Here it is possible to enter the eastern flanker and really get a feel for how the walls were defended by short-range artillery.

The Masonic Hall Event Type: Property opening Church Street TD15 1ET Saturday 8th: 10am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J Berwick Freemasonry has enjoyed a presence in the town since 1773 and the present site was bought in June 1872 for £95. Memorabilia within the exquisite furnishings of the temple includes chairs, snuffboxes, banners and a gavel reputedly from the time of the Spanish Armada.
The Old Gaol Event Type: Property opening and tour Wallace Green TD15 1ED Saturday 8th: Tour every half hour from 10.30am – 1.30pm Suitable for children: Yes J Built by the Town Council, from the mid 1840s until 1878 this building operated as a gaol. From 1878 it was used as a court house/police station until c. 1890. Following alterations and the addition of a stable block, the building has held administrative offices for the council since 1892.

Bank Hill Icehouse Event Type: Property opening Bank Hill TD15 1AP Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th: 10am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J Icehouses were in use until the mid 1930s and were used to store ice cut from local ponds during winter months or, during mild winters, imported from Scandinavia. The export of salmon to London was a huge and profitable trade for Berwick. Built around 1786 – 1799, this icehouse was used as an air raid shelter in WWII. The brick walls at the rear of the chamber are a grim reminder of this period.
Berwick Watchtower Event Type: Property opening West End Tweedmouth TD15 2HE Sunday 9th: 11am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J Now a private house, this commanding building was built in 1848 as a Presbyterian Church. Over the years it has had various owners and occupants, including the Co-operative Society and at one point soldiers were billeted here. The present owner Kate Stephenson has reinstated the original large open space within the building and a major programme of art shows is planned for 2013. The official opening of The Watchtower is due to take place on 8th September.
The Gunpowder Magazine Event Type: Property opening Berwick Ramparts near Ravensdowne TD15 1HX Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th: 10am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J Built of local sandstone and surrounded by a high wall, this purpose-built ammunition store was constructed in 1749 to provide safe storage of explosives required by the military garrison at the Barracks, a few hundred yards away.

The visit will offer a chance to see this rarely opened room before it is due to be restored to its previous glory as part of the Hexham Abbey Project. Restoration work completed in 2004 converted the building to a community arts centre and coffee shop.
