kinda hard to ride through gravel and dirt, but longer is better. It will get messy with more racers out there. Our goal is to get out front fast.” The next race on the ISOC schedule is a new one? “ Winterpark, Colorado is a new race for us. We have raced at nearby Aspen for a number of years. The west fans will get a opportunity to see us. The EFI will help there.”

that but at the same time it will be fun to have that happen. You need to battle and competition is what keeps pushing me to be better and improve.” How has snocross changed since you started racing 20 years ago? “ The sport has changed into being more professional and a bigger arena type of

There seems to be some new young fast riders coming up this year? “ There is always someone new coming up. There are a lot of young kids coming up in the Pro Open class this season so it will be exciting. They will be contending for wins. Obviously I want to win every single race and will do everything to do

thing. All the racers are working harder and taking every detail serious to prepare themselves. This is a good thing for the sport for snocross to be the best they can be and put on a good show for the fans.” How has training played a role in the sport? “ Training and being in shape is a big part of being successfull in snowmobile racing so I am focussed on being the best athlete I can be and being prepared for the races.

Page 4

With some new fast guys and me get a little bit older I have to be focused on doing the right things.” “ I could race a long time but you’re prime age is 20 to 25 for this type of a sport but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be competitive. I’m 32 now and feel as competitive as I was at 25, . It is just a matter of being fit and prepared to go rac-

ing. If I do that I think I can keep gong for a few more years.” It seems you have a lot of fun with your 10 team members? “ The team and racing is enjoyable just hanging out with my guys laughing, working hard and celebrating. We are shooting for a lot of celebrating and making memories this season!”

Snocross Legend Blair Morgan Enjoys Coaching BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

Great Outdoors It was last year at Duluth I met with one of the sports best of all time, Blair Morgan. Blair was at the race track for the first time in many years since his motocross accident that left him a paraplegic. He was back at Duluth again this year and enjoying his Ski Doo rider coaching role.

also but crashed. Lincoln Lemieux did well. I think they are all stepping up their games.” “ Elias is in Norway and not on the same program but is still young at 18. He has the raw talent and kinda just bangs around and hangs on. It is really exciting to watch him. “ It is fun be back into it. It is kinda the same just like I never left even though a lot of years have gone by.”

Anniversary Duluth track? ‘The track looks a little longer than before so it should be good racing.

that much. You could jump it better that way and the sleds have changed since then.”

Has the racing changed in your opinion, since the days when you raced? “ Today it seems a lot of the guys try to take it to the next level with the speed, fitness and their comittment. Back in the day some guys would race on Sunday work on Monday kinda thing but today all these do is race all year round with motocross as well.” “For me it was all year round then because I raced motocross. Maybe that was one of my strengths because I raced all year round. Back in the day the sleds were designed to sit down on but because of my motocross background I never sat down

What keeps you busy in the summer months Blair? “ I am involved in my sons soccer coaching and managing as well. We have the family farm. My daughter does dancing so it is really busy looking after the kids. I ride snowmobile at home as much as I can.” Blair is now 41 and stopped racing 8 years ago in 2008.

Above Left Blair Morgan with friend Robbie Malinoski

How did the last year go for you Blair? “ It was an alright year. I went to most of the events helping out the Ski Doo guys. Tim Tremblay had a few injuries but still finished second in the points. The guy is tough as nails. Elias Ishoel was doing well

“It is really cool seeing the people at the chalet. Some of them were 10 years old when I last saw them and now they are grown and have 10 year olds. It s pretty cool that way. Some of the younger kids don’t know you but the older guys do.” What’s your impression of the 25th

