About this guide This is your guide to Heritage Open Days 2013. The aim of Heritage Open Days is to give visitors and residents the opportunity to see buildings which are not normally open to the public. It is also a chance to visit for free buildings which would normally charge an admission fee. We've done our best to give you a flavour of the many events happening all over the county but the information listed may be subject to change and some events require pre-booking.

St Andrew's Church Event Type: Property opening Wallace Green TD15 1EB Saturday 14th: 10am – 2pm Suitable for children: Yes J The foundation stone for this building in Wallace Green was laid in 1858 and the church opened in 1859. It replaced an earlier church in Golden Square which had proved too small for the United Presbyterian congregation. A second Church of Scotland came into being in 1879 with the amalgamation of the Low and High Meeting Houses. This became known as St Andrew's Church of Scotland which moved into a new building (now demolished) in Greenside Avenue in 1897. In December 1972 this congregation merged with that at Wallace Green. The Old Gaol Event Type: Property opening/Tour Wallace Green TD15 1ED Saturday 14th: Tours every half-hour from 10.30am – 1.30pm Suitable for children: Yes J The Town Council agreed in principle in 1836 to build a new gaol but plans were not approved until 1844. In 1878, the building ceased to operate as a gaol and was used as a Court House/Police Station until c.1890. Following alterations to the inside and the addition of a stable block, the building has been administrative offices for the council since 1982. Gunpowder Magazine Event Type: Property opening TD15 1JG Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th: 10am – 4pm Suitable for children: Yes J This purpose-built ammunition store was constructed in 1749 to provide safe storage of explosives required by the military garrison at the Barracks, a few hundred yards away. Main Guard Event Type: Property opening/Exhibition Palace Street TD15 1HN Saturday 14th: 10am – 4pm, Sunday 15th: 11am – 5pm Suitable for children: Yes J The Main Guard was built in 1743, dismantled in 1815 and rebuilt in its present position near Palace Green. There are two main rooms in the building, one for the officer of the guard and the other for the soldiers, with a prison cell or 'black hole' where drunks and vagrants could be locked up in between.
