In Northumberland we are proud of our rich tradition of events and festivals. 2012 will be a golden year for the county when we will host the Olympic Torch Relay and celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Whether you are a tourist or resident I am sure you will find something of interest in this guide. The Olympic Flame is coming to Northumberland On the 14th, 15th and 16th June 2012 the Olympic Torch Relay will be in Northumberland on its journey from Greece towards the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Why not see the flame and combine your visit with taking in the breathtaking scenery and cultural delights which the County has to offer?

Northumberland Farmers’ Markets Visit one of the county's many vibrant and colourful monthly Farmers' Markets. Throughout the summer months there's at least one on somewhere in the county every weekend. Choose from quality, seasonal produce, speak to local producers and enjoy a day out in a picturesque market town. Hexham Racecourse The county’s only racecourse is often described as the most picturesque in the country. Perched on Yarridge Heights high above the historic market town, the racecourse has been the home of National Hunt racing in Northumberland for well over a century. The site takes full advantage of a natural amphitheatre of sloping grass below the stands to provide superb viewing of the racecourse as well as the magnificent surrounding countryside. The Queens Hall Arts Centre, Hexham The Queens Hall is a magnificent early Victorian building in the heart of Hexham. The Queens Hall has established itself as a strong base for a range of artistic activity, from the best of international touring to shows put on by local community groups. The Forum Cinema, Hexham The cinema, which dates back to 1937, shows the latest films and live satellite transmissions in authentic and comfortable surroundings. The Maltings Theatre and Cinema, Berwick-upon-Tweed The Maltings Theatre & Cinema is the premier venue for live performance and film in North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Located in the centre of the historic walled market town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, The Maltings offers a full programme of over 600 events each year - mixing worldclass professional performance and film with community centred activities, workshops and amateur events. The Phoenix Theatre, Blyth Northumberland's newest theatre, The Phoenix, was built with Lottery funding thanks to the dedication and goodwill of local people. The venue is extremely well appointed with a 300 seat auditorium presenting a year round programme of professional events ranging from drama to musicals. The Alnwick Playhouse, Alnwick Alnwick Playhouse is one of the leading small venues in the North of England. The vibrant arts centre is a highly valued part of the local community and provides a rich and balanced mix of professional touring drama, music, dance and film of the highest quality. The Playhouse has its very own Youth Theatre, Community Choir and Concert Band and also hosts the Bondgate Gallery which runs a continuous programme of art exhibitions throughout the year. Activity Drop-In Days at Calvert Trust Kielder Calvert Trust Kielder has over 25 years of experience providing holidays and adventurous activities to people with disabilities, their families and friends. Coastal Geology Walks 2012 Once again, the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in partnership with Northumbrian Earth are offering a series of guided walks to explore the fascinating geology of the Northumberland coast. These walks are free and there is no need to book, just turn up!

Fire and Ice - Travelling to the Edge of Things Sat May 12th Holy Island Meet at the entrance of Lindisfarne Castle at 2pm for a 2 hour walk of about 4 km. This walk explores how this landscape formed from the ancient rocks which create the grain of the landscape as well as looking at the elements which have sculpted the rocks to form the landscape we see today.

Back to the Sea Sat June 9th Beadnell Meet at the beach exit to the main car park in Beadnell at 2pm for a 2 hour walk of about 4 km. Beadnell is unique on the east coast in having a harbour that faces west! Come and find out the influence that the geology has had on this as well as the relationship between Beadnell's ancient history and it's human heritage.

Ripples, Soft Centres and Tea Tues July 10th Howick to Boulmer Meet at the small car park by Sea Houses Farm near Howick (GR NU 257174) at 2pm for a 2 hour walk of about 4 km. Come and find out what these patterns tell us about the ancient past of this area and how these beautiful sandy bays came into existence... and be reminded of the greatest invention known to civilised gentle-folk!

