Northumberland a Premier Location for Your Dream Wedding The county of Northumberland contains breathtaking countryside, varied and striking coastline and a rich cultural heritage. Castles and stately homes are abundant in Northumberland. It is home to some great market towns where you will find interesting shops as well as restaurants and pubs serving delicious locally produced food. Along the coast you will find the Holy Island of Lindisfarne as well as teeming wildlife on the nearby Farne Islands. Alnwick offers both a castle and the fascinating Alnwick Garden. The castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England and home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. The Cheviot Hills is the perfect place for some excellent walking trails and picnic spots, and Kielder, with Europe’s largest man-made lake and England’s largest forest, is ideal for water sports, horse-riding and cycling. Northumberland is also home to the most popular segments of Hadrian’s Wall, including Vindolanda and Housesteads. For more information see page 70.

What is a

Civil Wedding? A civil wedding is a non-religious ceremony performed by a Senior Registrar. A civil wedding can take place in any register office or at any approved venue of your choice in England and Wales. Two registrars will attend your wedding, one to conduct the ceremony and the other to register the marriage. You will need to ask two people, friends or relatives, if they will witness your marriage. Your witnesses must be old enough to understand the ceremony and the role they will play. Gone are the days when a civil wedding meant a quick, impersonal ceremony performed in the Register Office in front of a desk. In Northumberland we have a dedicated Wedding Ceremonies Coordination Team, based in Alnwick, who offer a personal and relaxed atmosphere for your wedding arrangements whether you choose to marry at the Register Office or Approved Venue, where you and your guests will have a marvellous occasion to look back upon with many fond memories. They are

Getting

Married

in England and Wales Legal Preliminaries to Marriage If you are marrying in a Register Office, Approved Marriage Venue, Church or Chapel (except Church of England), you must give notice of your intention to marry to the Superintendent Registrar in the district in which you are resident. If you live in different districts you must each give a separate notice to the Superintendent Registrar of your own district. If you are marrying in the Church of England, you will normally have the Banns called and would arrange this with your Vicar. Giving notice means making a legal declaration that you are both free to marry each other and will require you to provide certain documents. You may do this up to one year before the date of your wedding and it must be done in person. A friend or relative cannot give notice on your behalf.

The notices of marriage will be displayed publicly in the Register Office for a period of 15 clear days before an Authority allowing your marriage to proceed may be issued. If either or both of you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland and wish to get married in England or Wales, the above rules do not apply. Please contact the Wedding Ceremonies Co-ordination Team for further information and advice. The law is different if one or both of you is not a British citizen or EEA national and subject to immigration control. See page 7 for further information. There is a statutory fee for giving notice of marriage (see page 8 for details).

Documents you need to provide When you give your notice, the Registrar will ask questions about you and your partner. They will ask you your full names, occupations, ages, addresses and nationality and whether you have been married before. There is a requirement for you and your partner to provide proof of identity, a current passport, if available, and a full birth certificate (this will contain parents’ details). If either of you has been married before, either in this country or abroad, you will need documents to show how your marriage ended. A decree absolute, stamped by the court, should be produced if either of you have been divorced in England or Wales. If the divorce took place in another country you should bring the original document announcing your divorce. If either of you is widowed, you will need to bring a copy of your late spouse’s death certificate. Any name change documents should also be produced. You will also be asked to provide proof of your address in the form of a bank statement or utility bill. If you are under eighteen, you will need to bring proof of your parents’ or guardians’ consent and they will need to fill out a form, which will be supplied by the Register Office. Foreign documents should be accompanied by an English translation. All these documents must be originals and not photocopies.

Immigration Rules If either or both of you are subject to immigration control, i.e. non-British or not a national from within the European Economic Area (EEA), you will need to follow special procedures. These rules apply even if you are a national of a country where there is normally no requirement for a visa to enter the UK. You will not be able to give your notice to marry without the correct fiancĂŠ(e) visa or relevant stamp in your passport, or a certificate of application from the Home Office. Further information can be obtained regarding immigration status from the Home Office website, www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk. Our Wedding Ceremonies Co-ordination Team will also be able to give advice.

