HR CPD Programme for School Leaders 2012-13 Our CPD programme aims to develop the knowledge and skills of all school leaders in managing people effectively. Building on the success of the 2011-12 programme, we continue to add new or updated events in response to feedback from headteachers, school business managers and governors. Reasons to get involved HR training tailored specifically for Northumberland schools and academies. Flexible programme based on development needs identified by heads and governors. Opportunity to network and share practice with other delegates. About the CPD programme All events delivered by Northumberland HR staff are FREE to schools that subscribe to the HR SLA for Maintained Schools or the HR Service Contract for Academies from September 2012. Some events are run in partnership with local HR and training providers to offer a wider range of expertise to school leaders. These are charged at affordable rates. A number of events are open to delegates from academies, free schools and other independent schools that do not subscribe to the HR Service Contract and are priced competitively.

Fundamentals of HR Whether you are a newly appointed or aspiring headteacher or business manager, or just want a refresher on the key aspects of managing people in a school context, this full-day course will give you a thorough overview of HR practices in Northumberland. Practical Employment Law for Managers Want to feel more confident about knowing whether you’re on the right side of the law when dealing with complex HR issues? Sometimes feel on the back foot when faced with an employee or trade union representative who knows more about employment law than you do? This half-day course will provide practical examples of how to put the law into practice when dealing with collective issues such as TUPE or individual issues such as changing contracts or terminating employment. A Northumberland headteacher will also give an insight into his experience of the Employment Tribunal system. What will I learn? Delegates will develop their knowledge of contract law including forming, changing and terminating contracts of employment, as well as have an overview of the practical effect of key laws such as TUPE. Safer Recruitment Full Course Every maintained school must ensure that at least one member of its appointment panel has completed Safer Recruitment training. This training is also highly recommended for other education settings including academies, free schools and independent schools. It is delivered by trainers accredited by the National College. The full course is for delegates that have not previously completed either the faceto-face or online safer recruitment training (or feel that they need a more comprehensive update than the Safer Recruitment Refresher Training on page 5). What will I learn? This one-day course looks at best practice that should be adopted when recruiting and selecting adults to work with children in schools. It sets out procedures and strategies to help those involved in the recruitment process to deter, identify and reject applicants who are unsuitable to work with children. It also seeks to strengthen safeguards for children in schools by helping to deter and prevent abuse, with the aim of creating an environment where concerns can be raised on poor or unsafe practice. Safer Recruitment Refresher Training This refresher training is for delegates that have previously completed either the face-to-face Safer Recruitment training (on page 4) or the online safer recruitment training provided by the National College/CWDC/DfE. It is delivered by trainers accredited by the National College. This course enables delegates to demonstrate that they have refreshed their safer recruitment training every five years in line with national guidance. What will I learn? This half-day course covers the principles of safer recruitment and practical dos and don’ts in light of the statutory guidance for schools. It will particularly focus on recent changes to agreed best practice and criminal records checks. How To Be An Effective Recruiter in partnership with Caroline Dixon from Designed for managers or governors new to recruiting and selecting staff, or for those who would appreciate updating their knowledge and skills, this practical course concentrates on preparing for and conducting interviews, and provides an overview of the crucial areas necessary for recruiting and selecting the right staff for your school. What will I learn? This course will guide you through preparing an accurate person specification, as well as how to design an effective selection process which will ensure the best person is recruited. Appraiser Training in partnership with Alan Johnston from
The effectiveness of the appraisal process depends upon the knowledge and skills of individual appraisers. This practical session sets out the key stages of the appraisal process and explores these in a school context from both a school improvement and HR perspective. What will I learn? By the end of the course each appraiser will understand the key principles of appraisal to achieve effective team performance, know how to use the teachers’ standards and be aware of the role of the appraiser in pay progression for teachers. Managing Sickness Absence and Disability Issues Managing sickness absence proactively can have a significant impact on the effectiveness and efficiency of your school. Our approach will enable headteachers and other managers to be fair and consistent in handling this challenging and sensitive area. Our training sets sickness issues within the context of Northumberland’s HR policies and procedures and established local practices. What will I learn? By the end of the course you will be able to identify and manage short-term and long-term absence cases by using appropriate tools and techniques and understand relevant law including reasonable adjustments for employees with a disability. Managing Disciplinary and Grievance Issues Handling disciplinary and grievance issues can be challenging even for experienced managers. This course provides an overview for headteachers, managers and governors in applying disciplinary and grievance procedures effectively in schools including specific contexts, such as child protection cases. Acas strongly recommends that any manager handling disciplinary or grievance issues should have received training. Our training sets these issues within the context of Northumberland’s HR policies and procedures and established local practices. What will I learn? You’ll gain an understanding of the principles of fair disciplinary and grievance procedures, the roles of the Nominated Officer and Investigatory Officer and how to conduct a disciplinary or grievance hearing. Managing Poor Performance and Capability Tackling issues of poor performance is one of the most difficult challenges for line managers in any organisation. This course focuses on the specific approach for headteachers and appraisers to challenge underperformance through the new appraisal and capability procedures introduced in 2012. This full-day course will give you tools and techniques to help you hold difficult conversations in challenging situations that can consume your time, energy and resources. Our trainers Ian Harbottle and Suzanne Hendey are HR Managers at Northumberland County Council and lead the HR service for schools and academies. With extensive experience across the breadth of education, they can draw upon over 20 years of specialist expertise in supporting schools as well as their professional qualifications in HR and employment law.
Our partners In order to add capacity to our service and widen the range of training we offer, we forge strategic partnerships with North East HR and training experts. Caroline Dixon from Holgate HR has over 20 years’ experience in training delivery, and has worked with a range of organisations across the public, private and not-for-profit sector. Caroline is a Graduate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and has extensive practical experience in a range of related areas, such as mediation and performance management. She is also an active and committed governor for a primary and secondary school in North Tyneside. This is her second year contributing to the HR CPD Programme for School Leaders. Andy Holgate from Holgate HR is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), as well as an experienced assessor for the profession. His wealth of experience at HR Director level, as well as many years of leading large teams, means that he brings practical experience of these challenges to the training he facilitates. Since establishing his own company in 2009 Andy has worked with a number of schools on individual projects. With a passion for helping individuals, teams and organisations harness stress and improve performance at all levels, David Algeo’s creative, engaging and experienced approach is proven. His stress programmes and workshops help organisations maximise staff potential and engagement, improve team performance, and raise staff motivation, wellbeing and achievement. His clients include Durham Police, University of Sunderland and the NHS.

Our prices and terms We are pleased to offer a wide variety of training FREE for schools that subscribe to Northumberland’s HR SLA for Maintained Schools or the HR Service Contract for Academies. We aim to keep prices competitive when we bring in external providers to work in partnership with us to deliver training. If we cancel – Minimum numbers are required for each event. You will be informed at least 2 weeks before an event is due to take place if it is not viable and wherever possible you will be offered at place on the same course at another location. If you cancel within 2 weeks of the event (within 4 weeks for Managing Difficult Conversations) – You will be charged the FULL delegate rate for courses with a delegate rate OR a cancellation fee of £35 (plus VAT for academies) for courses that are FREE, unless we find a substitute to take your place. In these circumstances we will send you the course materials to work through. How to book a place Places can be booked by emailing HR.training@northumberland.gov.uk no later than the booking deadline stated for each event in the programme (late bookings will be accepted where possible). We will ask you if you have any particular requirements, such as dietary or accessibility needs.
