Forensic Accounting at Northumbria  This course looks at financial crime and considers the nature, regulation and policing of financial crimes in the UK.  In particular, it focuses on the prevention and detection of fraud in organisations and examines corporate governance, internal controls and forensic accounting techniques.  The literature-based masters involves both qualitative and quantitative study, and will introduce you to the skills needed in the role of forensic accounting, including key areas such as people skills and emotional intelligence.


Forensic Accounting at Northumbria  You will study the law, regulation and policing of financial crimes, such as money laundering, bribery & corruption, market manipulation, tax evasion and terrorist finance.  You will examine occupational fraud, financial statement fraud and methods of prevention, detection and investigation.  You will be taught by specialists who have published in of financial crime such as fraud, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist finance.  As part of the course you will undertake a module on Leadership and Management Development alongside other postgraduate students at Newcastle Business School, to help you stand out on the international jobs market.

Teaching  Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, workshops, case discussions and practical exercises.  As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated enquiry and reflection.  Extensive feedback, from both tutors and peers, is built into the course.  Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system that helps ensure a successful learning journey.


Assessment  Assessment methods can include:  Visual / verbal presentations  Assignments  Exams  Your master’s dissertation will form a major part of the assessment and there may be the opportunity to conduct quantitative research as part of your dissertation.


If you are joining us in September 2020  Your health and wellbeing are our priority – but so is your education, and we will work tirelessly to deliver our quality learning experience safely.  If you can travel safely to us, we will welcome you from 21st September 2020 for your induction programmes; teaching will start from 28th September. If you can’t travel to us safely, you will start online and join us when you can.  Learn on campus with fellow students, as appropriate, through small group teaching, with access to digital hubs, classrooms, laboratories, studios and clinics, and with full access to the University Library – one of the best academic libraries in the UK.  On-campus learning will be combined with flexible online study; with online lectures (both live and prerecorded), interactive activities, webcasts, seminars, workshops, discussion groups and more. You will experience a truly blended learning experience.  Online learning will be collaborative and engaging – designed for a virtual experience and tailored to you and your subject and delivered through our user friendly learning environment – Blackboard Ultra – providing access to virtual classrooms, laboratories, studios, clinics and our library online.  Taught, directed and independent learning activities will be clearly communicated week by week, developing your critical thinking and enabling you to challenge yourself and each other, and apply your learning.


Our Staff  You will be taught by specialists who have published in of financial crime such as fraud, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist finance.  Professor Jackie Harvey has published extensively on corruption and anti-money laundering  Dr Peter Sproat has published articles on anti-money laundering, asset recovery, fraud counter-terrorist finance.


Long-standing Commitment to Responsible Business Research  Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to be an active participant in the on-going research agenda that’s at the heart of Newcastle Business School.  The Financial Crime research cluster brings together scholars from both Business and Law.


Entry Requirements  Applicants should normally have a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in business, or a discipline with a quantitative element.  International qualifications - if you have studied a non-UK qualification, you can see how your qualifications compare to the standard entry criteria, by selecting the country that you received the qualification in from our country pages at www.northumbria.ac.uk/yourcountry.  English language requirements - International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent*). * The university accepts many UK and International Qualifications in place of IELTS.
