Innovation & new knowledge Consultancy Consultancy offers organisations access to expert advice, analysis and interpretation by academic staff in order to address specific questions or problems. We provide flexible solutions that meet your needs and your budget. With our diverse range of skills, our academics – available as individual subject specialists and multi-disciplinary teams - can cover everything from business strategy development to complex technical issues over the short-term and long-term.
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme helps businesses to innovate and grow. It does this by linking them with a university and a graduate to work on a specific project. Each KTP is a three-way partnership between a business, an academic institution (university) and a graduate. The university employs the recently qualified graduate who works at the company. The graduate, known as the ‘associate’, brings new skills and knowledge to the business.
A KTP can last between 12 and 36 months depending on the project and the needs of the business. It is part-funded by a grant; SMEs can receive 67% of project costs. Businesses achieve an average increase in annual profit of more than £1 million after taking part. They also create an average of two new jobs and the majority of associates are offered a permanent job in the company when the project ends. Northumbria has a strong track record of successful KTP collaborations and our associates have found that working on a KTP is a great way to develop a career in industry.
INNOVATE INNOVATE is Northumbria University’s off-campus Design-led Innovation Centre. “ There is a measurable gap between NBS and many of the other business schools I have worked with in the past. They take time to understand you and your project and are happy to challenge you and encourage your input. As an organisation we didn’t want to do what everyone else was doing and by working with Newcastle Business School we were able to ensure that this didn’t happen.” D eborah Lewin, Director of Communications, Sunderland City Council
CASE STUDY: Multichem
A Northumbria University KTP rated ‘outstanding’ by funder Innovate UK, led to Northumberlandbased Multichem Ltd creating a new type of permanent ink that complies with international environmental and child safety regulations. The PP200 ink secured the biggest single order in the company’s 43-year history, with monthly production at Multichem’s Hexham plant rising by 20% as new business came in from Latin America and Asia. The company sells to 30 countries and has been awarded a Queen’s Award for Enterprise. Professor Justin Perry of Northumbria’s Department of Applied Science worked with Chemistry researcher Dr Tom Winstanley, as the post-doctoral KTP associate, and the team at Multichem to improve knowledge of ink technology and lift product development capability within the firm. Dr Winstanley, who has since become product development manager at Multichem, said: “Working with Professor Perry and Northumbria’s Applied Sciences department allowed me to really advance my understanding of inks. Our predicted sales for 2017 are already exceeding our sales projections for five years’ time, which is an incredible achievement.” The KTP also yielded other products, including a bespoke ink additive, created using renewably sourced materials. Prospective customers in Latin America are already involved in production trials. Multichem’s managing director Michael Nelson, said the impact of the KTP had exceeded their expectations, adding: “The knowledge transfer from this KTP has enabled us to position Multichem as a leading supplier of sophisticated and environmentally-friendly ink products. We have significantly improved our in-house product development process which is now based on science-led, quantitative, robust, well-documented procedures.”
Collaborative Research Collaborative research and development sees businesses and our researchers working together on innovative projects in strategically important areas of science, engineering and technology. This leads to the development of successful new products, processes and services and contributes to business and economic growth. Collaborative research projects will normally be part-funded by some form of public sponsorship (e.g. grant aid from a government or public body).
CASE STUDY: Marlow Foods / Quorn Researchers at Northumbria University worked with Marlow Foods, manufacturers of Quorn™ on the project titled “Recovery of value added ingredients from the waste streams of large scale bioreactors” a one-year collaborative research project part funded by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK. The project funded by the Collaborative Research and Development (CR&D) Food Manufacturing Efficiency fund aimed to characterise the waste stream from large scale bioreactors and assess and implement suitable waste recovery and water recycling technologies, reducing overall water consumption while recovering added value, natural ingredients that could be marketed and supplied to the food ingredient and related sectors. Georgios Koutsidis, Principal Lecturer in Food Science (Enterprise & Innovation), led the project for Northumbria University working with Irene Peinado Pardo, Senior Research Assistant, along with other academics in the department of Applied Sciences to provide expertise in: • Characterisation and quantification of metabolites in waste streams utilising metabolomics approaches • Targeted analysis and characterisation of proteins, sugars, amino acids etc. • Separation technologies The benefits to Marlow foods are that it is now possible to monitor changes to the overall system whenever any modifications are made to the process. Advances made are being used to develop the nature and scope of next stage R&D including the possibility of re-starting the manufacture of Mycoscent. Tim Finnigan, Technical and Innovation Director at Marlow Foods commented: “The investigations have provided essential data that characterise the components in a substantial waste stream as well as early process definitions for extraction. It is anticipated that the project will lead to commercial impacts on the food, process engineering, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and also on organisations that could benefit from the applied expertise developed by the team at Northumbria University.”