Last year I won the Duluth first race as well but then broke my ankle the next day,”said Elias. “ Last night was my first race in Pro Open and I won.Previously I also raced at X Games on the Pro Open sled.” “The Pro Open sled is bigger than last year with more power. It is a harder class but I hope to be up there. My strategy is to ride my snowmobile as much as can and practice a lot.” What did Elias think of the Duluth race track this year? “I like the track. TO ‘Merry CHRISTMAS’ OR TO ‘HAPPY HOLIDAYS’! What’s it going to be? By Sherry Aalto Actually! It really is your choice! But just for argument sake… let’s examine both sides of this question for a moment…o.k. for as long as it takes for you to read this article! Christmas! It is a season all its’ own! Christmas! The most dreaded, the most magical, the loneliest, the happiest, the most romantic, the most expensive times of year!... It is celebrated most everywhere in the world by most everyone in it. People of many different religions, spiritualist, cultures, ages and dialects celebrate this holiday in an amazing number of different ways! But, bear in mind, all who celebrate, do not celebrate in the same way as their neighbors, whether it be in their own town or neighbours of different counties and continents. But having said that, having pureness of heart in the spirit of Christmas is, every bit as vibrant in people in other countries as it is in our own. In other words, we don’t have the monopoly on Christmas and that is great because, just imagine Christmas being the same everywhere in the world??? We would never have the great fortune to experience Christmas of other cultures, which can be most enriching to our souls.

For example, one of the fascinating aspects of Christmas is the Big Happy Fellow we refer to as Santa Claus, or Saint Nick. In other countries, this is what Santa Claus is called…Ready??? Albania – Babadimri, Argentina - Papa Noel, Armenia - Gaghant Baba, Australia Santa Claus, Bahamas - Santa Claus, Belgium - Pere Noel, Bermuda - Santa Claus, Brazil - Papai Noel, United Kingdom - Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Turkey - Noel Baba, just to name a few!!!! Phew!! So! When you think of the different nationalities there are in the world, just think of all the different ways there are to celebrate and say ‘Merry Christmas’! It is no secret that there are mixed emotions about whether to say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays on a lot of different levels but, if you get into strong debate, bordering on argument, then you have lost the spirit. Peace on earth and good will to ALL is what the message of Christmas is, or should be all about. ‘Peace on earth and good will to all men’, as read in verses 8–20 of the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke. The story goes, Shepherds were tending their flocks out in the countryside near Bethlehem, when they were terrified by the appearance of an

angel. The angel explains that he has a message of good news for all people, namely that "Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." After this, a great many more angels appear, praising God with the words "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." Deciding to do as the angel had said, the shepherds travel to Bethlehem, and find Mary and Joseph and the infant… The King James Version of the Bible translates the words of the angels differently from modern versions, using the words "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men" (where the word "men" is used generically to mean "people" or "human beings"). (en.wikipedia.org) Now this brings us full circle to how do we get past the argument of whether to defend Merry Christmas against Happy Holidays. Well, read on please for mere insight and let there be no contempt prior to investigation please. Exerts from Huffington Post Blog: Let’s start with the fact that there are several holidays that fall during December including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice and the newly minted secular HumanLight. They all would like, and deserve to be acknowledged and respected. So! This brings us to the Merry Christmas vs Happy Holiday debate that is not complicated and is solved with basic etiquette. If you know someone is a Christian who is celebrating Christmas, you should say to them ‘Merry Christmas.’ Likewise, say ‘Happy Hanukkah’ to a person you know is Jewish, etc. For example, during the month of Ramadan I say to my Muslim friends ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ because it shows them that I acknowledge their tradition and wish them well as they observe the holy time in their calendar. This courtesy and respect should be part of what it means to live in a pluralistic society and it is easy for all of us to offer to those to whom we are close. However, if you don’t know the spiritual tradition of a co-worker, friend, or stranger in the elevator but wish to offer them a ‘Season’s greeting’ — a simple ‘Happy Holiday’ is not at all an insult or a denigration of Christmas, or any other tradition. It is an appropriate and inclusive salutation that recognizes that there are many ways that people are observing the season and you don’t know enough to be specific. Let’s join the wider circle of the many traditions that make up our country. Besides, any Christian knows that Christmas is not about displays in shopping malls, or capitols, or schools, it is about a spiritual event that we honor most in our families and our homes. As for the merchants that choose to express ‘Happy Holidays’ or Season’s

