Why Finance at Northumbria? If you’re interested in a career in finance then this course will equip you with the analytical and managerial skills to succeed within the sector. The programme has been developed in response to market demand for graduates with strong financial awareness and the essential skills to function as effective managers, both within the financial sector and across a range of multinational organisations. The course will enhance the relevant skills to allow you to succeed in these in-demand areas and is regularly refreshed to keep pace with advances in the financial sector, benchmarked against the syllabus of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute. Your employability will also be improved by undertaking a number of professional development modules and giving you a competitive advantage in the jobs market, in terms of self-development and leadership.
Finance MSc at Northumbria This flexible MSc takes an applied approach to learning. In addition to the six taught modules in investment, econometrics and finance, you will choose between a dissertation and a Masters’ Consultancy Project working on a business problem faced by a real organisation. You will learn in real-world facilities include a trading suite equipped with Bloomberg Terminals, which are used by financial traders and investment banks globally. You will gain experience using state-of-the-art technology and software including econometric packages such as ‘Eviews 10.0’ to estimate and interpret various econometric models for the purpose of designing trading strategies in industry. To complement the formal modules we focus on developing your key capability skills. This includes a residential weekend,* in the first semester, which is aimed at strengthening skills in self-reflection, independent learning and critical thinking. *Subject to availability and government guidance during Covid-19.

Advanced Practice Advanced Practice with investigative consultancy project routes are similar to many of our 1-Year MSc with consultancy project routes. The 2-year Advanced Practice route spends more dedicated time in the Business Clinic, reflected in the total assessment input for the two 60 credit modules. Ways to Study 1 Year Full Time Based at City Campus in Newcastle City Centre.

Teaching and Assessment Teaching Courses are split into modules worth 20 or 60 credits. You study for 180 credits per year. The course is delivered via lectures, seminars, workshops and oneto-one sessions. From the outset you will apply academic knowledge to real life business issues via tutorial-based activities, case discussion and group-work sessions. We also hold a number of guest lectures where you have the opportunity to engage with industry. Approximately 10-12 hours of teaching time per week. Self directed study time depends on module. A field trip to London Stock Exchange.
Teaching and Assessment Assessment You will be assessed through a combination of:

This will help you to become an independent, reflective and critical thinker who is culturally and ethically aware, with strong leadership and financial management capabilities. Usually 3 exams and 6 exams, subject to Covid-19.

If you can travel safely to us, we will welcome you from 21st September 2020 for your induction programmes; teaching will start from 28th September. If you can’t travel to us safely, you will start online and join us when you can. Learn on campus with fellow students, as appropriate, through small group teaching, with access to digital hubs, classrooms, laboratories, studios and clinics, and with full access to the University Library – one of the best academic libraries in the UK. On-campus learning will be combined with flexible online study; with online lectures (both live and prerecorded), interactive activities, webcasts, seminars, workshops, discussion groups and more. You will experience a truly blended learning experience. Online learning will be collaborative and engaging – designed for a virtual experience and tailored to you and your subject and delivered through our user friendly learning environment – Blackboard Ultra – providing access to virtual classrooms, laboratories, studios, clinics and our library online. Taught, directed and independent learning activities will be clearly communicated week by week, developing your critical thinking and enabling you to challenge yourself and each other, and apply your learning.

With experience in research and industry developing specialisms including investment, financial risk, professional banking, and consortium finance, staff incorporate professional experience and ongoing research into the syllabus. This ensures you are up-to-date with current developments in a fast changing subject field.
Collaborative, Relevant Research  Research is headed by a team of leading international professors, academic staff and doctoral research students. This allows for the development of multidisciplinary working across Newcastle Business School as well as capitalising upon our national and international university, industry and public sector collaborations.

Entry Requirements for 2020 Applicants should normally have a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in any subject or substantial experience of working in a business organisation. It is recommended that your previous studies include quantitative elements. English language requirements - International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent*).

Finance Facilities Newcastle Business School provides teaching in a world-class environment.
