About this guide This is your guide to Heritage Open Days 2014. The aim of Heritage Open Days is to give visitors and residents the opportunity to see buildings which are not normally open to the public. It is also a chance to visit for free buildings which would normally charge an admission fee. We've done our best to give you a flavour of the many events happening all over the county but the information listed may be subject to change and some events require pre-booking. Please double check the details before you travel.

Berwick-upon-Tweed Berwick Castle Tour Event Type: Tour Railway Street, TD15 1NF Saturday 13th Tours at 9.30am & 1.30pm Suitable for children from age 10. J Probably built by the Scottish King David about 1124, the castle held his royal mint. Discover a forgotten Jacobean palace and find out if the railway really demolished the castle. From Ditch to Bastion Event Type: Walk/Tour Berwick, TD15 1LY Saturday 13th 11.30am & 3.30pm Suitable for children from age 10 J Historian Jim Herbert takes you on a journey amongst the northern mediaeval defences of Berwick that actually saw some action in the Anglo-Scottish wars and bear witness to the changes in technology from the earliest ditch defence to the 16th century bastions. St Andrew's Church Event Type: Property opening Wallace Green, TD15 1EB Saturday 13th 10am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J The foundation stone for this building was laid in 1858 and the church opened in 1859. This eventually proved too small and in 1854 a new building, Wallace Green Church, was proposed. A second Church of Scotland came into being in 1879 with the amalgamation of the Low and High Meeting Houses. This became known as St Andrew's Church of Scotland which moved into a new building (now demolished) in Greenside Avenue in 1897. The Old Gaol Event Type: Property opening/Tour Wallace Green, TD15 1ED Saturday 13th Tours every half-hour from 10.30am – 1.30pm Suitable for children: Yes J The Town Council agreed in principle in 1836 to build a new gaol but plans were not approved until 1844. In 1878, the building ceased to operate as a gaol and was used as a Court House/Police Station until c.1890. Gunpowder Magazine Nr Lions House Allotments TD15 1JG Event Type: Property opening Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th 10am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J This purpose-built ammunition store was constructed in 1751 to provide safe storage of explosives required by the garrison at the nearby Barracks. Main Guard Event Type: Property opening/Exhibition Palace Street TD15 1HN Saturday 13th 10am – 4pm, Sunday 14th 11am – 5pm Suitable for children: Yes J The Main Guard was built in 1743, but demolished in 1815 and replaced by a new building in its present position near Palace Green. There are two main rooms in the building, one for the officer of the guard and the other for the soldiers, with a prison cell or 'black hole' where drunks and vagrants could be locked up in between. Holy Trinity Church Event Type: Property opening Wallace Green TD15 1ED Saturday 13th 10am – 4pm with tours on the hour 10am – 3pm Suitable for children: Yes J A very rare example of a church built during the Commonwealth period. Full of historical and architectural interest, it has no tower or steeple, reputedly at the express orders of Oliver Cromwell. Berwick Magistrates' Court Event Type: Property opening/Talk 40 Church Street TD15 1DX Friday 12th 10am – 1pm, 2pm – 3.45pm Suitable for children: Yes J Discover a place few would normally want to be in. The Magistrates' Court, finished in 1901, was the first public building by R. Burns Dick. There will be displays about crime in Berwick through the ages with re-enactments of crimes at 11am and 2.00pm. Linda Bankier from Berwick Record Office will give a talk at 3pm. Berwick Masonic Hall Event Type: Property opening/Tour Church Street TD15 1ET Saturday 13th 10am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J Built in 1872 by the town's St David's Masonic Lodge and still in their possession today, this is one of very few purpose built Masonic halls in the country and is an extremely rare example of Victorian Masonic architecture. Renowned for its beauty and one of the hidden treasures of Berwick, the Hall contains many fascinating examples of artefacts and documents concerning Freemasonry in the town which can be traced back to its origins in 1643. Spittal Fishing Shiel Event Type: Property opening Sandstell Road Spittal Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th 10am – 3pm Suitable for children: Yes J The word 'shiel' refers to the seasonal accommodation used by fishermen and can be found in place names such as Galashiels and North Shields. The shiels were equipped with bunks and fireplaces and were used as storage for fishing gear. Sandstell shiel is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1735 and is the only surviving un-modernised example on the Tweed. It contains an exhibition on the history of Tweed salmon fishing. Palace Green Pavilion Event Type: Property opening Palace Green Berwick Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th 10am - 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J This charming 19th century building was built as a subscription reading room. Later a billiard room was added. For the last 100 years it has been used by the local Scout Movement. Berwick Drill Hall Event Type: Property opening Ravensdowne TD15 1DQ Saturday 13th 10am – 3pm Suitable for children: Yes J The Artillery Drill Hall was built in 1891 by the Newcastle architect James W. Thompson for the 1st Berwick-upon-Tweed Voluntary Artillery. It has a two storey castellated tower rising from the centre of the building. Church of St. Bartholomew and St Boisil Event Type: Property opening Church Road TD15 2AJ Saturday 13th 10am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J Boisil was a mid 7th century Abbot near Melrose in the Scottish Borders, now called St Boswells, a corruption of his name. The church became known as St Bartholomew's after an early monastic leper hospital in Spittal. John Mackay Wilson who wrote the original the “Tales of the Borders” stories is buried here. Portraits of Northumberland Event Type: Activity Wallace Green Car Park TD15 1EE Friday 12th & Saturday 13th 10am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J Multi-award winning performance arts company November Club will bring its Portraits of Northumberland project to Berwick in a converted horse wagon. Internationally acclaimed artists Julia Barton and Carl von Weiler will work with local people to collect their stories and memories of streets, shops and houses in Berwick for a major production planned for the town in the future.