Page 6

Greeting’, as opposed to Merry Christmas, they claim to do this to recognize all cultures and religions in the world that celebrate Christmas. Some say that the merchants are taking the spirit of Christmas out of Christmas but to them…they are adding in the rest of the world, not just focusing on one concept of Christmas and how it should be expressed. The more the Merrier!! Change can be difficult for some, but change is not always a bad thing. Change can be growth and acceptance. Our children are growing up in a world that expresses ‘Happy Holidays’ rather than Merry Christmas and who cares as long as they carry the spirit of Christmas within them. Families share their memories and break bread together, this and this alone, strengthens the spirit of Christmas within each person who shares together this experience. Christmas has strong religious importance for many Christians, because they consider it the birthday of Jesus Christ. Some Christians even think it’s offensive to say, “Happy holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” But for the most part, the world is now tending to be more easygoing. Many cultures simply view Christmas as another chance to spread cheer, without any religious meaning whatsoever. It’s simply a time to share gifts, spend time with loved ones and rejoice in traditions, such as decorating a Christmas tree together. For others, Christmas isn’t something they celebrate at all, so saying “Happy holidays” is a more general way to wish someone well this time of year. The message that we should all be getting about the birth of Christ (Christmas) is “Peace on earth…good will towards all men”! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Season’s Greetings refers directly to the Christmas Season specifically. Truly, the spirit of Christmas is not diluted in any way when the greeting is said differently…it is just a more universal acknowledgement for ALL the people in the entire world. It is not meant to keep God out; it is meant to bring others in! Attraction rather than Promotion! Embrace it and share your Christmas spirit. The world needs it now more than ever, no matter HOW it is said! TO Merry CHRISTMAS OR TO HAPPY HOLIDAYS! It’s all up to you! Peace on earth…Good will towards all men! Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Season’s Greetings!

FOUNTAIN TIRE ENCOURAGES CANADIANS TO KEEP CALM AND DRIVE ON THIS WINTER BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

Great Outdoors Winter tires proven to be far superior to all-season and all-weather options for winter driving Fountain Tire, one of Canada’s leading tire and automotive service providers wants to ensure that every Canadian is

a resulted reduction of 5 per cent in fuel consumption over the course of a year due to better traction. One element of the study also found that the universal use of winter tires resulted in a 5 per cent decrease in accident victims and 574 fewer road accident injuries per year, proving once again that while winter tires can be cost-savers, they are also key to personal safety as well. Fountain Tire is committed to providing

service retail networks with 161 locations spanning Central and Western Canada from Vaughan, north of Toronto to Victoria, British Columbia. The company is also a leading provider of tires and tirerelated services to commercial truck fleets and off-road vehicles used in the agriculture, oil and gas, mining, and construction sectors. The majority of Fountain Tire managers own equity in their store. This partnership-based business model combines community invested store management with corporate intelligence to provide customers with service they can trust. The company’s shared ownership business model has enabled it to be named among Canada’s “Best Managed Companies” every year since 1994. Darcy Hunter, Owner and General Manager of Fountain Tire Thunder Bay

educated about the benefits of winter tires to take on the predicted harsh winter. In an effort to do so, the Fountain Tire team is pleased to share key safety information and findings regarding the use of winter tires from the Thunder Bay Police, The Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals (CARSP) and The Canadian Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF). “We understand that it is easy to be confused about the differences between winter tires, allweather tires and all-season tires,” says Darcy Hunter, Fountain Tire. “The team at Fountain Tire believes in having the right tire for your location and terrain so that drivers can have peace of mind navigating through blizzards, black ice and whatever conditions stand between them and their destination this winter. With typical winter weather conditions bringing plenty of snow and ice to roads in and around Thunder Bay, winter tires are a must for personal safety.” According to a report by TIRF, newer generations of winter tires make use of a flexible rubber compound that is less prone to stiffen in cold temperatures and have treads designed to improve traction on any road surface, whether it be wet, slushy, snowy, icy or dry and cold. In fact, winter tires have better overall traction at -40 degrees Celsius than all-season tires do at +4 degrees Celsius – an important function for consumers to note when making decisions about how to equip their vehicles for winter driving. The same study found that alternating the use of winter and summer tires instead of using allseason tires year-round can offer long-term cost-saving benefits for drivers. Winter tires have been proven to both increase the likelihood of avoiding costly collisions and improve fuel economy, with

Canadians with the safest tires for winter driving. In an effort to encourage Canadians to learn about the benefits of winter tires and choose the safest option available, Fountain Tire is offering discounts on sets of four winter tires, through until December 10, 2016. -more-

Why is a snow tire better than a regular tread tire in winter? “The one thing you can count on with a snow tire is the rubber compound is designed to stay more supple in cold temperatures. Even if you can get a robust tread design in some regular truck tires, for instance, snow tires have a tread compound that is more suitable for cold conditions. It stays soft and pliable where the regular compound will become a little harder. The difference is between almost plastic and rubber on the road. The stopping distance is much better as well. You could get 40 feet better stopping minimum and in city driving 60 to 80 feet.”