Register

office weddings

There are four offices across the county, in Alnwick, Berwick, Hexham and Morpeth. They all vary in size, style and appearance. Further information is given on page 24.

Booking your Register Office wedding Once you have made your decision to marry at a Register Office, contact the Wedding Ceremonies Coordination Team at Alnwick (telephone number 01665 602870) who can take a provisional booking up to 12 months in advance of your proposed wedding date. A booking fee is payable at this time. Register Office weddings can take place Monday to Saturday (excluding Bank Holidays) at times to be arranged with the Wedding Ceremonies Co-ordination Team. You will then receive a letter detailing your provisional booking. This letter will also advise you both to make an appointment within 28 days, with the Superintendent Registrar in the area where you live, to give your notice of marriage and will explain the documents and fees required.

Also, if you decide to change the venue for your wedding after you have given notice, you will need to begin the process again and give fresh notices and fees for the new venue.

Please help us, and other couples being married on the same day, by arriving at the Register Office fifteen minutes before the ceremony time. The Marriage Ceremony This is your special day and there is no need to be worried or nervous. The marriage ceremony in a Register Office is quite brief, so please do not worry about learning lines as we will lead you through the ceremony in short, manageable phrases. The Registrar will record the marriage in the Register. You and your witnesses must then sign the Register. The bride will sign in the name by which she was known before the ceremony. The Registrars will then sign and, following this, you will be presented with your marriage certificate.

Photographs and Videos If you have someone video recording your ceremony or an official photographer we ask you to advise them to speak to the Registrar before the ceremony to agree an ideal place to stand.

Confetti Please remember that there may be other couples getting married on the same day as you, and therefore, in order to keep the room tidy, please ask your guests to wait until outside the building before showering you with confetti. Every office is different so, again, we ask you to confirm with the Registrar about the rules regarding confetti specific to that location.

Booking your venue wedding Whilst the majority of couples book the traditional Saturday wedding, many opt for a Sunday and Bank Holiday (excluding Christmas Day). However, weekday weddings are becoming more popular. The ceremony may commence any time after 8am and must be completed by 6pm. Once you have found the perfect place to hold your wedding ceremony, and made tentative arrangements with the venue, contact the Wedding Ceremonies Co-ordination Team at Alnwick, telephone number 01665 602870, to ensure registration staff are available on your preferred date and time. A provisional booking can be made as far in advance as you wish. A booking fee will be payable at this time. After you have made a provisional booking, details will be sent to you outlining the date, time and place of the proposed wedding. You will also be sent advice on the legal preliminaries to marriage, what documents you need to produce, the fees to be paid, and what you need to do to make it a confirmed booking.

Notice of Marriage Notices are only valid for one year. Although you may book your venue wedding more than a year ahead, you will find advice in your provisional booking form as to the earliest date you can attend to give notice of marriage. Please note: if you decide to change the venue for your wedding after you have given notice, you will need to begin the process again and give fresh notices and fees for the new venue. Please see Legal Preliminaries on Pages 6 and 7 which give fuller details and documents you need to provide.

After you have given notice of marriage Once we have confirmation that you have both given your notice of marriage, your booking is then confirmed and we will send you a Northumberland wedding ceremony pack along with a ceremony arrangement sheet. A Northumberland wedding, in an approved venue, enables you to choose your own ceremony. Your pack will contain a booklet giving examples of contemporary and traditional poetry and readings. It also gives suggestions on how to personalise your ceremony with optional vows and special words and music. Many couples choose live music, eg string quartets, harpists, soloists, pipers, pianists etc. Music can add a magical quality to the wedding ceremony. However, these are purely suggestions and the list is not exhaustive. The only stipulation is that there must be no religious content. The involvement of family and guests will give a personal touch and warmth to the ceremony.

