Welcome to BA (Hons) Film and Television Studies at Northumbria University

Your course • We aim to produce graduates who are independent thinkers and reflective, collaborative practitioners, who are well-prepared for the world of work and who will make significant contributions within their field. • The course is designed to achieve this by providing you with a knowledge of, and skills in the analysis of, cinema and television from a range of historical, international and cultural contexts.


The course‌ ‌provides you with practical skills in film and television production, IT, and information retrieval, and the ability to synthesise and evaluate a range of texts and sources, as well as communicate ideas and skills using a variety of formats and media.

Film and Television Studies at Northumbria •Research undertaken in the Department has been published internationally, and some of our recent projects include work on cult cinema, horror cinema, British costume drama television and women in the British television industry. •The course provides a range of career-focused skills and experiences from the outset. You will benefit from our links with external bodies, including the Tyneside Cinema. •Industry professionals from film festivals, moving-image education and film programming also visit the University to give presentations and guests lectures.


What do you study? The first year gives you a solid grounding in film history, analysis and critical studies, as well as an introduction to practical filmmaking skills.

If you are joining us in September 2020 • Your health and wellbeing are our priority – but so is your education, and we will work tirelessly to deliver our quality learning experience safely. • If you can travel safely to us, we will welcome you from 21st September 2020 for your induction programmes; teaching will start from 28th September. If you can’t travel to us safely, you will start online and join us when you can. • Learn on campus with fellow students, as appropriate, through small group teaching, with access to digital hubs, classrooms, laboratories, studios and clinics, and with full access to the University Library – one of the best academic libraries in the UK. • On-campus learning will be combined with flexible online study; with online lectures (both live and prerecorded), interactive activities, webcasts, seminars, workshops, discussion groups and more. You will experience a truly blended learning experience. • Online learning will be collaborative and engaging – designed for a virtual experience and tailored to you and your subject and delivered through our user friendly learning environment – Blackboard Ultra – providing access to virtual classrooms, laboratories, studios, clinics and our library online. • Taught, directed and independent learning activities will be clearly communicated week by week, developing your critical thinking and enabling you to challenge yourself and each other, and apply your learning.


Teaching and Assessment Assessment • Various forms: essays, exams, practical filmmaking projects and self-reflective portfolios, video essay, podcast, group and individual presentations. • You will be tested on subject or practical knowledge and understanding, as well as skills of critical reflection and communication. • A final choice between a dissertation or practicebased project.

Film and Media Foundation Year • Fully integrated four/five year route for our Film and Television Studies Programme that includes a preparatory Foundation Year alongside the standard programme and an optional placement/study abroad year. • Dual offer scheme – automatic offer change if grades are lower than predicted. • Opportunity to consolidate skills, develop subject knowledge, experience and skills to prepare you for progression to an honours degree. • Alternative route for candidates without the required entrance profile for an honours degree.


Entry Requirements • Level 4 (BA) entrance requirements are 120 UCAS tariff points, will also require GCSEs in Maths and English Language at grade 4 or C, or the equivalent. • Foundation Year entrance requirements are 80 UCAS tariff points, will also require GCSEs in Maths and English Language at grade 4 or C, or the equivalent. • Dual offer scheme – all candidates that are made a BA offer are automatically reserved a place on the four/five year route, which includes the Foundation Year, should you miss our entrance requirements. • We accept a combination of Level 3 qualifications, including A level, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Scottish and Irish Highers, Access to HE Diplomas or the International Baccalaureate. • Find out how many points your qualifications are worth using the UCAS Tariff calculator: www.ucas.com/ucas/tariff-calculator