Are people now using snow tires more often? “ We are finding over the last few years people are moving to snow and ice tires with less all season. Commonly we sell winter tire and rim packages. The new vehicles can have such large tires it can be expensive for that size of snow tire. You can downsize the winter tire rim package to make it more economical. The wheel and the rim may be a better price than just the snow tire alone in the larger size. The tire doesn’t make a difference on the operation of the vehicle. Also people may not want their main rims exposed to the sand and salt on the roads. We have stored over 400 sets of peoples winter tire packages.” Your operation has grown since your start here? “ We first came to Thunder Bay in 2000 and started on May Street, then bought the mechanical store on Memorial and had a retread plant on Gore Street. Today we are all in one location on Central Ave. We do everything from wheel chair tires to mining equipment. Also we have 8 mechanics both light and heavy duty including large truck repair. From the outside you don't realize how big it is with so many moving parts on a daily basis.” Fountain Tire Thunder Bay sell Goodyear, Dunlop, Kelly Springfield or whatever other tire is required for the vehicle. The Fountain Tire Thunder Bay has over 45 employees.

“Thunder Bay Police Service would like to remind motorists that winter is fast approaching and so are the adverse road conditions that are associated with it,” says Sgt. John Toneguzzi, Thunder Bay Police. “Please allow more time to get to your destination and keep in mind that you should be giving yourself enough stopping room between you and the vehicle in front of you. During inclement weather conditions you should reduce your speed accordingly and drive defensively.” “The Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals wants to remind Canadians that tires play a crucial role in the vehicle’s overall safety,” says Jennifer Kroeker-Hall, President of CARSP. “We strongly recommend the use of winter tires rather than all season tires, and that they be used on all four wheels, since all wheels interact with the ice and snow.” Fountain Tire recently gave consumers the chance to try the three different tire types and created a video of the experience to help educate Canadians. The video can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/8ve05N3P39c. For more information about Fountain Tire’s winter tire promotion, visit https://www.fountaintire.com/promotions/winter. Kyle Pallin Loves The Snocross Sport BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

Great Outdoors It is always fun to sit down in the Levi Lavallee race trailer at Duluth

and talk snocross. My conversation began with Pro Open rider Kyle Pallin, age 25.

How does the Duluth track look this year? “ The track was a little mushy but given what Mother Nature has given us I was shocked when we rolled up and saw the track. It felt so good to get out there and start the season to get those pre race jitter bugs out. You had a good season last year! “ Last season was a pretty good year for me. I was a actually hoping for a little bit better, just trying to get a little bit better each year and build. So this year I am looking to go out, do my best and give it everything I got. How was your off season? “ We work out pretty hard all summer and fall long. Levi is cracking the whip! I’m just kidding. This summer I

Next Issue Jan 15, 2017! Ad Copy Deadline January 13 807-623-2348 Page 8

spent more time in the Longville area and even had some more fun. You have to have fitness. You may get away with it on the shorter races but I’ll tell you what the finals they get so grueling and the track is pounded out. We had some seat time at Aurora

before coming here and got the bugs out. That was good.” How do you like the new Polaris race sled? “ The whole Polaris crew has worked really really hard to develop a bullet proof sled for us. The success shows at the races. I am honoured to be partnered with such a cool company. EFI may be coming in Arctic Cat race sleds and I think it could be part of the evolution’s of the sled.”

It must be fun to work with Levi as a coach? “ Not every has the luxury of working with someone like Levi to come back to and get some pointers on how to do better. It is a huge asset not everyone has, so I am very thankful to have him as a mentor and rider coach.

It has paid off for me in the last three years here. It is my full time career now and I know I can’t do it for ever but I can now so make the most of it.