Before the Ceremony If you or your guests are travelling, remember to make allowances for traffic delays, parking or prewedding photographs. Please understand that the Registrars will normally be attending other weddings on the day and if you are late, may not be able to proceed with your ceremony. The Registrars arrive at the venue about 30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. This allows the Registrars to see both the bride and groom privately, to check that the details to be entered into the marriage register are correct. Normally we see the groom in the marriage room 30 minutes before the wedding. If the bride is getting ready at the venue then the Registrars will visit her in her room. However, you can be seen together, whichever you prefer. At this time the Registrars will speak to all persons involved, the bride and groom, best man, bridal party, ushers, readers, musicians, and photographer/videographer. This is the ideal opportunity for you to ask any last minute questions.

The Ceremony You may be apprehensive or nervous about saying your vows in front of family and friends. However, the Registrars will be on hand every step of the way to guide you through all you need to do or say. The ceremony will begin with a warm welcome from the Registrar. You will be asked in turn to repeat your marriage vows and the ceremony will follow the format you have personally chosen. After the ceremony, the Registrar will record the marriage in the Register. You and your witnesses must then sign the Register. If an interpreter is present they will also be required to sign the register. You will then be presented with your marriage certificate.

Renewal of

Vows A renewal of vows is an opportunity for couples to renew their marriage or civil partnership vows in a unique and personal ceremony. Although many couples choose to renew their vows at milestone anniversaries, the ceremony is just as appropriate at any stage of a relationship. It is also ideal for couples who have married abroad and now wish to celebrate their wedding or civil partnership with family and friends who were unable to attend their original ceremony.

Commitment

Ceremony

There may be occasions when couples wish to show their commitment to each other but for various reasons are unable to go through a marriage or civil partnership ceremony. A commitment ceremony has no legal status but it gives couples the opportunity to make a public declaration of love and commitment to each other. Ceremonies can be tailored to include personal vows and readings with an exchange of rings if desired. This allows couples to make the occasion unique and meaningful to them. Each ceremony will reflect the feelings which couples have for each other and they may wish to include people who have a special place in their lives, such as children, friends or even a pet.

Naming

Ceremony

A naming ceremony is a special, non-religious way of celebrating a birth of a child or welcoming a child into a family. It is an opportunity for parents and supporting adults to declare, before family and friends, their commitment to the upbringing of the child. Naming ceremonies can be arranged for children of all ages and can also be used to celebrate adoptive and/or stepchildren into a family and to announce the new relationship. A Commemorative certificate of the ceremony will be signed and presented during the event. If you would like further information our Ceremony Coordination Team will be delighted to discuss this further with you. Contact them on 01665 602870 or email: alnwickreg@northumberland.gov.uk

Changes to Your

Passport There are so many things to organise when you are getting married that you may forget to notify the passport authorities if you are changing your name. Some countries might not accept a passport that has not been amended even if you are taking your marriage certificate with you. Check with your travel agent or the country’s consulate if you are in doubt. You can change your passport details at any time up to three months before the wedding, although you will not be able to use your passport until after you are married. To do this you will need to apply to the Passport Office for a new standard UK passport. Alternatively, the Passport office will amend your existing passport to show your future married name. Application forms are available at post offices and you will also need to complete a PD2 form, again available at post offices or online. Once you have given your notice of marriage, the PD2 form can be sent to the Register Office, 27 Fenkle Street, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 1HW, where it will be signed and returned to you. You should then send the signed PD2 form to the Passport Office, together with the application for the passport or amendment to your passport. If you are going abroad on your honeymoon, remember to book any travel tickets in the name you will have in your passport at the time of travelling. Wedding

tips

Wedding tips to help you organise your perfect wedding n

Make a list of what would make your ideal wedding, and then decide on your budget.

n

Book early, particularly your venue and try to be as flexible as possible with your dates as they get booked up well in advance.

n

Consider purchasing wedding insurance, things do and can go wrong!

n

Organise yourself. Start keeping a wedding folder so all your ideas and choices of various aspects to your wedding are kept in one place.

n

n

n

60

Personal recommendations are best when choosing reliable suppliers. If you do not know the supplier ask them for references from previous clients. Ask to see samples of their work. Our suppliers’ directory in the rear of this guide gives you a list of local suppliers at your fingertips. Once you have chosen your suppliers always confirm arrangements in writing. As you pay for things make sure you get a receipt and put your confirmation and receipts into your wedding folder. Make sure all your instructions to suppliers, guests and attendants, are as clear as possible to avoid confusion.

