Creative and Cultural Industries Management at Northumbria The MA Creative and Cultural Industries Management course offers a practical and vocational approach to working within the rapidly developing creative economy. Enhanced programme flexibility enables you to select a culture sector specialism to suit your interests, which you will take alongside core cultural and creative industries management modules. Select your specialism choosing from; Music, Festivals & Events, Arts & Media, Cultural Heritage & Museums, Galleries & Visual Arts. Enhance your specialism and employability with an eight-week placement in a creative or heritage organisation of your choice and gain valuable experience of working in a cultural organisation. The course is embedded in a wide network of cultural practitioners and alumni and staff and students are involved in planning events like the ERiS project at Baltic 39 and many other activities.

Teaching and Assessment Teaching ▪ Courses are split into modules worth 30 or 60 credits. ▪ You study for 180 credits per year (full-time option). ▪ A combination of core and optional modules gives you the chance to develop your critical and analytical thinking. ▪ Lectures/seminars/workshops/group work and designing live projects.
Teaching and Assessment Assessment ▪ Written essays and reports in addition to presentations, ‘live briefs’ and project work. ▪ The final dissertation is a student led piece of work that provides you with the opportunity to establish yourself as an expert in your chosen specialism. ▪ You will participate in and observe management and systems within a cultural or creative working environment during your eight-week placement. ▪ There are no exams – the course has a mix of presentations, assignments and reports including the opportunity of a practice based or full dissertation.

Learn on campus with fellow students, as appropriate, through small group teaching, with access to digital hubs, classrooms, laboratories, studios and clinics, and with full access to the University Library – one of the best academic libraries in the UK.

On-campus learning will be combined with flexible online study; with online lectures (both live and prerecorded), interactive activities, webcasts, seminars, workshops, discussion groups and more. You will experience a truly blended learning experience.

Online learning will be collaborative and engaging – designed for a virtual experience and tailored to you and your subject and delivered through our user friendly learning environment – Blackboard Ultra – providing access to virtual classrooms, laboratories, studios, clinics and our library online.

Taught, directed and independent learning activities will be clearly communicated week by week, developing your critical thinking and enabling you to challenge yourself and each other, and apply your learning.

Visual and Material Culture Our research teams from a variety of disciplines come together to explore the historical and theoretical analysis of art, culture, design and architecture. Our Programme Lead has recently published his 7th book on culture and Visuality reflecting on many years of working with cultural organisations.
Entry Requirements ▪ Applicants should normally have a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in an arts-related subject. Creative and Cultural Industries Management Facilities ▪ Diverse facilities such as Gallery North @ University Gallery, dedicated performance studios and BALTIC 39 offer research and learning space to enable you to develop your creative skills. ▪ You will have access to our e-learning platform, Blackboard which offers access to collaboration tools and video/audio-enhanced features, electronic feedback, discussion boards, blogs and student websites. Classes use interactive online filming and materials. ▪ Classes are usually held in either the Lipman or Sandyford Building. ▪ We can also potentially offer artist studio space.
