Commemorating
WWI
in Northumberland August 2014 will see the one hundredth anniversary of the start of WWI. Over the next four years, many community groups, individuals, museums and organisations are planning events to commemorate key dates from WWI. The Imperial War Museum is hosting a commemoration website which will include details of events throughout Northumberland and the North East. The International Dark Sky Association has recently designated a large area of the county as a Gold standard Dark Sky Park. Northumberland now has the largest protected dark sky zone in Europe. The Queen's Hall Arts Centre, Hexham The Queen's Hall is a magnificent early Victorian building which faces Hexham Abbey in the heart of Hexham. The Queen's Hall Arts Centre has established itself as a strong base for an extensive range of artistic activity, from the best of international and national touring to shows put on by local community groups. On an annual basis it hosts the Hexham Book Festival and the Hexham Gathering (folk music festival). The centre includes a 340 seat theatre, two galleries, library and cafĂŠ. The Phoenix Theatre, Blyth The Phoenix was built with Lottery funding thanks to the dedication and goodwill of local people. The venue has a 300 seat auditorium and a 60 seat studio presenting a year round programme of professional events ranging from drama to musicals. The Phoenix also has a strong youth theatre group and relies on its volunteers to run its programme. The Alnwick Playhouse, Alnwick Alnwick Playhouse is one of the leading small venues in the North of England. L.S Lowry is one of the UK's best loved artists, famous for his industrial scenes of the North of England. It is less well known that he had a great love for the North-East and was a regular visitor to Berwick from the 1930's onwards. 'L.S. Lowry in Berwick & Northumberland' presents a number of these originals to the town for the first time, alongside works that capture wider Northumberland and his fascination with the sea. Running from 21st June-21st Sept 2014 (Wed-Sun) in the Granary Gallery, Berwick-upon-Tweed, the exhibition includes loans from Sunderland Museum & Art Gallery, The Lowry Estate, and The Lowry (Salford), alongside works held in a number of private collections.

Bolam Lake Country Park Two miles north of Belsay, Bolam Lake is a jewel in the crown of Northumberland, with historic landscapes and dramatic views. Feed the swans and ducks from one of the jetties, have a picnic by the lake or walk through the peaceful mature woodlands. Many paths are accessible for wheelchairs, and fishing permits are available from the shop in Belsay. The visitor centre has a great cafĂŠ and shop that is open at weekends and school holidays. Druridge Bay Country Park On the coast just south of Amble, the park is home to a beautiful sandy beach and dunes plus a lake surrounded by woods and meadows. There are great opportunities for outdoor sports and a wide range of walks. Many paths around the lake are suitable for wheelchairs and there's a play area and a cafĂŠ in the visitor centre that is open at weekends and school holidays with events throughout the summer. Plessey Woods Country Park Plessey Woods is a great day out for all the family, with picturesque woodland, meadows and riverside. The riverside walk along the River Blyth offers the opportunity to spot the elusive otter, kingfisher and red squirrel and a good network of paths makes Plessey a popular place for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The play area, visitor centre and cafĂŠ (open at weekends and school holidays) are easily accessible for all ages and abilities. Blyth and Seaton Sluice Links and Foreshore Located between Blyth and Seaton Sluice, the 5km of bays, links and foreshore offer something for everyone who wants to visit the beautiful Northumberland coast. A bay of golden sand, dunes and rock pools, and the chance to spot some spectacular wildlife along the coastline. There's a large play area, a cafĂŠ, and the chance to explore the wartime structures at Blyth Links. Parking is available along the bay and some paths are suitable for wheelchairs. Hexham Racecourse The county's only racecourse is often described as the most picturesque in the country. Don't miss: Riding of the Bounds Thur 1st May, approximately 10.30am - 2.45pm Berwick upon Tweed The historic Riding of the Bounds ceremony takes place each year along the boundaries of Berwick upon Tweed. Traditionally, some 70 local residents riding on horseback scour the Berwick boundaries to ensure the Scottish have not encroached onto English soil. Prior Bookings - Riders must register to ride, this can be done on the day but is cheaper in advance. Free for spectators and no need to register.