n

Post invites out at least six weeks before. If your guests are travelling consider enclosing maps and a list of accommodation. Do not forget to put an RSVP on the invite and enclose your gift list. When compiling your list choose gifts to suit a range of budgets.

n

Consult your bridesmaids over their dresses; try to choose flattering styles and colours to make them look their best.

n

Try to delegate some of the tasks as letting others get involved eases your workload and it can be much more fun doing things together.

n

Hold your hen and stag parties well in advance giving yourself plenty of time to recover!!

n

When you have your final dress fitting, take your shoes and accessories with you to make sure it all fits and looks good together.

n

Wedding arrangements can take over your life, so make time for each other.

n

Do not let minor hiccups ruin your day – just enjoy every minute of the day!

Bridal

Special

Feature

Beautiful Bride Your wedding day is possibly the biggest day of your life; you have the central role to play on the day. However, this is well deserved after months of hard work and taking responsibility for most of the wedding arrangements.

Spa Day

Hair & Make-Up

As a special treat to get away from the stresses of

brides want to look their best on their wedding day. Many hair salons offer wedding packages, which means your hairdresser will come out to your home or venue to do your hair. However, during the peak wedding season, hairdressers can be extremely busy, so book them early to ensure availability. This also allows plenty of time to try different styles to see what suits you and your wedding dress/outfit best. The day before your wedding is not the time to go for a radical new hairstyle!

Supporting Role A chief bridesmaid is there to support you through the months of planning and organising your wedding arrangements. A good bridesmaid is unflappable and able to calm and help the bride to enjoy her day. They can have a myriad of tasks, which may involve some of the following:

On the wedding day

Before the wedding n

Help the bride choose her wedding dress; also her choices for the other attendants.

n

Arrive at the bride’s home or the venue early and help with her dress.

n

Help organise the hen party.

n

n

Check that the bride is keeping an up to date record of the guests who have accepted or declined their wedding invitation.

Ensure any other bridesmaids or flower girls are ready and know what they are doing.

n

Arrange the bride’s dress, train and veil before she makes her entrance.

n

Take the bridal bouquet when the bride is standing next to the groom and, if required, lift her veil.

n

Check that last minute details (florist, photographer, transport etc) are sufficiently organised.

The last minute build up to the day can be when the bride is at her most stressed and when the bridesmaid is most needed.

Groom

Special

Feature

Groomed to Perfection Often wedding magazines and guides concentrate solely on the bride. Our aim is to also focus on the groom and other very important “roles” so you too feel involved. Together with your bride you have your Northumberland wedding guide to help plan your special day.

The Groom n

n

n

A tradition is for the groom to arrange the honeymoon, you may even wish to keep the destination secret, but make sure you know your bride’s favourite destinations! Organise and arrange fitting of clothes i.e. hire suits for yourself, best man, father of bride and ushers. Buy gifts for attendants.

n

Arrange transport to the wedding for yourself and other important guests.

n

If you have ushers, give them a seating plan for your families, close friends and guests involved in the ceremony, attendants, readers etc.

n

Try not to get stressed about your speech, speak from the heart, and make sure you say how beautiful your wife looks.

stag do.

n

Make sure the groom arrives to the ceremony on time, at least 30 minutes before the wedding.

n

Be responsible for the safe keeping of the wedding rings.

Father of the Bride

Ushers

n

Traditionally walks the bride down the aisle on his right arm.

n

Arrange buttonholes for important guests.

n

His speech is usually first before the groom. The Father of the Bride is usually expected to welcome the groom into the family, speak about the bride and propose a toast to the bride and groom.

n

Give out orders of ceremony.

n

Welcome the guests and guide them to their place ensuring family, close friends and readers are in the correct seat.

n

Escort Bride’s Mother to her seat.

n

Help the best man during the day, usher guests after the ceremony for photographs and to the reception.

Thank you so much for a wonderful wedding ceremony which was performed with such dignity, warmth and touches of humour. So many people commented how they had been moved by the “whole event”.

Brendan & Deborah

Thank you so much for a beautiful ceremony