Giant Plants in a Steamy Bog

Sat Aug 11th South of Spittal Meet at the end of the promenade in Spittal at 2pm for a 2 hour walk of about 4 km. Back in the good old days Spittal was as hot and as balmy as a resort by the Indian Ocean with vast rivers and massive swamps filled with giant tree ferns as well as beautiful shallow clear blue tropical seas filled with corals as well as other interesting beasts.

Farenheit 2012 Sun Sept 9th Bamburgh Meet by the cricket pitch at 2pm for a 2 hour walk of about 4 km. This walk looks at the rocks which underlie the Castle at Bamburgh which form part of the Whin Sill. Explore the evidence which points to the molten origins of these rocks. When were these rocks formed and how hot were they when they arrived?


Druridge Bay Country Park On the coast just south of Amble, the park is home to a beautiful sandy beach and dunes plus a lake surrounded by woods and meadows. There are great opportunities for outdoor sports and a wide range of walks. Many paths around the lake are suitable for wheelchairs and there’s a play area and a café in the visitor centre. Bolam Lake Country Park Two miles north of Belsay, Bolam Lake is a jewel in the crown of Northumberland, with historic landscapes and dramatic views. Feed the swans and ducks from one of the jetties, have a picnic by the lake or walk through the peaceful mature woodlands. Many paths are accessible for wheelchairs, and fishing permits are available from the shop in Belsay. The visitor centre has a great café and shop. Open at weekends and school holidays.

Plessey Woods Country Park Plessey Woods is a great day out for all the family, with picturesque woodland, meadows and riverside. The riverside walk along the River Blyth offers the opportunity to spot the elusive otter, kingfisher and red squirrel and a good network of paths makes Plessey a popular place for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Blyth and Seaton Sluice Links and Foreshore Located between Blyth and Seaton Sluice, the 5km of bays, links and foreshore offer something for everyone who wants to visit the beautiful Northumberland coast. A bay of golden sand, dunes and rock pools, and the chance to spot some spectacular wildlife along the coastline. There’s a large play area, a café and the chance to explore the wartime structures at Blyth Links. Parking is available along the bay and paths are suitable for wheelchairs.

Visit Housesteads this year and meet Felix, a Roman character in the new museum at Housesteads Roman Fort. A new interactive and audiovisual exhibition explores life at the hilltop fortress and civilian settlement on the northerly edge of the Roman Empire. Discover how the Romans came to this location and built the iconic fort. Through a collection of Roman finds see what life was like at Housesteads and the legacy the Romans left behind. Outside in the fort a series of new site interpretation panels will help visitors understand the networks of buildings in the fort. Also at Housesteads: Explore the granaries, communal latrines (aka Roman toilets) and civilian settlement. May Riding the Bounds Tues 1st May Berwick-upon-Tweed 2012 sees the 403rd Riding of the Bounds. The oldest of the famous Borders Common Ridings. The Bounds starts the season with a breathtaking event celebrating Berwickupon-Tweed's unique history in a stunning display of pageantry and equestrianism. The Olympic Flame is coming to Northumberland Why not combine your visit with taking in the breathtaking scenery and cultural delights which the County has to offer? The Torch will enter the county from the north and make its way south towards Alnwick where it will stop overnight in the town. There will be a spectacular evening celebration event to mark the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at the Pastures, within the grounds of Alnwick Castle. The two hour event will be a celebration for the county. It will include Northumberland themed entertainment alongside spectacular touring shows supplied by the Torch Relay sponsors, Lloyds TSB, Samsung and Coca Cola. Throughout the county, communities are planning fairs, festivals and themed events to celebrate the passing of the flame through Northumberland.

Festival of Alnwick – in Celebration of London 2012 Saturday 9th June Friday June 15, Alnwick A week-long celebration to coincide with the visit of the Olympic Torch to Alnwick. As part of the Festival of Alnwick, the town is staging mini versions of all the festivals and events it hosts throughout the year, a showcase for all that is good and vibrant about the home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland.
