ESSENTIALS We are a division of Northumberland County Council, with 2 professional teams offering Essential Support Services to educational establishments. Our Essential Services are:-
• Catering • Janitorial (Caretaking & Cleaning)
The Essentials team are now offering a range of supplementary support services to educational establishments who have in-house staff performing the above roles. Therefore, charges are based upon the assumption that staff are employed by your establishment. If you need the Essentials team to supply personnel, additional charges will apply.
We offer a ‘Pick & Mix’ approach to our services, so you can create a package to suit your individual needs.
There is no minimum take up required. Services can be bought ‘one-off’, on an ‘annual basis’ or as ‘a package’ for a discount. We can design bespoke packages for consortiums.
We have a small management and technical support team with local area managers with both private and public sector experience. Our local staff take great pride in their work and are proud to deliver essential services to their local community. If you have your own in-house Catering provision we can still provide valuable support.
Our Essential Fuel For Life School Meals Team works across the whole of Northumberland, serving High Schools with hundreds of meals each day, to small rural schools. We provide bespoke staffing arrangements to design, cook, serve and clear, home cooked, fresh nutritious food to children of all ages.
We operate an open book policy and are a non profit making team. We will not compromise quality for ‘profit’. Any profits made, are given to you .
We hold a Bronze Food for Life Award and have achieved ISO 9001 Quality, 14001 Environmental and OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety in all establishments. We will ensure your establishment achieves more than the minimum statutory and regulatory H&S standards. Our expert, in-house training and technical support team, ensure staff are appropriately trained, giving you peace of mind.
We have systems and initiatives to encourage meal uptake. We provide for corporate and special events, refreshments for meetings, support for theme days and curriculum activities.
Auditing of Management Systems
We have an extremely stringent auditing regime enabling us to support you and ensure your establishment complies with current H&S legislation. This peace of mind comes in the form of an bespoke Operations Manual and systems audit. If required, a detailed support package can also be provided.
Health & Safety Manual
Includes COSHH, HACCP and food hygiene standards information, reducing the potential risk of litigation or Health & Safety incidents.
Monitoring Check List File
We can supply a file with proformas for monitoring essential Health & Safety information on a daily basis. This will give you peace of mind and proof that you are maintaining adequate Health & Safety legal standards.
Menu Development Service
Using a cutting edge menu analysis system and years of hands on experience, our menus exceed National Nutritional Guidelines. We develop and cost up seasonal, cyclical menus, maintain compliance with legislative food standards and support you with special dietary requirements (at no extra cost).
Recruitment Support Services
Support with assessing staff requirements, advertising, testing and interviews. Costs are inclusive of all expenses and can be bought on an needs only basis.
Service Development
We have a programme of Service Development Initiatives to help increase your income and reduce expenditure. These include web based support systems, cashless purchasing systems, advice on new equipment, enhancing the dining experience, surveys, kitchen development, new menu ideas, queue reduction techniques and theme days.
Staff Training , Development & Recruitment Support Services
We have a dedicated Technical Support Team who have created a bespoke approach to training. Training covers the skills and knowledge required for a fit for purpose catering team, including customer care, Health & Safety, food hygiene, technical and competency-based training. Training is delivered in a variety of formats, to suit the needs of your staff. It can be bought on an ad-hoc basis or as an annual package. Training needs analysis and programmes can also be undertaken upon request.
Semi Managed Service
A single annual fee, includes all options as well as; development of core staffing model, support with staff performance, price and budget setting support, full procurement, including assessment of suppliers and food products, parents evenings, healthy eating initiatives, customer satisfaction questionnaires, classroom activities and much more.

Our Caretaking Services team provides key services to educational establishments and other County Council premises. A high quality, customer focussed service meeting all current legislation. We can help you to ensure your Caretaker manages your buildings and line manages your Cleaning personnel effectively and safely.
Our Cleaning Services Team will ensure that your establishment is kept spick and span. We can help to ensure your cleaning team provides you with effective cleaning services, tailored to the individual needs of your establishment and meets all current legislation.
We have an expert in-house janitorial training and technical support team, who ensures that all statutory Health & Safety regulations, training, policies and procedures are effectively managed. We have a long standing achievement of external
accreditation for ISO 9001 Quality, 14001 Environmental and OHSAS 18001 Health & Safety in all the premises we serve. Our local team of professionally trained and accredited staff are ready to meet the needs of your establishment.
Auditing of Management Systems
Following years of successful auditing, we can ensure your establishment complies with current Health & Safety legislation. We can provide a bespoke Cleaning and/or Caretaking Operations Manual. We will then undertake an annual audit of your services to ensure they are being complied with. If required, a detailed support package to help bring the service in line with standards, can also be provided for an extra charge.

This will meet quality Management 9001:2008, Environment ISO 14001:2004, Health & Safety BS OHSAS 18001:2007.
Staff Training & Development

Including chemical and manual handling, technical and competency based training. It can be delivered one to one, in groups, on line, practical and classroom based, to suit your needs. Where new or improved equipment is required, or where levels of cleaning and/or caretaking needs reviewing, we can undertake a service audit and manage any associated procurement and training on your behalf.
Recruitment Support Services
