C Boulmer Outreach Center Here is my finished proposal for the Boulmer Lifeboat station now converted to be an educational outreach Center. The building aims to have a versatile approach to meet a few target markets to really get the most out of the property in terms of use.
Large circular viewing window on second floor to be able to see the sea.
Steeper roof slope (51degree) to allow for more headroom on new floor.
Entrance located on opposite face to prevent wind gusting through the building.
Boat house doors replaced but kept in a similar style to link to the original site. Also allows large items easy access inside the building.
Curtain walling system to allow maximum light into the main educational area.
Bike rack and car parking to allow for multiple transport opportunities for users.

High South facing windows to light the corridor space, due to other buildings blocking light to windows lower down.
Detailed Design
High south facing windows to light main educational area, due to light being restricted from lack of Southern wall space.
High North Facing windows to provide some natural light to the upper level. As this will be a working area, I didn’t want direct sunlight that could cause glare.
3
C Traditional materials used on the front of the building which will largely be on show from the main road.
Modern timber rain screen used at the rear to provide a practical solution for weatherproofing the envelope.
Overhang on entrance roof, and wind protected space created by the entrance.
Smaller windows for privacy such as the WCs, for staff and users.

C Technical drawings Wall Junction
I have decided to keep the front of the building un-cladded so that the original stone work is on display. On the inside I have a gypsum wall board on battens. For the extension walls I have added a weather treated timber rain screen cladding over traditional concrete block work.

Window Section
Rain screen cladding. I was originally going to use a stone cladding. However, matching up with the original stonework would have been tricky and it would have looked noticeable in my opinion. Instead I decided to make the aesthetic entirely different and go with wood horizontal panels, which are cheaper. If a panel is damaged, it can be replaced in a modular manner. The timber will be treated, yet as it’s at the rear of the building, it won’t suffer as much of the harsh effects of the sea gusts.

C Roof Section
I have decided to use slate tiles on the roof. This is to keep the buildings aesthetic in keeping with the rest of the village. I had considered corrugated metal sheeting; however I felt it would make the building look dated quickly when it inevitably rusts.