Contract Research Businesses can also commission Northumbria’s researchers to work on a specific challenge. Many of the most exciting and innovative ideas are inspired, developed and tested in universities, so why not allow us to rise to your challenge and provide validated easy to understand results?
CASE STUDY: Northumbrian Water Embedding sustainability by exploring best practice Northumbria University and Northumbrian Water have been working in partnership to fund a three year sustainability research programme. The £60,000 programme has enabled a PhD student to carry out research on how organisations can work in partnership to leave a lasting positive impact on the community and environment. This three-year research programme, aims to understand how companies and organisations can take sustainability to the next level. This research will develop the practice of embedding sustainability further by exploring best practice and how it can be entrenched fully throughout an organisation’s structure. It will focus on leadership and management development through to the role of individuals and relationships with stakeholders. The collaboration with Northumbrian Water is being led by the University’s Newcastle Business School. Northumbrian Water is already at the cutting edge of sustainable water provision, and received a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its sustainable development. Louise Hunter, Director of Corporate Affairs from Northumbrian Water said: “We’re excited to be working alongside such an innovative university to offer one PhD student the opportunity to play an integral role in the future development of Northumbrian Water as we strive to enhance our reputation as the national leader in the provision of sustainable water and waste water services. “As part of the Embedding Sustainability within Organisations PhD research project, the student will be given unprecedented insight across the business to understand and enhance our successful social and environmental partnerships. Last year, we supported more than 680 organisations and gave more than 1% of annual pre-tax profits to projects which benefit the communities we serve. This project will give new insight into how we can further enhance this leading programme.”

Higher and Degree Apprenticeships Higher and Degree Apprenticeships combine university study and workplace learning to enable apprentices to gain a full bachelor’s or master’s degree. In partnership with Northumbria University, your organisation will support staff to achieve a degree qualification while working full time in your workplace. Learning fits around employees’ work commitments and involves flexible learning modes such as day or block release, distance or blended learning. An apprentice has full-time employment status and part-time student status and receives at least an apprentice minimum wage. Degree apprentices do not pay for training costs or tuition fees and are not eligible for student loans.
“ The Degree Apprenticeship scheme seems to be a win for all of the parties. Our Apprentices have increased their knowledge considerably whilst being at Northumbria, and I would have no hesitation in recommending the course.” John Wiseman Director, STCS
Government’s pledge to increase the number of apprenticeships starts to 3 million by 2020. Since April 2017, all employers with a payroll of over £3 million automatically pay an Apprenticeship Levy. The levy is set at a rate of 0.5% of the total pay bill minus a £15k allowance. The employer may use levy payments within a 24-month period to cover apprenticeship-training costs. Employers with a payroll bill under £3m (such as many SMEs) will not be subject to the levy and will be able to access funding to cover 90% (and in some cases 100%) of the costs of apprenticeship training. Your business benefits from: • Graduate-level expertise in your organisation and growing/creating your pool of highly skilled employees •A ttracting fresh talent to your business with an appealing offer of a job and salary from day one, no student tuition fees and a full degree qualification •A ccess to high quality programmes that are co-designed with employers •G overnment funding to provide new or current staff with a recognised and relevant academic qualification •A strong working relationship with Northumbria University and access to the many other ways we can help your business, including consultancy, research and development, and professional development for your staff.
